We present MATrIX - a Modality-Aware Transformer for Information eXtraction in the Visual Document Understanding (VDU) domain. VDU covers information extraction from visually rich documents such as forms, invoices, receipts, tables, graphs, presentations, or advertisements. In these, text semantics and visual information supplement each other to provide a global understanding of the document. MATrIX is pre-trained in an unsupervised way with specifically designed tasks that require the use of multi-modal information (spatial, visual, or textual). We consider the spatial and text modalities all at once in a single token set. To make the attention more flexible, we use a learned modality-aware relative bias in the attention mechanism to modulate the attention between the tokens of different modalities. We evaluate MATrIX on 3 different datasets each with strong baselines.
Improving the resolution of magnetic resonance (MR) image data is critical to computer-aided diagnosis and brain function analysis. Higher resolution helps to capture more detailed content, but typically induces to lower signal-to-noise ratio and longer scanning time. To this end, MR image super-resolution has become a widely-interested topic in recent times. Existing works establish extensive deep models with the conventional architectures based on convolutional neural networks (CNN). In this work, to further advance this research field, we make an early effort to build a Transformer-based MR…
Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are good at extracting contexture features within certain receptive fields, while transformers can model the global long-range dependency features. By absorbing the advantage of transformer and the merit of CNN, Swin Transformer shows strong feature representation ability. Based on it, we propose a cross-modality fusion model SwinNet for RGB-D and RGB-T salient object detection. It is driven by Swin Transformer to extract the hierarchical features, boosted by attention mechanism to bridge the gap between two modalities, and guided by edge information to sha…
Aggregating multi-modality data to obtain reliable data representation attracts more and more attention. Recent studies demonstrate that Transformer models usually work well for multi-modality tasks. Existing Transformers generally either adopt the Cross-Attention (CA) mechanism or simple concatenation to achieve the information interaction among different modalities which generally ignore the issue of modality gap. In this work, we re-think Transformer and extend it to MutualFormer for multi-modality data representation. Rather than CA in Transformer, MutualFormer employs our new design of Cr…

Key information extraction from document images is of paramount importance in office automation. Conventional template matching based approaches fail to generalize well to document images of unseen templates, and are not robust against text recognition errors. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end Spatial Dual-Modality Graph Reasoning method (SDMG-R) to extract key information from unstructured document images. We model document images as dual-modality graphs, nodes of which encode both the visual and textual features of detected text regions, and edges of which represent the spatial relatio…

Multimodal data collected from the real world are often imperfect due to missing modalities. Therefore multimodal models that are robust against modal-incomplete data are highly preferred. Recently, Transformer models have shown great success in processing multimodal data. However, existing work has been limited to either architecture designs or pre-training strategies; whether Transformer models are naturally robust against missing-modal data has rarely been investigated. In this paper, we present the first-of-its-kind work to comprehensively investigate the behavior of Transformers in the pr…
Salient Object Detection is the task of predicting the human attended region in a given scene. Fusing depth information has been proven effective in this task. The main challenge of this problem is how to aggregate the complementary information from RGB modality and depth modality. However, conventional deep models heavily rely on CNN feature extractors, and the long-range contextual dependencies are usually ignored. In this work, we propose Dual Swin-Transformer based Mutual Interactive Network. We adopt Swin-Transformer as the feature extractor for both RGB and depth modality to model the lo…

Multispectral image pairs can provide the combined information, making object detection applications more reliable and robust in the open world. To fully exploit the different modalities, we present a simple yet effective cross-modality feature fusion approach, named Cross-Modality Fusion Transformer (CFT) in this paper. Unlike prior CNNs-based works, guided by the transformer scheme, our network learns long-range dependencies and integrates global contextual information in the feature extraction stage. More importantly, by leveraging the self attention of the transformer, the network can natu…

In this work, we present a unified framework for multi-modality 3D object detection, named UVTR. The proposed method aims to unify multi-modality representations in the voxel space for accurate and robust single- or cross-modality 3D detection. To this end, the modality-specific space is first designed to represent different inputs in the voxel feature space. Different from previous work, our approach preserves the voxel space without height compression to alleviate semantic ambiguity and enable spatial connections. To make full use of the inputs from different sensors, the cross-modality inte…

Vision-Language Pre-training (VLP) aims to learn multi-modal representations from image-text pairs and serves for downstream vision-language tasks in a fine-tuning fashion. The dominant VLP models adopt a CNN-Transformer architecture, which embeds images with a CNN, and then aligns images and text with a Transformer. Visual relationship between visual contents plays an important role in image understanding and is the basic for inter-modal alignment learning. However, CNNs have limitations in visual relation learning due to local receptive field's weakness in modeling long-range dependencies. T…

Multi-modal MR imaging is routinely used in clinical practice to diagnose and investigate brain tumors by providing rich complementary information. Previous multi-modal MRI segmentation methods usually perform modal fusion by concatenating multi-modal MRIs at an early/middle stage of the network, which hardly explores non-linear dependencies between modalities. In this work, we propose a novel Nested Modality-Aware Transformer (NestedFormer) to explicitly explore the intra-modality and inter-modality relationships of multi-modal MRIs for brain tumor segmentation. Built on the transformer-based…

As an important carrier of human productive activities, the extraction of buildings is not only essential for urban dynamic monitoring but also necessary for suburban construction inspection. Nowadays, accurate building extraction from remote sensing images remains a challenge due to the complex background and diverse appearances of buildings. The convolutional neural network (CNN) based building extraction methods, although increased the accuracy significantly, are criticized for their inability for modelling global dependencies. Thus, this paper applies the Vision Transformer for building ex…

Fingerprint feature extraction is a task that is solved using either a global or a local representation. State-of-the-art global approaches use heavy deep learning models to process the full fingerprint image at once, which makes the corresponding approach memory intensive. On the other hand, local approaches involve minutiae based patch extraction, multiple feature extraction steps and an expensive matching stage, which make the corresponding approach time intensive. However, both these approaches provide useful and sometimes exclusive insights for solving the problem. Using both approaches t…

Transfer learning is widely used in computer vision (CV), natural language processing (NLP) and achieves great success. Most transfer learning systems are based on the same modality (e.g. RGB image in CV and text in NLP). However, the cross-modality transfer learning (CMTL) systems are scarce. In this work, we study CMTL from 2D to 3D sensor to explore the upper bound performance of 3D sensor only systems, which play critical roles in robotic navigation and perform well in low light scenarios. While most CMTL pipelines from 2D to 3D vision are complicated and based on Convolutional Neural Netw…

The recent success of Transformers in the language domain has motivated adapting it to a multimodal setting, where a new visual model is trained in tandem with an already pretrained language model. However, due to the excessive memory requirements from Transformers, existing work typically fixes the language model and train only the vision module, which limits its ability to learn cross-modal information in an end-to-end manner. In this work, we focus on reducing the parameters of multimodal Transformers in the context of audio-visual video representation learning. We alleviate the high memory…

Accelerated multi-modal magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is a new and effective solution for fast MR imaging, providing superior performance in restoring the target modality from its undersampled counterpart with guidance from an auxiliary modality. However, existing works simply combine the auxiliary modality as prior information, lacking in-depth investigations on the potential mechanisms for fusing different modalities. Further, they usually rely on the convolutional neural networks (CNNs), which is limited by the intrinsic locality in capturing the long-distance dependency. To this end, we …

Recently, vision transformer (ViT) based multimodal learning methods have been proposed to improve the robustness of face anti-spoofing (FAS) systems. However, there are still no works to explore the fundamental natures (\textit{e.g.}, modality-aware inputs, suitable multimodal pre-training, and efficient finetuning) in vanilla ViT for multimodal FAS. In this paper, we investigate three key factors (i.e., inputs, pre-training, and finetuning) in ViT for multimodal FAS with RGB, Infrared (IR), and Depth. First, in terms of the ViT inputs, we find that leveraging local feature descriptors benefi…

Visible-Infrared Person Re-Identification (VI-ReID) is a challenging retrieval task under complex modality changes. Existing methods usually focus on extracting discriminative visual features while ignoring the reliability and commonality of visual features between different modalities. In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning framework named Progressive Modality-shared Transformer (PMT) for effective VI-ReID. To reduce the negative effect of modality gaps, we first take the gray-scale images as an auxiliary modality and propose a progressive learning strategy. Then, we propose a Modali…
Vision-and-language reasoning requires an understanding of visual concepts, language semantics, and, most importantly, the alignment and relationships between these two modalities. We thus propose the LXMERT (Learning Cross-Modality Encoder Representations from Transformers) framework to learn these vision-and-language connections. In LXMERT, we build a large-scale Transformer model that consists of three encoders: an object relationship encoder, a language encoder, and a cross-modality encoder. Next, to endow our model with the capability of connecting vision and language semantics, we pre-tr…

Brain tumor segmentation (BTS) in magnetic resonance image (MRI) is crucial for brain tumor diagnosis, cancer management and research purposes. With the great success of the ten-year BraTS challenges as well as the advances of CNN and Transformer algorithms, a lot of outstanding BTS models have been proposed to tackle the difficulties of BTS in different technical aspects. However, existing studies hardly consider how to fuse the multi-modality images in a reasonable manner. In this paper, we leverage the clinical knowledge of how radiologists diagnose brain tumors from multiple MRI modalities…
Lack of audio-video synchronization is a common problem during television broadcasts and video conferencing, leading to an unsatisfactory viewing experience. A widely accepted paradigm is to create an error detection mechanism that identifies the cases when audio is leading or lagging. We propose ModEFormer, which independently extracts audio and video embeddings using modality-specific transformers. Different from the other transformer-based approaches, ModEFormer preserves the modality of the input streams which allows us to use a larger batch size with more negative audio samples for contra…

Spatial and temporal stream model has gained great success in video action recognition. Most existing works pay more attention to designing effective features fusion methods, which train the two-stream model in a separate way. However, it's hard to ensure discriminability and explore complementary information between different streams in existing works. In this work, we propose a novel cooperative cross-stream network that investigates the conjoint information in multiple different modalities. The jointly spatial and temporal stream networks feature extraction is accomplished by an end-to-end …

We present PolyBuilding, a fully end-to-end polygon Transformer for building extraction. PolyBuilding direct predicts vector representation of buildings from remote sensing images. It builds upon an encoder-decoder transformer architecture and simultaneously outputs building bounding boxes and polygons. Given a set of polygon queries, the model learns the relations among them and encodes context information from the image to predict the final set of building polygons with fixed vertex numbers. Corner classification is performed to distinguish the building corners from the sampled points, which…
