The Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) is a new age detector, which can handle the high flux of particles. The GEM foil, which is constructed using 50$μ$m highly insulating foil (Kapton/Apical) coated with 5$μ$m layers of copper, on both sides, with a network of specifically shaped holes is the major component of these detectors. The European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) has been the sole supplier of the GEM foils until recently when a few other companies started manufacturing GEM foils under the transfer of technology (TOT) agrement from CERN. Techtra is one such company in Europe which gained a right to use CERN developed technology in order to produce commercially viable GEM foils. Micropack Pvt. Ltd. is another company in India which has successfully manufactured good quality GEM foils. Due to the microscopic structure of holes and dependence on the electric field inside, it becomes essential to study the defect and uniformity of holes along with the electrical property of foils under ambient conditions. In this work we are reporting the tests condition of Techtra GEM foils. We report on the development of a cost effective and efficient technique to study the GEM foils holes geometry, distribution, and defects. We also report on the electrical properties of these foils like leakage current, stability, and discharges. At the detector level, we describe the high voltage (HV) response, gain, uniformity, and stability. The GEMs have been proposed to have a wider applications, so we performed a feasibility study to utilize these for the imaging. We irrediated various objects of varying density with X-rays and reconstructed the images. The reconstructed image shows a good distinction between materials of different densities, which can be very useful in various applications like medical imaging or cargo imaging.
The increasing demand for Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) foils has been driven by their application in many current and proposed high-energy physics experiments. Micropack, a Bengaluru-based company, has established and commercialized GEM foils for the first time in India. Micropack used the double-mask etching technique to successfully produce 10 cm $\times$ 10 cm GEM foil. In this paper, we report on the development as well as the geometrical and electrical properties of these foils, including the size uniformity of the holes and leakage current measurements. Our characterization studies show…
In this paper, limitations of the common method measuring intrinsic spatial resolution of the GEM imaging detector are presented. Through theoretical analysis and experimental verification, we have improved the common method to avoid these limitations. Using these improved methods, more precise measurement of intrinsic spatial resolution are obtained.
This work is proposing and exploring the use of multichannel readout electronics, already used in quality assurance for gain uniformity studies, to measure the uniformity of the induction gap in GEM based detectors. The measurement will furthermore provide a qualification of the readout electrodes in terms of disconnected or shorted channels. The proposed method relies on the dependence on the induction gap capacitance between the readout strips and the bottom of the GEM. The measurement is obtained inducing capacitively a signal on the readout strips pulsing the bottom layer of the GEM foil. …
Muon Tomography based on the measurement of multiple scattering of atmospheric cosmic ray muons in matter is a promising technique for detecting heavily shielded high-Z radioactive materials (U, Pu) in cargo or vehicles. The technique uses the deflection of cosmic ray muons in matter to perform tomographic imaging of high-Z material inside a probed volume. A Muon Tomography Station (MTS) requires position-sensitive detectors with high spatial resolution for optimal tracking of incoming and outgoing cosmic ray muons. Micro Pattern Gaseous Detector (MPGD) technologies such as Gas Electron Multip…
We report the application of the resistive anode readout method on a two dimensional imaging GEM detector. The resistive anode consists of $6\times6$ cells with the cell size $6~\mathrm{mm}\times6~\mathrm{mm}$. New electronics and DAQ system are used to process the signals from the 49 readout channels. The detector has been tested by using the X-ray tube (8~keV). The spatial resolution of the detector is about $103.46~\mathrm{μm}$ with the detector response part about $66.41~\mathrm{μm}$. The nonlinearity of the detector is less than $1.5\%$. A quite good two dimensional imaging capability is …
In this work we characterized a X-ray position sensitive gaseous detector based in a triple stack of gas electron multipliers (GEM). The readout circuit is divided in 256 strips for each dimension and using a resistive chain interconnecting the strips, we are able to reconstruct the radiation interaction points by resistive charge division. The detector achieved gains above $10^4$, energy resolution of 15.28% (FWHM) for 5.9keV X-rays, and position resolution of 1.2mm, while operating in Ar/CO$_2$(90/10) at atmospheric pressure.
Earlier we have developed and successfully tested a RICH detector prototype consisting in a CsI coated triple GEM operated in gas flushed mode In the given work, a modified version of this detector for a completely different application - fire safety- is presented. The detector operates in sealed mode and is combined with an optical system and a narrow band filter As a photosensitive element, a CsI photocathode coated with a thin layer of ethylferrocene was used. This detector is almost 1000 times more sensitive than the best commercial flame sensor; it has 100 times better time resolution and…
Muon tomography based on the measurement of multiple scattering of atmospheric cosmic ray muons is a promising technique for detecting and imaging heavily shielded high-Z nuclear materials such as enriched uranium. This technique could complement standard radiation detection portals currently deployed at international borders and ports, which are not very sensitive to heavily shielded nuclear materials. We image small targets in 3D using $2\times 2 \times 2 mm^3$ voxels with a minimal muon tomography station prototype that tracks muons with Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors read out in 2…
We have developed and tested several prototypes of GEM-like detectors with electrodes coated with resistive layers: CuO or CrO. These detectors can operate stably at gains close to 10E5 and they are very robust. We discovered that the cathodes of these detectors could be coated by CsI layers and in such a way the detectors gain high efficiency for the UV photons. We also demonstrated that such detectors can operate stably in the cascade mode and high overall gains (~10E6) are reachable. This opens applications in several areas, for example in RICH or in noble liquid TPCs. Results from the firs…
A simple X-ray imaging system using off-the-shelf electronics and simple reconstruction algorithms aiming a spatial resolution of 1.7 mm ($\sim 3\,\%$ of the detector length) is described in this work. For this, two 100 cm$^2$ Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) foils with a thickness of 100 μm (2-fold thicker than the standard ones) were immersed in a mixture of argon and carbon dioxide (70:30). The charge readout with 2D position determination was done with resistive charge division. Due to their higher thickness with respect to the standard GEMs, the 100 μm thick GEM foils were found to be less p…

A prototype Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detector is under construction for medical imaging purposes. A single thick GEM of size 10x10 cm^2 is assembled inside a square shaped air-tight box which is made of Perspex glass. In order to ionize gas inside the drift field two types of voltage supplier circuits were fabricated, and array of 2x4 pads of each size 4x8 mm^2 were utilized for collecting avalanche charges. Preliminary testing results show that the circuit which produces high voltage and low current is better than that of low voltage and high current supplier circuit in terms of x-ray si…
A triple-GEM detector with two-dimensional readout is developed. The detector provides high position resolution for powder diffraction experiments at synchrotron radiation. Spatial resolution of the detector is measured in the lab using a 55Fe X-ray source. A resolution of about 110 um FWHM is achieved. The energy resolution is better than 27% for 5.9 keV X-rays. The detector's validity under illumination of photons in particular energy range is verified using a Cu X-ray tube. Imaging of the head of a wire stripper with X-ray tube demonstrates its imaging ability. A diffraction imaging experim…
The optimization of resistive anode for two dimensional imaging detectors which consists of a series of high resistive square pads surrounding by low resistive strips has been studied by both numerical simulations and experimental tests. It has been found that to obtain good detector performance, the resistance ratio of the pad to the strip should be larger than 5, the nonuniformity of the pad surface resistivity had better be less than $20\%$, a smaller pad width leads to a smaller spatial resolution and when the pad width is $6mm$, the spatial resolution ($σ$) can reach about $105μm$. Based …

The energy resolution of GEM detector is tested by 55Fe ray source to prove the GEM detector has a good performance. The analysis of the complete signal-cycles allows to get the rising time and pulse heights. The experiment result indicates that cosmic muon and x-ray can be discrimi…
Gaseous detectors are used in both low energy and high energy physics experiments. The present day gaseous detectors, i.e., the Micro-Pattern gaseous detectors (MPGD) are more efficient and fast. Gas Electron multiplier (GEM) is quite well know among the MPGD members. The MPGDs are also being used in other applications like tomography/imaging, moreover, recently, hybridization of two different kinds of MPGD is another emerging subject of R\&D. Ion feedback is an intrinsic drawback of the gaseous detectors. However, it is not a big issue where the event rate is not very high, or the drift volum…
The GEM-based neutron detector has flourished in the past decade. However almost all the GEM-based neutron detectors work in the flow-gas mode, and the long-term performances of the detectors may be unstable due to the dynamic changes of atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature. In this paper, a sealed ceramic GEM-based neutron detector was developed at China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) and its sensitive area was 100 mm * 100 mm. The characterizations of the detector were presented and discussed, which included the plateau curve, the neutron beam profile, the neutron wavelength spectr…
We study the performance of the triple GEM (Gas Electron Multiplier) detector in pure noble gases He and Kr at high pressures, varying from 1 to 15 atm. The operation in these gases is compared to that recently studied in Ne, Ar and Xe. It turned out that light noble gases, He and Ne, have superior performance: the highest gain, approaching 10^5, and an unusual gain dependence on pressure. In particular, the maximum gain in He and Ne does not decrease with pressure, in contrast to Ar, Kr and Xe. These results are of high relevance for understanding basic mechanisms of electron avalanching in n…
We describe a UV photo-detector with single photon(electron) counting and imaging capability. It is based on a CsI photocathode, a GEM charge multiplier and a self triggering CMOS analog pixel chip with 105k pixels at 50 micron pitch. The single photoelectron produced by the absorption of a UV photon is drifted to and multiplied inside a single GEM hole. The coordinates of the GEM avalanche are reconstructed with high accuracy (4 micron rms) by the pixel chip. As a result the map of the GEM holes, arranged on a triangular pattern at 50micron pitch, is finely imaged.
We report on the properties of thick GEM-like (THGEM) electron multipliers made of 0.4 mm thick double-sided Cu-clad G-10 plates, perforated with a dense hexagonal array of 0.3 mm diameter drilled holes. Photon detectors comprising THGEMs coupled to semi-transparent CsI photocathodes or reflective ones deposited on the THGEM surface were studied with Ar/CO2 (70:30), Ar/CH4 (95:5), CH4 and CF4. Gains of ~100000 or exceeding 1000000 were reached with single- or double-THGEM, respectively; the signals have 5-10 ns rise times. The electric field configurations at the THGEM electrodes result in an …
The thick GEM (THGEM) [1] is an "expanded" GEM, economically produced in the PCB industry by simple drilling and etching in G-10 or other insulating materials (fig. 1). Similar to GEM, its operation is based on electron gas avalanche multiplication in sub-mm holes, resulting in very high gain and fast signals. Due to its large hole size, the THGEM is particularly efficient in transporting the electrons into and from the holes, leading to efficient single-electron detection and effective cascaded operation. The THGEM provides true pixilated radiation localization, ns signals, high gain and high…
In this work we show the operation and results of an X-ray fluorescence imaging system using a cascade of three gas electron multipliers (GEM) and a pinhole assembly. The detector operates in Ar/CO$_2$ (90/10) at atmospheric pressure, with resistive chains applied to the strip readout, which allow to use only five electronic channels: two for each dimension and a fifth for energy and trigger. The corrections applied to the energy spectra to compensate for small changes in the signal amplitude and also differences in gain throughout the sensitive area are described and the clear improvement of …

The prototype detector has been tested at the SAXS beamline at ELETTRA synchrotron light source with a beam energy of 8 keV to test its capabilities in the rough beamline environment. The imaging performance is examined with apertures and standard diffraction targets. Finally, the application in a time-resolved lipid tempe…
Gas electron multipliers (GEM) detectors are gaseous detectors widely used for tracking and imaging applications due to their good position resolution, high efficiency at high irradiation rates, among other factors. In the present work, position resolution, charge spread, energy resolution and gain uniformity have been investigated experimentally for single and double GEM geometries using an Fe-55 source. The position resolution measurements have been performed by a novel method, using a high precision instrument for source movement and is found to be highly successful. The result shows that t…
In this work, a serial on-line cluster reconstruction technique based on FPGA technology was developed to compress experiment data and reduce the dead time of data transmission and storage. At the same time, X-ray imaging experiment based on a two-dimensional positive sensitive triple GEM detector with an effective readout area of 10 cm*10 cm was done to demonstrate this technique with FPGA development board. The result showed that the reconstruction technology was practicality and efficient. It provides a new idea for data compression of large spectrometers.
We review latest progress in gaseous photomultipliers (GPM) combining solid photocathodes and various types of novel electron multipliers. Cascaded gaseous electron multipliers (GEM) coated with CsI photocathodes can efficiently replace UVsensitive wire chambers for single-photon recording in Cherenkov and other detectors. Other hole-multipliers with patterned electrodes (Micro-Hole and Strip Plates) and improved ion-blocking properties are discussed; these permit reducing considerably photon- and ion-induced secondary effects. Photon detectors with other electron-multiplier techniques are bri…

The detector has spatial resolution of ~0.2mm and dynamic range of ~100 that allows to realize the precision of signal measurement at a percent level. The frame rate can be tuned up to 8 MHz (125 ns per image) and up to 32 images can be stored in one shot. At present DIMEX is used wi…
Gaseous detectors are fundamental components of all present and planned high energy physics experiments. Over the past decade two representatives (GEM, Micromegas) of the Micro-Pattern Gas Detector (MPGD) concept have become increasingly important; the high radiation resistance and excellent spatial and time resolution make them an invaluable tool to confront future detector challenges at the next generation of colliders. Novel structures where GEM and Micromegas are directly coupled to the CMOS multi-pixel readout represent an exciting field and allow to reconstruct fine-granularity, two-dime…
