Short rise times of Fast Blue Optical Transients (FBOTs) require very light ejected envelopes, $M_{ej} \leq 10^{-1} M_\odot$, much smaller than of a typical supernova. Short peak times also mean that FBOTs should be hydrodynamically, not radioactively powered. The detection by Chandra of X-ray emission in AT2020mrf of $L_X \sim 10^{42} $ erg s$^{-1}$ after 328 days implies total, overall dominant, X-ray energetics at the Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) level of $\sim 6 \times 10^{49}$ erg. We further develop a model of Lyutikov & Toonen (2019), whereby FBOTs are the results of a late accretion induced collapse (AIC) of the product of super-Chandrasekhar double white dwarf (WD) merger between ONeMg WD and another WD. Small ejecta mass, and the rarity of FBOTs, result from the competition between mass loss from the merger product to the wind, and ashes added to the core, on time scale of $\sim 10^3-10^4$ years. FBOTs occur only when the envelope mass before AIC is $\leq 10^{-1} M_\odot$. FBOTs proper come from central engine-powered radiation-dominated forward shock as it propagates through ejecta. FBOTs' duration is determined by the diffusion time of photons produced by the NS-driven forward shock within the expanding ejecta. All the photons produced by the central source deep inside the ejecta escape almost simultaneously, producing a short bright event. The high energy emission is generated at the highly relativistic and highly magnetized termination shock, qualitatively similar to Pulsar Wind Nebulae. The X-ray bump observed in AT2020mrf by SRG/eROSITA, predicted by Lyutikov & Toonen (2019), is coming from the break-out of the engine-powered shock from the ejecta into the preceding wind. The model requires total energetics of just few $\times 10^{50}$ ergs, slightly above the observed X-rays. We predict that the system is hydrogen poor.
Newborn black holes in collapsing massive stars can be accompanied by a fallback disk. The accretion rate is typically super-Eddington and strong disk outflows are expected. Such outflows could be directly observed in some failed explosions of compact (blue supergiants or Wolf-Rayet stars) progenitors, and may be more common than long-duration gamma-ray bursts. Using an analytical model, we show that the fallback disk outflows produce blue UV-optical transients with a peak bolometric luminosity of ~10^(42-43) erg s^-1 (peak R-band absolute AB magnitudes of -16 to -18) and an emission duration …
Luminous fast blue optical transients (LFBOTs) such as AT2018cow form a rare class of engine-powered explosions of uncertain origin. A hallmark feature of these events is radio/millimeter synchrotron emission powered by the interaction of fast (v > 0.1 c) ejecta and dense circumstellar material (CSM) extending to large radii > 1e16 cm surrounding the progenitor. Assuming this CSM to be an outflow from the progenitor, we show that dust grains up to ~1 micron in size can form in the outflow in the years before the explosion. This dusty CSM would attenuate the transient's ultraviolet (UV) emissio…
In this Letter, we report the discovery of an ultraluminous fast-evolving transient in rest-frame UV wavelengths, MUSSES2020J, soon after its occurrence by using the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) mounted on the 8.2 m Subaru telescope. The rise time of about 5 days with an extremely high UV peak luminosity shares similarities to a handful of fast blue optical transients whose peak luminosities are comparable with the most luminous supernovae while their timescales are significantly shorter (hereafter "fast blue ultraluminous transient," FBUT). In addition, MUSSES2020J is located near the center of a …
I propose a new scenario, the polar common envelope jets supernova (CEJSN) impostor scenario, to account for AT2018cow-like fast blue optical transients (FBOTs). The polar CEJSN impostor scenario evolves through four main phases. (1) A red supergiant (RSG) star expands to tidally interact with a neutron star (NS) companion (or a black hole). The interaction increases the RSG mass loss rate to form a circumstellar matter (CSM) halo to ~0.1pc. (2) Shortly before the onset of a common envelope evolution (CEE) and about a year before explosion the NS accretes mass from the RSG envelope and launche…
The origin of the most luminous subclass of the fast blue optical transients (LFBOTs) is still unknown. We present an X-ray spectral analysis of AT2018cow-the LFBOT archetype-using NuSTAR, Swift, and XMM-Newton data. The source spectrum can be explained by the presence of a slim accretion disk, and we find that the mass accretion rate decreases to sub-Eddington levels >~ 200 days after the source's discovery. Applying our slim disk model to data obtained at multiple observational epochs, we constrain the mass of the central compact object in AT2018cow to be log(M_BH/Msun)=2.4+0.6/-0.1 at the 6…

The fast blue optical transients (FBOTs) are a new population of extragalactic transients of unclear physical origin. A variety of mechanisms have been proposed including failed supernova explosion, shock interaction with a dense medium, young magnetar, accretion onto a compact object, and stellar tidal disruption event, but none is conclusive. Here we report the discovery of a possible X-ray quasi-periodicity signal with a period of $\sim$250 second (at a significance level of 99.76%) in the brightest FBOT AT2018cow through the analysis of XMM-Newton/PN data. The signal is independently detec…
Progenitor models for the "luminous" subclass of Fast Blue Optical Transients (LFBOTs; prototype: AT2018cow) are challenged to simultaneously explain all of their observed properties: fast optical rise times < days; peak luminosities >1e44 erg/s; low yields <0.1 Msun of 56Ni; aspherical ejecta with a wide velocity range (<3000 km/s to > 0.1-0.5 c with increasing polar latitude); presence of hydrogen-depleted-but-not-free dense circumstellar material (CSM) on radial scales from ~1e14 cm to ~3e16 cm; embedded variable source of non-thermal X-ray/gamma-rays, suggestive of a compact object. We sho…
We present ZTF18abvkwla (the "Koala"), a fast blue optical transient discovered in the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) One-Day Cadence (1DC) Survey. ZTF18abvkwla has a number of features in common with the groundbreaking transient AT2018cow: blue colors at peak ($g-r\approx-0.5$ mag), a short rise time from half-max of under two days, a decay time to half-max of only three days, a high optical luminosity ($M_{g,\mathrm{peak}}\approx-20.6$mag), a hot ($\gtrsim 40,000$K) featureless spectrum at peak light, and a luminous radio counterpart. At late times ($Δt>80$d) the radio luminosity of ZTF18ab…

In the last decade a number of rapidly evolving transients have been discovered that are not easily explained by traditional supernovae models. We present optical and UV data on onee such object, SN 2018gep, that displayed a fast rise with a mostly featureless blue continuum around maximum light, and evolved to develop broad features more typical of a SN Ic-bl while retaining significant amounts of blue flux throughout its observations. The blue excess is most evident in its near-UV flux that is over 4 magnitudes brighter than other stripped envelope supernovae, but also visible in optical g$-…
We present low-frequency radio observations of a fast-rising blue optical transient (FBOT), AT\,2018cow, with the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT). Our observations span $t =$ 11 $-$ 570 days post-explosion and a frequency range of 250 $-$ 1450 MHz. The uGMRT light curves are best modeled as synchrotron emission from an inhomogeneous radio-emitting region expanding into an ionized medium. However, due to the lack of information on the source covering factor, which is a measure of the degree of inhomogeneity, we derive various parameters assuming the source covering factor to be…
We report the discovery of a large amplitude (factor of $\sim$100) X-ray transient (IC 10 X-2, CXOU J002020.99+591758.6) in the nearby dwarf starburst galaxy IC10 during our Chandra monitoring project. Based on the X-ray timing and spectral properties, and an optical counterpart observed with Gemini, the system is a high mass X-ray binary (HMXB) consisting of a luminous blue supergiant and a neutron star (NS). The highest measured luminosity of the source was 1.8$\times$10$^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$ during an outburst in 2003. Observations before, during and after a second outburst in 2010 constrain …
We present deep X-ray and radio observations of the Fast Blue Optical Transient (FBOT) AT2020xnd/ZTF20acigmel at $z=0.2433$ from $13$d to $269$d after explosion. AT2020xnd belongs to the category of optically luminous FBOTs with similarities to the archetypal event AT2018cow. AT2020xnd shows luminous radio emission reaching $L_ν\approx8\times10^{29}$ergs$^{-1}$Hz$^{-1}$ at 20GHz and $75$d post explosion, accompanied by luminous and rapidly fading soft X-ray emission peaking at $L_{X}\approx6\times10^{42}$ergs$^{-1}$. Interpreting the radio emission in the context of synchrotron radiation from …
The Fast Blue Optical Transient (FBOT) ATLAS18qqn (AT2018cow) has a light curve as bright as superluminous supernovae but rises and falls much faster. We model this light curve by circumstellar interaction of a pulsational pair-instability (PPI) supernova (SN) model based on our PPISN models studied in previous work. We focus on the 42 $M_\odot$ He star (core of a 80 $M_{\odot}$ star) which has circumstellar matter of mass 0.50 $M_\odot$. With the parameterized mass cut and the kinetic energy of explosion $E$, we perform hydrodynamical calculations of nucleosynthesis and optical light curves o…
We present X-ray and radio observations of the Fast Blue Optical Transient (FBOT) CRTS-CSS161010 J045834-081803 (CSS161010 hereafter) at t=69-531 days. CSS161010 shows luminous X-ray ($L_x\sim5\times 10^{39}\,\rm{erg\,s^{-1}}$) and radio ($L_ν\sim10^{29}\,\rm{erg\,s^{-1}Hz^{-1}}$) emission. The radio emission peaked at ~100 days post transient explosion and rapidly decayed. We interpret these observations in the context of synchrotron emission from an expanding blastwave. CSS161010 launched a mildly relativistic outflow with velocity $Γβc\ge0.55c$ at ~100 days. This is faster than the non-rela…
The discovery of SN 2018gep (ZTF18abukavn) challenged our understanding of the late-phase evolution of massive stars and their supernovae (SNe). The fast rise in luminosity of this SN (spectroscopically classified as a broad-lined Type Ic SN), indicates that the ejecta interacts with a dense circumstellar medium (CSM), while an additional energy source such as $^{56}$Ni-decay is required to explain the late-time light curve. These features hint at the explosion of a massive star with pre-supernova mass-loss. In this work, we examine the physical origins of rapidly evolving astrophysical transi…
To determine the epoch of reionization precisely and to reveal the property of inhomogeneous reionization are some of the most important topics of modern cosmology. Existing methods to investigate reionization which use cosmic microwave background, Ly$α$ emitters, quasars, or gamma ray bursts, have difficulties in terms of accuracy or event rate. We propose that recently discovered fast luminous blue transients (FLBTs) have a potential as a novel probe of reionization. We study the detectability of FLBTs at the epoch of reionization with upcoming WFIRST Wide-Field Instruments (WFI), using a st…
We present AT2020mrf (SRGe J154754.2$+$443907), an extra-galactic ($z=0.1353$) fast blue optical transient (FBOT) with a rise time of $t_{g,\rm rise}=3.7$ days and a peak luminosity of $M_{g,\rm peak}=-20.0$. Its optical spectrum around peak shows a broad ($v\sim0.1c$) emission feature on a blue continuum ($T\sim2\times10^4$ K), which bears a striking resemblance to AT2018cow. Its bright radio emission ($νL_ν= 1.2\times 10^{39}\,{\rm erg\,s^{-1}}$; $ν_{\rm rest}= 7.4$ GHz; 261 days) is similar to four other AT2018cow-like events, and can be explained by synchrotron radiation from the interacti…

Metal-poor massive stars may typically end up their lives as blue supergiants (BSGs). Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) from such progenitors could have ultra-long duration of relativistic jets. For example Population III (Pop III) GRBs at z ~ 10-20 might be observable as X-ray rich events with a typical duration of T_90 ~ 10^4(1+z) sec. Recent GRB111209A at z = 0.677 has an ultra long duration of T_90 ~ 2.5*10^4 sec so that it have been suggested that the progenitor might be a metal-poor BSGs in the local universe. Here, we suggest luminous UV/optical/infrared emissions associated with such a new class…
We fit the multi-band lightcurves of 40 fast blue optical transients (FBOTs) with the magnetar engine model. The mass of the FBOT ejecta, the initial spin period and polar magnetic field of the FBOT magnetars are respectively constrained to $M_{\rm{ej}}=0.18^{+0.52}_{-0.13}\,M_\odot$, $P_{\rm{i}}=9.4^{+8.1}_{-3.9}\,{\rm{ms}}$, and $B_{\rm p}=7^{+16}_{-5}\times10^{14}\,{\rm{G}}$. The wide distribution of the value of $B_{\rm p}$ spreads the parameter ranges of the magnetars from superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) to broad-line Type Ic supernovae (SNe Ic-BL; some are observed to be associated with…
Recent advances in time-domain astronomy have uncovered a new class of optical transients with timescales shorter than typical supernovae and a wide range of peak luminosities. Several subtypes have been identified within this broad class, including Ca-rich transients, .Ia supernovae, and fast/bright transients. We examine the predic- tions from a state-of-the-art grid of three-dimensional simulations of dynamical white dwarf interactions in the context of these fast optical transients. We find that for colli- sions involving carbon-oxygen or oxygen-neon white dwarfs the peak luminosities and …
We review the status of our knowledge on supergiant fast X-ray transients (SFXTs), a new hot topic in multi wavelength studies of binaries. We discuss the mechanisms believed to power these transients and then highlight the unique contribution Swift is giving to this field, and how new technology complements and sometimes changes the view of things.
The next generation of wide-field cosmic microwave background (CMB) surveys are uniquely poised to open a new window for time-domain astronomy in the millimeter band. Here we explore the discovery phase space for extragalactic transients with near-term and future CMB experiments to characterize the expected population. We use existing millimeter-band light curves of known transients (gamma-ray bursts, tidal disruption events, fast blue optical transients, neutron star mergers) and theoretical models, in conjunction with known and estimated volumetric rates. Using Monte Carlo simulations of var…
Mounting evidence suggests that Luminous Fast Blue Optical Transients (LFBOTs) are powered by a compact object, launching an asymmetric and fast outflow responsible for the radiation observed in the ultraviolet, optical, infrared, radio, and X-ray bands. Proposed scenarios aiming to explain the electromagnetic emission include an inflated cocoon, surrounding a jet choked in the extended stellar envelope. In alternative, the observed radiation may arise from the disk formed by the delayed merger of a black hole with a Wolf-Rayet star. We explore the neutrino production in these scenarios, i.e. …
The two still unidentified MeV sources EGR J1122-5946 and AGL J2022+3622 are here tentatively associated with soft gamma-ray candidate counterparts detected through INTEGRAL/IBIS observations. On the basis of spatial proximity and/or similar transient behaviour, we propose the supergiant fast X-ray transient (SFXT) IGR J11215-5952 and the candidate SFXT IGR J20188+3647 as possible candidate counterparts of EGR J1122-5946 and AGL J2022+3622, respectively. Our findings possibly suggest that hard fast X-ray transients could represent a new class of galactic transient MeV/TeV emitters. Additional …
We review X-ray properties of the Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients following from their observations with INTEGRAL and show that a compact object in these systems is a neutron star with strong magnetic field accreting from the stellar wind of a donor star. We show that presence of a centrifugal barrier at the magnetospheric boundary of the neutron star may be a key to understanding of abrupt short X-ray outbursts of these transients and long intervals of their quiescence.
We report on small-amplitude optical variability and recent dissipation of the unusually persistent broad emission lines in the blue compact dwarf galaxy PHL 293B. The galaxy's unusual spectral features (P Cygni-like profiles with $\sim$800 km s$^{-1}$ blueshifted absorption lines) have resulted in conflicting interpretations of the nature of this source in the literature. However, analysis of new Gemini spectroscopy reveals the broad emission has begun to fade after being persistent for over a decade prior. Precise difference imaging light curves constructed with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey …
Supergiant Fast X-ray transients are a subclass of high mass X-ray binaries displaying a peculiar and still poorly understood extreme variability in the X-ray domain. These sources undergo short sporadic outbursts (LX ~ 10^36 - 10^37 erg/s), lasting few ks at the most, and spend a large fraction of their time in an intermediate luminosity state at about LX ~ 10^33 - 10^34 erg/s. The sporadic and hardly predictable outbursts of supergiant fast X-ray transients were so far best discovered by large field of view (FOV) coded-mask instruments; their lower luminosity states require, instead, higher …
We have investigated the dipping activity observed in the high-mass X-ray binary 4U 1907+09 and shown that the source continues to pulsate in the "off" state, noting that the transition between the "on" and "off" states may be either dip-like or flare-like. This behavior may be explained in the framework of the "gated accretion" scenario proposed to explain the flares in supergiant fast X-ray transients (SFXTs). We conclude that 4U 1907+09 might prove to be a missing link between the SFXTs and ordinary accreting pulsars.
Phase-targeted RXTE observations have allowed us to detect a transient 71.49 \pm 0.02 s signal that is most likely to be originating from the supergiant fast X-ray transient IGR J17544-2619. The phase-folded light curve shows a possible double-peaked structure with a pulsed flux of ~4.8*10^-12 erg cm^-2 s^-1 (3-10 keV). Assuming the signal to indicate the spin period of the neutron star in the system, the provisional location of IGR J17544-2619 on the Corbet diagram places the system within the classical wind-fed supergiant XRB region. Such a result illustrates the growing trend of supergiant …
The Cadmium Zinc Telluride Imager on AstroSat has proven to be a very effective all-sky monitor in the hard X-ray regime, detecting over three hundred GRBs and putting highly competitive upper limits on X-ray emissions from gravitational wave sources and fast radio bursts. We present the algorithms used for searching for such transient sources in CZTI data, and for calculating upper limits in case of non-detections. We introduce CIFT: the CZTI Interface for Fast Transients, a framework used to streamline these processes. We present details of 88 new GRBs detected by this framework that were pr…
Stellar Tidal Disruptions by Newborn Neutron Stars or Black Holes: A Mechanism for Hydrogen-poor (Super)luminous Supernovae and Fast Blue Optical Transients
We report here on the XMM-Newton observations of the three supergiant fast X-ray transients (SFXT) XTE J1739-302, IGRJ08408-4503, and IGRJ18410-0535. For the latter source we only discuss some preliminary results of our data analysis. Some interpretation is provided for the timing and spectral behavior of the three sources in terms of the different theoretical models proposed so far to interpret the behavior of the SFXTs.
We present new light curves and spectra for a number of extragalactic optical transients or "SN impostors" related to giant eruptions of LBVs, and we provide a comparative discussion of LBV-like giant eruptions known to date. New data include photometry and spectroscopy of SNe1999bw, 2000ch, 2001ac, 2002bu, 2006bv, and 2010dn. SN2010dn resembles SN2008S and NGC 300-OT, whereas SN2002bu shows spectral evolution from a normal LBV at early times to a twin of these cooler transients at late times. SN2008S, NGC300-OT, and SN2010dn appear to be special cases of a broader eruptive phenomenon where th…
The observed lightcurves and estimated sky rate of fast extragalactic x-ray transients (XRTs) discovered in archival Chandra data indicate that they belong to two distinct XRT populations. The first population of relatively short duration pulses, which typically last less than few minutes seems to be pulses of x-ray flashes (XRFs), which are nearby long duration gamma ray bursts viewed from far off axis. The second population of much longer pulses, which typically last hours, seems to be the early time afterglows of short gamma ray bursts (SGRBs) which are beamed away from Earth, as was shown …
Temporal analysis of INTEGRAL/IBIS data has revealed a 5.7195\pm0.0007 day periodicity in the supergiant fast X-ray transient (SFXT) source AX J1845.0-0433, which we interpret as the orbital period of the system. The new-found knowledge of the orbital period is utilised to investigate the geometry of the system by means of estimating an upper limit for the size of the supergiant (<27 R_{\sun}) as well as the eccentricity of the orbit (ε<0.37).
