We present the results from a spectroscopic survey using the MOSFIRE near-infrared spectrograph on the 10m Keck telescope to search for Ly$α$ emission from candidate galaxies at z ~9-10 in four of the CANDELS fields (GOODS-N, EGS, UDS, and COSMOS). We observed 11 target galaxies, detecting Ly$α$ from one object in ~8.1 hours of integration, at z = 8.665 +/- 0.001 with an integrated signal-to-noise > 7. This galaxy is in the CANDELS Extended Groth Strip (EGS) field, and lies physically close (3.5 physical Mpc [pMpc]) to another confirmed galaxy in this field with Ly$α$ detected at z=8.683 (Zitrin et al. 2015). The detection of Ly$α$ suggests the existence of large (~1 pMpc) ionized bubbles fairly early in the reionization process. We explore the ionizing output needed to create bubbles of this size at this epoch and find that such a bubble requires more than the ionizing power provided by the full expected population of galaxies (by integrating the UV Luminosity Function down to M_UV = -13). The Ly$α$ we detect would be able to escape the predominantly-neutral intergalactic medium at this epoch if our galaxy is inhabiting an overdensity, which would be consistent with the photometric overdensity previously identified in this region by Finkelstein et al. 2021. This implies that the CANDELS EGS field is hosting an overdensity at z = 8.7 which is powering one (or more) ionized bubbles, a hypothesis that will be imminently testable with forthcoming James Webb Space Telescope observations in this field.
We present the prospects of extracting information about the Epoch of Reionization by identifying the remaining neutral regions, referred to as islands, in tomographic observations of the redshifted 21-cm signal. Using simulated data sets we show that at late times the 21-cm power spectrum is fairly insensitive to the details of the reionization process but that the properties of the neutral islands can distinguish between different reionization scenarios. We compare the properties of these islands with those of ionized bubbles. At equivalent volume filling fractions, neutral islands tend to b…

A growing population of metal absorbers are observed at z>5, many showing strong evolution in incidence approaching the epoch of hydrogen reionization. Follow-up surveys examining fields around these metals have resulted in galaxy detections but the direct physical relationship between the detected galaxies and absorbers is unclear. Upcoming observations will illuminate this galaxy-absorber relationship, but the theoretical framework for interpreting these observations is lacking. To inform future z>5 studies, we define the expected relationship between metals and galaxies using the Technicolo…
We present the Obelisk project, a cosmological radiation-hydrodynamics simulation following the assembly and reionization of a protocluster progenitor during the first two billions of years from the big bang, down to $z = 3.5$. The simulation resolves haloes down to the atomic cooling limit, and tracks the contribution of different sources of ionization: stars, active galactic nuclei, and collisions. The Obelisk project is designed specifically to study the coevolution of high redshift galaxies and quasars in an environment favouring black hole growth. In this paper, we establish the relative …

A SPectroscopic survey of biased halos In the Reionization Era (ASPIRE): JWST Discovers an Overdensity around a Metal Absorption-selected Galaxy at $z\sim5.5$
Recent observations have found that many $z\sim 6$ quasar fields lack galaxies. This unexpected lack of galaxies may potentially be explained by quasar radiation feedback. In this paper I present a suite of 3D radiative transfer cosmological simulations of quasar fields. I find that quasar radiation suppresses star formation in low mass galaxies, mainly by photo-dissociating their molecular hydrogen. Photo-heating also plays a role, but only after $\sim$100 Myr. However, galaxies which already have stellar mass above $10^5 M_\odot$ when the quasar turns on will not be suppressed significantly.…
We present evidence that a region of high effective Ly$α$ optical depth at $z\sim5.7$ is associated with an underdense region at the tail end of cosmic reionization. We carried out a survey of Lyman-break Galaxies (LBGs) using Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam in the field of the $z=5.98$ quasar J0148+0600, whose spectrum presents an unusually long ($\sim160 \mathrm{cMpc}$) and opaque ($τ\gtrsim7$) Ly$α$ trough at $5.5\le z\le 5.9$. LBG candidates were selected to lie within the redshift range of the trough, and the projected number densities were measured within 90~cMpc of the quasar sightline. The re…
A long (110 cMpc/$h$) and deep absorption trough in the Ly$α$ forest has been observed extending down to redshift 5.5 in the spectrum of ULAS J0148+0600. Although no Ly$α$ transmission is detected, Ly$β$ spikes are present which has led to claims that the gas along this trough must be ionized. Using high resolution cosmological radiative transfer simulations in large volumes, we show that in a scenario where reionization ends late ($z \sim 5.2$), our simulations can reproduce troughs as long as observed. In this model, we find that the troughs are caused by islands of neutral hydrogen. Small i…
Reionization-era galaxies tend to exhibit weak Ly$α$ emission, likely reflecting attenuation from an increasingly neutral IGM. Recent observations have begun to reveal exceptions to this picture, with strong Ly$α$ emission now known in four of the most massive z=7$-$9 galaxies in the CANDELS fields, all of which also exhibit intense [OIII]$+$H$β$ emission (EW$>$800 $\mathrm{\mathring{A}}$). To better understand why Ly$α$ is anonymously strong in a subset of massive z$\simeq$7$-$9 galaxies, we have initiated an MMT/Binospec survey targeting a larger sample (N=22) of similarly luminous ($\simeq$…
Upcoming galaxy surveys and 21-cm experiments targeting high redshifts $z\gtrsim 6$ are highly complementary probes of galaxy formation and reionization. However, in order to expedite the large volume simulations relevant for 21-cm observations, many models of galaxies within reionization codes are entirely subgrid and/or rely on halo abundances only. In this work, we explore the extent to which resolving and modeling individual galaxy formation histories affects predictions both for the galaxy populations detectable by upcoming surveys and the signatures of reionization accessible to upcoming…

Cosmic Dawn II (CoDa II) is a new, fully-coupled radiation-hydrodynamics simulation of cosmic reionization and galaxy formation and their mutual impact, to redshift $z < 6$. With $4096^3$ particles and cells in a 94 Mpc box, it is large enough to model global reionization and its feedback on galaxy formation while resolving all haloes above $10^8$ M$_{\odot}$. Using the same hybrid CPU-GPU code RAMSES-CUDATON as CoDa I in Ocvirk et al. (2016), CoDa II modified and re-calibrated the subgrid star-formation algorithm, making reionization end earlier, at $z \gtrsim 6$, thereby better matching the …

We report the identification of radio (0.144-3 GHz), mid-IR, far-IR, and sub-mm (24-850$μ$m) emission at the position of one of 41 UV-bright (M$_\mathrm{UV}^{}\lesssim-21.25$) $z\simeq6.6-6.9$ Lyman-break galaxy candidates in the 1.5 deg$^2$ COSMOS field. This source, COS-87259, exhibits a sharp flux discontinuity (factor $>$3) between two narrow/intermediate bands at 9450 and 9700 Angstroms and is undetected in all nine bands blueward of 9600 Angstroms, as expected from a Lyman-alpha break at $z\simeq6.8$. The full multi-wavelength (X-ray through radio) data of COS-87529 can be self-consisten…

We explore the expected galaxy environments of CIV absorbers at z>5 using the Technicolor Dawn simulations. These simulations reproduce the observed history of reionization, the z~6 galaxy stellar mass function, the Ly$α$ forest transmission at z>5, and the SiIV column density distribution (CDD) at z~5.5. Nonetheless, the CIV CDD remains underproduced. Comparison with observed CII/SiII equivalent width ratios and the CII line incidence suggests that a low carbon yield accounts for some, but not all, of the CIV discrepancy. Alternatively, a density-bounded escape scenario could harden the metag…
Using the CoDa II simulation, we study the Ly$α$ transmissivity of the intergalactic medium (IGM) during reionization. At $z>6$, a typical galaxy without an active galactic nucleus fails to form a proximity zone around itself due to the overdensity of the surrounding IGM. The gravitational infall motion in the IGM makes the resonance absorption extend to the red side of Ly$α$, suppressing the transmission up to roughly the circular velocity of the galaxy. In some sight lines, an optically thin blob generated by a supernova in a neighboring galaxy results in a peak feature, which can be mistake…
Our understanding of reionization has advanced considerably over the past decade, with several results now demonstrating that the IGM transitioned from substantially neutral at $z=7$ to largely reionized at $z=6$. However, little remains known about the sizes of ionized bubbles at $z\gtrsim7$ as well as the galaxy overdensities which drive their growth. Fortunately, rest-UV spectroscopic observations offer a pathway towards characterizing these ionized bubbles thanks to the resonant nature of Lyman-alpha photons. In a previous work, we presented Ly$α$ detections from three closely-separated Ly…
