In non-interacting isolated quantum systems out of equilibrium, local subsystems typically relax to non-thermal stationary states. In the standard framework, information on the rest of the system is discarded, and such states are described by a Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE), maximizing the entropy while respecting the constraints imposed by the local conservation laws. Here we show that the latter also completely characterize a recently introduced projected ensemble (PE), constructed by performing projective measurements on the rest of the system and recording the outcomes. By focusing on the time evolution of fermionic Gaussian states in a tight-binding chain, we put forward a random ensemble constructed out of the local conservation laws, which we call deep GGE (dGGE). For infinite-temperature initial states, we show that the dGGE coincides with a universal Haar random ensemble on the manifold of Gaussian states. For both infinite and finite temperatures, we use a Monte Carlo approach to test numerically the predictions of the dGGE against the PE. We study in particular the $k$-moments of the state covariance matrix and the entanglement entropy, finding excellent agreement. Our work provides a first step towards a systematic characterization of projected ensembles beyond the case of chaotic systems and infinite temperatures.
The recent discovery of quantum many-body scar states has revealed the possibility of having states with low entanglement that violate the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis in nonintegrable systems. Such states with low entanglement entropy are rare but naturally exist in the integrable system of free fermions. Here, we demonstrate analytically that these atypical states would be always eliminated when an arbitrary weak interaction is introduced between the fermions. In particular, we show that the probability of having a many-body scar state with entanglement entropy satisfying a sub-volum…
Generalized thermalization is a process that occurs in integrable systems in which unitary dynamics, e.g., following a quantum quench, results in states in which observables after equilibration are described by generalized Gibbs ensembles (GGEs). Here we discuss an emergent eigenstate construction that allows one to built emergent local Hamiltonians of which one eigenstate captures the entire generalized thermalization process following a global quantum quench. Specifically, we study the emergent eigenstate that describes the quantum dynamics of hard-core bosons in one dimension (1D) for which…
We investigate eigenstate thermalization from the point of view of vanishing particle and heat currents between a few-body fermionic Hamiltonian prepared in one of its eigenstates and an external, weakly coupled Fermi-Dirac gas. The latter acts as a thermometric probe, with its temperature and chemical potential set so that there is neither particle nor heat current between the two subsystems. We argue that the probe temperature can be attributed to the few-fermion eigenstate in the sense that (i) it varies smoothly with energy from eigenstate to eigenstate, (ii) it is equal to the temperature…
Integrable systems do not obey the strong eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH), which has been proposed as a mechanism of thermalization in isolated quantum systems. It has been suggested that an integrable system reaches a steady state described by a generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE) instead of thermal equilibrium. We prove that a generalized version of the strong ETH holds for noninteracting integrable systems with translation invariance. Our generalized ETH states that any pair of energy eigenstates with similar values of local conserved quantities looks similar with respect to local o…
We study the real time dynamics of $N_F$ flavors of fermions coupled to a $U(1)$ gauge field in $2+1$ dimensions to leading order in a $1/N_F$ expansion. For large enough $N_{F}$, this is an interacting conformal field theory and describes the low energy properties of the Dirac spin liquid. We focus on thermalization and the onset of many-body quantum chaos which can be diagnosed from the growth of initally anti-commuting fermion field operators. We compute such anti-commutators in this gauge theory to leading order in $1/N_F$. We find that the anti-commutator grows exponentially in time and c…

Understanding how isolated quantum systems thermalize has recently gathered renewed interest almost 100 years after the first work by von Neumann, thanks to the experimental realizations of such systems. Experimental and numerical pieces of evidence imply that nonintegrability of the system plays an important role in thermalization. Nonintegrable systems that conserve energy alone are expected to be effectively described by the (micro)canonical ensemble due to the so-called eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) in the thermodynamic limit. In contrast, it is expected that stationary states…
We numerically study two non-interacting fermion models, a quantum wire model and a Chern insulator model, governed by open system Lindblad dynamics. The physical setup consists of a unitarily evolving "bulk" coupled via its boundaries to two dissipative "leads". The open system dynamics is chosen to drive the leads to thermal equilibrium, and by choosing different temperatures and chemical potentials for the two leads we may drive the bulk into a non-equilibrium current carrying steady state. We report two main results in this context. First, we show that for an appropriate choice of dynamics…
Free or integrable theories are usually considered to be too constrained to thermalize. For example, the retarded two-point function of a free field, even in a thermal state, does not decay to zero at long times. On the other hand, the magnetic susceptibility of the critical transverse field Ising is known to thermalize, even though that theory can be mapped by a Jordan-Wigner transformation to that of free fermions. We reconcile these two statements by clarifying under which conditions conserved charges can prevent relaxation at the level of linear response and how such obstruction can be ove…
The Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH) implies a form for the matrix elements of local operators between eigenstates of the Hamiltonian, expected to be valid for chaotic systems. Another signal of chaos is a positive Lyapunov exponent, defined on the basis of Loschmidt echo or out-of-time-order correlators. For this exponent to be positive, correlations between matrix elements unrelated by symmetry, usually neglected, have to exist. The same is true for the peak of the dynamic heterogeneity length, relevant for systems with slow dynamics. These correlations, as well as those between el…
The generalized amplitude damping (GAD) quantum channel implements the interaction between a qubit and an environment with arbitrary temperature and arbitrary interaction time. Here, we implement a photonic version of the GAD for the case of infinite interaction time (full thermalization). We also show that this quantum channel works as a thermal bath with controlled temperature.
Matrix elements of observables in eigenstates of generic Hamiltonians are described by the Srednicki ansatz within the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH). We study a quantum chaotic spin-fermion model in a one-dimensional lattice, which consists of a spin-1/2 XX chain coupled to a single itinerant fermion. In our study, we focus on translationally invariant observables including the charge and energy current, thereby also connecting the ETH with transport properties. Considering observables with a Hilbert-Schmidt norm of one, we first perform a comprehensive analysis of ETH in the mode…

We study the dynamics of a quantum system in thermal equilibrium that is suddenly coupled to a bath at a different temperature, a situation inspired by a particular black hole evaporation protocol. We prove a universal positivity bound on the integrated rate of change of the system energy which holds perturbatively in the system-bath coupling. Applied to holographic systems, this bound implies a particular instance of the averaged null energy condition. We also study in detail the particular case of two coupled SYK models in the limit of many fermions using the Schwinger-Keldysh non-equilibriu…
We study the quantum dynamics of a simple translation invariant, center-of-mass (CoM) preserving model of interacting fermions in one dimension (1D), which arises in multiple experimentally realizable contexts. We show that this model naturally displays the phenomenology associated with fractonic systems, wherein single charges can only move by emitting dipoles. This allows us to demonstrate the rich Krylov fractured structure of this model, whose Hilbert space shatters into exponentially many dynamically disconnected subspaces. Focusing on exponentially large Krylov subspaces, we show that th…
We provide further analytical insights into the newly established noninteracting (free-fermion) Page curve, focusing on both the kinematic and dynamical aspects. First, we unveil the underlying canonical typicality and atypicality for random free-fermion states. The former appears for a small subsystem and is exponentially weaker than the well-known result in the interacting case. The latter explains why the free-fermion Page curve differs remarkably from the interacting one when the subsystem is macroscopically large, i.e., comparable with the entire system. Second, we find that the free-ferm…
We investigate the non-equilibrium dynamics of complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models in the $q\rightarrow\infty$ limit, where $q/2$ denotes the order of the random Dirac fermion interaction. We extend previous results by Eberlein et al. [Phys. Rev. B 96, 205123 (2017)] to show that a single SYK $q\rightarrow\infty$ Hamiltonian for $t\geq 0$ is a perfect thermalizer in the sense that the local Green's function is instantaneously thermal. The only memories of the quantum state for $t<0$ are its charge density and its energy density at $t=0$. Our result is valid for all quantum states amenable t…
