We present a fine-tuning method to improve the appearance of 3D geometries reconstructed from single images. We leverage advances in monocular depth estimation to obtain disparity maps and present a novel approach to transforming 2D normalized disparity maps into 3D point clouds by using shape priors to solve an optimization on the relevant camera parameters. After creating a 3D point cloud from disparity, we introduce a method to combine the new point cloud with existing information to form a more faithful and detailed final geometry. We demonstrate the efficacy of our approach with multiple experiments on both synthetic and real images.
Monocular depth estimation has been extensively explored based on deep learning, yet its accuracy and generalization ability still lag far behind the stereo-based methods. To tackle this, a few recent studies have proposed to supervise the monocular depth estimation network by distilling disparity maps as proxy ground-truths. However, these studies naively distill the stereo knowledge without considering the comparative advantages of stereo-based and monocular depth estimation methods. In this paper, we propose to selectively distill the disparity maps for more reliable proxy supervision. Spec…

In this paper we present a practical approach for generating an occlusion-free textured 3D map of urban facades by the synergistic use of terrestrial images, 3D point clouds and area-based information. Particularly in dense urban environments, the high presence of urban objects in front of the facades causes significant difficulties for several stages in computational building modeling. Major challenges lie on the one hand in extracting complete 3D facade quadrilateral delimitations and on the other hand in generating occlusion-free facade textures. For these reasons, we describe a straightfor…

Pothole detection is one of the most important tasks for road maintenance. Computer vision approaches are generally based on either 2D road image analysis or 3D road surface modeling. However, these two categories are always used independently. Furthermore, the pothole detection accuracy is still far from satisfactory. Therefore, in this paper, we present a robust pothole detection algorithm that is both accurate and computationally efficient. A dense disparity map is first transformed to better distinguish between damaged and undamaged road areas. To achieve greater disparity transformation e…

Supervised deep networks are among the best methods for finding correspondences in stereo image pairs. Like all supervised approaches, these networks require ground truth data during training. However, collecting large quantities of accurate dense correspondence data is very challenging. We propose that it is unnecessary to have such a high reliance on ground truth depths or even corresponding stereo pairs. Inspired by recent progress in monocular depth estimation, we generate plausible disparity maps from single images. In turn, we use those flawed disparity maps in a carefully designed pipel…

Self-supervised learning for depth estimation possesses several advantages over supervised learning. The benefits of no need for ground-truth depth, online fine-tuning, and better generalization with unlimited data attract researchers to seek self-supervised solutions. In this work, we propose a new self-supervised framework for stereo matching utilizing multiple images captured at aligned camera positions. A cross photometric loss, an uncertainty-aware mutual-supervision loss, and a new smoothness loss are introduced to optimize the network in learning disparity maps end-to-end without ground…

This paper introduces a new method for learning and inferring sparse representations of depth (disparity) maps. The proposed algorithm relaxes the usual assumption of the stationary noise model in sparse coding. This enables learning from data corrupted with spatially varying noise or uncertainty, typically obtained by laser range scanners or structured light depth cameras. Sparse representations are learned from the Middlebury database disparity maps and then exploited in a two-layer graphical model for inferring depth from stereo, by including a sparsity prior on the learned features. Since …

This paper presents a fully automatic framework for extracting editable 3D objects directly from a single photograph. Unlike previous methods which recover either depth maps, point clouds, or mesh surfaces, we aim to recover 3D objects with semantic parts and can be directly edited. We base our work on the assumption that most human-made objects are constituted by parts and these parts can be well represented by generalized primitives. Our work makes an attempt towards recovering two types of primitive-shaped objects, namely, generalized cuboids and generalized cylinders. To this end, we build…

While recent deep monocular depth estimation approaches based on supervised regression have achieved remarkable performance, costly ground truth annotations are required during training. To cope with this issue, in this paper we present a novel unsupervised deep learning approach for predicting depth maps and show that the depth estimation task can be effectively tackled within an adversarial learning framework. Specifically, we propose a deep generative network that learns to predict the correspondence field i.e. the disparity map between two image views in a calibrated stereo camera setting.…

We propose a novel approach to compute high-resolution (2048x1024 and higher) depths for panoramas that is significantly faster and qualitatively and qualitatively more accurate than the current state-of-the-art method (360MonoDepth). As traditional neural network-based methods have limitations in the output image sizes (up to 1024x512) due to GPU memory constraints, both 360MonoDepth and our method rely on stitching multiple perspective disparity or depth images to come out a unified panoramic depth map. However, to achieve globally consistent stitching, 360MonoDepth relied on solving extensi…

Many applications of stereo depth estimation in robotics require the generation of accurate disparity maps in real time under significant computational constraints. Current state-of-the-art algorithms force a choice between either generating accurate mappings at a slow pace, or quickly generating inaccurate ones, and additionally these methods typically require far too many parameters to be usable on power- or memory-constrained devices. Motivated by these shortcomings, we propose a novel approach for disparity prediction in the anytime setting. In contrast to prior work, our end-to-end learne…

At present, supervised stereo methods based on deep neural network have achieved impressive results. However, in some scenarios, accurate three-dimensional labels are inaccessible for supervised training. In this paper, a self-supervised network is proposed for binocular disparity matching (SDMNet), which computes dense disparity maps from stereo image pairs without disparity labels: In the self-supervised training, we match the stereo images densely to approximate the disparity maps and use them to warp the left and right images to estimate the right and left images; we build the loss functio…
Cost aggregation is a key component of stereo matching for high-quality depth estimation. Most methods use multi-scale processing to downsample cost volume for proper context information, but will cause loss of details when upsampling. In this paper, we present a content-aware inter-scale cost aggregation method that adaptively aggregates and upsamples the cost volume from coarse-scale to fine-scale by learning dynamic filter weights according to the content of the left and right views on the two scales. Our method achieves reliable detail recovery when upsampling through the aggregation of in…
Obtaining accurate depth measurements out of a single image represents a fascinating solution to 3D sensing. CNNs led to considerable improvements in this field, and recent trends replaced the need for ground-truth labels with geometry-guided image reconstruction signals enabling unsupervised training. Currently, for this purpose, state-of-the-art techniques rely on images acquired with a binocular stereo rig to predict inverse depth (i.e., disparity) according to the aforementioned supervision principle. However, these methods suffer from well-known problems near occlusions, left image border…
We present an algorithm to estimate fast and accurate depth maps from light fields via a sparse set of depth edges and gradients. Our proposed approach is based around the idea that true depth edges are more sensitive than texture edges to local constraints, and so they can be reliably disambiguated through a bidirectional diffusion process. First, we use epipolar-plane images to estimate sub-pixel disparity at a sparse set of pixels. To find sparse points efficiently, we propose an entropy-based refinement approach to a line estimate from a limited set of oriented filter banks. Next, to estim…

In this work, we propose a learning-based method to denoise and refine disparity maps of a given stereo method. The proposed variational network arises naturally from unrolling the iterates of a proximal gradient method applied to a variational energy defined in a joint disparity, color, and confidence image space. Our method allows to learn a robust collaborative regularizer leveraging the joint statistics of the color image, the confidence map and the disparity map. Due to the variational structure of our method, the individual steps can be easily visualized, thus enabling interpretability o…

In this paper, we have proposed a novel method for stereo disparity estimation by combining the existing methods of block based and region based stereo matching. Our method can generate dense disparity maps from disparity measurements of only 18% pixels of either the left or the right image of a stereo image pair. It works by segmenting the lightness values of image pixels using a fast implementation of K-Means clustering. It then refines those segment boundaries by morphological filtering and connected components analysis, thus removing a lot of redundant boundary pixels. This is followed by …

In this paper, we propose a novel system named Disp R-CNN for 3D object detection from stereo images. Many recent works solve this problem by first recovering a point cloud with disparity estimation and then apply a 3D detector. The disparity map is computed for the entire image, which is costly and fails to leverage category-specific prior. In contrast, we design an instance disparity estimation network (iDispNet) that predicts disparity only for pixels on objects of interest and learns a category-specific shape prior for more accurate disparity estimation. This paper proposes an original problem of \emph{stereo computation from a single mixture image}-- a challenging problem that had not been researched before. The goal is to separate (\ie, unmix) a single mixture image into two constitute image layers, such that the two layers form a left-right stereo image pair, from which a valid disparity map can be recovered. This is a severely illposed problem, from one input image one effectively aims to recover three (\ie, left image, right image and a disparity map). In this work we give a novel deep-learning based solution, by jointly solving the two s…

Although deep learning-based methods have dominated stereo matching leaderboards by yielding unprecedented disparity accuracy, their inference time is typically slow, on the order of seconds for a pair of 540p images. The main reason is that the leading methods employ time-consuming 3D convolutions applied to a 4D feature volume. A common way to speed up the computation is to downsample the feature volume, but this loses high-frequency details. To overcome these challenges, we propose a \emph{displacement-invariant cost computation module} to compute the matching costs without needing a 4D fea…

Deep learning (DL) methods are widely investigated for stereo image matching tasks due to their reported high accuracies. However, their transferability/generalization capabilities are limited by the instances seen in the training data. With satellite images covering large-scale areas with variances in locations, content, land covers, and spatial patterns, we expect their performances to be impacted. Increasing the number and diversity of training data is always an option, but with the ground-truth disparity being limited in remote sensing due to its high cost, it is almost impossible to obtai…
