Efficient modeling of rarefied flow has drawn widespread interest for practical engineering applications. In the present work, we proposed the Grad's distribution function for 13 moments-based moment gas kinetic solver (G13-MGKS) and the macroscopic governing equations are derived based on the moment integral of discrete Boltzmann equation in the finite volume framework. Numerical fluxes at the cell interface related to the macroscopic variables, stress and heat flux can be reconstructed from the Boltzmann integration equation at surrounding points of the cell interface directly, so the complicated partial differential equations with tedious implementation of boundary conditions in the moment method can be avoided. Meanwhile, the explicit expression of numerical fluxes is proposed, which could release the present solver the from the discretization and numerical summation in molecular velocity space. To evaluate the Grad's distribution function for 13 moments in the present framework, the G13-MGKS with the discrete and explicit form of numerical fluxes are examined by several test cases covering the steady and unsteady rarefied flows. Numerical results indicate that the G13-MGKS could simulate continuum flows accurately and present reasonable prediction for rarefied flows at moderate Knudsen number. Moreover, the tests of computations and memory costs demonstrate that the present framework could preserve the highly efficient feature.
In rarefied gas flows, the spatial grid size could vary by several orders of magnitude in a single flow configuration (e.g., inside the Knudsen layer it is at the order of mean free path of gas molecules, while in the bulk region it is at a much larger hydrodynamic scale). Therefore, efficient implicit numerical method is urgently needed for time-dependent problems. However, the integro-differential nature of gas kinetic equations poses a grand challenge, as the gain part of the collision operator is non-invertible. Hence an iterative solver is required in each time step, which usually takes a…

We present a number of exact solutions to the linearised Grad equations for non-equilibrium rarefied gas flows and heat flows. The solutions include the flow and pressure fields associated to a point force placed in a rarefied gas flow close to a no-slip boundary and the temperature field for a point heat source placed in a heat flow close to a temperature jump boundary. We also derive the solution of the unsteady Grad equations in one dimension with a time-dependent point heat source term and the Grad analogue of the rotlet, a well-known singularity of Stokes flow which corresponds to a point…
We explore the scaling behavior of an unsteady flow that is generated by an oscillating body of finite size in a gas. If the gas is gradually rarefied, the Navier-Stokes equations begin to fail and a kinetic description of the flow becomes more appropriate. The failure of the Navier-Stokes equations can be thought to take place via two different physical mechanisms: either the continuum hypothesis breaks down as a result of a finite size effect; or local equilibrium is violated due to the high rate of strain. By independently tuning the relevant linear dimension and the frequency of the oscill…

A significant mathematical error is identified and corrected in a recent highly-cited paper on oscillatory flows of second-grade fluids [Fetecau & Fetecau (2005). Int. J. Eng. Sci., 43, 781--789]. The corrected solutions are shown to agree identically with numerical ones generated by a finite-difference scheme, while the original ones of Fetecau & Fetecau do not. A list of other recent papers in the literature that commit the error corrected in this Comment is compiled. Finally, a summary of related erroneous papers in this journal is presented as an Appendix.
This paper derives transport equations for medium rarefied gases from the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) model kinetic equation using a Hermite polynomial approximation for the monoatomic gas distribution function. We apply the Chapman-Enskog regularization method to Grad's velocity distribution function that corresponds to his thirteen moment equation, extending these equations to the third order of the Knudsen number. We show that the obtained set of Grad's regularized thirteen moment equations is complete, and that all previously obtained closures for Grad's thirteen moment equations are the s…
Explicit form of simplified Grad's 13 moments distribution function-based moment gas kinetic solver with unstructured meshes for the multiscale rarefied flow
The non-equilibrium gas dynamics is described by the Boltzmann equation, which can be solved numerically through the deterministic and stochastic methods. Due to the complicated collision term of the Boltzmann equation, many kinetic relaxation models have been proposed and used in the past seventy years for the study of rarefied flow. In order to develop a multiscale method for the rarefied and continuum flow simulation, by adopting the integral solution of the kinetic model equation a DVM-type unified gas-kinetic scheme (UGKS) has been constructed. The UGKS models the gas dynamics on the cell…
For gas flows, the Navier-Stokes (NS) equations are established by mathematically expressing conservations of mass, momentum and energy. The advantage of the NS equations over the Euler equations is that the NS equations have taken into account the viscous stress caused by the thermal motion of molecules. The viscous stress arises from applying Isaac Newton's second law to fluid motion, together with the assumption that the stress is proportional to the gradient of velocity1. Thus, the assumption is the only empirical element in the NS equations, and this is actually the reason why the NS equa…
We present an efficient deep learning technique for the model reduction of the Navier-Stokes equations for unsteady flow problems. The proposed technique relies on the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and the stochastic gradient descent method. Of particular interest is to predict the unsteady fluid forces for different bluff body shapes at low Reynolds number. The discrete convolution process with a nonlinear rectification is employed to approximate the mapping between the bluff-body shape and the fluid forces. The deep neural network is fed by the Euclidean distance function as the input a…
This Note determines the unsteady non-circulatory forces on an arbitrarily deforming panel with a Holder-continuous porosity distribution. An analytical expression for the non-circulatory pressure distribution is presented and evaluated for the special cases of uniform and variable-porosity panels undergoing harmonic deformations, where special attention is paid to the influence of the panel end conditions. These results constitute the first major step towards a complete linearized, unsteady aerodynamic theory for lifting porous bodies, which may have potential application to the performance e…
We provide a integration of Navier-Stokes equations concerning the unsteady-state laminar flow of an incompressible, isothermal (newtonian) fluid in a cylindrical vessel spinning about its symmetry axis, say $z$, and inside which the liquid velocity starts with a non-zero axial component as well. Basic physical assumptions are that the pressure axial gradient keeps itself on its hydrostatic value and that no radial velocity exists. In such a way the PDEs become uncoupled and can be faced separately from each other. We succeed in computing both the unsteady velocities, i.e. the axial $v_z$ and …
Moment expansions are used as model reduction technique in kinetic gas theory to approximate the Boltzmann equation. Rarefied gas models based on so-called moment equations became increasingly popular recently. However, in a seminal paper by Holway [Phys. Fluids 7/6, (1965)] a fundamental restriction on the existence of the expansion was used to explain sub-shock behavior of shock profile solutions obtained by moment equations. Later, Weiss [Phys. Fluids 8/6, (1996)] argued that this restriction does not exist. We will revisit and discuss their findings and explain that both arguments have a c…
We propose rotation inferred from the polar decomposition of the flow gradient as a diagnostic for elliptic (or vortex-type) invariant regions in non-autonomous dynamical systems. We consider here two- and three-dimensional systems, in which polar rotation can be characterized by a single angle. For this polar rotation angle (PRA), we derive explicit formulas using the singular values and vectors of the flow gradient. We find that closed level sets of the PRA reveal elliptic islands in great detail, and singular level sets of the PRA uncover centers of such islands. Both features turn out to b…
We describe and characterize a method for estimating the pressure field corresponding to velocity field measurements, such as those obtained by using particle image velocimetry. The pressure gradient is estimated from a time series of velocity fields for unsteady calculations or from a single velocity field for quasi-steady calculations. The corresponding pressure field is determined based on median polling of several integration paths through the pressure gradient field in order to reduce the effect of measurement errors that accumulate along individual integration paths. Integration paths ar…

In this paper, we study the unsteady hydromagnetic flow of a Walter's fluid (Model B') down an open inclined channel of width 2a and depth d under gravity, the walls of the channel being normal to the surface of the bottom under the influence of a uniform transverse magnetic field. A uniform tangential stress is applied at the free surface in the direction of flow. We have evaluated the velocity distribution by using Laplace transform and finite Fourier Sine transform technique. The velocity distribution has been obtained taking different form of time dependent pressure gradient g(t), viz., i)…
We investigate the influence of unsteady partial cavitation on the fluid-structure interaction of a freely vibrating hydrofoil section at high Reynolds numbers. We consider an elastically-mounted NACA66 hydrofoil section that is free to vibrate in the transverse flow direction. Cavitating flow dynamics coupled with the transverse vibration are studied at low angles of attack. For the numerical study, we employ a recently developed unified variational fluid-structure interaction framework based on homogeneous mixture-based cavitation with hybrid URANS-LES turbulence modeling. We first validate …
We recall the PFS model constructed for the modeling of unsteady mixed flows in closed water pipes where transition points between the free surface and pressurized flow are treated as a free boundary associated to a discontinuity of the gradient of pressure. Then we present a numerical kinetic scheme for the computations of unsteady mixed flows in closed water pipes. This kinetic method that we call FKA for "Full Kinetic Approach" is an easy and mathematically elegant way to deal with multiple transition points when the changes of state between free surface and pressurized flow occur. We use t…
We derive the general solution of the unsteady Stokes equations for an unbounded fluid in spherical polar coordinates, in both time and frequency domains. The solution is an expansion in vector spherical harmonics and given as a sum of a particular solution, proportional to pressure gradient exhibiting power-law spatial dependence, and a solution of vector Helmholtz equation decaying exponentially in far field, the decomposition originally introduced by Lamb. The solution can be applied to construct the transient exterior flow induced by an arbitrary velocity distribution at the spherical boun…
Molecular dynamic (MD) simulation is used to study slip at the fluid-solid boundary in an unsteady flow based on the Stokes second problem. An increase in slip is observed in comparison to the steady flow for shear rates below the critical shear rate of the corresponding steady flow. This increased slip is attributed to fluid inertial forces not represented in a steady flow. An unsteady mathematical model for slip is established, which estimates the increment in slip at the boundary. The model shows that slip is also dependent on acceleration in addition to the shear rate of fluid at the wall.…
We make a brief historical review to the moment model reduction to the kinetic equations, particularly the Grad's moment method for Boltzmann equation. The focus is on the hyperbolicity of the reduced model, which is essential to the existence of its classical solution as a Cauchy problem. The theory of the framework we developed in last years is then introduced, which may preserve the hyperbolic nature of the kinetic equations with high universality. Some lastest progress on the comparison between models with/without hyperbolicity is presented to validate the hyperbolic moment models for rare…
A experimental study of low Reynolds numbers unsteady pipe flows of a yield stress shear thinning fluid (Carbopol- 980) is presented. The investigation of the solid-fluid transition in a rheometric flow in the presence and in the ab- sence of the wall slip reveals a coupling between the irreversible deformation states and the wall slip phenomenon. Particularly, the presence of wall slip nearly suppresses the scaling of the deformation power deficit associated to the rheological hysteresis with the rate at which the material is forced. The irreversible solid-fluid transition and the wall slip b…
Thermocapillary migration of a planar non-deformable droplet in flow fields with two uniform temperature gradients at moderate and large Marangoni numbers is studied numerically by using the front-tracking method. It is observed that the thermocapillary motion of planar droplets in the uniform temperature gradients is steady at moderate Marangoni numbers, but unsteady at large Marangoni numbers. The instantaneous migration velocity at a fixed migration distance decreases with increasing Marangoni numbers. The simulation results of the thermocapillary droplet migration at large Marangoni number…

A series of reduced-order numerical simulations on a specific bluff body type (v-gutters) in a subsonic duct flow is done to assess the unsteady wake dynamics. Two of the v-gutter's geometrical parameters are varied: the v-gutter's base angle ($θ$) and the size of a slit ($ξ$) at the leading-edge of the v-gutter. Turbulent flow kinematics and pressure field are analyzed to evaluate the unsteadiness at a freestream Mach number of $M_\infty = 0.25$ and a freestream Reynolds number based on bluff body's transverse length (L) of $Re_L=0.1 \times 10^6$. Five v-gutter angles are considered ($θ$, $^\…
It is shown that the steady unidirectional flow with vanishing heat flux considered by B. C. Eu [Phys. Rev. E 65, 031202 (2002)], and earlier by Uribe and Garcia--Colin [Phys. Rev. E 60, 4052 (1999)], is inconsistent with the exact conservation laws of mass, momentum, and energy. The inconsistency does not lie in the assumed symmetry properties of the flow but in the stationarity assumption. The unsteady problem is considered and its solution from the Boltzmann equation for Maxwell molecules is given.
In this paper, we consider the capabilities of the Boltzmann equation with the Shakhov and ellipsoidal models for the collision term to capture the characteristics of rarefied gas flows. The benchmark is performed by comparing the results obtained using these kinetic model equations with direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) results for particles interacting via ab initio potentials. The analysis is restricted to channel flows between parallel plates and we consider three flow problems, namely: the heat transfer between stationary plates, the Couette flow and the heat transfer under shear. The …
The head-on collision of two identical droplets is investigated based on the BGK-Boltzmann equation. Gauss-Hermite quadratures with different degree of precision are used to solve the kinetic equation, so that the continuum (solution truncated at the Navier-Stokes order) and non-continuum (rarefied gas dynamics) solutions can be compared. When the kinetic equation is solved with adequate accuracy, prominent variations of the vertical velocity (the collision is in the horizontal direction), the viscous stress components, and droplet morphology are observed during the formation of liquid bridge,…
