Hybrid images is a technique to generate images with two interpretations that change as a function of viewing distance. It has been utilized to study multiscale processing of images by the human visual system. Using 63,000 hybrid images across 10 fruit categories, here we show that predictions of deep learning vision models qualitatively matches with the human perception of these images. Our results provide yet another evidence in support of the hypothesis that Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Transformers are good at modeling the feedforward sweep of information in the ventral stream of visual cortex. Code and data is available at https://github.com/aliborji/hybrid_images.git.
In recent developments in the field of Computer Vision, a rise is seen in the use of transformer-based architectures. They are surpassing the state-of-the-art set by CNN architectures in accuracy but on the other hand, they are computationally very expensive to train from scratch. As these models are quite recent in the Computer Vision field, there is a need to study it's transfer learning capabilities and compare it with CNNs so that we can understand which architecture is better when applied to real world problems with small data. In this work, we follow a simple yet restrictive method for f…

Transformer emerges as a powerful tool for visual recognition. In addition to demonstrating competitive performance on a broad range of visual benchmarks, recent works also argue that Transformers are much more robust than Convolutions Neural Networks (CNNs). Nonetheless, surprisingly, we find these conclusions are drawn from unfair experimental settings, where Transformers and CNNs are compared at different scales and are applied with distinct training frameworks. In this paper, we aim to provide the first fair & in-depth comparisons between Transformers and CNNs, focusing on robustness evalu…

Medical image segmentation - the prerequisite of numerous clinical needs - has been significantly prospered by recent advances in convolutional neural networks (CNNs). However, it exhibits general limitations on modeling explicit long-range relation, and existing cures, resorting to building deep encoders along with aggressive downsampling operations, leads to redundant deepened networks and loss of localized details. Hence, the segmentation task awaits a better solution to improve the efficiency of modeling global contexts while maintaining a strong grasp of low-level details. In this paper, …
Object trackers deployed on low-power devices need to be light-weight, however, most of the current state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods rely on using compute-heavy backbones built using CNNs or transformers. Large sizes of such models do not allow their deployment in low-power conditions and designing compressed variants of large tracking models is of great importance. This paper demonstrates how highly compressed light-weight object trackers can be designed using neural architectural pruning of large CNN and transformer based trackers. Further, a comparative study on architectural choices best su…

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have reigned for a decade as the de facto approach to automated medical image diagnosis. Recently, vision transformers (ViTs) have appeared as a competitive alternative to CNNs, yielding similar levels of performance while possessing several interesting properties that could prove beneficial for medical imaging tasks. In this work, we explore whether it is time to move to transformer-based models or if we should keep working with CNNs - can we trivially switch to transformers? If so, what are the advantages and drawbacks of switching to ViTs for medical ima…
State of the art magnetic resonance (MR) image super-resolution methods (ISR) using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) leverage limited contextual information due to the limited spatial coverage of CNNs. Vision transformers (ViT) learn better global context that is helpful in generating superior quality HR images. We combine local information of CNNs and global information from ViTs for image super resolution and output super resolved images that have superior quality than those produced by state of the art methods. We include extra constraints through multiple novel loss functions that pres…
Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been widely used in various vision tasks, e.g. image classification, semantic segmentation, etc. Unfortunately, standard 2D CNNs are not well suited for spherical signals such as panorama images or spherical projections, as the sphere is an unstructured grid. In this paper, we present Spherical Transformer which can transform spherical signals into vectors that can be directly processed by standard CNNs such that many well-designed CNNs architectures can be reused across tasks and datasets by pretraining. To this end, the proposed method first uses loc…
Recently, with the advance of deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), person Re-Identification (Re-ID) has witnessed great success in various applications. However, with limited receptive fields of CNNs, it is still challenging to extract discriminative representations in a global view for persons under non-overlapped cameras. Meanwhile, Transformers demonstrate strong abilities of modeling long-range dependencies for spatial and sequential data. In this work, we take advantages of both CNNs and Transformers, and propose a novel learning framework named Hierarchical Aggregation Transformer …

The recent success of Vision Transformers is shaking the long dominance of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) in image recognition for a decade. Specifically, in terms of robustness on out-of-distribution samples, recent research finds that Transformers are inherently more robust than CNNs, regardless of different training setups. Moreover, it is believed that such superiority of Transformers should largely be credited to their self-attention-like architectures per se. In this paper, we question that belief by closely examining the design of Transformers. Our findings lead to three highly ef…

Vision Transformers (ViTs) have recently dominated a range of computer vision tasks, yet it suffers from low training data efficiency and inferior local semantic representation capability without appropriate inductive bias. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) inherently capture regional-aware semantics, inspiring researchers to introduce CNNs back into the architecture of the ViTs to provide desirable inductive bias for ViTs. However, is the locality achieved by the micro-level CNNs embedded in ViTs good enough? In this paper, we investigate the problem by profoundly exploring how the macro a…

Recently, vision Transformers (ViTs) are developing rapidly and starting to challenge the domination of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in the realm of computer vision (CV). With the general-purpose Transformer architecture replacing the hard-coded inductive biases of convolution, ViTs have surpassed CNNs, especially in data-sufficient circumstances. However, ViTs are prone to over-fit on small datasets and thus rely on large-scale pre-training, which expends enormous time. In this paper, we strive to liberate ViTs from pre-training by introducing CNNs' inductive biases back to ViTs while…

Vision Transformers (ViTs) is emerging as an alternative to convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for visual recognition. They achieve competitive results with CNNs but the lack of the typical convolutional inductive bias makes them more data-hungry than common CNNs. They are often pretrained on JFT-300M or at least ImageNet and few works study training ViTs with limited data. In this paper, we investigate how to train ViTs with limited data (e.g., 2040 images). We give theoretical analyses that our method (based on parametric instance discrimination) is superior to other methods in that it can…

Vision transformers (ViTs) have demonstrated impressive performance on a series of computer vision tasks, yet they still suffer from adversarial examples. % crafted in a similar fashion as CNNs. In this paper, we posit that adversarial attacks on transformers should be specially tailored for their architecture, jointly considering both patches and self-attention, in order to achieve high transferability. More specifically, we introduce a dual attack framework, which contains a Pay No Attention (PNA) attack and a PatchOut attack, to improve the transferability of adversarial samples across diff…
Sketch-based image retrieval (SBIR) is the task of retrieving natural images (photos) that match the semantics and the spatial configuration of hand-drawn sketch queries. The universality of sketches extends the scope of possible applications and increases the demand for efficient SBIR solutions. In this paper, we study classic triplet-based SBIR solutions and show that a persistent invariance to horizontal flip (even after model finetuning) is harming performance. To overcome this limitation, we propose several approaches and evaluate in depth each of them to check their effectiveness. Our ma…

In this paper, we undertake a simple and effective approach that can be easily applied to both vision transformers and convolutional neural networks. Specifically, we consider pruning as an evolution process of sub-network structures that inherit weights through reconstruction techn…

Coreset selection is among the most effective ways to reduce the training time of CNNs, however, only limited is known on how the resultant models will behave under variations of the coreset size, and choice of datasets and models. Moreover, given the recent paradigm shift towards transformer-based models, it is still an open question how coreset selection would impact their performance. There are several similar intriguing questions that need to be answered for a wide acceptance of coreset selection methods, and this paper attempts to answer some of these. Recent advances in attention-based networks have shown that Vision Transformers can achieve state-of-the-art or near state-of-the-art results on many image classification tasks. This puts transformers in the unique position of being a promising alternative to traditional convolutional neural networks (CNNs). While CNNs have been carefully studied with respect to adversarial attacks, the same cannot be said of Vision Transformers. In this paper, we study the robustness of Vision Transformers to adversarial examples. Our analyses of transformer security is divided into three parts. First, we tes…
Human activity recognition (HAR) is a machine learning task with important applications in healthcare especially in the context of home care of patients and older adults. HAR is often based on data collected from smart sensors, particularly smart home IoT devices such as smartphones, wearables and other body sensors. Deep learning techniques like convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and recurrent neural networks (RNNs) have been used for HAR, both in centralized and federated settings. However, these techniques have certain limitations: RNNs cannot be easily parallelized, CNNs have the limitat…
Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have become the de facto gold standard in computer vision applications in the past years. Recently, however, new model architectures have been proposed challenging the status quo. The Vision Transformer (ViT) relies solely on attention modules, while the MLP-Mixer architecture substitutes the self-attention modules with Multi-Layer Perceptrons (MLPs). Despite their great success, CNNs have been widely known to be vulnerable to adversarial attacks, causing serious concerns for security-sensitive applications. Thus, it is critical for the community to know wh…
Vision Transformers (VTs) are becoming a valuable alternative to Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) when it comes to problems involving high-dimensional and spatially organized inputs such as images. However, their Transfer Learning (TL) properties are not yet well studied, and it is not fully known whether these neural architectures can transfer across different domains as well as CNNs. In this paper we study whether VTs that are pre-trained on the popular ImageNet dataset learn representations that are transferable to the non-natural image domain. To do so we consider three well-studied ar…
With the booming of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), CNNs such as VGG-16 and ResNet-50 widely serve as backbone in SAR ship detection. However, CNN based backbone is hard to model long-range dependencies, and causes the lack of enough high-quality semantic information in feature maps of shallow layers, which leads to poor detection performance in complicated background and small-sized ships cases. To address these problems, we propose a SAR ship detection method based on Swin Transformer and Feature Enhancement Feature Pyramid Network (FEFPN). Swin Transformer serves as backbone to model …

Self-attention based models such as vision transformers (ViTs) have emerged as a very competitive architecture alternative to convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in computer vision. Despite increasingly stronger variants with ever-higher recognition accuracies, due to the quadratic complexity of self-attention, existing ViTs are typically demanding in computation and model size. Although several successful design choices (e.g., the convolutions and hierarchical multi-stage structure) of prior CNNs have been reintroduced into recent ViTs, they are still not sufficient to meet the limited resou…

In recent years, self-supervised monocular depth estimation has drawn much attention since it frees of depth annotations and achieved remarkable results on standard benchmarks. However, most of existing methods only focus on either daytime or nighttime images, thus their performance degrades on the other domain because of the large domain shift between daytime and nighttime images. To address this problem, in this paper we propose a two-branch network named GlocalFuse-Depth for self-supervised depth estimation of all-day images. The daytime and nighttime image in input image pair are fed into …

With these modifications, we are able to largely improve TransBTS performance. Inspired by a nnU-Net framework we decided to combine it with our…

Here, we explore a hardware-efficient dynamic inference regime, named dynamic weight slicing, which adaptively slice a part of network parameters for inputs with diverse difficulty levels, while keeping parameters stored statically and contiguously in hardware to prevent the extra burden of sparse computation. Designed to learn long-range interactions on sequential data, transformers continue to show state-of-the-art results on a wide variety of tasks. In contrast to CNNs, they contain no inductive bias that prioritizes local interactions. This makes them expressive, but also computationally infeasible for long sequences, such as high-resolution images. We demonstrate how combining the effectiveness of the inductive bias of CNNs with the expressivity of transformers enables them to model and thereby synthesize high-resolution images. We show how to (i) use CNNs to learn a context-rich vocabulary of …
Light-weight convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are the de-facto for mobile vision tasks. Their spatial inductive biases allow them to learn representations with fewer parameters across different vision tasks. However, these networks are spatially local. To learn global representations, self-attention-based vision trans-formers (ViTs) have been adopted. Unlike CNNs, ViTs are heavy-weight. In this paper, we ask the following question: is it possible to combine the strengths of CNNs and ViTs to build a light-weight and low latency network for mobile vision tasks? Towards this end, we introduce…

We revisit large kernel design in modern convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Inspired by recent advances in vision transformers (ViTs), in this paper, we demonstrate that using a few large convolutional kernels instead of a stack of small kernels could be a more powerful paradigm. We suggested five guidelines, e.g., applying re-parameterized large depth-wise convolutions, to design efficient high-performance large-kernel CNNs. Following the guidelines, we propose RepLKNet, a pure CNN architecture whose kernel size is as large as 31x31, in contrast to commonly used 3x3. RepLKNet greatly close…
