Local solutions are a vivid and long-living topic in gravitational physics. We consider exact static pseudo-spherically symmetric solutions of semi-classical Einstein's equations in presence of the trace anomaly contribution. We investigate black hole solutions and propose new metrics describing traversable wormholes. Thanks to the trace anomaly, wormholes are realized in the vacuum and, nevertheless, violate the null energy condition.
A systematic approach is developed in order to obtain spherically symmetric midisuperspace models that accept holonomy modifications in the presence of matter fields with local degrees of freedom. In particular, starting from the most general Hamiltonian quadratic in radial derivatives of the variables, we obtain a family of effective modified constraints that satisfy Dirac's deformation algebra, which encodes the covariance of general relativity, and show that (scale-dependent) holonomy corrections can be consistently implemented. In vacuum, the deformed anomaly-free Hamiltonian is explicitly…
Recently it was shown that the quantum vacuum effects of massless chiral fermion field in curved space-time leads to the parity-violating Pontryagin density term, which appears in the trace anomaly with imaginary coefficient. In the present work the anomaly-induced effective action with the parity-violating term is derived. The result is similar to the Chern-Simons modified general relativity, which was extensively studied in the last decade, but with the kinetic terms for the scalar different from those considered previously in the literature. The parity-breaking term makes no effect on the z…
The trace anomaly in six-dimensional space is given by the local terms which have six derivatives of the metric. We find the effective action which is responsible for the anomaly. The result is presented in non-local covariant form and also in the local covariant form which employs two auxiliary scalar fields.
Paying attention to conformal invariance as the invariance under local transformations of units of measure, we take a conformal invariant quantum field as a quantum matter theory in which one has the freedom to choose the values of units of mass, length and time arbitrarily at each point. To be able to have this view, it is necessary that the background on which the quantum field is based be conformal invariant as well. Consequently, defining the unambiguous expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor of such a quantum field through the Wald renormalizing prescription necessitates breaking…
The trace anomaly and the cosmological constant problem are two typical breakdowns when applying the quantum principle to a general covariant or gravitational system. A quantum theory of spacetime reference frame is proposed and reviewed. We study the theory by functional method, and show that the trace anomaly of the theory is closely related to some of the Perelman's functionals. The functionals may provide us possible links between the trace anomaly and the cosmological constant. We find that to cancel the trace anomaly at the lab's scale up to very high energy, a cosmological constant is r…
We calculate the trace (conformal) anomaly for chiral fermions in a general curved background using Hadamard subtraction. While in intermediate steps of the calculation imaginary terms proportional to the Pontryagin density appear, imposing a vanishing divergence of the stress tensor these terms completely cancel, and we recover the well-known result equal to half the trace anomaly of a Dirac fermion. We elaborate in detail on the advantages of the Hadamard method for the general definition of composite operators in general curved spacetimes, and speculate on possible causes for the appearance…
In this note we address the discrepancy found by Hung, Myers and Smolkin between the holographic calculation of entanglement entropy (using the Jacobson-Myers functional for the holographic minimal surface) and the CFT trace anomaly calculation if one uses the Wald prescription to compute the entropy in six dimensions. As anticipated in our previous work [1] the discrepancy originates entirely from a total derivative term present in the trace anomaly in six dimensions.
We revisit the computation of the trace anomaly for Weyl fermions using dimensional regularization. For a consistent treatment of the chiral gamma matrix $γ_*$ in dimensional regularization, we work in $n$ dimensions from the very beginning and use the Breitenlohner-Maison scheme to define $γ_*$. We show that the parity-odd contribution to the trace anomaly vanishes (for which the use of dimension-dependent identities is crucial), and that the parity-even contribution is half the one of a Dirac fermion. To arrive at this result, we compute the full renormalized expectation value of the fermion…
Despite the finiteness of stress tensor for a scalar field on the four-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole in the Israel-Hartle-Hawking vacuum, the Tolman temperature in thermal equilibrium is certainly divergent on the horizon due to the infinite blueshift of the Hawking temperature. The origin of this conflict is due to the fact that the conventional Tolman temperature was based on the assumption of a traceless stress tensor, which is, however, incompatible with the presence of the trace anomaly responsible for the Hawking radiation. Here, we present an effective Tolman temperature which is…
The evaporation of four-dimensional spherically symmetric black holes is presented in the framework of quantum field theory in curved spacetimes and semiclassical gravity. It is discussed how the evaporation process can be sourced by the presence of the trace anomaly of a massless, conformally coupled scalar field outside the apparent horizon of the black hole.
We discuss the derivation of the trace anomaly using a non-local effective action at one loop. This provides a simple and instructive form and emphasizes infrared physics. We then use this example to explore several of the properties of non-local actions, including displaying the action for the full non-local energy-momentum tensor. As an application, we show that the long-distance corrections at one loop lead to quantum violations of some classical consequences of the equivalence principle, for example producing a frequency dependence of the gravitational bending of light.
We construct concrete counterterms of the Balasubramanian-Kraus type for Einstein-scalar theories with designer gravity boundary conditions in AdS$_{4}$, so that the total action is finite on-shell and satisfy a well defined variational principle for an arbitrary scalar field potential. We focus on scalar fields with the conformal mass, $m^{2}=-2l^{-2}$, and show that the holographic mass matches the Hamiltonian mass for any boundary conditions. We compute the trace anomaly of the dual field theory in the generic case, as well as when there exist logarithmic branches of non-linear origin. As e…

The existence of trace anomalies for conformally coupled quantum fields in curved spacetimes, despite the vanishing of the trace of the conformally invariant classical stress-energy tensor, was firmly established in the 1970's, and expressions for the anomalous trace of the semi-classical quantum stress-energy tensor constructed from the curvature tensors of the background spacetime were proven to hold independent of the quantum state of the field. Subsequently, effective actions were devised whose variation with respect to the metric gives a conserved "anomalous stress-energy tensor" or ASET.…
In this article I shall clarify various aspects of the Dirac quantisation rules of 1930\cite{Dirac}, namely (i) the choice of antisymmetric Poisson brackets, (ii) the first quantisation Rule 1 (iii) the second quantisation Rule 2, and their relations to the trace anomaly. In fact in 1925 Dirac already had a preliminarily formulation of these rules \cite{Dirac3}. Using them, he had independently rediscovered the Born-Jordan quantisation rule \cite{BornJordan1925} and called it the quantum condition. This is the best known and undoubtedly most significant of the canonical quantisation rules of q…
