Speckle filtering is generally a prerequisite to the analysis of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. Tremendous progress has been achieved in the domain of single-image despeckling. Latest techniques rely on deep neural networks to restore the various structures and textures peculiar to SAR images. The availability of time series of SAR images offers the possibility of improving speckle filtering by combining different speckle realizations over the same area. The supervised training of deep neural networks requires ground-truth speckle-free images. Such images can only be obtained indirectly through some form of averaging, by spatial or temporal integration, and are imperfect. Given the potential of very high quality restoration reachable by multi-temporal speckle filtering, the limitations of ground-truth images need to be circumvented. We extend a recent self-supervised training strategy for single-look complex SAR images, called MERLIN, to the case of multi-temporal filtering. This requires modeling the sources of statistical dependencies in the spatial and temporal dimensions as well as between the real and imaginary components of the complex amplitudes. Quantitative analysis on datasets with simulated speckle indicates a clear improvement of speckle reduction when additional SAR images are included. Our method is then applied to stacks of TerraSAR-X images and shown to outperform competing multi-temporal speckle filtering approaches. The code of the trained models is made freely available on the Gitlab of the IMAGES team of the LTCI Lab, Télécom Paris Institut Polytechnique de Paris (https://gitlab.telecom-paris.fr/ring/multi-temporal-merlin/).

Deep learning approaches show unprecedented results for speckle reduction in SAR amplitude images. The wide availability of multi-temporal stacks of SAR images can improve even further the quality of denoising. In this paper, we propose a flexible yet efficient way to integrate temporal information into a deep neural network for speckle suppression. Archives provide access to long time-series of SAR images, from which multi-temporal averages can be computed with virtually no remaining speckle fluctuations. The proposed method combines this multi-temporal average and the image at a given date i…
Information extraction from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is heavily impaired by speckle noise, hence despeckling is a crucial preliminary step in scene analysis algorithms. The recent success of deep learning envisions a new generation of despeckling techniques that could outperform classical model-based methods. However, current deep learning approaches to despeckling require supervision for training, whereas clean SAR images are impossible to obtain. In the literature, this issue is tackled by resorting to either synthetically speckled optical images, which exhibit different propert…

Reducing speckle and limiting the variations of the physical parameters in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images is often a key-step to fully exploit the potential of such data. Nowadays, deep learning approaches produce state of the art results in single-image SAR restoration. Nevertheless, huge multi-temporal stacks are now often available and could be efficiently exploited to further improve image quality. This paper explores two fast strategies employing a single-image despeckling algorithm, namely SAR2SAR, in a multi-temporal framework. The first one is based on Quegan filter and replaces…

Speckle fluctuations seriously limit the interpretability of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. Speckle reduction has thus been the subject of numerous works spanning at least four decades. Techniques based on deep neural networks have recently achieved a new level of performance in terms of SAR image restoration quality. Beyond the design of suitable network architectures or the selection of adequate loss functions, the construction of training sets is of uttermost importance. So far, most approaches have considered a supervised training strategy: the networks are trained to produce outpu…

This paper investigates the effectiveness of an expert system based on K-nearest neighbors algorithm for laser speckle image sampling applied to the early detection of diabetes. With the latest developments in artificial intelligent guided laser speckle imaging technologies, it may be possible to optimise laser parameters, such as wavelength, energy level and image texture measures in association with a suitable AI technique to interact effectively with the subcellular properties of a skin tissue to detect early signs of diabetes. The new approach is potentially more effective than the classic…

Speckle reduction is a key step in many remote sensing applications. By strongly affecting synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, it makes them difficult to analyse. Due to the difficulty to model the spatial correlation of speckle, a deep learning algorithm with self-supervision is proposed in this paper: SAR2SAR. Multi-temporal time series are leveraged and the neural network learns to restore SAR images by only looking at noisy acquisitions. To this purpose, the recently proposed noise2noise framework has been employed. The strategy to adapt it to SAR despeckling is presented, based on a co…

In ultrasound imaging the appearance of homogeneous regions of tissue is subject to speckle, which for certain applications can make the detection of tissue irregularities difficult. To cope with this, it is common practice to apply speckle reduction filters to the images. Most conventional filtering techniques are fairly hand-crafted and often need to be finely tuned to the present hardware, imaging scheme and application. Learning based techniques on the other hand suffer from the need for a target image for training (in case of fully supervised techniques) or require narrow, complex physics…

Change detection is one of the fundamental applications of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. However, speckle noise presented in SAR images has a much negative effect on change detection. In this research, a novel two-phase object-based deep learning approach is proposed for multi-temporal SAR image change detection. Compared with traditional methods, the proposed approach brings two main innovations. One is to classify all pixels into three categories rather than two categories: unchanged pixels, changed pixels caused by strong speckle (false changes), and changed pixels formed by real t…
Despeckling is a key and indispensable step in SAR image preprocessing, existing deep learning-based methods achieve SAR despeckling by learning some mappings between speckled (different looks) and clean images. However, there exist no clean SAR image in the real world. To this end, in this paper, we propose a self-supervised dense dilated convolutional neural network (BDSS) for blind SAR image despeckling. Proposed BDSS can still learn to suppress speckle noise without clean ground truth by optimized for L2 loss. Besides, three enhanced dense blocks with dilated convolution are employed to im…
Imaging through scattering media is a useful and yet demanding task since it involves solving for an inverse mapping from speckle images to object images. It becomes even more challenging when the scattering medium undergoes dynamic changes. Various approaches have been proposed in recent years. However, to date, none is able to preserve high image quality without either assuming a finite number of sources for dynamic changes, assuming a thin scattering medium, or requiring the access to both ends of the medium. In this paper, we propose an adaptive inverse mapping (AIP) method which is flexib…
Due to its noninvasive character, optical coherence tomography (OCT) has become a popular diagnostic method in clinical settings. However, the low-coherence interferometric imaging procedure is inevitably contaminated by heavy speckle noise, which impairs both visual quality and diagnosis of various ocular diseases. Although deep learning has been applied for image denoising and achieved promising results, the lack of well-registered clean and noisy image pairs makes it impractical for supervised learning-based approaches to achieve satisfactory OCT image denoising results. In this paper, we p…
Extending super-resolution imaging techniques to objects hidden in strongly scattering media potentially revolutionize the technical analysis for much broader categories of samples, such as biological tissues. The main challenge is the media's inhomogeneous structures which scramble the light path and create noise-like speckle patterns, hindering the object's visualization even at a low-resolution level. Here, we propose a computational method relying on the object's spatial and temporal fluctuation to visualize nanoscale objects through scattering media non-invasively. The fluctuating object …

Ultrasound (US) imaging is a fast and non-invasive imaging modality which is widely used for real-time clinical imaging applications without concerning about radiation hazard. Unfortunately, it often suffers from poor visual quality from various origins, such as speckle noises, blurring, multi-line acquisition (MLA), limited RF channels, small number of view angles for the case of plane wave imaging, etc. Classical methods to deal with these problems include image-domain signal processing approaches using various adaptive filtering and model-based approaches. Recently, deep learning approaches…
SAR despeckling is a problem of paramount importance in remote sensing, since it represents the first step of many scene analysis algorithms. Recently, deep learning techniques have outperformed classical model-based despeckling algorithms. However, such methods require clean ground truth images for training, thus resorting to synthetically speckled optical images since clean SAR images cannot be acquired. In this paper, inspired by recent works on blind-spot denoising networks, we propose a self-supervised Bayesian despeckling method. The proposed method is trained employing only noisy images…

Despite the recent progress of fully-supervised action segmentation techniques, the performance is still not fully satisfactory. One main challenge is the problem of spatiotemporal variations (e.g. different people may perform the same activity in various ways). Therefore, we exploit unlabeled videos to address this problem by reformulating the action segmentation task as a cross-domain problem with domain discrepancy caused by spatio-temporal variations. To reduce the discrepancy, we propose Self-Supervised Temporal Domain Adaptation (SSTDA), which contains two self-supervised auxiliary tasks…
Nowadays, autonomous driving systems can detect, segment, and classify the surrounding obstacles using a monocular camera. However, state-of-the-art methods solving these tasks generally perform a fully supervised learning process and require a large amount of training labeled data. On another note, some self-supervised learning approaches can deal with detection and segmentation of dynamic obstacles using the temporal information available in video sequences. In this work, we propose to classify the detected obstacles depending on their motion pattern. We present a novel self-supervised frame…
Fast spin-echo (FSE) pulse sequences for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) offer important imaging contrast in clinically feasible scan times. T2-shuffling is widely used to resolve temporal signal dynamics in FSE acquisitions by exploiting temporal correlations via linear latent space and a predefined regularizer. However, predefined regularizers fail to exploit the incoherence especially for 2D acquisitions.Recent self-supervised learning methods achieve high-fidelity reconstructions by learning a regularizer from undersampled data without a standard supervised training data set. In this work…
