Physical principles such as unitarity, causality, and locality can constrain the space of consistent effective field theories (EFTs) by imposing two-sided bounds on the allowed values of Wilson coefficients. In this paper, we consider the bounds that arise from the requirement of low-energy causality alone, without appealing to any assumptions about UV physics. We focus on shift-symmetric theories, and consider bounds that arise from the propagation around both a homogeneous and a spherically-symmetric background. We find that low-energy causality, namely the requirement that there are no resolvable time advances within the regime of validity of the EFT, produces two-sided bounds in agreement with compact positivity constraints previously obtained from $2 \rightarrow 2$ scattering amplitude dispersion relations using full crossing symmetry.
We suggest that classicalization can cure non-local quantum field theories from acausal divergences in scattering amplitudes, restoring unitarity and causality. In particular, in "trans-non-local" limit, the formation of non-perturbative classical configurations, called {\it classicalons}, in scatterings like $ϕϕ\rightarrow ϕϕ$, can avoid typical acausal divergences.
The regularized theories are non-local at the scale of the cutoff, leading so to the usual difficulties of non-local theories. In this work the conservation laws and causality are investigated for classical field theories with multi-cluster action. The conservation laws are found to play a less significant role than in local theories because due to the non-locality the conserved quantities are not integrals of the motion, and they can exist even without underlying symmetries. Moreover, the conservation of the energy can not prevent instability brought about by the unbounded nature of the energ…
From the basic chiral and anti-chiral Poisson bracket algebra of the SL(2,R) WZNW model, non-equal time Poisson brackets are derived. Through Hamiltonian reduction we deduce the corresponding brackets for its coset theories.
We consider the gauge invariance of the standard Yang-Mills model in the framework of the causal approach of Epstein-Glaser and Scharf and determine the generic form of the anomalies. The method used is based Epstein-Glaser approach to renormalization theory. In the case of quantum electrodynamics we obtain quite easily the absence of anomalies in all orders.
A condensed introduction to the basic concepts of causal perturbation theory is given. Causal perturbation theory is a mathematically rigorous approach to renormalization theory, which makes it possible to put the theoretical setup of perturbative quantum field theory on a sound mathematical basis by avoiding infinities from the outset. It goes back to a seminal work by Henri Epstein and Vladimir Jurko Glaser published in 1973, where a specific causality condition was imposed at every order of perturbation theory in the case of scalar quantum field theory such that divergent integrals could be…
We study causality in non-commutative quantum field theory with a space-space non-commutativity. We employ the S-operator approach of Bogoliubov-Shirkov(BS). We generalize the BS criterion of causality to the noncommutative theory. The criterion to test causality leads to a nonzero difference between T*-product and T-product as a condition of causality violation for a spacelike separation. We discuss two examples; one in a scalar theory and one in the Yukawa theory. In particular, in the context of a non-commutative Yukawa theory, with the interaction Lagrangian $\barψ(x)\starψ(x)\starϕ(x)$, i…
(Anti)causal boundary conditions being imposed on the (seemingly) Hermitian Quantum Theory (HQT) as described in standard textbooks lead to an (Anti)Causal Quantum Theory ((A)CQT) with an indefinite metric. Therefore, an (anti)causal neutral scalar field is not Hermitian, as one (anti)causal neutral scalar field consists of a non-Hermitian linear combination of two (Hermitian) acausal fields. Fundamental symmetries in (A)CQT are addressed. The quantum theoretical (transition) probability and antiparticle concepts are revised. Imaginary parts of cross sections and refraction indices are related…
We give simple representations for quantum theories in which the position commutators are non vanishing constants. A particular representation reproduces results found using the Moyal star product. The notion of exact localization being meaningless in these theories, we adapt the notion of ``maximally localized states'' developed in another context . We find that gaussian functions play this role in a 2+1 dimensional model in which the non commutation relations concern positions only. An interpretation of the wave function in this non commutative geometry is suggested. We also analyze higher d…
We study quantized Yang-Mills theory with massive vector fields in the framework of causal perturbation theory. The most general form of the interaction which is invariant under operator gauge transformations is pointed out. The generator of these transformations generally fails to be nilpotent. This defect, however, is easily cured by including scalar fields in the gauge transformations. Due to gauge invariance these scalar gauge fields couple to the Yang-Mills fields with predicted strength. We also show that invariance under ghost charge conjugation fixes the form of the interaction complet…
As argued previously, amplitudes of quantum field theories on noncommutative space and time cannot be computed using naive path integral Feynman rules. One of the proposals is to use the Gell-Mann--Low formula with time-ordering applied before performing the integrations. We point out that the previously given prescription should rather be regarded as an interaction point time-ordering. Causality is explicitly violated inside the region of interaction. It is nevertheless a consistent procedure, which seems to be related to the interaction picture of quantum mechanics. In this framework we comp…
It is shown that the linearized fields of causal variational principles give rise to linear bosonic quantum field theories. The properties of these field theories are studied and compared with the axioms of local quantum physics. Distinguished quasi-free states are constructed.
Analyticity and crossing properties of four point function are investigated in conformal field theories in the frameworks of Wightman axioms. A Hermitian scalar conformal field, satisfying the Wightman axioms, is considered. The crucial role of microcausality in deriving analyticity domains is discussed and domains of analyticity are presented. A pair of permuted Wightman functions are envisaged. The crossing property is derived by appealing to the technique of analytic completion for the pair of permuted Wightman functions. The operator product expansion of a pair of scalar fields is studied …
We present the causal construction of perturbative Yang-Mills theories in four(3+1)-dimensional space-time. We work with free quantum fields throughout. The inductive causal method by Epstein and Glaser leads directly to a finite perturbation series and does not rely on an intermediary regularization of the theory. The causal method naturally separates the physical infrared problem of massless theories from ultraviolet-sensitive features like normalizability by regarding the distributional character of the S-matrix. We prove the normalizability of the Yang-Mills theory with fermionic matter fi…
The vacuum diagram is calculated at second order for theories with self-interacting massless fields in the framework of finite causal perturbation theory. It is pointed out that the infrared behaviour of the vacuum diagram leads to unstable Fock vacua for QCD or massless QED, but not for quantum gravity. Therefore a radical rearrangement of the physical system must take place for such theories. Conversely, stability of the Fock vacuum for massless interacting fields is another hint at the possibility that quantum gravity should be treated as an effective theory.
Within the low-energy effective field theories of QED and gravity, the low-energy speed of light or that of gravitational waves can typically be mildly superluminal in curved spacetimes. Related to this, small scattering time advances relative to the curved background can emerge from known effective field theory coefficients for photons or gravitons. We clarify why these results are not in contradiction with causality, analyticity or Lorentz invariance, and highlight various subtleties that arise when dealing with superluminalities and time advances in the gravitational context. Consistent low…
We study the constraints coming from local causality requirement in various $2+1$ dimensional dynamical theories of gravity. In topologically massive gravity, with a single parity non-invariant massive degree of freedom, and in new massive gravity, with two massive spin-$2$ degrees of freedom, causality and unitarity are compatible with each other and both require the Newton's constant to be negative. In their extensions, such as the Born-Infeld gravity and the minimal massive gravity the situation is similar and quite different from their higher dimensional counterparts, such as quadratic (e.…
In Lovelock theories, gravity can travel faster or slower than light. The causal structure is determined by the characteristic hypersurfaces. We generalise a recent result of Izumi to prove that any Killing horizon is a characteristic hypersurface for all gravitational degrees of freedom of a Lovelock theory. Hence gravitational signals cannot escape from the region inside such a horizon. We investigate the hyperbolicity of Lovelock theories by determining the characteristic hypersurfaces for various backgrounds. First we consider Ricci flat type N spacetimes. We show that characteristic hyper…
In this thesis quantum gauge theories are considered in the framework of local, causal perturbation theory. Gauge invariance is described in terms of the BRS formalism. Local interacting field operators are constructed perturbatively and field equations are established. A nilpotent BRS transformation is defined on the local algebra of fields. It allows the definition of the algebra of local observables as an operator cohomology. This algebra of local observables can be represented in a Hilbert space. The interacting field operators are defined in terms of time ordered products of free field op…
The system of multi-gravitons has been considered before in the framework of functional formalism. We consider here the system of multi-gravitons in the causal formalism of quantum field theory. We derive in this formalism the fact that distinct gravitons cannot interact. The proof is based on a careful analysis of the first two orders of the perturbation theory.
Causality in a shockwave state is related to the analytic properties of a four-point correlation function. Extending recent results for scalar probes, we show that this constrains the couplings of the stress tensor to light spinning operators in conformal field theory, and interpret these constraints in terms of the interaction with null energy. For spin-1 and spin-2 conserved currents in four dimensions, the resulting inequalities are a subset of the Hofman-Maldacena conditions for positive energy deposition. It is well known that energy conditions in holographic theories are related to causa…
We derive new examples for algebraic relations of interacting fields in local perturbative quantum field theory. The fundamental building blocks in this approach are time ordered products of free (composed) fields. We give explicit formulas for the construction of Poincare covariant ones, which were already known to exist through cohomological arguments. For a large class of theories the canonical energy momentum tensor is shown to be conserved. Classical theories without dimensionful couplings admit an improved tensor that is additionally traceless. On the example of phi^4-theory we discuss t…
In fundamental theories that accounts for quantum gravitational effects, the spacetime causal structure is expected to be quantum uncertain. Previous studies of quantum causal structure focused on finite-dimensional systems. Here we present an algebraic framework that incorporates both finite- and infinite-dimensional systems including quantum fields. Thanks to the absence of a definite spacetime causal structure, Lagrangian quantum field theories can be studied on a quantum superposition of spacetimes with a point identification structure.
The causal approach to perturbative quantum field theory is presented in detail, which goes back to a seminal work by Henri Epstein and Vladimir Jurko Glaser in 1973. Causal perturbation theory is a mathematically rigorous approach to renormalization theory, which makes it possible to put the theoretical setup of perturbative quantum field theory on a sound mathematical basis. Epstein and Glaser solved this problem for a special class of distributions, the time-ordered products, that fulfill a causality condition, which itself is a basic requirement in axiomatic quantum field theory. In their …
Higher-derivative gravity theories, such as Lovelock theories, generalize Einstein's general relativity (GR). Modifications to GR are expected when curvatures are near Planckian and appear in string theory or supergravity. But can such theories describe gravity on length scales much larger than the Planck cutoff length scale? Here we find causality constraints on Lovelock theories that arise from the requirement that the equations of motion (EOM) of perturbations be hyperbolic. We find a general expression for the "effective metric" in field space when Lovelock theories are perturbed around so…
The inaction approach introduced previously for phi^4 is generalized to gauge theories. It combines the advantages of the effective field theory and causal approaches to quantum fields. Also, it suggests ways to generalizing gauge theories.
The causal entropy bound (CEB) is confronted with recent explicit entropy calculations in weakly and strongly coupled conformal field theories (CFTs) in arbitrary dimension $D$. For CFT's with a large number of fields, $N$, the CEB is found to be valid for temperatures not exceeding a value of order $M_P/N^{1\over D-2}$, in agreement with large $N$ bounds in generic cut-off theories of gravity, and with the generalized second law. It is also shown that for a large class of models including high-temperature weakly coupled CFT's and strongly coupled CFT's with AdS duals, the CEB, despite the fac…
For a non-equilibrium physical system defined along a closed time path (CTP), a key constraint is the so-called largest time equation, which is a consequence of unitarity and implies causality. In this paper, we present a simple proof that if the propagators of a non-equilibrium effective action have the proper pole structure, the largest time equation is obeyed to all loop orders. Ghost fields and BRST symmetry are not needed. In particular, the arguments for the proof can also be used to show that if ghost fields are introduced, their contributions vanish.
The gauge dependence of the time-ordered products for Yang-Mills theories is analysed in perturbation theory by means of the causal method of Epstein and Glaser together with perturbative gauge invariance. This approach allows a simple inductive proof of the gauge independence of the physical S-matrix.
Gravitational Faraday rotation, gravitational spin Hall effect, and spin-refined causality analysis from Magnusian matrix in effective field theories of gravity
We suggest that in the proper definition, Quantum Field Theories are quantum mechanical system which 'live' on the space of causal structures ${\cal C}$ of spacetime. That is, for any QFT a Hilbert space ${\cal H}$ on which local operators live is assigned not for each Lorentzian metric $g$, but for each causal structure ${\cal C}$. In practice one uses 'conformal frames' which all provide equivalent descriptions of the same QFT. To put it differently, Quantum Field Theories only know about causal structure of spacetime, and not its full Lorentzian metric. The Weyl group and the local RG flow …
Various extensions of standard inflationary models have been proposed recently by adding vector fields. Because they are generally motivated by large-scale anomalies, and the possibility of statistical anisotropy of primordial fluctuations, such models require to introduce non-standard couplings between vector fields on the one hand, and either gravity or scalar fields on the other hand. In this article, we study models involving a vector field coupled to a scalar field. We derive restrictive necessary conditions for these models to be both stable (Hamiltonian bounded by below) and causal (hyp…
Indefinite causal structure is generically present in theories of quantum gravity admitting a path integral formulation. We show that summing over causal structures eliminates ultraviolet divergences of matter QFT and resolves spacetime singularities using the non-perturbative World Quantum Gravity approach. Independent information-theoretic and model-independent considerations suggest that the mechanism of ultraviolet regularization by indefinite causal structure also applies to other theories of quantum gravity.
The k-essence theories admit in general the superluminal propagation of the perturbations on classical backgrounds. We show that in spite of the superluminal propagation the causal paradoxes do not arise in these theories and in this respect they are not less safe than General Relativity.
An alternative approach to perturbative Yang-Mills theories in four (3+1) dimensional space-time based on the causal Epstein-Glaser method in QFT was recently proposed. In this short note we show that the set of identities between C-number distributions expressing nonabelian gauge invariance in the causal approach imply identities which are analogous to the well-known Slavnov-Taylor identities. We explicitly derive the Z-factor relations at one-loop level.
We revisit the previously unsolved problems of ensuring Lorentz invariance and non-perturbative unitarity in Lee-Wick theories. We base our discussion on an ultraviolet completion of QED by Lee-Wick ghost fields, which is argued to be asymptotically safe. We argue that as long as the state space is based upon a suitable choice of distributions of a type invented by Gel'fand and Shilov, the Lee-Wick ghosts can be eliminated while preserving Lorentz invariance to produce a unitary theory. The method for eliminating ghosts is in principle non-perturbatively well-defined, in contrast with some pre…
It is well known that non-local theories of gravity have been a flourish arena of studies for many reasons, for instance, the UV incompleteness of General Relativity (GR). In this paper we check the consistency of ST-homogeneous Gödel-type metrics within the non-local gravity framework. The non-local models considered here are ghost-free but not necessarily renormalizable since we focus on the classical solutions of the field equations. Furthermore, the non-locality is displayed in the action through transcendental entire functions of the d'Alembert operator $\Box$ that are mathematically repr…
In theories with derivative (self-)interactions, the propagation of perturbations on nontrivial field configurations is determined by effective metrics. Generalized scalar-tensor theories belong in this class and this implies that the matter fields and gravitational perturbations do not necessarily experience the same causal structure. Motivated by this, we explore the causal structure of black holes as perceived by scalar fields in the Horndeski class. We consider linearized perturbations on a fixed background metric that describes a generic black hole. The effective metric that determines th…
We examine the question as to whether the f(R) gravity theories, in both metric and in Palatini formalisms, permit space-times in which the causality is violated. We show that the field equations of these f(R) gravity theories admit solutions with violation of causality for a physically well-motivated perfect-fluid matter content.
Entanglement generation by Newtonian gravitational potential between objects has been widely discussed to reveal the quantum nature of gravity. In this paper, we perform a quantum field theoretical analysis of a slightly modified version of the gedanken experiment by Mari and co-workers. We show that decoherence due to the presence of a detector propagates with the speed of light in terms of a retarded Green's function, as it should be consistent with causality of relativistic field theories. The quantum nature of fields, such as quantum fluctuations or emission of gravitons expressed in terms…
Field theories based on non-commutative spacetimes exhibit very distinctive nonlocal effects which mix the ultraviolet with the infrared in bizarre ways. In particular if the time coordinate is involved in the non-commutativity the theory seems to be seriously acausal and inconsistent with conventional Hamiltonian evolution. To illustrate these effects we study the scattering of wave packets in a field theory with space/time non-commutativity. In this theory we find effects which seem to precede their causes and rigid rods which grow instead of Lorentz contract as they are boosted. These field…
Effective field theories (EFT) parameterize the long-distance effects of short-distance dynamics whose details may or may not be known. It is known that EFT coefficients must obey certain positivity constraints if causality and unitarity are satisfied at all scales. We explore those constraints from the perspective of 2 to 2 scattering amplitudes of a light real scalar field, using semi-definite programming to carve out the space of allowed EFT coefficients for a given mass threshold M. We point out that all EFT parameters are bounded both below and above, effectively showing that dimensional …
We provide evidence for the validity of AdS/CFT correspondence in the Coulomb branch by comparing the Yang-Mills effective action with the potential between waves on two separated test 3-branes in the presence of a large number of other 3-branes. For constant gauge fields excited on the branes, this requires that the supergravity potential in a $AdS_5 \times S^5$ background is the {\it same} as that in flat space, despite the fact that both propagators and couplings of some relevant supergravity modes are different. We show that this is indeed true, due to a subtle cancellation. With time-depe…
Starting from certain causality conditions and a discrete form of general covariance, we derive a very general family of classically stochastic, sequential growth dynamics for causal sets. The resulting theories provide a relatively accessible ``half way house'' to full quantum gravity that possibly contains the latter's classical limit (general relativity). Because they can be expressed in terms of state models for an assembly of Ising spins living on the relations of the causal set, these theories also illustrate how non-gravitational matter can arise dynamically from the causal set without …
We investigate noncommutative deformations of quantum field theories for different star products, particularly emphasizing the locality properties and the regularity of the deformed fields. Using functional analysis methods, we describe the basic structural features of the vacuum expectation values of star-modified products of fields and field commutators. As an alternative to microcausality, we introduce a notion of $θ$-locality, where $θ$ is the noncommutativity parameter. We also analyze the conditions for the convergence and continuity of star products and define the function algebra that …
Theories with a curved momentum space, which became recently of interest in the quantum-gravity literature, can in general violate many apparently robust aspects of our current description of the laws of physics, including relativistic invariance, locality, causality and global momentum conservation. We here explore some aspects of the particularly severe pathologies arising in generic theories with curved momentum space for what concerns causality and momentum conservation. However, we also report results suggesting that when momentum space is maximally symmetric, and the theory is formulated…
This paper considers diffeomorphism invariant theories of gravity coupled to matter, with second order equations of motion. This includes Einstein-Maxwell and Einstein-scalar field theory with (after field redefinitions) the most general parity-symmetric four-derivative effective field theory corrections. A gauge-invariant approach is used to study the characteristics associated to the physical degrees of freedom in an arbitrary background solution. The symmetries of the principal symbol arising from diffeomorphism invariance and the action principle are determined. For gravity coupled to a si…
The possibility of non-causal signal propagation is examined for various theories of dense matter. This investigation requires a discussion of definitions of causality, together with interpretations of spacetime position. Specific examples are used to illustrate the satisfaction or violation of causality in realistic calculations.
We explore the description of bulk causal structure in a dual field theory. We observe that in the spacetime dual to a spacelike non-commutative field theory, the causal structure in the boundary directions is modified asymptotically. We propose that this modification is described in the dual theory by a modification of the micro-causal light cone. Previous studies of this micro-causal light cone for spacelike non-commutativite field theories agree with the expectations from the bulk spacetime. We describe the spacetime dual to field theories with lightlike non-commutativity, and show that the…
We discuss the physical meaning and the geometric interpretation of causality implementation in classical field theories. Causality is normally implemented through kinematical constraints on fields but we show that in a zero-distance limit they also carry a dynamical information, which calls for a revision of our standard concepts of interacting fields. The origin of infinities and other inconsistencies in field theories is traced to fields defined with support on the lightcone; a finite and consistent field theory requires a lightcone generator as the field support.
