Fully general-relativistic binary-neutron-star (BNS) merger simulations with quark-hadron crossover (QHC) equations of state (EOSs) are studied for the first time. In contrast to EOSs with purely hadronic matter or with a first-order quark-hadron phase transition (1PT), in the transition region QHC EOSs show a peak in sound speed, and thus a stiffening. We study the effects of such stiffening in the merger and post-merger gravitational (GW) signals. Through simulations in the binary-mass range $2.5 < M/M_{\odot} < 2.75$, characteristic differences due to different EOSs appear in the frequency of the main peak of the post-merger GW spectrum ($f_2$), extracted through Bayesian inference. In particular, we found that (i) for lower-mass binaries, since the maximum baryon number density ($n_{\rm max}$) after the merger stays below $3\text{--}4$ times the nuclear-matter density ($n_0$), the characteristic stiffening of the QHC models in that density range results in a lower $f_2$ than that computed for the underlying hadronic EOS and thus also than that for EOSs with a 1PT, (ii) for higher-mass binaries, where $n_{\rm max}$ may exceed $4\text{--}5 n_0$ depending on the EOS model, whether $f_2$ in QHC models is higher or lower than that in the underlying hadronic model depends on the height of the sound-speed peak. Comparing the values of $f_2$ for different EOSs and BNS masses gives important clues on how to discriminate different types of quark dynamics in the high-density end of EOSs and is relevant to future kilohertz GW observations with third-generation GW detectors.
We perform the first study of the principal core $g$-mode oscillation in hybrid stars containing quark matter, utilizing a crossover model for the hadron-to-quark transition inspired by lattice QCD. The ensuing results are compared with our recent findings of $g$-mode frequencies in hybrid stars with a first-order phase transition using Gibbs constructions. We find that models using Gibbs construction yield $g$-mode amplitudes and the associated gravitational energy radiated that dominate over those of the chosen crossover model owing to the distinct behaviors of the equilibrium and adiabatic …
As neutron stars merge they can approach very high nuclear density. Here, we summarized recent results for the evolution and gravitational wave emission from binary neutron star mergers using a a variety of nuclear equations of state with and without a crossover transition to quark matter. We discuss how the late time gravitational wave emission from binary neutron star mergers may possibly reveal the existence of a crossover transition to quark matter.
We discuss the hadron--quark crossover accompanied by the formation of Cooper triples (three-body counterpart of Cooper pairs) by analogy with the Bose--Einstein condensate to Bardeen--Cooper--Schrieffer crossover in two-component fermionic systems. Such a crossover is different from a phase transition, which often involves symmetry breaking. We calculate the in-medium three-body energy from the three-body $T$-matrix with a phenomenological three-body force characterizing a bound hadronic state in vacuum. With increasing density, the hadronic bound-state pole smoothly undergoes a crossover tow…
In this contribution, we summarize our recent studies on the chiral invariant mass and the chiral condensates in neutron star matter. We construct a unified equations of state assuming the crossover phase transition from hadronic matter described by a parity doublet model to quark matter by an Nambu--Jona-Lasinio type quark model. We first show that the chiral invariant mass is constrained to be 600 MeV $\lesssim m_0 \lesssim$ 900 MeV from recent observations of neutron stars. We then determine the density dependence of the chiral condensate in the crossover description, and show that the chir…
The quark-hadron crossover conjecture was proposed as a continuity between hadronic matter and quark matter with no phase transition. It is based on matching of symmetry and excitations in both the phases. It connects hyperon matter and color-flavor locked (CFL) phase of color superconductivity in the limit of light strange quark mass. We study generalization of this conjecture in the presence of topological vortices. We propose a picture where hadronic superfluid vortices in hyperon matter could be connected to non-Abelian vortices (color magnetic flux tubes) in the CFL phase during this cros…
We construct a new isentropic equation of state (EOS) at finite temperature "CRover" on the basis of the hadron-quark crossover at high density. By using the new EOS, we study the structure of hot neutron stars at birth with the typical lepton fraction ($Y_l=0.3-0.4$) and the typical entropy per baryon ($S=1-2$). Due to the gradual appearance of quark degrees of freedom at high density, the temperature T and the baryon density at the center of the hot neutron stars with the hadron-quark crossover are found to be smaller than those without the crossover by a factor of 2 or more. Typical energy …
Using the idea of a smooth crossover from the hadronic matter with hyperons to quark matter with strangeness, we show that the maximum mass of neutron stars with quark matter core can be larger than those without quark matter core. This is in contrast to the conventional softening of equation of state due to exotic components at high density. Essential conditions to reach our conclusion are (i) the crossover takes place at relatively low densities, around 3 times the normal nuclear density, and (ii) the quark matter is strongly interacting in the crossover region. By these, the pressure of the…
Merging binaries of neutron stars are not only strong sources of gravitational waves, but also have the potential of revealing states of matter at densities and temperatures not accessible in laboratories. A crucial and long-standing question in this context is whether quarks are deconfined as a result of the dramatic increase in density and temperature following the merger. We present the first fully general-relativistic simulations of merging neutron stars including quarks at finite temperatures that can be switched off consistently in the equation of state. Within our approach, we can deter…
We construct an equation of state (EOS) for neutron stars by interpolating hadronic EOS at low density and quark EOS at high density. A hadronic model based on the parity doublet structure is used for hadronic matter and a quark model of Nambu--Jona-Lasinio type is for quark matter. We assume crossover between hadronic matter and quark matter in the the color-flavor locked phase. The nucleon mass of the parity doublet model has a mass associated with the chiral symmetry breaking, and a chiral invariant mass $m_0$ which is insensitive to the chiral condensate. The value of $m_0$ affects the nuc…

Bulk properties of cold and hot neutron stars (NSs) are studied on the basis of the hadron-quark crossover picture where a smooth transition from the hadronic phase to the quark phase takes place at finite baryon density. By using a phenomenological equation of state (EOS) "CRover" which interpolates the two phases at around 3 times the nuclear matter density, it is found that the cold NSs with the gravitational mass larger than 2-solarmass can be sustained. This is in sharp contrast to the case of the first-order hadron-quark transition. The radii of the cold NSs with the CRover EOS are in th…
On the basis of the percolation picture from the hadronic phase with hyperons to the quark phase with strangeness, we construct a new equation of state (EOS) with the pressure interpolated as a function of the baryon density. The maximum mass of neutron stars can exceed $2M_{\odot}$ if the following two conditions are satisfied; (i) the crossover from the hadronic matter to the quark matter takes place at around three times the normal nuclear matter density, and (ii) the quark matter is strongly interacting in the crossover region and has stiff equation of state. This is in contrast to the con…

We present a much improved equation of state for neutron star matter, QHC19, with a smooth crossover from the hadronic regime at lower densities to the quark regime at higher densities. We now use the Togashi et al.~equation of state (Togashi:2017), a generalization of the Akmal-Pandharipande-Ravenhall equation of state of uniform nuclear matter, in the entire hadronic regime; the Togashi equation of state consistently describes non-uniform as well as uniform matter, and matter at beta equilibrium without the need for an interpolation between pure neutron and symmetric nuclear matter. We descr…
We describe an unambiguous gravitational-wave signature to identify the occurrence of a strong phase transition from hadronic matter to deconfined quark matter in neutron star mergers. Such a phase transition leads to a strong softening of the equation of state and hence to more compact merger remnants compared to purely hadronic models. If a phase transition takes place during merging, this results in a characteristic increase of the dominant postmerger gravitational-wave frequency relative to the tidal deformability characterizing the inspiral phase. By comparing results from different purel…
We analyse the phenomenological implications of the two-families scenario on the merger of compact stars. That scenario is based on the coexistence of both hadronic stars and strange quark stars. After discussing the classification of the possible mergers, we turn to detailed numerical simulations of the merger of two hadronic stars, i.e., "first family" stars in which delta resonances and hyperons are present, and we show results for the threshold mass of such binaries, for the mass dynamically ejected and the mass of the disk surrounding the post-merger object. We compare these results with …
We study the possibility that the transition from hadron matter to quark matter at vanishing temperatures proceeds via crossover, similar to the crossover behavior found with lattice QCD studies at high temperatures. The purpose is to examine astrophysical consequences of this postulate by constructing hybrid star sequences fulfilling current experimental data.
We delineate the properties of dense QCD matter through equations of state constrained by the neutron star observations. The two solar mass constraint, the radius constraint of 11-13 km, and the causality constraint on the speed of sound, are used to develop the picture of hadron-quark continuity in which hadronic matter continuously transforms into quark matter. A unified equation of state at zero temperature and beta-equilibrium is constructed by a phenomenological interpolation between nuclear and quark matter equations of state. For applications to supernovae and neutron star mergers, the …
In this review we highlight a few physical properties of neutron stars and their theoretical treatment inasmuch as they can be useful for nuclear and particle physicists concerned with matter at finite density (and newly, temperature). Conversely, we lay out some of the hadron physics necessary to test General Relativity with binary mergers including at least one neutron star, in view of the event GW170817: neutron stars and their mergers reach the highest matter densities known, offering access to the matter side of Einstein's equations. In addition to minimum introductory material for those …
Multi-messenger observations of binary neutron star mergers provide a unique opportunity to constrain the dense-matter equation of state. Although it is known from quantum chromodynamics that hadronic matter will undergo a phase transition to exotic forms of matter, e.g., quark matter, the onset density of such a phase transition cannot be computed from first principles. Hence, it remains an open question if such phase transitions occur inside isolated neutron stars or during binary neutron star mergers, or if they appear at even higher densities that are not realized in the Cosmos. In this ar…
We study the chiral condensates in neutron star matter from nuclear to quark matter domain. We describe nuclear matter with a parity doublet model (PDM), quark matter with the Nambu--Jona-Lasino (NJL) model, and a matter at the intermediate density by interpolating nuclear and quark matter equations of state. The model parameters are constrained by nuclear physics and neutron star observations. Various condensates in the interpolated domain are estimated from the chemical potential dependence of the condensates at the boundaries of the interpolation. The use of the PDM with substantial chiral …
(abridged) We investigate the quark deconfinement phase transition in the context of binary neutron star (BNS) mergers. We employ a new finite-temperature composition-dependent equation of state (EOS) with a first order phase transition between hadrons and deconfined quarks to perform numerical relativity simulations of BNS mergers. The softening of the EOS due to the phase transition causes the merger remnants to be more compact and to collapse to a black hole (BH) at earlier times. The phase transition is imprinted on the postmerger gravitational wave (GW) signal duration, amplitude, and pea…
A kilonova signal is generally expected after a Black Hole - Neutron Star merger. The strength of the signal is related to the equation of state of neutron star matter and it increases with the stiffness of the latter. The recent results obtained by NICER from the analyses of PSR J0740+6620 suggest a rather stiff equation of state and the expected kilonova signal is therefore strong, at least if the mass of the Black Hole does not exceed $\sim 10 \mathrm{\,M}_\odot$ and if the adimensional spin parameter is not too small and the orbit is prograde. We compare the predictions obtained by conside…
We follow the idea that the QCD phase diagram may be described by a crossover from a hadron resonance gas to perturbative QCD using the switch function ansatz of Albright, Kapusta and Young [1]. While the switch function could be calibrated at vanishing baryon chemical potential with data from lattice QCD simulations, it has been suggested recently by Kapusta and Welle [2] that in the zero temperature limit, the switch function parameter $μ_0$ could be constrained by neutron star phenomenology, in particular by massive pulsars like PSR J0740+6620 with a mass exceeding $2~M_\odot$. In this work…

We identify an observable imprint of a first-order hadron-quark phase transition at supranuclear densities on the gravitational-wave (GW) emission of neutron star mergers. Specifically, we show that the dominant postmerger GW frequency f_peak may exhibit a significant deviation from an empirical relation between f_peak and the tidal deformability if a strong first-order phase transition leads to the formation of a gravitationally stable extended quark matter core in the postmerger remnant. A comparison of the GW signatures from a large, representative sample of microphysical, purely hadronic e…
In the standard picture of cosmology it is predicted that a phase transition, associated with chiral symmetry breaking after the electroweak transition, has occurred at approximately 10 μseconds after the Big Bang to convert a plasma of free quarks and gluons into hadrons. We consider the quark-hadron phase transition in a DGP brane world scenario within an effective model of QCD. We study the evolution of the physical quantities useful for the study of the early universe, namely, the energy density, temperature and the scale factor before, during, and after the phase transition. Also, due to …
We introduce a family of equations of state (EoS) for hybrid neutron star (NS) matter that is obtained by a two-zone parabolic interpolation between a soft hadronic EoS at low densities and a stiff quark matter EoS with color superconductivity at high densities within a finite region of baryonic chemical potentials $μ_B^h < μ_B < μ_B^q$. We consider two scenarios corresponding to a cross-over and a strong first-order transition between quark and hadron phases considered at finite and zero temperatures. This allows us to analyze the effects of finite entropy on the EoS and mass-radius relation …

The gravitational wave signal emitted during the coalescence of two neutron stars carries information about the stars' internal structure. During the long inspiral phase the main matter observable is the tidal interaction between the binary components, an effect that can be parametrically modeled with compact-binary solutions to General Relativity. After the binary merger the main observable is frequency modes of the remnant, most commonly giving rise to a short-duration signal accessible only through numerical simulations. The complicated morphology and the decreasing detector sensitivity in …
Using hydrodynamical simulations for a large set of high-density matter equations of state (EoSs) we systematically determine the threshold mass M_thres for prompt black-hole formation in equal-mass and asymmetric neutron star (NS) mergers. We devise the so far most direct, general and accurate method to determine the unknown maximum mass of nonrotating NSs from merger observations revealing M_thres. Considering hybrid EoSs with hadron-quark phase transition, we identify a new, observable signature of quark matter in NS mergers. Furthermore, our findings have direct applications in gravitation…
With the first detection of gravitational waves from a binary system of neutron stars, GW170817, a new window was opened to study the properties of matter at and above nuclear-saturation density. Reaching densities a few times that of nuclear matter and temperatures up to $100\,\rm{MeV}$, such mergers also represent potential sites for a phase transition (PT) from confined hadronic matter to deconfined quark matter. While the lack of a postmerger signal in GW170817 has prevented us from assessing experimentally this scenario, two theoretical studies have explored the postmerger gravitational-w…
We describe a multi-messenger interpretation of GW170817, which yields a robust lower limit on NS radii. This excludes NSs with radii smaller than about 10.7 km and thus rules out very soft nuclear matter. We stress the potential of this type of constraints when future detections become available. A very similar argumentation may yield an upper bound on the maximum mass of nonrotating NSs. We also discuss simulations of NS mergers, which undergo a first-order phase transition to quark matter. We point out a different dynamical behavior. Considering the gravitational-wave signal, we identify an…
We study the hadron-quark phase transition with the finite size effects at finite temperature. For the hadron phase, we adopt a realistic equation of state in the framework of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory including hyperons. The properties of the mixed phase are clarified by considering the finite size effects under the Gibbs conditions. We find that the equation of state becomes softer than that at zero-temperature for some density region. We also find that the equation of state gets closer to that given by the Maxwell construction. Moreover, the number of hyperons is suppressed by the p…
In the current work an equation of state model with a first-order phase transition for astrophysical applications is presented. The model is based on a two-phase approach for quark-hadron phase transitions, which leads by construction to a first-order phase transition. The resulting model has already been successfully used in several astrophysical applications, such as cold neutron stars, core-collapse supernova explosions and binary neutron star mergers. Main goal of this work is to present the details of the model, discuss certain features and eventually publish it in a tabulated form for fu…
We compute a new equation of state table including Bose-Einstein condensate of $K^{-}$ mesons for core collapse supernova and neutron star merger simulations. Nuclei and interacting nucleons in non-uniform matter is described in an extended version of the nuclear statistical equilibrium model including excluded volume effects whereas the uniform matter at higher densities is treated in the relativistic hadron field theory with density dependent couplings. The equation of state table is generated for a wide range of density ($10^{-12}$ to $\sim 1$ fm$^{-3}$), positive charge fraction (0.01 to 0…
In 2017, LIGO-Virgo collaborations reported detection of the first neutron star merger event, GW170817, which is accompanied by electromagnetic counterparts from radio to gamma rays. Although high-energy neutrinos were not detected from this event, mergers of neutron stars are expected to produce such high-energy particles. Relativistic jets are launched when neutron stars merge. If the jets contain protons, they can emit high-energy neutrinos through photomeson production. In addition, neutron star mergers produce massive and fast ejecta, which can be a source of Galactic high-energy cosmic r…

The current database consists of 254 different binary neutron star configurations and a total of 590 individual numerical-relativity simulations using various grid resolutions. The released waveform data contain the strain and the Weyl curvature multipoles up to $\ell=m=4$. They span a significant portion of the mass, mass-ratio,spin and eccentricity parameter space and include targeted configurations to the events GW170817 an…
We develop a new equation of state (EoS) table involving thermal (anti)kaons, Bose-Einstein condensate of $K^{-}$ mesons and $Λ$-hyperons for core-collapse supernova and neutron star merger simulations. This EoS table is based on a finite temperature density-dependent relativistic hadron field theory where baryon-baryon interaction is mediated by scalar $σ$, vector $ω$ and $ρ$ mesons, using the parameter set DD2 for nucleons. The repulsive hyperon-hyperon interaction is mediated by an additional strange $ϕ$ meson. The EoS for the $K^-$ condensed matter is also calculated within the framework o…
As the interior density of a neutron star can become very high, it has been expected and discussed that quark matter may exist inside it. To describe the transition from hadron to quark phases (and vice versa), there are mainly two methods; one is the first-order phase transition, and the other is the crossover phenomenon. In the present study, using the flavor-SU (3) NJL model with the vector coupling interaction, we have calculated the equation of state for the quark phase at high density. Furthermore, for the hadron phase at low density, we have used two kinds of the equations of state; one…
Neutron stars were first posited in the early thirties, and discovered as pulsars in late sixties; however, only recently are we beginning to understand the matter they contain. This talk describes the continuing development of a consistent picture of the liquid interiors of neutron stars, driven by four advances: observations of two heavy neutron stars with masses $\simeq$ 2.0 solar masses; inferences of masses and radii simultaneously for an increasing number of neutron stars in low mass X-ray binaries, and future determinations via the NICER observatory; the observation of the binary neutro…
