We have studied a sample of Galactic classical Cepheids with their distance estimates taken from Skowron et al. (2019), where they were determined based on the period-luminosity relation. In this paper the Skowron et al. (2019) distances were increased by 10\%, according to the results of our kinematic analysis of these Cepheids obtained by us previously. We have refined the geometric characteristics of two spiral arms: the Carina-Sagittarius and Outer ones. The Galactocentric distance of the Sun was assumed to be $8.1\pm0.1$~kpc. Based on 257 Cepheids belonging to a Carina-Sagittarius arm segment with ages in the range 80--120 Myr, we have found the pitch angle of the spiral pattern $i=-12.7\pm0.4^\circ$ and the position of this arm $a_0=7.28\pm0.05$~kpc. Based on 352 Cepheids from the Outer arm with ages in the range 120--300 Myr, we have found $i=-12.0\pm0.5^\circ$ and $a_0=13.03\pm0.06$~kpc. Based on a sample of 1618 Cepheids with ages in the range 80--300 Myr, we have constructed a wavelet map in the ``position angle--logarithm of distance'' plane. The following estimates have been obtained from our analysis of this map: $i=-12.9\pm0.4^\circ$ and $a_0=7.43\pm0.05$~kpc for the Carina-Sagittarius arm and $i=-12.5\pm0 .5^\circ$ and $a_0=13.33\pm0.06$~kpc for the Outer arm. We have found that the Sun is very close to the corotation radius that is located between the Sun and the Perseus arm and estimates the angular rotation speed of the spiral pattern $Ω_p = 27\pm1$ km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$.
To redetermine the Galactic spiral density wave parameters, we have performed a spectral (Fourier) analysis of the radial velocities for 44 masers with known trigonometric parallaxes, proper motions, and line-of-sight velocities. The masers are distributed in a wide range of Galactocentric distances $(3.5<R<13.2$ kpc) and are characterized by a wide scatter of position angles $θ$ in the Galactic XY plane. This has required an accurate allowance for the dependence of the perturbation phase both on the logarithm of the Galactocentric distances and on the position angles of the objects. To increa…
A campaign is described, open to participation by interested AAVSO members, of follow-up observations for newly-discovered Cepheid variables in undersampled and obscured regions of the Galaxy. A primary objective being to use these supergiants to clarify the Galaxy's spiral nature. Preliminary multiband photometric observations are presented for three Cepheids discovered beyond the obscuring dust between the Cygnus & Aquila Rifts (40 \le l \le 50 degrees), a region reputedly tied to a segment of the Sagittarius-Carina arm which appears to cease unexpectedly. The data confirm the existence of e…
We consider a sample of Galactic classical Cepheids with highly accurate estimates of their distances taken from Skowron et al., where they were determined based on the period-luminosity relation. We have refined the geometric characteristics of two spiral arm segments-the Carina-Sagittarius and Outer ones. For this purpose, we have selected 269 Cepheids belonging to the Carina-Sagittarius arm with ages in the range 80-120 Myr. From them we have estimated the pitch angle of the spiral pattern $i=-11.9\pm0.2^\circ$ and the position of this arm $a_0=7.32\pm0.05$ kpc for the adopted $R_0=8.1\pm0.…
Mapping the Galactic spiral structure is a difficult task since the Sun is located in the Galactic plane and because of dust extinction. For these reasons, molecular masers in radio wavelengths have been used with great success to trace the Milky Way spiral arms. Recently, Gaia parallaxes have helped in investigating the spiral structure in the Solar extended neighborhood. In this paper, we propose to determine the location of the spiral arms using Cepheids since they are bright, young supergiants with accurate distances (they are the first ladder of the extragalactic distance scale). They can…
The angular-momentum distribution of classical Cepheids in the outer Milky Way disc is bi-modal with a gap at $L_\mathrm{gap}=2950\,\mathrm{km}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}\,\mathrm{kpc}$, corresponding to $R=13\,\mathrm{kpc}$, while no similar feature has been found in the general population of disc stars. We show that star formation in multiple spiral arm segments at the same azimuth leads to such multi-modality which quickly dissolves and only shows in young stars. Unlike other explanations, such as a 1:1 orbital resonance with the Galactic bar, this also accounts for the observed steepening of the ste…
To study the peculiarities of the Galactic spiral density wave, we have analyzed the space velocities of Galactic Cepheids with proper motions from the Hipparcos catalog and line-of-sight velocities from various sources. First, based on the entire sample of 185 stars and taking $R_0 = 8$ kpc, we have found the components of the peculiar solar velocity $(u_\odot,v_\odot,w_\odot)=(7.6,11.6,6.1)\pm(0.8,1.1,0.6)$ km s$^{-1}$, the angular velocity of Galactic rotation $Ω_0 = -27.4\pm0.6$ km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$ and its derivatives $Ω^{'}_0 = +4.07\pm0.21,$ km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-2}$ and $Ω^{"}_0 = -0.83…

We investigated the dependence of the parameters of the segments of spiral arms of the Galaxy on the age of classical Cepheids. The catalog of Cepheids (Mel'nik et al. 2015) was divided into two samples$-$relatively young ($P>9^\text{d}$) and relatively old ($P<9^\text{d}$) objects. The parameters of the spiral structure were determined both for two samples separately and jointly for the combination of two systems of segments traced by young and old objects. For most of the segments, their parameters for young and old objects differ significantly. Taking into account the difference between the…
We use the currently most complete collection of reliable Cepheid positions (565 stars) out to ~5 kpc based mostly on our photometric data to outline the spiral pattern of our Galaxy. We find the pitch-angle to be equal to 9--10 degrees with the most accurate estimate (i=9.5 +/-0.1 degrees) obtained assuming that the spiral pattern has a four-armed structure, and the solar phase angle in the spiral pattern to be chi_0 = 121+/-3 degrees. The pattern speed is found to be Omega_P=25.2+/-0.5km/s/kpc based on a comparison of the positions of the spiral arms delineated by Cepheids and maser sources …
Classical and Type II Cepheids are used to reinvestigate specific properties of the Galaxy. A new Type II reddening-free Cepheid distance parameterization is formulated from LMC Cepheids (OGLE), with uncertainties typically no larger than 5-15%. A distance to the Galactic centre of R0=7.8+-0.6 kpc is derived from the median distance to Type II Cepheids in the bulge (OGLE), R0=7.7+-0.7 kpc from a distance to the near side of the bulge combined with an estimated bulge radius of 1.3+-0.3 kpc derived from planetary nebulae. The distance of the Sun from the Galactic plane inferred from classical Ce…
We have detected, for the first time, Cepheid variables in the Sculptor Group spiral galaxy NGC 7793. From wide-field images obtained in the optical V and I bands on 56 nights in 2003-2005, we have discovered 17 long-period (24-62 days) Cepheids whose periods and mean magnitudes define tight period-luminosity relations. We use the (V-I) Wesenheit index to determine a reddening-free true distance modulus to NGC 7793 of 27.68 +- 0.05 mag (internal error) +- 0.08 mag (systematic error). The comparison of the reddened distance moduli in V and I with the one derived from the Wesenheit magnitude ind…
In an effort to improve our understanding of the spiral arm structure of the Milky Way, we use Classical Cepheids (CCs) to increase the number of young tracers on the far side of the Galactic disk with accurately determined distances. We use a sample of 30 CCs, discovered using near-infrared photometry from the VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea survey (VVV) and classified based on their radial velocities and metallicities. We combine them with another 20 CCs from the literature for which VVV photometry is available. The compiled sample of CCs with homogeneously computed distances based on VVV …
We have discovered a clear sign of the disruption phase of the Perseus arm in the Milky Way using Cepheid variables, taking advantage of the accurately measured distances of Cepheids and the proper motions from Gaia Data Release 1. Both the Galactocentric radial and rotation velocities of 77 Cepheids within 1.5 kpc of the Perseus arm are correlated with their distances from the locus of the Perseus arm, as the trailing side is rotating faster and moving inward compared to the leading side. We also found a negative vertex deviation for the Cepheids on the trailing side, $-27.6\pm2.4$ deg, in co…
Motivated by an amazing range of reported distances to the nearby Local Group spiral galaxy M33, we have obtained deep near-infrared photometry for 26 long-period Cepheids in this galaxy with the ESO VLT. From the data we constructed period-luminosity relations in the J and K bands which together with previous optical VI photometry for the Cepheids by Macri et al. were used to determine the true distance modulus of M33, and the mean reddening affecting the Cepheid sample with the multiwavelength fit method developed in the Araucaria Project. We find a true distance modulus of 24.62 for M33, wi…
To construct the rotation curve of the Galaxy, classical Cepheids with proper motions, parallaxes and line-of-sight velocities from the Gaia DR2 Catalog are used in large part. The working sample formed from literature data contains about 800 Cepheids with estimates of their age. We determined that the linear rotation velocity of the Galaxy at a solar distance is $V_0=240\pm3$~km s$^{-1}$. In this case, the distance from the Sun to the axis of rotation of the Galaxy is found to be $R_0=8.27\pm0.10$~kpc. A spectral analysis of radial and residual tangential velocities of Cepheids younger than 1…
The Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy, with physical properties inferred from various tracers informed by the extrapolation of structures seen in other galaxies. However, the distances of these tracers are measured indirectly and are model-dependent. We constructed a map of the Milky Way in three-dimensions based on the positions and distances of thousands of classical Cepheid variable stars. This map shows the structure of our Galaxy's young stellar population, and allows us to constrain the warped shape of the Milky Way's disk. A simple model of star formation in the spiral arms reproduces…
We study the kinematics of a sample of classical Cepheids younger than 120 Myr. For these stars, the estimates of distances taken from Skowron et al., which are based on the period-luminosity relation, and the line-of-sight velocities and the proper motions from the Gaia catalog are available. There are also distance estimates derived from the trigonometric parallaxes contained in the Gaia ERD3 catalog. A method, which relies on comparison of the first-order derivative of the Galactic rotation angular velocity, showed the need to lengthen the distance scales determined by Skowron et al. by abo…
The putative association between the 10.8 d classical Cepheid TW Nor and the open cluster Lynga 6 has generated considerable debate in the literature. New JHKs photometry in tandem with existing radial velocities for Lynga 6 stars imply cluster membership for TW Nor, and establish the variable as a high-weight calibrator for classical Cepheid relations. Fundamental mean parameters determined for Lynga 6 are: d=1.91+-0.10 kpc, E(J-H)=0.38+-0.02, and log(t)=7.9+-0.1. The Benedict et al.(2007)/Turner (2010) Galactic VIc Wesenheit function was revised using TW Nor's new parameters: W_VI,0=(-3.37+-…
We report the discovery from our IRSF/SIRIUS Near-Infrared (NIR) variability survey of five new classical Cepheids located in the inner Galactic Disk, at longitude $l\simeq -40^{\circ}$. The new Cepheids are unique in probing the kinematics and metallicity of young stars at the transition between the inner Disk and the minor axis of the central Bar, where they are expected to be less affected by its dynamical influence. This is also the first time that metallicity of Cepheids is estimated on the basis of medium-resolution ($R\sim3,000$) NIR spectra, and we validated our results with data in the…
Radial abundance gradients provide sound constraints for chemo-dynamical models of galaxies. Azimuthal variations of abundance ratios are solid diagnostics to understand their chemical enrichment. In this paper we investigate azimuthal variations of abundances in the Milky Way using Cepheids. We provide the detailed chemical composition (25 elements) of 105 Classical Cepheids from high-resolution SALT spectra observed by the MAGIC project. Negative abundance gradients, with abundances decreasing from the inner to the outer disc, have been reported both in the Milky Way and in external galaxies…
We apply a simple axisymmetric disc model to 218 Galactic Cepheids whose accurate measurements of the distance and velocities are obtained by cross-matching an existing Cepheids catalogue with the Gaia DR2 data. Our model fit determines the "local centrifugal speed", $V_\mathrm{c}$ $-$ defined as the rotation speed required to balance the local radial gravitational force $-$ at the Sun's location to be $V_{c}(R_0)=236\pm 3$ km s$^{-1}$ and the Sun's azimuthal and radial peculiar motions to be $V_{\odot}=12.4\pm0.7$ km s$^{-1}$ and $U_{\odot}=7.7\pm0.9$ km s$^{-1}$, respectively. These results …
The Milky Way's neutral hydrogen (HI) disk is warped and flared. However, a dearth of accurate HI-based distances has thus far prevented the development of an accurate Galactic disk model. Moreover, the extent to which our Galaxy's stellar and gas disk morphologies are mutually consistent is also unclear. Classical Cepheids, primary distance indicators with distance accuracies of 3-5%, offer a unique opportunity to develop an intuitive and accurate three-dimensional picture. Here, we establish a robust Galactic disk model based on 1339 classical Cepheids. We provide strong evidence that the wa…
Using the astrometry and integrated photometry from the Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3), we map the density variations in the distribution of young Upper Main Sequence (UMS) stars, open clusters and classical Cepheids in the Galactic disk within several kiloparsecs of the Sun. Maps of relative over/under-dense regions for UMS stars in the Galactic disk are derived, using both bivariate kernel density estimators and wavelet transformations. The resulting overdensity maps exhibit large-scale arches, that extend in a clumpy but coherent way over the entire sampled volume, indicating the location…
Flat rotation curves of spiral galaxies are considered as an evidence for dark matter, but the rotation curve of the Milky Way is difficult to measure. Various objects were used to track the rotation curve in the outer parts of the Galaxy, but most studies rely on incomplete kinematical information and inaccurate distances. Here, we use a sample of 773 Classical Cepheids with precise distances based on mid-infrared period-luminosity relations coupled with proper motions and radial velocities from Gaia to construct the accurate rotation curve of the Milky Way up to the distance of ~20 kpc from …
The connection between some features of the metallicity gradient in the Galactic disk, best revealed by Open Clusters and Cepheids, and the spiral structure, is explored. The step-like abrupt decrease in metallicity at 8.5 kpc (with R_0= 7.5 kpc, or at 9.5 kpc if R_0 = 8.5 kpc is adopted) is well explained by the corotation ring-shaped gap in the density of gas, which isolates the internal and external regions of the disk one from the other. This solves a long standing problem of understanding the different chemical characteristics of the inner and outer parts of the disk. The time required to…
We present the detection of Cepheids in the barred spiral galaxy NGC 1313, using the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 on the Hubble Space Telescpoe. Twenty B (F450W) and V (F555W) epochs of observations spanning over three weeks were obtained, on which the profile-fitting photometry of all stars in the monitored field was performed using the package HSTphot. A sample of 26 variable stars have been identified to be Cepheids, with periods between 3 and 14 days. Based on the derived period-luminosity relations in B and V bands, we obtain an extinction-corrected distance modulus of mu = 28.32 +- …
In order to understand the Barium abundance distribution in the Galactic disk based on Cepheids, one must first be aware of important effects of the corotation resonance, situated a little beyond the solar orbit. The thin disk of the Galaxy is divided in two regions that are separated by a barrier situated at that radius. Since the gas cannot get across that barrier, the chemical evolution is independent on the two sides of it. The barrier is caused by the opposite directions of flows of gas, on the two sides, in addition to a Cassini-like ring void of HI (caused itself by the flows). A step i…
Using high-quality observed period-luminosity relations in both Magellanic Clouds in VIJHKs bands and optical and near-infrared Wesenheit indices we determine the effect of metallicity on Cepheid P-L relations by comparing the relative distance between LMC and SMC as determined from the Cepheids to the distance difference between the Clouds which has been derived with very high accuracy from late-type eclipsing binary systems. Within an uncertainty of 3% which is dominated by the uncertainty on the mean metallicity difference between the Cepheid populations in LMC and SMC we find metallicity e…
Following the earlier discovery of classical Cepheid variables in the Sculptor Group spiral galaxy NGC 7793 from an optical wide-field imaging survey, we have performed deep near-infrared $J$- and $K$-band follow-up photometry of a subsample of these Cepheids to derive the distance to this galaxy with a higher accuracy than what was possible from optical photometry alone, by minimizing the effects of reddening and metallicity on the distance result. Combining our new near-infrared period-luminosity relations with the previous optical photometry we obtain a true distance modulus to NGC 7793 of …
To estimate the peculiar velocity of the Sun with respect to the Local Standard of Rest (LSR), we used young objects in the Solar neighborhood with distance measurement errors within 10%-15%. These objects were the nearest Hipparcos stars of spectral classes O-B2.5, masers with trigonometric parallaxes measured by means of VLBI, and two samples of the youngest and middle-aged Cepheids. The most significant component of motion of all these stars is induced by the spiral density wave. As a result of using all these samples and taking into account the differential Galactic rotation, as well as th…
We have tested the method of determining the solar Galactocentric distance R_0 and Galactic rotation velocity $V_0$ modified by Sofue et al. using near-solar-circle objects. The motion of objects relative to the local standard of rest has been properly taken into account. We show that when such young objects as star-forming regions or Cepheids are analyzed, allowance for the perturbations produced by the Galactic spiral density wave improves the statistical significance of the estimates. The estimate of R_0=7.25\pm0.32 kpc has been obtained from 19 star-forming regions. The following estimates…
Low-resolution LAMOST and Keck spectra of blue supergiant stars distributed over the disks of the Local Group spiral galaxies M 31 and M 33 are analyzed to determine stellar effective temperatures, gravities, metallicities, and reddening. Logarithmic metallicities at the center of the galaxies (in solar units) of $0.30\pm0.09$ and $0.11\pm0.04$ and metallicity gradients of $-0.37\pm0.13$ dex/$R_{25}$ and $-0.36\pm0.16$ dex/$R_{25}$ are measured for M 31 and M 33, respectively. For M 33 the 2-dimensional distribution of metallicity indicates a deviation from azimutal symmetry with an off-centre…
We present a collection of 250 anomalous Cepheids (ACs) discovered in the OGLE-IV fields toward the Large (LMC) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The LMC sample is an extension of the OGLE-III Catalog of ACs published in 2008, while the SMC sample contains the first known bona fide ACs in this galaxy. The total sample is composed of 141 ACs in the LMC and 109 ACs in the SMC. All these stars pulsate in single modes: fundamental (174 objects) or first overtone (76 objects). Additionally, we report the discovery of four ACs located in the foreground of the Magellanic Clouds. These are the first f…
I revisit the Cepheid-distance determination to the nearby spiral galaxy M101 (Pinwheel Galaxy) of Shappee & Stanek (2011), in light of several recent investigations questioning the shape of the interstellar extinction curve at $λ\approx 8,000$ Å(i.e. I-band). I find that the relatively steep extinction ratio $A_{I}/E(V-I)=1.1450$ (Fitzpatrick & Massa 2007) is slightly favoured relative to $A_{I}/E(V-I)=1.2899$ (Fitzpatrick 1999) and significantly favoured relative the historically canonical value of $A_{I}/E(V-I)=1.4695$ (Cardelli et al. 1989). The steeper extinction curves, with lower values…
The J-region asymptotic giant branch (JAGB) method is a new standard candle that is based on the stable intrinsic J-band magnitude of color-selected carbon stars, and has a precision comparable to other primary distance indicators such as Cepheids and the TRGB. We further test the accuracy of the JAGB method in the Local Group Galaxy M33. M33's moderate inclination, low metallicity, and nearby proximity make it an ideal laboratory for tests of systematics in local distance indicators. Using high-precision optical BVI and near-infrared JHK photometry, we explore the application of three indepen…

Classical Cepheids (DCEPs) represent a fundamental tool to calibrate the extragalactic distance scale. However, they are also powerful stellar population tracers in the context of Galactic studies. The forthcoming Data Release 3 (DR3) of the Gaia mission will allow us to study, with unprecedented detail, the structure, the dynamics, and the chemical properties of the Galactic disc, and in particular of the spiral arms, where most Galactic DCEPs reside. In this paper, we aim to quantify the metallicity dependence of the Galactic DCEPs' period-Wesenheit ($PWZ$) relation in the Gaia bands. We ado…
We propose a new method for determination of the rotation velocity of the galactic spiral density waves, correspondingly, the corotation radius, $r_C$, in our Galaxy by means of statistical analysis of radial oxygen distribution in the galactic disc derived over Cepheids. The corotation resonance happens to be located at $r_C \sim 7.0 - 7.6 $ kpc, depending on the rate of gas infall on to the galactic disc, the statistical error being $\sim 0.3 - 0.4$ kpc. Simultaneously, the constant for the rate of oxygen synthesis in the galactic disc was determined. We also argue in favour of a very short …
We employed the {\it VISTA near-infrared $YJK_\mathrm{s}$ survey of the Magellanic System} (VMC), to analyse the $Y,\,J,\,K_\mathrm{s}$ light curves of $δ$ Cepheid stars (DCEPs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Our sample consists of 4408 objects accounting for 97 per cent of the combined list of OGLE\,IV and {\it Gaia}\,DR2 DCEPs. We determined a variety of period-luminosity ($PL$) and period-Wesenheit $PW$ relationships for Fundamental (F) and First Overtone (1O) pulsators. We discovered for the first time a break in these relationships for 1O DCEPs at $P$=0.58 d. We derived relative ind…
Low resolution ESO VLT/FORS spectra of blue supergiant stars are analyzed to determine stellar metallicities (based on elements such as Fe, Ti, Mg) in the extended disk of the spiral galaxy NGC3621. Mildly subsolar metallicity (-0.30 dex) is found for the outer objects beyond 7 kpc independent of galactocentric radius and compatible with the absence of a metallicity gradient confirming the results of a recent investigation of interstellar medium HII region gas oxygen abundances. The stellar metallicities are slightly higher than those from the HII regions when based on measurements of the weak…
Fundamental astrophysical parameters have been derived for Be 55 open cluster based on UBVI CCD photometric data, observed with the AZT-22 1.5m telescope at Maidanak Astronomical Observatory in Uzbekistan. The mean reddening is obtained as E(B-V)=1.77+-0.10 mag from early type members. The zero age main sequence fitting in the Q(VA)- Q0 diagrams indicates the distance modulus, (V0 - MV)=12.4+-0.20 mag (d=3.02+-0.28 kpc). This photometric distance is consistent with the distances of Gaia EDR3 (d=3.09+-0.16 kpc) and period-luminosity relation (d=2.78+-0.32 kpc) of its Cepheid S5 within the uncer…
We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of SN 2013aa and SN 2017cbv, two nearly identical type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) in the host galaxy NGC 5643. The optical photometry has been obtained using the same telescope and instruments used by the Carnegie Supernova Project. This eliminates most instrumental systematics and provides light curves in a stable and well-understood photometric system. Having the same host galaxy also eliminates systematics due to distance and peculiar velocity, providing an opportunity to directly test the relative precision of SNe Ia as standard candles. Th…
The Carnegie-Chicago Hubble Program seeks to anchor the distance scale of Type Ia supernovae via the Tip of the Red Giant Branch (TRGB). Based on deep $Hubble$ $Space$ $Telescope$ ACS/WFC imaging, we present an analysis of the TRGB for the metal-poor halo of NGC 1365, a giant spiral galaxy in the Fornax Cluster that is host to the supernova SN2012fr. We have measured its extinction-corrected TRGB magnitude to be F814W $= 27.34 \pm 0.03_{stat} \pm0.01_{sys}$ mag. In advance of future direct calibration by $Gaia$, we set a provisional TRGB luminosity via the Large Magellanic Cloud and find a tru…
