It is well-known that for any commutative unitary ring $\mathbf{R}$, the Serre conjecture ring $\mathbf{R}\langle X \rangle$, i.e., the localization of the univariate polynomial ring $\mathbf{R}[X]$ at monic polynomials, is a Bézout domain of Krull dimension $\leq 1$ if so is $\mathbf{R}$. Consequently, defining by induction $\mathbf{R}\langle X_1,\ldots,X_n \rangle:=(\mathbf{R}\langle X_1,\ldots,X_{n-1}\rangle)\langle X_n\rangle$, the ring $\mathbf{R}\langle X_1,\ldots,X_n \rangle$ is a Bézout domain of Krull dimension $\leq 1$ if so is $\mathbf{R}$. The fact that $\mathbf{R}\langle X_1,\ldots,X_n \rangle$ is a Bézout domain when $\mathbf{R}$ is a valuation domain of Krull dimension $\leq 1$ was the cornerstone of Brewer and Costa's theorem stating that if $\mathbf{R}$ is a one-dimensional arithmetical ring then finitely generated projective $\mathbf{R}[X_1,\dots,X_n]$-modules are extended. It is also the key of the proof of the Gröbner Ring Conjecture in the lexicographic order case, namely the fact that for any valuation domain $\mathbf{R}$ of Krull dimension $\leq 1$, any $n \in \mathbb{N}_{>0}$, and any finitely generated ideal $I$ of $\mathbf{R}[X_1, \dots, X_n]$, the ideal $\operatorname{LT}(I)$ generated by the leading terms of the elements of $I$ with respect to the lexicographic monomial order is finitely generated. Since the ring $\mathbf{R}\langle X_1,\ldots,X_n\rangle$ can also be defined directly as the localization of the multivariate polynomial ring $\mathbf{R}[X_1,\dots,X_n]$ at polynomials whose leading coefficients according to the lexicographic monomial order with $X_1<X_2<\cdots<X_n$ is $1$, we propose to generalize the fact that $\mathbf{R}\langle X_1,\ldots,X_n\rangle$ is a Bézout domain of Krull dimension $\leq 1$ if so is $\mathbf{R}$ to any rational monomial order, bolstering the evidence for the Gröbner Ring Conjecture in the rational case.
Throughout, let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring. A ring $R$ satisfies Serre's condition $(S_{\ell})$ if for all $P \in \Spec R,$ $\depth R_P \geq \min \{ \ell , \dim R_P \}$. Serre's condition has been a topic of expanding interest. In this paper, we examine a generalization of Serre's condition $(S_{\ell}^j)$. We say a ring satisfies $(S_{\ell}^j)$ when $\depth R_P \geq \min \{ \ell , \dim R_P -j \}$ for all $P \in \Spec R$. We prove generalizations of results for rings satisfying Serre's condition.
On a smooth variety, Serre's intersection formula computes intersection multiplicities via an alternating sum of the lengths of Tor groups. When the variety is singular, the corresponding sum can be a divergent series. But there are alternate geometric approaches for assigning (often fractional) intersection multiplicities in some singular settings. Our motivating question comes from Fulton, who asks whether an analytic continuation of the divergent series from Serre's formula can be related to these fractional multiplicities. By applying work of Avramov and Buchweitz, we positively answer Ful…
In this short note, we give a characterization of domains satisfying Serre's condition $(\mathrm{R}_1)$ in terms of their canonical modules. In the special case of toric rings, this generalizes a result of the second author (K. Yanagawa, Dualizing complexes of seminormal affine semigroup rings and toric face rings, J. Algebra 425 (2015).) where the normality is described in terms of the "shape" of the canonical module.
Let $R$ be a commutative noetherian ring, let $\frak a$ and $\frak b$ be two ideals of $R$; and let $\Ss$ be a Serre subcategory of $R$-modules. We give a necessary and sufficient condition by which $\Ss$ satisfies $C_{\frak a}$ and $C_{\frak b}$ conditions. As an conclusion we show that over a artinian local ring, every Serre subcategory satisfies $C_{\frak a}$ condition. We also show that $\Ss_{\frak a}$ is closed under extension of modules. If $\Ss$ is a torsion subcategory, we prove that $S$ satisfies $C_{\frak a}$ condition. We prove that $C_{\frak a}$ condition can be transferred via rin…
Let R be a commutative Noetherian ring of dimension d and B=R[X_1,\ldots,X_m,Y_1^{\pm 1},\ldots,Y_n^{\pm 1}] a Laurent polynomial ring over R. If A=B[Y,f^{-1}] for some f\in R[Y], then we prove the following results: (i) If f is a monic polynomial, then Serre dimension of A is \leq d. In case n=0, this result is due to Bhatwadekar, without the condition that f is a monic polynomial. (ii) The p-th Euler class group E^p(A) of A, defined by Bhatwadekar and Raja Sridharan, is trivial for p\geq max \{d+1, \dim A -p+3\}. In case m=n=0, this result is due to Mandal-Parker.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring. The notion of regular sequences with respect to a Serre class of $R$-modules is introduced and some of their essential properties are given. Then in the local case, we explore a theory of Cohen-Macaulayness with respect to Serre classes.
In this note we characterize the affine semigroup rings K[S] over an arbitrary field K that satisfy condition R_l of Serre. Our characterization is in terms of the face lattice of the positive cone pos(S) of S. We start by reviewing some basic facts about the faces of pos(S) and consequences for the monomial primes of K[S]. After proving our characterization we turn our attention to the Rees algebras of a special class of monomial ideals in a polynomial ring over a field. In this special case, some of the characterizing criteria are always satisfied. We give examples of nonnormal affine semigr…
Aghapournahr and Melkersson introduced the notion of Melkersson condition on a Serre subcategory of the module category over a commutative noetherian ring. This paper investigates the structure of set of prime ideals satisfying a Melkersson condition on a Serre subcategory. We try to calculate members of a set of these prime ideals for a subcategory consisting of extension modules in two given Serre subcategories of the module category. Meanwhile, we classify the structure of set of prime ideals satisfying a Melkersson condition over a 0-dimensional ring, a 1-dimensional local ring, and a 2-di…
Let $R$ be a commutative noetherian ring, $\frak a$ be an ideal of $R$, $\cS$ be an arbitrary Serre subcategory of $R$-modules and let $\cN$ be the subcategory of finitely generated $R$-modules. In this paper, we study $\cN\cS$-$\frak a$-cofinite modules with respect to the extension subcategory $\cN\cS$ when $\dim R/\frak a\leq 2$. We also study $\frak a$-cofiniteness with respect to a new dimension.
In this note, we study Serre's property $(S_i)$, and its relation to Alexander duality for monomial ideals in a polynomial ring over a field. We describe ideals that define the non-Cohen-Macaulay- and the non-$(S_i)$-loci of finitely generated modules over regular rings, and show that minimal prime ideals in these loci are homogeneous, in the graded case. We show that a square-free monomial ideal has property $(S_i)$ if and only if its Alexander dual has a linear resolution up to homological degree $i-1$. We prove that for square-free monomial ideals, having property $(S_2)$ is equivalent to b…
Let $R$ be a Noetherian commutative ring of positive dimension. The Hochster-Huneke graph of $R$ (sometimes called the dual graph of Spec $R$ and denoted by $\mathcal{G} (R)$) is defined as follows: the vertices are the minimal prime ideals of $R$, and the edges are the pairs of prime ideals $(P_1,P_2)$ with height $(P_1 + P_2) = 1$. If $R$ satisfies Serre's property $(S_2)$, then $\mathcal{G} (R)$ is connected. In this note, we provide lower and upper bounds for the maximum diameter of Hochster-Huneke graphs of Stanley-Reisner rings satisfying $(S_2)$. These bounds depend on the number of var…
A local ring R is said to be a Roberts ring if tau_R([R]) = [Spec R]_dim R, where tau_R is the Riemann-Roch map for Spec R. Such rings satisfy a vanishing theorem for the Serre intersection multiplicity, as was established by Paul Roberts in his proof of the Serre vanishing conjecture. It is known that complete intersections are Roberts rings, and the first author proved that a determinantal ring is a Roberts ring precisely if it is complete intersection. Let A_d(n) denote the affine cone of the Grassmannian G_d(n) under the Plucker embedding. We determine which of the rings A_d(n) are Roberts…
This paper establishes an analogue of the special chain theorem for the embedding dimension of polynomial rings, with direct application on the (embedding) codimension. In particular, we recover a classic result on the transfer of regularity to polynomial rings (initially proved via a combination of Serre's result on finite global dimension and Hilbert theorem on syzygies). A second application characterizes regularity in general settings of localizations of polynomial rings, including Nagata rings and Serre's conjecture rings.
Let R be a regular local ring. Let G be a reductive R-group scheme. A conjecture of Grothendieck and Serre predicts that a principal G-bundle over R is trivial if it is trivial over the quotient field of R. The conjecture is known when R contains a field. We prove the conjecture for a large class of regular local rings not containing fields in the case when G is split.
Let R be a commutative noetherian ring. Denote by mod R the category of finitely generated R-modules. In the present paper, we first provide various sufficient (and necessary) conditions for a full subcategory of mod R to be a Serre subcategory, which include several refinements of theorems of Stanley and Wang and of Takahashi with simpler proofs. Next we consider when an IKE-closed subcategory of mod R is a torsionfree class. We investigate certain modules out of which all modules of finite length can be built by taking direct summands and extensions, and then we apply it to show that the IKE…
Let (R,m) be a local ring with prime ideals p and q such that p+q is an m-primary ideal. If R is regular and contains a field, and dim(R/p)+dim(R/q)=dim(R), we prove that p^{(r)}\cap q^{(n)}\subseteq m^{m+n} for all positive integers r and s. This is proved using a generalization of Serre's Intersection Theorem which we apply to a hypersurface R/fR. The generalization gives conditions that guarantee that Serre's bound on the intersection dimension dim(R/p)+dim(R/q) \leq dim(R) holds when R is nonregular.
Given a graph $G$ whose edges are labeled by ideals of a commutative ring $R$ with identity, a generalized spline is a vertex labeling of $G$ by the elements of $R$ so that the difference of labels on adjacent vertices is an element of the corresponding edge ideal. The set of all generalized splines on a graph $G$ with base ring $R$ has a ring and an $R$-module structure. In this paper, we focus on the freeness of generalized spline modules over certain graphs with the base ring $R = k[x_1 , \ldots , x_d]$ where $k$ is a field. We first show the freeness of generalized spline modules on graphs…
Gröbner bases are a fundamental tool when studying ideals in multivariate polynomial rings. More recently there has been a growing interest in transferring techniques from the field case to other coefficient rings, most notably Euclidean domains and principal ideal rings. In this paper we will consider multivariate polynomial rings over Dedekind domain. By generalizing methods from the theory of finitely generated projective modules, we show that it is possible to describe Gröbner bases over Dedekind domains in a way similar to the case of principal ideal domains, both from a theoretical and a…
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring with non-zero identity, $\fa$ an ideal of $R$, and $X$ an $R$--module. In this paper, for fixed integers $s, t$ and a finite $\fa$--torsion $R$--module $N$, we first study the membership of $\Ext^{s+t}_{R}(N, X)$ and $\Ext^{s}_{R}(N, H^{t}_{\fa}(X))$ in Serre subcategories of the category of $R$--modules. Then we present some conditions which ensure the existence of an isomorphism between them. Finally, we introduce the concept of Serre cofiniteness as a generalization of cofiniteness and study this property for certain local cohomology modules.
We show that Serre's Intersection Multiplicity Conjecture holds for a formal power series ring A over a complete, two-dimensional regular local ring R. From this, we deduce the corresponding result for the local rings of any scheme X which is a smooth extension of a regular, two-dimensional base Y. We also investigate the connection between intersection multiplicity and transversality in the unramified setting via a local analysis on the blowup.
