In this paper, the fast consensus problem of high-order multi-agent systems under undirected topologies is considered. The direct link between the consensus convergence rate and the control gains is established. An accelerated consensus algorithm based on gradient descent is proposed to optimize the convergence rate. By applying the Routh-Hurwitz stability criterion, the lower bound on the convergence rate is derived, and explicit control gains are derived as the necessary condition to achieve the optimal convergence rate. Moreover, a protocol with time-varying control gains is designed to achieve the finite-time consensus. Explicit formulas for the time-varying control gains and the final consensus state are given. Numerical examples and simulation results are presented to illustrate the obtained theoretical results.
In this paper, we consider an output consensus problem for a general class of nonlinear multi-agent systems without a prior knowledge of the agents' control directions. Two distributed Nussbaumtype control laws are proposed to solve the leaderless and leader-following adaptive consensus for heterogeneous multiple agents. Examples and simulations are given to verify their effectiveness
This paper investigates the consensus problem of general linear multi-agent systems under the framework of optimization. A novel distributed receding horizon control (RHC) strategy for consensus is proposed. We show that the consensus protocol generated by the unconstrained distributed RHC can be expressed in an explicit form. Based on the resulting consensus protocol the necessary and sufficient conditions for ensuring consensus are developed. Furthermore, we specify more detailed consensus conditions for multi-agent system with general and one-dimensional linear dynamics depending on the dif…
This paper investigates the impact of bounded actuation on the connectivity-preserving consensus of two classes of multi-agent systems, with kinematic agents and with Euler- Lagrange agents. The investigation establishes that: (1) there exists a class of gradient-based controls which drive kinematic multi-agent systems to connectivity-preserving consensus even if they saturate; (2) actuator saturation restricts the initial states from which Euler-Lagrange multi-agent systems can be synchronized while preserving their local connectivity; (3) Euler-Lagrange multi-agent systems with unbounded act…
This paper considers the consensusability of multi-agent systems with delay and packet dropout. By proposing a kind of predictor-like protocol, sufficient and necessary conditions are given for the mean-square consensusability in terms of system matrices, time delay, communication graph and the packetdrop probability. Moreover, sufficient and necessary conditions are also obtained for the formationability of multi-agent systems.
We consider the distributed leader-follower consensus problem with event-triggered communications. The system under consideration is a non-linear input-affine multi agent system. The agents are assumed to have identical dynamics structure with uncertain parameters and satisfying an incremental stabilisability condition. A distributed control law is proposed which achieves consensus based on two novel Communication Triggering Conditions (CTCs): the first one to achieve an asymptotic consensus but without any guarantees on Zeno behaviour and the second one to exclude Zeno behaviour but with prac…
In this paper, we consider a robust consensus tracking problem of heterogeneous multi-agent systems with time-varying interconnection topologies. Based on common Lyapunov function and internal model techniques, both state and output feedback control laws are derived to solve this problem. The proposed design is robust by admitting some parameter uncertainties in the multi-agent system.
This paper addresses the problem of positive consensus of directed multi-agent systems with observer-type output-feedback protocols. More specifically, directed graph is used to model the communication topology of the multi-agent system and linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) are used in the consensus analysis in this paper. Using positive systems theory and graph theory, a convex programming algorithm is developed to design appropriate protocols such that the multi-agent system is able to reach consensus with its state trajectory always remaining in the non-negative orthant. Finally, numerical …
In this paper, the consensus problems of the continuous-time integrator systems under noisy measurements are considered. The measurement noises, which appear when agents measure their neighbors' states, are modeled to be multiplicative. By multiplication of the noises, here, the noise intensities are proportional to the absolute value of the relative states of agent and its neighbor. By using known distributed protocols for integrator agent systems, the closed-loop {system is} described in the vector form by a singular stochastic differential equation. For the fixed and switching network topol…
We study the state consensus problem for linear shift-invariant discrete-time homogeneous multi-agent systems (MASs) over time-varying graphs. A novel approach based on the small gain theorem is proposed to design the consensus control protocols for both neutrally stable and neutrally unstable MASs, assuming the uniformly connected graphs. It is shown that the state consensus can be achieved for neutrally stable MASs under a weak uniform observability condition; for neutrally unstable MASs, the state consensus entails a strong uniform observability condition. Two numerical examples are worked …
This paper investigates a new method for consensus in a group of nonlinear complex multi-agent systems using fixed-order non-fragile dynamic output feedback controller, via an LMI approach. The proposed scheme is decentralized in the sense that each agent relies on the relative output information among the adjacent agents. The consensus based controllers are designed to minimize the effects of nonlinear terms of the agents as well as external disturbances. Converting consensus problem to stabilization of an equivalent augmented system using proper transformations, Lyapunov stability theorem is…
An event-triggered control technique for consensus of multi-agent systems with general linear dynamics is presented. This paper extends previous work to consider agents that are connected using directed graphs. Additionally, the approach shown here provides asymptotic consensus with guaranteed positive inter-event time intervals. This event-triggered control method is also used in the case where communication delays are present. For the communication delay case we also show that the agents achieve consensus asymptotically and that, for every agent, the time intervals between consecutive transm…

This paper fully studies distributed optimal consensus problem in non-directed dynamical networks. We consider a group of networked agents that are supposed to rendezvous at the optimal point of a collective convex objective function. Each agent has no knowledge about the global objective function and only has access to its own local objective function, which is a portion of the global one, and states information of agents within its neighborhood set. In this setup, all agents coordinate with their neighbors to seek the consensus point that minimizes the networks global objective function. In …
We consider the global consensus problem for multi-agent systems with input saturation over digraphs. Under a mild connectivity condition that the underlying digraph has a directed spanning tree, we use Lyapunov methods to show that the widely used distributed consensus protocol, which solves the consensus problem for the case without input saturation constraints, also solves the global consensus problem for the case with input saturation constraints. In order to reduce the overall need of communication and system updates, we then propose a distributed event-triggered control law. Global conse…
This paper utilizes the agent's memory in accelerated consensus for second-order multi-agent systems (MASs). In the case of one-tap memory, explicit formulas for the optimal consensus convergence rate and control parameters are derived by applying the Jury stability criterion. It is proved that the optimal consensus convergence rate with one-tap memory is faster than that without memory. In the case of M-tap memory, an iterative algorithm is given to derive the control parameters to accelerate the convergence rate. Moreover, the accelerated consensus with one-tap memory is extended to the form…
The leader-following consensus of multiple linear time invariant (LTI) systems under switching topology is considered. The leader-following consensus problem consists of designing for each agent a distributed protocol to make all agents track a leader vehicle, which has the same LTI dynamics as the agents. The interaction topology describing the information exchange of these agents is time-varying. An averaging method is proposed. Unlike the existing results in the literatures which assume the LTI agents to be neutrally stable, we relax this condition, only making assumption that the LTI agent…
In this technical note, we investigate an optimal output consensus problem for heterogeneous uncertain nonlinear multi-agent systems. The considered agents are described by high-order nonlinear dynamics subject to both static and dynamic uncertainties. A two-step design, comprising sequential constructions of optimal signal generator and distributed partial stabilization feedback controller, is developed to overcome the difficulties brought by nonlinearities, uncertainties, and optimal requirements. Our study can not only assure an output consensus, but also achieve an optimal agreement charac…
The consensus control with optimal cost remains major challenging although consensus control problems have been well studied in recent years. In this paper, we study the consensus control of multi-agent system associated with a given cost function. The main contribution is to present the distributed control protocol while minimizing the given cost function with positive semi-definite weighting matrix of control. The derived controller is composed of two parts: One part is the feedback of the individual state which minimizes the cost function and the other part is the feedback of the relative s…
In this chapter we look at one of the canonical driving examples for multi-agent systems: average consensus. In this scenario, a group of agents seek to agree on the average of their initial states. Depending on the particular application, such states might correspond to sensor measurements, estimates about the position of a target, or some other data that needs to be fused. Due to its numerous applications in networked systems, many algorithmic solutions exist to the multi-agent average consensus problem; however, a majority of them rely on agents having continuous or periodic availability of…
The present paper is devoted to the study of average consensus problems for undirected networks of dynamic agents having communication delays. The accent is put here on the study of the time-delays influence: both constant and time-varying delays are considered, as well as uniform and non uniform repartitions of the delays in the network. The main results provide sufficient conditions (also necessary in most cases) for existence of average consensus under bounded, but otherwise unknown, communication delays. Simulations are provided that show adequation with these results.
We extend a multi-agent convex-optimization algorithm named Newton-Raphson consensus to a network scenario that involves directed, asynchronous and lossy communications. We theoretically analyze the stability and performance of the algorithm and, in particular, provide sufficient conditions that guarantee local exponential convergence of the node-states to the global centralized minimizer even in presence of packet losses. Finally, we complement the theoretical analysis with numerical simulations that compare the performance of the Newton-Raphson consensus against asynchronous implementations …
This paper studies consensus problems for multi-agent systems defined on directed graphs where the consensus dynamics involves nonlinear and discontinuous functions. Sufficient conditions, involving the nonlinear functions and the topology of the underlying graph, for the agents to converge to consensus are provided. For a special case, namely the multi-agent system defined on a strongly connected graph with continuous functions, we show the convergence by using a port-Hamiltonian formulation.
This paper considers the distributed consensus problem of linear multi-agent systems subject to different matching uncertainties for both the cases without and with a leader of bounded unknown control input. Due to the existence of nonidentical uncertainties, the multi-agent systems discussed in this paper are essentially heterogeneous. For the case where the communication graph is undirected and connected, a distributed continuous static consensus protocol based on the relative state information is first designed, under which the consensus error is uniformly ultimately bounded and exponential…
Two finite-time consensus protocols are proposed for multi-dimensional multi-agent systems, using direction-preserving and component-wise signum controls respectively. Filippov solutions and non-smooth analysis techniques are adopted to handle discontinuities. Sufficient and necessary conditions are provided to guarantee finite-time convergence and boundedness of the solutions. It turns out that the number of agents which have continuous control law plays an essential role for finite-time convergence. In addition it is shown that the unit balls introduced by $\ell_p$ and $\ell_{\infty}$ norms …

We provide a comprehensive account of the motivations behind the use of event-triggered strategies for consensus, the methods for algorithm synthesis, the technical challenges involved in establishing desirable properties of the resulting implementations, and their applications in distributed control. We pay special attention to the assumptions on the capabilities of the network agents and the resulting features of the algorithm execution, including the interconnection topology, the evaluat…
This paper presents the formulation and analysis of a fully distributed dynamic event-triggered communication based robust dynamic average consensus algorithm. Dynamic average consensus problem involves a networked set of agents estimating the time-varying average of dynamic reference signals locally available to individual agents. We propose an asymptotically stable solution to the dynamic average consensus problem that is robust to network disruptions. Since this robust algorithm requires continuous communication among agents, we introduce a novel dynamic event-triggered communication scheme…
This paper investigates the distributed optimal output consensus problem of heterogeneous linear multi-agent systems over weight-unbalanced directed networks. A novel distributed continuous-time state feedback controller is proposed to steer the outputs of all the agents to converge to the optimal solution of the global cost function. Under the standard condition that the unbalanced digraph is strongly connected and the local cost functions are strongly convex with global Lipschitz gradients, the exponential convergence of the closed-loop multi-agent system is established. Then, the proposed s…
It is desirable but challenging to fulfill system constraints and reach optimal performance in consensus protocol design for practical multi-agent systems (MASs). This paper investigates the optimal consensus problem for general linear MASs subject to control input constraints. Two classes of MASs including subsystems with semi-stable and unstable dynamics are considered. For both classes of MASs without input constraints, the results on designing optimal consensus protocols are first developed by inverse optimality approach. Utilizing the optimal consensus protocols, the receding horizon cont…
This paper studies an optimal consensus problem for a group of heterogeneous high-order agents with unknown control directions. Compared with existing consensus results, the consensus point is further required to an optimal solution to some distributed optimization problem. To solve this problem, we first augment each agent with an optimal signal generator to reproduce the global optimal point of the given distributed optimization problem, and then complete the global optimal consensus design by developing some adaptive tracking controllers for these augmented agents. Moreover, we present an e…
The purpose of this short paper is to provide a theoretical analysis for the consensus problem under nonlinear protocols. A main contribution of this work is to generalize the previous consensus problems under nonlinear protocols for networks with undirected graphs to directed graphs (information flow). Our theoretical result is that if the directed graph is strongly connected and the nonlinear protocol is strictly increasing, then consensus can be realized. Some simple examples are also provided to demonstrate the validity of our theoretical result.
This paper is concerned with the consensus problem for multi-agent systems subject to communication delays between the neighboring agents. We consider a scenario where each agent is characterized by a general high-order linear system and the communication delays between the agents are non-uniform and time-varying. We design a distributed control protocol for the agents and provide an equivalent stability problem to be solved that guarantees the state consensus in the group of agents. Moreover, a delay-dependent stability criterion is provided by combining the Lyapunov-Krasovskii method with th…
This paper studies the consensus problem of multi-agent systems with asymmetric and reducible topologies. Centralized event-triggered rules are provided so as to reduce the frequency of system's updating. The diffusion coupling feedbacks of each agent are based on the latest observations from its in-neighbors and the system's next observation time is triggered by a criterion based on all agents' information. The scenario of continuous monitoring is first considered, namely all agents' instantaneous states can be observed. It is proved that if the network topology has a spanning tree, then the …
This paper is concerned with the leader-following consensus problem for a class of Lipschitz nonlinear multi-agent systems with uncertain dynamics, where each agent only transmits its noisy output, at discrete instants and independently from its neighbors. The proposed consensus protocol is based on a continuous-discrete time observer, which provides a continuous time estimation of the state of the neighbors from their discrete-time output measurements, together with a continuous control law. The stability of the multi-agent system is analyzed with a Lyapunov approach and the exponential pract…
This paper focuses on the problem of distributed consensus control of multi-agent systems while considering two main practical concerns (i) stochastic noise in the agent dynamics and (ii) predefined performance constraints over evolutions of multi-agent systems. In particular, we consider that each agent is driven by a stochastic differential equation with state-dependent noise which makes the considered problem more challenging compared to non-stochastic agents. The work provides sufficient conditions under which the proposed timevarying distributed control laws ensure consensus in expectatio…
In this paper, we study consensus problem in multi-agent system with directed topology by event-triggered feedback control. That is, at each agent, the diffusion coupling feedbacks are based on the information from its latest observations to its in-neighbours. We derive distributed criteria to determine the next observation time of each agent that are triggered by its in-neighbours' information and its own states respectively. We prove that if the network topology is irreducible, then under the event-triggered coupling principles, the multi-agent system reach consensus. Then, we extend these r…
In this paper, we study finite-time state consensus problems for continuous nonlinear multi-agent systems. Building on the theory of finite-time Lyapunov stability, we propose sufficient criteria which guarantee the system to reach a consensus in finite time, provided that the underlying directed network contains a spanning tree. Novel finite-time consensus protocols are introduced as examples for applying the criteria. Simulations are also presented to illustrate our theoretical results.
In this paper, we provide a theoretical analysis for nonlinear discontinuous consensus protocols in networks of multiagents over weighted directed graphs. By integrating the analytic tools from nonsmooth stability analysis and graph theory, we investigate networks with both fixed topology and randomly switching topology. For networks with a fixed topology, we provide a sufficient and necessary condition for asymptotic consensus, and the consensus value can be explicitly calculated. As to networks with switching topologies, we provide a sufficient condition for the network to realize consensus …
This paper proposes matrix-scaled consensus algorithm, which generalizes the scaled consensus algorithm in \cite{Roy2015scaled}. In (scalar) scaled consensus algorithms, the agents' states do not converge to a common value, but to different points along a straight line in the state space, which depends on the scaling factors and the initial states of the agents. In the matrix-scaled consensus algorithm, a positive/negative definite matrix weight is assigned to each agent. Each agent updates its state based on the product of the sum of relative matrix scaled states and the sign of the matrix we…
The distributed optimal output consensus problem for high-order multi-agent systems has been studied recently. In this paper, we further focus on the same problem for high-order multi-agent systems subject to parametric uncertainties and aim at distributed robust controllers by measurement output feedback. We first develop a dynamic compensator to estimate the expected optimal consensus point and convert the problem into several decentralized robust tracking problems. Then, by combining the integral control technique and dirty derivative observer technique, we constructively propose a distribu…
This paper addresses the distributed prescribed-time leader-following consensus problem for a class of high-order multi-agent systems (MASs) with perturbed nonlinear agents dynamics and where the topology of the network contains a directed spanning tree, with the leader as the root. Prescribed-time consensus means that an agreement state of the MAS is achieved in a preset time, introduced as a parameter of the control law, and this constant settling time is achieved independently of the agents' initial state. The proposed control method exhibits three main advantages: first, to our best knowle…

In this note, the problem of simultaneous leader-following consensus and parameter estimation is studied for a class of multi-agent systems subject to an uncertain leader system. The leader system is described by a sum of sinusoids with unknown amplitudes, frequencies and phases. A distributed adaptive observer is established for each agent to estimate the unknown frequencies of the leader. It is shown that if the signal of the leader is sufficiently rich, the estimation errors of the unknown frequencies converge to zero asymptotically for all the agents. Based on the designed distributed adap…

This note corrects a pretty serious mistake and some inaccuracies in "Consensus and cooperation in networked multi-agent systems" by R. Olfati-Saber, J.A. Fax, and R.M. Murray, published in Vol. 95 of the Proceedings of the IEEE (2007, No. 1, P. 215-233). It also mentions several stronger results applicable to the class of problems under consideration and addresses the issue of priority whose interpretation in the above-mentioned paper is not exact.
