This paper is concerned with the consensus problem for multi-agent systems subject to communication delays between the neighboring agents. We consider a scenario where each agent is characterized by a general high-order linear system and the communication delays between the agents are non-uniform and time-varying. We design a distributed control protocol for the agents and provide an equivalent stability problem to be solved that guarantees the state consensus in the group of agents. Moreover, a delay-dependent stability criterion is provided by combining the Lyapunov-Krasovskii method with the linear matrix inequality approach.
In this paper, robust finite-time consensus of a group of nonlinear multi-agent systems in the presence of communication time delays is considered. In particular, appropriate delay-dependent strategies which are less conservative are suggested. Sufficient conditions for finite-time consensus in the presence of deterministic and stochastic disturbances are presented. The communication delays don't need to be time invariant, uniform, symmetric, or even known. The only required condition is that all delays satisfy a known upper bound. The consensus algorithm is appropriate for agents with partial…
Consensus of autonomous agents is a benchmark problem in cooperative control. In this paper, we consider standard continuous-time averaging consensus policies (or Laplacian flows) over time-varying graphs and focus on robustness of consensus against communication delays. Such a robustness has been proved under the assumption of uniform quasi-strong connectivity of the graph. It is known, however, that the uniform connectivity is not necessary for consensus. For instance, in the case of undirected graph and undelayed communication consensus requires a much weaker condition of integral connectiv…
This paper studies the consensus problem of general linear discrete-time multi-agent systems (MAS) with input constraints and bounded time-varying communication delays. We propose a robust distributed model predictive control (DMPC) consensus protocol that integrates the offline consensus design with online DMPC optimization to exploit their respective advantages. More precisely, each agent is equipped with an offline consensus protocol, which is a priori designed, depending on its immediate neighbors' estimated states. Further, the estimation errors propagated over time due to inexact neighbo…

Solving an output consensus problem in multi-agent systems is often hindered by multiple time-variant delays. To address such fundamental problems over time, we present a new optimal time-variant distributed control for linearly perturbed multi-agent systems by involving an integral sliding mode controller and a linear consensus scheme with constant wights under directed topology. Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals along with linear matrix inequalities are jointly employed to demonstrate the associated closed-loop stability and convergence features. Maximum delays for the communicating networks a…
Latency is inherent in almost all real-world networked applications. In this paper, we propose a distributed allocation strategy over multi-agent networks with delayed communications. The state of each agent (or node) represents its share of assigned resources out of a fixed amount (equal to overall demand). Every node locally updates its state toward optimizing a global allocation cost function via received information of its neighbouring nodes even when the data exchange over the network is heterogeneously delayed at different links. The update is based on the alternating direction method of…
Consensus of autonomous agents is a benchmark problem in multi-agent control. In this paper, we consider continuous-time averaging consensus policies (or Laplacian flows) and their discrete-time counterparts over time-varying graphs in presence of unknown but bounded communication delays. It is known that consensus is established (no matter how large the delays are) if the graph is periodically, or uniformly quasi-strongly connected (UQSC). The UQSC condition is often believed to be the weakest sufficient condition under which consensus can be proved. We show that the UQSC condition can actual…

This paper models a class of hierarchical cyber-physical systems and studies its associated consensus problem. The model has a pyramid structure, which reflects many realistic natural or human systems. By analyzing the spectrum of the coupling matrix, it is shown that all nodes in the physical layer can reach a consensus based on the proposed distributed protocols without interlayer delays. Then, the result is extended to the case with interlayer delays. A necessary and sufficient condition for consensus-seeking is derived from the frequency domain perspective, which describes a permissible ra…
This paper investigates the distributed consensus tracking control problem for general linear multi-agent systems (MASs) with external disturbances and heterogeneous time-varying input and communication delays under a directed communication graph topology, containing a spanning tree. First, for all agents whose state matrix has no eigenvalues with positive real parts, a communication-delay-related observer, which is used to construct the controller, is designed for followers to estimate the leader's state information. Second, by means of the output regulation theory, the results are relaxed to…
This article presents the consensus of a saturated second order multi-agent system with non-switching dynamics that can be represented by a directed graph. The system is affected by data processing (input delay) and communication time-delays that are assumed to be asynchronous. The agents have saturation nonlinearities, each of them is approximated into separate linear and nonlinear elements. Nonlinear elements are represented by describing functions. Describing functions and stability of linear elements are used to estimate the existence of limit cycles in the system with multiple control law…
Classical distributed estimation scenarios typically assume timely and reliable exchanges of information over the sensor network. This paper, in contrast, considers single time-scale distributed estimation via a sensor network subject to transmission time-delays. The proposed discrete-time networked estimator consists of two steps: (i) consensus on (delayed) a-priori estimates, and (ii) measurement update. The sensors only share their a-priori estimates with their out-neighbors over (possibly) time-delayed transmission links. The delays are assumed to be fixed over time, heterogeneous, and kno…

We propose a distributed (single) target tracking scheme based on networked estimation and consensus algorithms over static sensor networks. The tracking part is based on linear time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) measurement proposed in our previous works. This paper, in particular, develops delay-tolerant distributed filtering solutions over sparse data-transmission networks. We assume general arbitrary heterogeneous delays at different links. This may occur in many realistic large-scale applications where the data-sharing between different nodes is subject to latency due to communication-reso…

This paper discusses distributed optimization over a directed graph. We begin with some well known algorithms which achieve consensus among agents including FROST [1], which possesses the quickest convergence to the optimum. It is a well known fact FROST has a linear convergence. However FROST works only over fixed topology of underlying network. Moreover the updates proposed therein require perfectly synchronized communication among nodes. Hence communication delays among nodes, which are inevitable in a realistic scenario, preclude the possibility of implementing FROST in real time. In this …
The emergence of the connected and automated vehicle (CAV) technology enables numerous advanced applications in our transportation system, benefiting our daily travels in terms of safety, mobility, and sustainability. However, vehicular communication technologies such as Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC) or Cellular-Based Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) communications unavoidably introduce issues like communication delay and packet loss, which will downgrade the performances of any CAV applications. In this study, we propose a consensus-based motion estimation methodology to estimate t…
In this paper, we study delayed regulated state/output synchronization for discrete-time homogeneous and heterogeneous networks of multi-agent systems (MAS) subject to unknown, non-uniform and arbitrarily large communication delays. A delay transformation is utilized to transform the original MAS to a new system without delayed states. The proposed scale-free dynamic protocols are developed solely based on agent models and localized information exchange with neighbors such that we do not need any information about the communication networks and the number of agents.
Using any nonnegative function with a nonpositive derivative along trajectories to define a virtual output, the classic LaSalle invariance principle can be extended to switched nonlinear time-varying (NLTV) systems, by considering the weak observability (WO) associated with this output. WO is what the output informs about the limiting behavior of state trajectories (hidden in the zero locus of the output). In the context of switched NLTV systems, WO can be explored using the recently established framework of limiting zeroing-output solutions. Adding to this, an extension of the integral invari…
This paper presents a new method for dynamic output feedback stabilizing controller design for decomposable systems with switching topology and delay. Our approach consists of two steps. In the first step, we model the decomposable systems with switching topology as equivalent LPV systems with a piecewise constant parameter. In the second step, we design stabilizing output feedbacks for these LPV systems in the presence of a time-varying output delay using a trajectory-based stability analysis approach. We do not impose any constraint on the delay derivative. Finally, we illustrate our approac…
Average consensus theory is intensely popular for building time synchronization in wireless sensor network (WSN). However, the average consensus-based time synchronization algorithm is based on iteration that pose challenges for efficiency, as they entail high communication cost and long convergence time in large-scale WSN. Based on the suggestion that the greater the algebraic connectivity leads to the faster the convergence, a novel multi-hop average consensus time synchronization (MACTS) is developed with innovative implementation in this paper. By employing multi-hop communication model, i…
In this paper, we study the problem of resilient consensus for a multi-agent network where some of the nodes might be adversarial, attempting to prevent consensus by transmitting faulty values. Our approach is based on that of the so-called weighted mean subsequence reduced (W-MSR) algorithm with a special emphasis on its use in agents capable to communicate with multi-hop neighbors. The MSR algorithm is a powerful tool for achieving resilient consensus under minimal requirements for network structures, characterized by the class of robust graphs. Our analysis highlights that through multi-hop…
