In this paper we prove that the time dependent solutions of a large class of Smoluchowski coagulation equations for multicomponent systems concentrate along a particular direction of the space of cluster compositions for long times. The direction of concentration is determined by the initial distribution of clusters. These results allow to prove the uniqueness and global stability of the self-similar profile with finite mass in the case of coagulation kernels which are not identically constant, but are constant along any direction of the space of cluster compositions.
We study multicomponent coagulation via the Smoluchowski coagulation equation under non-equilibrium stationary conditions induced by a source of small clusters. The coagulation kernel can be very general, merely satisfying certain power law asymptotic bounds in terms of the total number of monomers in a cluster. The bounds are characterized by two parameters and we extend previous results for one-component systems to classify the parameter values for which the above stationary solutions do or do not exist. Moreover, we also obtain criteria for the existence or non-existence of solutions which …
Uniqueness of mass-conserving self-similar solutions to Smoluchowski's coagulation equation is shown when the coagulation kernel $K$ is given by $K(x,x\_*)=2(x x\_*)^{-α}$, $(x,x\_*)\in (0,\infty)^2$, for some $α>0$.
We consider the multicomponent Smoluchowski coagulation equation under non-equilibrium conditions induced either by a source term or via a constant flux constraint. We prove that the corresponding stationary non-equilibrium solutions have a universal localization property. More precisely, we show that these solutions asymptotically localize into a direction determined by the source or by a flux constraint: the ratio between monomers of a given type to the total number of monomers in the cluster becomes ever closer to a predetermined ratio as the cluster size is increased. The assumptions on th…
Existence of mass-conserving weak solutions to the coagulation-fragmentation equation is established when the fragmentation mechanism produces an infinite number of fragments after splitting. The coagulation kernel is assumed to increase at most linearly for large sizes and no assumption is made on the growth of the overall fragmentation rate for large sizes. However, they are both required to vanish for small sizes at a rate which is prescribed by the (non-integrable) singularity of the fragment distribution.
A specific class of coagulation and fragmentation coefficients is considered for which the strength of the coagulation is balanced by that of the multiple fragmentation. Existence and uniqueness of mass-conserving solutions are proved when the initial total mass is sufficiently small.
Existence of mass-conserving self-similar solutions with a sufficiently small total mass is proved for a specific class of homogeneous coagulation and fragmentation coefficients. The proof combines a dynamical approach to construct such solutions for a regularised coagulation-fragmentation equation in scaling variables and a compactness method.
Existence of global weak solutions to the continuous Oort-Hulst-Safronov (OHS) coagulation equation is investigated for coagulation kernels capturing a singularity near zero and growing linearly at infinity. The proof mainly relies on a relation, between classical Smoluchowski coagulation equation (SCE) and OHS coagulation equation, which is introduced in [16] as generalized coagulation equation. Moreover, all weak solutions formulated in a suitable sense are demonstrated to be mass-conserving. We obtain here a similar result for OHS coagulation equation as the one in [6] for SCE.
In general, the non-conservative approximation of coagulation-fragmentation equations (CFEs) may lead to the occurrence of gelation phenomenon. In this article, it is shown that the non-conservative approximation of CFEs can also provide the existence of mass conserving solutions to CFEs for large classes of unbounded coagulation and fragmentation kernels.
In this article, the existence of mass-conserving solutions is investigated to the continuous coagulation and collisional breakage equation with singular coagulation kernels. Here, the probability distribution function attains singularity near the origin. The existence result is constructed by using both conservative and non-conservative truncations to the continuous coagulation and collisional breakage equation. The proof of the existence result relies on a classical weak L1 compactness method.
The critical coagulation-fragmentation equation with multiplicative coagulation and constant fragmentation kernels is known to not have global mass-conserving solutions when the initial mass is greater than $1$. We show that for any given positive initial mass with finite second moment, there is a time $T^*>0$ such that the equation possesses a unique mass-conserving solution up to $T^*$. The novel idea is to singularly perturb the constant fragmentation kernel by small additive terms and study the limiting behavior of the solutions of the perturbed system via the Bernstein transform.
Global weak solutions to the continuous Smoluchowski coagulation equation (SCE) are constructed for coagulation kernels featuring an algebraic singularity for small volumes and growing linearly for large volumes, thereby extending previous results obtained in Norris (1999) and Cueto Camejo \& Warnecke (2015). In particular, linear growth at infinity of the coagulation kernel is included and the initial condition may have an infinite second moment. Furthermore, all weak solutions (in a suitable sense) including the ones constructed herein are shown to be mass-conserving, a property which was pr…
In this paper we study the continuous coagulation and multiple fragmentation equation for the mean-field description of a system of particles taking into account the combined effect of the coagulation and the fragmentation processes in which a system of particles growing by successive mergers to form a bigger one and a larger particle splits into a finite number of smaller pieces. We demonstrate the global existence of mass-conserving weak solutions for a wide class of coagulation rate, selection rate and breakage function. Here, both the breakage function and the coagulation rate may have alg…
The article presents the existence and mass conservation of solution for the discrete Safronov-Dubovski coagulation equation for the product coalescence coefficients $ϕ$ such that $ϕ_{i,j} \leq ij$ $\forall$ $i,j \in \mathbb{N}$. Both conservative and non-conservative truncated systems are used to analyse the infinite system of ODEs. In the conservative case, Helly's selection theorem is used to prove the global existence while for the non-conservative part, we make use of the refined version of De la Vallée-Poussin theorem to establish the existence. Further, it is shown that these solutions …
Existence and uniqueness of mass-conserving classical solutions to the continuous coagulation equation with collisional breakage are investigated for an unbounded class of collision kernels and a particular case of the distribution function. The distribution function may have a possibility to attain singularity at the origin. The proof of the existence result relies on the compactness method. Moreover, a uniqueness result is shown. In addition, it is observed that the uniqueness solution is mass-conserving.
The present paper deals with the existence and uniqueness of global classical solutions to the continuous coagulation and nonlinear multiple fragmentation equations for large classes of unbounded coagulation, collision and breakup kernels. In addition, it is shown that solutions are mass conserving. The coagulation and breakup kernels may have singularities on both the co-ordinate axes whereas the collision kernel grows up to bilinearity.
The possible occurrence of instantaneous gelation to Oort-Hulst-Safronov (OHS) coagulation equation is investigated for a certain class of unbounded coagulation kernels. The existence of instantaneous gelation is confirmed by showing the nonexistence of mass-conserving weak solutions. Finally, it is shown that for such kernels, there is no weak solution to the OHS coagulation equation at any time interval.
The global existence of mass-conserving weak solutions to the Safronov-Dubovskii coagulation equation is shown for the coagulation kernels satisfying the at most linear growth for large sizes. In contrast to previous works, the proof mainly relies on the de la Vallee-Poussin theorem [8, Theorem 7.1.6], which only requires the finiteness of the first moment of the initial condition. By showing the necessary regularity of solutions, it is shown that the weak solutions con-structed herein are indeed classical solutions. Under additional restrictions on the initial data, the uniqueness of solution…
We study a critical case of Coagulation-Fragmentation equations with multiplicative coagulation kernel and constant fragmentation kernel. Our method is based on the study of viscosity solutions to a new singular Hamilton-Jacobi equation, which results from applying the Bernstein transform to the original Coagulation-Fragmentation equation. Our results include wellposedness, regularity and long-time behaviors of viscosity solutions to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in certain regimes, which have implications to wellposedness and long-time behaviors of \emph{mass-conserving} solutions to the Coagu…
We consider mass-conserving self-similar solutions of Smoluchowski's coagulation equation with multiplicative kernel of homogeneity $2lλ\in (0,1)$. We establish rigorously that such solutions exhibit a singular behavior of the form $x^{-(1+2λ)}$ as $x \to 0$. This property had been conjectured, but only weaker results had been available up to now.
We consider mass-conserving self-similar solutions for Smoluchowski's coagulation equation with kernel $K(ξ,η)= (ξη)^λ$ with $λ\in (0,1/2)$. It is known that such self-similar solutions $g(x)$ satisfy that $x^{-1+2λ} g(x)$ is bounded above and below as $x \to 0$. In this paper we describe in detail via formal asymptotics the qualitative behavior of a suitably rescaled function $h(x)=h_λ x^{-1+2λ} g(x)$ in the limit $λ\to 0$. It turns out that $h \sim 1+ C x^{λ/2} \cos(\sqrtλ \log x)$ as $x \to 0$. As $x$ becomes larger $h$ develops peaks of height $1/λ$ that are separated by large regions wher…
The dynamics of a coagulation-fragmentation equation with multiplicative coagulation kernel and critical singular fragmentation is studied. In contrast to the coagulation equation, it is proved that fragmentation prevents the occurrence of the gelation phenomenon and a mass-conserving solution is constructed. The large time behavior of this solution is shown to be described by a self-similar solution. In addition, the second moment is finite for positive times whatever its initial value. The proof relies on the Laplace transform which maps the original equation to a first-order nonlinear hyper…
Existence and uniqueness of weak solutions to the collision-induced breakage and coag-ulation equation are shown when coagulation is the dominant mechanism for small volumes. The collision kernel may feature a stronger singularity for small volumes than the ones considered in previous contributions. In addition, when the collision kernel is locally bounded, the class of fragment daughter distribution functions included in the analysis is broader. Mass-conserving solutions are also constructed when the collision kernel grows at most linearly at infinity and are proved to be unique for initial c…
An existence result on weak solutions to the continuous coagulation equation with collision-induced multiple fragmentation is established for certain classes of unbounded coagulation, collision and breakup kernels. In this model, a pair of particles can coagulate into a larger one if their confrontation is a completely inelastic collision; otherwise, one of them will split into many smaller particles due to a destructive collision. In the present work, both coagulation and fragmentation processes are considered to be intrinsically nonlinear. The breakup kernel may have a possibility to attain …
