We explore the expected galaxy environments of CIV absorbers at z>5 using the Technicolor Dawn simulations. These simulations reproduce the observed history of reionization, the z~6 galaxy stellar mass function, the Ly$α$ forest transmission at z>5, and the SiIV column density distribution (CDD) at z~5.5. Nonetheless, the CIV CDD remains underproduced. Comparison with observed CII/SiII equivalent width ratios and the CII line incidence suggests that a low carbon yield accounts for some, but not all, of the CIV discrepancy. Alternatively, a density-bounded escape scenario could harden the metagalactic ionizing background more dramatically even than binary stellar evolution, boosting the CIV CDD into near-agreement with observations. In this case galaxies ionize more efficiently and fewer are required to host a given high-ionization absorber. Absorbers' environments therefore constrain ionizing escape. Regardless of the escape scenario, galaxies correlate with CIV absorbers out to 300 proper kpc (pkpc). The correlation strengthens independently with galaxy luminosity and CIV column density. Around strong systems (log(N$_{\rm CIV}$/cm$^{-2}$)>14)), the overdensity of galaxies with M$_{\rm UV}$<-18 or log($L_{{\rm Ly}α}$/erg s$^{-1}$) > 41.9 declines from 200-300 within 100 pkpc to 40-60 within 250 pkpc. The previously-suggested association between strong CIV absorbers and Ly$α$ emitters at z>5 is not expected. It may arise if both populations inhabit large-scale voids, but for different reasons. Although most neighboring galaxies are too faint for HST, JWST will, with a single pointing, identify ~10 neighboring galaxies per strong CIV absorber at z > 5. Ground-based tests of these predictions are possible via deep surveys for Ly$α$ emission using integral field units.
Studies of QSO absorber-galaxy connections are often hindered by inadequate information on whether faint/dwarf galaxies are located near the QSO sight lines. To investigate the contribution of faint galaxies to QSO absorber populations, we are conducting a deep galaxy redshift survey near low-z C IV absorbers. Here we report a blindly-detected C IV absorption system (z(abs) = 0.00348) in the spectrum of PG1148+549 that appears to be associated either with an edge-on dwarf galaxy with an obvious disk (UGC 6894, z(gal) = 0.00283) at an impact parameter of rho = 190 kpc or with a very faint dwarf…
Studying the stellar mass, age, luminosity, star-formation rate, and impact parameter of quasar absorber host galaxies can aid in the understanding of galaxy formation and evolution as well as in testing their models. We derive the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) and impact parameter limits of low redshift ($z_{abs} = 0.37 - 0.55$) Mg II absorbers and of higher redshift ($z_{abs} = 1.0 - 2.5$) 2175 Å dust absorbers (2DAs). We use an imaging stacking technique to statistically boost the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) to increase detection of the absorber host galaxies. The point spread function…
We present a new method to study the contribution of faint sources to the UV background using the 1D correlation of metal absorbers with the intergalactic medium (IGM) transmission in a Quasi Stellar Object (QSO) sightline. We take advantage of a sample of $25$ high signal-to-noise ratio QSO spectra to retrieve $150$ triply-ionised carbon (\cfour) absorbers at $4.5\lesssim z\lesssim 6.2$, of which $37$ systems whose expected H{~\small I} absorption lie in the Lyman-$α$ forest. We derive improved constraints on the cosmic density of \cfour \,at $4.3< z < 6.2$ and infer from abundance-matching t…
From a sample of 109 candidate Ultra-Strong Mg II (USMgII; having rest equivalent width of Mg II absorption, $W_{2796}>3.0$ Angstrom) systems at z=0.4-0.6, we confirm 27 and identify host galaxies of 20 systems based on associated nebular line emission from our SALT observations or from SDSS fiber spectra. The measured impact parameter, [O II] luminosity, star formation rate, B-band luminosity and stellar mass are in the ranges $7.3\le D[kpc]\le79$, $0.2\le L_{[O II]}[ 10^{41}~erg s^{-1}]$ $\le 4.5$, $2.59\le SFR[M_\odot yr^{-1} ]\le 33.51$, $0.15L_B^*\le L_B\le1.63L_B^*$ and $10.21\le log[M_*…

A growing population of metal absorbers are observed at z>5, many showing strong evolution in incidence approaching the epoch of hydrogen reionization. Follow-up surveys examining fields around these metals have resulted in galaxy detections but the direct physical relationship between the detected galaxies and absorbers is unclear. Upcoming observations will illuminate this galaxy-absorber relationship, but the theoretical framework for interpreting these observations is lacking. To inform future z>5 studies, we define the expected relationship between metals and galaxies using the Technicolo…
We report the first detection of the host galaxy of a strong 2175 Å$ $ dust absorber at z = 2.12 towards the background quasar SDSS J121143.42+083349.7 using HST/WFC3 IR F140W direct imaging and G141 grism spectroscopy. The spectroscopically confirmed host galaxy is located at a small impact parameter of ~ 5.5 kpc (~ 0.65$''$). The F140W image reveals a disk-like morphology with an effective radius of 2.24 $\pm$ 0.08 kpc. The extracted 1D spectrum is dominated by a continuum with weak emission lines ([O\III] and [O\II]). The [O\III]-based unobscured star formation rate (SFR) is 9.4 $\pm$ 2.6 M…
Using Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph observations of 89 QSO sightlines through the Sloan Digital Sky Survey footprint, we study the relationships between C IV absorption systems and the properties of nearby galaxies as well as large-scale environment. To maintain sensitivity to very faint galaxies, we restrict our sample to 0.0015 < z < 0.015, which defines a complete galaxy survey to L > 0.01 L* or stellar mass log M_* > 8 Msun. We report two principal findings. First, for galaxies with impact parameter rho < 1 rvir, C IV detection strongly depends on the luminosity/stella…
We present 13 new 2175 Å dust absorbers at z_abs = 1.0 - 2.2 towards background quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. These absorbers are examined in detail using data from the Echelle Spectrograph and Imager (ESI) on the Keck II telescope. Many low-ionization lines including Fe II, Zn II, Mg II, Si II, Al II, Ni II, Mn II, Cr II, Ti II, and Ca II are present in the same absorber which gives rise to the 2175 Å bump. The relative metal abundances (with respect to Zn) demonstrate that the depletion patterns of our 2175 Å dust absorbers resemble that of the Milky Way clouds although some are…
To investigate the evolution of metal-enriched gas over recent cosmic epochs as well as to characterize the diffuse, ionized, metal-enriched circumgalactic medium (CGM), we have conducted a blind survey for C IV absorption systems in 89 QSO sightlines observed with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS). We have identified 42 absorbers at z < 0.16, comprising the largest uniform blind sample size to date in this redshift range. Our measurements indicate an increasing C IV absorber number density per comoving path length (dN/dX = 7.5 +/- 1.1) and modestly increasing …
Gas surrounding high redshift galaxies has been studied through observations of absorption line systems toward background quasars for decades. However, it has proven difficult to identify and characterize the galaxies associated with these absorbers due to the intrinsic faintness of the galaxies compared to the quasars at optical wavelengths. Utilizing the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array, we report on detections of [CII] 158 micron line and dust continuum emission from two galaxies associated with two such absorbers at a redshift of z~4. Our results indicate that the hosts of thes…
We report Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph far-ultraviolet and Arecibo Telescope H{\sc i} 21cm spectroscopic studies of six damped and sub-damped Lyman-$α$ absorbers (DLAs and sub-DLAs, respectively) at $z \lesssim 0.1$, that have yielded estimates of their H{\sc i} column density, metallicity and atomic gas mass. This significantly increases the number of DLAs with gas mass estimates, allowing the first comparison between the gas masses of DLAs and local galaxies. Including three absorbers from the literature, we obtain H{\sc i} masses $\approx (0.24 - 5.2) \times 10^9 \: {\…
As of October 2021 (Period 108), the European Southern Observatory (ESO) offers a new mode of the ESPRESSO spectrograph designed to use the High Resolution grating with 4x2 binning (spatial by spectral; HR42 mode) with the specific objective of observing faint targets with a single Unit Telescope at Paranal. We validated the new HR42 mode using four hours of on-target observations of the quasar J0003-2603, known to host an intervening metal-poor absorber along the line of sight. The capabilities of the ESPRESSO HR42 mode (resolving power R~137 000) were evaluated by comparing to a UVES spectru…
We present a survey for neutral atomic-carbon (CI) along gamma-ray burst (GRB) sightlines, which probes the shielded neutral gas-phase in the interstellar medium (ISM) of GRB host galaxies at high redshift. We compile a sample of 29 medium- to high-resolution GRB optical afterglow spectra spanning a redshift range through most of cosmic time from $1 < z < 6$. We find that seven ($\approx 25\%$) of the GRBs entering our statistical sample have CI detected in absorption. It is evident that there is a strong excess of cold gas in GRB hosts compared to absorbers in quasar sightlines. We investigat…
Quasar lines of sight intersect intervening galaxy discs or circum-galactic environments at random impact parameters and potential well depths. Absorption line velocity widths ($Δv_{90}$) are known to scale with host galaxy stellar masses, and inversely with the projected separation from the quasar line of sight. Its dependence on stellar mass can be eliminated by normalising with the emission-line widths of the host galaxies, $σ_{em}$, so that absorbers with a range of $Δv_{90}$ values can be compared directly. Using a sample of DLA systems at 0.2 < z < 3.2 with spectroscopically confirmed ho…

We present the results from the search for Lyman Alpha emitters (LAEs) in the proximity of 11 CIV absorption systems at $z > 4.7$ in the spectrum of the QSO J1030+0524, using data from MUSE. We have found multiple LAE candidates close to four CIV systems at $z_{CIV} = 4.94$-5.74 with log$_{10}$(N CIV[cm$^{-2}$])$ > 13.5.$ At z = 5-6, CIV systems with W0(CIV) $> 0.2$ Å seem more likely to have galaxies with Ly$α$ emission within $ρ< 200$ proper kpc (4/5 cases), than the CIV systems with W0(CIV)$ < 0.2$ Å (0/6 cases). The impact parameter of LAE-CIV systems with equivalent widths W0(CIV)$ > 0.5 …
We present the two-point cross-correlation function between Lyman $α$ absorbers and HI galaxies in the nearby Universe ($0.01 \le z \le 0.057$). We use absorbers from 21 QSO sightlines from the Survey of the Low-Redshift Intergalactic Medium with HST/COS and the galaxy catalogs from the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA survey and the New York University Value-Added Galaxy Catalog. We find that Lyman $α$ absorbers are strongly correlated to Lyman $α$ galaxies at a projected separation of $\le$0.5 Mpc and velocity separation of $\le 50~km~s^{-1}$. Lyman $α$ absorbers are 7.6 times more likely to be foun…
This paper reports the discovery of spatially-extended line-emitting nebula, reaching to ~100 physical kpc (pkpc) from a damped Lyα absorber (DLA) at z_DLA=0.313 along the sightline toward QSO PKS1127-145 (z_QSO=1.188). This DLA was known to be associated with a galaxy group of dynamical mass M_group ~3e12 M_sun, but its physical origin remained ambiguous. New wide-field integral field observations revealed a giant nebula detected in [OII], Hβ, [OIII], Hα, and [NII] emission, with the line-emitting gas following closely the motions of group galaxies. One of the denser streams passes directly i…
We present a catalogue of local ($z<0.1$) galaxies that contain faint AGN. We select these objects by identifying galaxies that exhibit a significant excess in their radio luminosities, compared to what is expected from the observed levels of star-formation activity in these systems. This is achieved by comparing the optical (spectroscopic) star formation rate (SFR) to the 1.4~GHz luminosity measured from the FIRST survey. The majority of the AGN identified in this study are fainter than those in previous work, such as in the Best and Heckman (2012) catalogue. We show that these faint AGN make…
We report the detections of molecular hydrogen (H$_2$), vibrationally-excited H$_2$ (H$^*_2$), and neutral atomic carbon (CI), in two new afterglow spectra of GRBs\,181020A ($z=2.938$) and 190114A ($z=3.376$), observed with X-shooter at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). Both host-galaxy absorption systems are characterized by strong damped Lyman-$α$ absorbers (DLAs) and substantial amounts of molecular hydrogen with $\log N$(HI, H$_2$) = $22.20\pm 0.05,~20.40\pm 0.04$ (GRB\,181020A) and $\log N$(HI, H$_2$) = $22.15\pm 0.05,~19.44\pm 0.04$ (GRB\,190114A). The DLA metallicites, depletion levels an…

We present a study of strong intervening absorption systems in the near-IR spectra of 31 luminous quasars at $z>5.7$. The quasar spectra were obtained with {\it Gemini} GNIRS that provide continuous wavelength coverage from $\sim$0.9 to $\sim$2.5 $μ$m. We detect 32 strong Mg II doublet absorbers with rest-frame equivalent width $W_r$ ($\lambda2796$) $>1.0$ Åat $2.2 < z < 6.0$. Each Mg II absorber is confirmed by at least two associated Fe II absorption lines in the rest-frame wavelength range of $\sim 1600-2600$ Å. We find that the comoving line density ($dN/dX$) of the strong Fe II-bearing Mg…

Using galaxies as background light sources to map the Lya absorption lines is a novel approach to study Damped Lya Absorbers (DLAs). We report the discovery of an intervening z = 3.335 +- 0.007 DLA along a galaxy sight-line identified among 80 Lyman Break Galaxy (LBG) spectra obtained with our Very Large Telescope/Visible Multi-Object Spectrograph survey in the SSA22 field. The measured DLA neutral hydrogen (HI) column density is log (NHI/cm^{-2}) = 21.68 +- 0.17. The DLA covering fraction over the extended background LBG is > 70% (2 sigma), yielding a conservative constraint on the DLA area o…
Type 2 active galactic nuclei (AGN) represent the majority of the AGN population. However, due to the difficulties in measuring their black hole (BH) masses, it is still unknown whether they follow the same BH mass-host galaxy scaling relations valid for quiescent galaxies and type 1 AGN. Here we present the locus of type 2 AGN having virial BH mass estimates in the $M_{BH}-σ_\star$ plane. Our analysis shows that the BH masses of type 2 AGN are $\sim0.9$ dex smaller than type 1 AGN at $σ_\star\sim 185$ km s$^{-1}$, regardless of the (early/late) AGN host galaxy morphology. Equivalently, type 2…
Depletion studies provide a way to understand the chemical composition of interstellar dust grains. We here examine 23 gamma-ray bursts (GRB) optical afterglow spectra (spanning 0.6<z<5.0) and compare their silicon and iron dust-phase column densities with different extinction curve parameters to study the composition of the interstellar dust grains in these high-redshift GRB host galaxies. The majority of our sample (87%) show featureless extinction curves and only vary in shape. We observe strong correlations (with >96% significance) between the total-to-selective extinction, R_V, and the du…
We present FIRE/Gizmo hydrodynamic zoom-in simulations of isolated dark matter halos, two each at the mass of classical dwarf galaxies ($M_{\rm vir} \simeq 10^{10} M_{\odot}$) and ultra-faint galaxies ($M_{\rm vir} \simeq 10^9 M_{\odot}$), and with two feedback implementations. The resultant central galaxies lie on an extrapolated abundance matching relation from $M_{\star} \simeq 10^6$ to $10^4 M_{\odot}$ without a break. Every host is filled with subhalos, many of which form stars. Our dwarfs with $M_{\star} \simeq 10^6 M_{\odot}$ each have 1-2 well-resolved satellites with $M_{\star} = 3-20…
We performed multi-band deep imaging of the field around GRB 050730 to identify the host galaxies of intervening absorbers, which consist of a damped Lyα absorption (DLA) system at zabs=3.564, a sub-DLA system at zabs=3.022, and strong MgII absorption systems at zabs=1.773 and 2.253. Our observations were performed after the gamma-ray burst afterglow had disappeared. Thus, our imaging survey has a higher sensitivity to the host galaxies of the intervening absorbers than the normal imaging surveys in the direction of QSOs, for which the QSO glare tends to hide the foreground galaxies. In this d…
Recent deep surveys have unravelled a population of faint active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the high redshift Universe, leading to various discussions on their nature and their role during the Epoch of Reionization. We use cosmological radiation-hydrodynamics simulations of a bright galaxy at z = 6 ($M_\star \gtrsim 10^{10} M_\odot$) hosting an actively growing super-massive black hole to study the properties of these objects. In particular, we study how the black hole and the galaxy co-evolve and what is the relative contribution of the AGN and of the stellar populations to the luminosity budge…
The goal of this work is to understand whether the extreme environment of compact groups can affect the distribution and abundance of faint galaxies around them. We performed an analysis of the faint galaxy population in the vicinity of compact groups and normal groups. We built a light-cone mock galaxy catalogue constructed from the Millennium Run Simulation II plus a semi-analytical model of galaxy formation. We identified a sample of compact groups in the mock catalogue as well as a control sample of normal galaxy groups and computed the projected number density profiles of faint galaxies a…
Observations of globular clusters in dwarf galaxies can be used to study a variety of topics, including the structure of dark matter halos and the history of vigorous star formation in low-mass galaxies. We report on the properties of the faint globular cluster (M_V ~ -3.4) in the M31 dwarf galaxy Andromeda I. This object adds to the growing population of low-luminosity Local Group galaxies that host single globular clusters.
To study environmental effects on the circumgalactic medium (CGM), we use the samples of redMaPPer galaxy clusters, background quasars and cluster galaxies from the SDSS. With ~82 000 quasar spectra, we detect 197 MgII absorbers in and around the clusters. The detection rate per quasar is 2.7$\pm$0.7 times higher inside the clusters than outside the clusters, indicating that MgII absorbers are relatively abundant in clusters. However, when considering the galaxy number density, the absorber-to-galaxy ratio is rather low inside the clusters. If we assume that MgII absorbers are mainly contribut…
We present joint constraints on the distribution of MgII absorption around galaxies, by combining the MgII absorption seen in stacked background galaxy spectra and the distribution of host galaxies of strong MgII systems from the spectra of background quasars. We present a suite of models that predict, the dependence of MgII absorption on a galaxy's apparent inclination, impact parameter(b) and azimuthal angle. The variations in the absorption strength with azimuthal angles provide much stronger constraints on the intrinsic geometry of the MgII absorption than the dependence on the galaxy's in…
Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) Galaxies are an important type of active galactic nucleus (AGN), generally expected to be accreting at high Eddington rate. The properties of their outflows and importance of AGN feedback remain intriguing. We report on the discovery of fast outflowing warm absorbers (WAs) in the NLS1 PG 1001+054, with velocities in the range of 7000 to 9000 kilometers per second. They are identified with blueshifted Lyman alpha, N v and Si iv lines in the high resolution ultraviolet (UV) spectra taken with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (H…
We study the structural properties of Low Surface Brightness galaxies (LSB) using a sample of 263 galaxies observed by the Green Bank Telescope (Schneider et al 1992). We perform 2D decompositions of these galaxies in the SDSS $g$, $r$ and $i$ bands using the GALFIT software. Our decomposition reveals that about $60\%$ of these galaxies are bulgeless i.e., their light distributions are well modelled by pure exponential disks. The rest of the galaxies were fitted with two components: a Sersic bulge and an exponential disk. Most of these galaxies have bulge-to-total (B/T) ratio less than 0.1. Ho…
We use deep high resolution \textit{HST/ACS} imaging of two fields in the core of the Coma cluster to investigate the occurrence of nuclear star clusters (NSCs) in quiescent dwarf galaxies as faint as $M_{I} = -10$ mag. We employ a hierarchical Bayesian logistic regression framework to model the faint end of the nucleation fraction ($f_{n}$) as a function of both galaxy luminosity and environment. We find that $f_n$ is remarkably high in Coma: at $M_{I} \approx -13$ mag half of the cluster dwarfs still host prominent NSCs. Comparison with dwarf systems in nearby clusters and groups shows that,…
We use state-of-the-art cosmological zoom simulations to explore the distribution of neutral gas in and around galaxies that gives rise to high column density \ion{H}{i} \mbox{Ly-$α$} absorption (formally, sub-DLAs and DLAs) in the spectra of background quasars. Previous cosmological hydrodynamic simulations under-predict the mean projected separations $(b)$ of these absorbers relative to the host, and invoke selection effects to bridge the gap with observations. On the other hand, single lines of sight (LOS) in absorption cannot uniquely constrain the galactic origin. Our simulations match al…
We present ALMA band-7 data of the [CII] $\lambda157.74\,μ{\rm m}$ emission line and underlying far-infrared (FIR) continuum for twelve luminous quasars at $z \simeq 4.8$, powered by fast-growing supermassive black holes (SMBHs). Our total sample consists of eighteen quasars, twelve of which are presented here for the first time. The new sources consists of six Herschel/SPIRE detected systems, which we define as "FIR-bright" sources, and six Herschel/SPIRE undetected systems, which we define as "FIR-faint" sources. We determine dust masses for the quasars hosts of $M_{dust} \le 0.2-25.0\times …
We probe the high-ionization circumgalactic medium by examining absorber kinematics, absorber-galaxy kinematics, and average absorption profiles of 31 OVI absorbers from the "Multiphase Galaxy Halos" Survey as a function of halo mass, redshift, inclination, and azimuthal angle. The galaxies are isolated at $0.12<z_{\rm gal}<0.66$ and are probed by a background quasar within $D\approx 200$ kpc. Each absorber-galaxy pair has Hubble Space Telescope images and COS quasar spectra, and most galaxy redshifts have been accurately measured from Keck/ESI spectra. Using the pixel-velocity two-point corre…

Absorption-selected galaxies offer an effective way to study low-mass galaxies at high redshift. However, the physical properties of the underlying galaxy population remains uncertain. In particular, the multiphase circum-galactic medium is thought to hold key information on gas flows into and out of galaxies that are vital for galaxy evolution models. Here we present ALMA observations of CO molecular gas in host galaxies of H_2-bearing absorbers. In our sample of six absorbers we detect molecular gas-rich galaxies in five absorber fields although we did not target high-metallicity (>50 per ce…
We combine 126 new galaxy-O VI absorber pairs from the CGM$^2$ survey with 123 pairs drawn from the literature to examine the simultaneous dependence of the column density of O VI absorbers ($N_{\rm O VI}$) on galaxy stellar mass, star formation rate, and impact parameter. The combined sample consists of 249 galaxy-O VI absorber pairs covering $z=0$-$0.6$, with host galaxy stellar masses $M^*=10^{7.8}$-$10^{11.2}$ $M_\odot$ and galaxy-absorber impact parameters $R_\perp=0$-$400$ proper kiloparsecs. In this work, we focus on the variation of $N_{\rm O VI}$ with galaxy mass and impact parameter …
Within $Λ$CDM, dwarf galaxies like the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) are expected to host numerous dark matter subhalos, several of which should host faint dwarf companions. Recent Gaia proper motions confirm new members of the LMC-system in addition to the previously known SMC, including two classical dwarf galaxies ($M_\ast$ > $10^5$ M$_{\odot}$; Carina and Fornax) as well as several ultra-faint dwarfs (Car2, Car3, Hor1, and Hyd1). We use the Feedback In Realistic Environments (FIRE) simulations to study the dark and luminous (down to ultrafaint masses, $M_\ast$ ~ $6\times10^3$ M$_{\odot}$) s…
We present deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging at the locations of four, potentially hostless, long-faded Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) in low-redshift, rich galaxy clusters that were identified in the Multi-Epoch Nearby Cluster Survey. Assuming a steep faint-end slope for the galaxy cluster luminosity function ($α_d=-1.5$), our data includes all but $\lesssim0.2\%$ percent of the stellar mass in cluster galaxies ($\lesssim0.005\%$ with $α_d=-1.0$), a factor of 10 better than our ground-based imaging. Two of the four SNe Ia still have no possible host galaxy associated with them ($M_R>-9.2$), co…
Obtaining a census of active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity across cosmic time is critical to our understanding of galaxy evolution and formation. Many AGN classification techniques are compromised by dust obscuration. However, very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) can be used to identify compact emission that can only be attributed to AGN activity. This is the second in a series of papers dealing with the compact radio population in the GOODS-N field. We review 14 different AGN classification techniques in the context of a VLBI-detected sample, and use these to investigate the nature of th…
The bimodal absorption system imaging campaign (BASIC) aims to characterize the galaxy environments of a sample of 36 HI-selected partial Lyman limit systems (pLLSs) and Lyman limit systems (LLSs) in 23 QSO fields at $z \lesssim 1$. These pLLSs/LLSs provide a unique sample of absorbers with unbiased and well-constrained metallicities, allowing us to explore the origins of metal-rich and low-metallicity circumgalactic medium (CGM) at $z<1$. Here we present Keck/KCWI and VLT/MUSE observations of 11 of these QSO fields (19 pLLSs) that we combine with HST/ACS imaging to identify and characterize t…
Since reionization prevents star formation in most halos below 3 x 10^9 solar masses, dwarf galaxies only populate a fraction of existing dark matter halos. We use hydrodynamic cosmological simulations of the Local Group to study the discriminating factors for galaxy formation in the early Universe and connect them to the present-day properties of galaxies and halos. A combination of selection effects related to reionization, and the subsequent evolution of halos in different environments, introduces strong biases between the population of halos that host dwarf galaxies, and the total halo pop…
We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFC3 UV and near-IR (nIR) imaging of 21 Superluminous Supernovae (SLSNe) host galaxies, providing a sensitive probe of star formation and stellar mass with the hosts. Comparing the photometric and morphological properties of these host galaxies with those of core collapse supernovae (CCSNe) and long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs), we find SLSN hosts are fainter and more compact at both UV and nIR wavelengths, in some cases we barely recover hosts with absolute magnitude around MV ~ -14. With the addition of ground based optical observations and archiv…
The hierarchical galaxy formation scenario in the Cold Dark Matter cosmogony with a non-vanishing cosmological constant and geometrically flat space has been very successful in explaining the large-scale distribution of galaxies. However, there have been claims that the scenario predicts too many satellite galaxies associated with massive galaxies compared to observations, called the missing satellite galaxy problem. Isolated groups of galaxies hosted by passively evolving massive early-type galaxies are ideal laboratories for finding the missing physics in the current theory. Here we report f…
Ultraviolet observations of the QSO 3C 263 (zem = 0.652) with COS and FUSE reveal O VI absorption systems at z = 0.06342 and 0.14072 . WIYN multi-object spectrograph observations provide information about the galaxies associated with the absorbers. The multi-phase system at z = 0.06342 traces cool photoionized gas and warm collisionally ionized gas associated with a L ~ 0.31L* compact spiral emission line galaxy with an impact parameter of 63 kpc. The cool photoionized gas in the absorber is well modeled with log U ~ -2.6, log N(H) ~17.8, log n(H) ~ -3.3 and [Si/H] = -0.14\pm0.23. The collisio…
We present new GALEX images and optical spectroscopy of J1229+02, a dwarf post-starburst galaxy located 81 kpc from the 1585 km/s absorber in the 3C 273 sight line. The absence of Hα emission and the faint GALEX UV fluxes confirm that the galaxy's recent star formation rate is $<10^{-3} M_{\odot}$/yr. Absorption-line strengths and the UV-optical SED give similar estimates of the acceptable model parameters for its youngest stellar population where $f_m$ < 60% of its total stars (by mass) formed in a burst $t_sb$ = 0.7-3.4 Gyr ago with a stellar metallicity of -1.7 < [Fe/H] < +0.2; we also esti…
