When measuring the value of a function to be minimized is not only expensive but also with noise, the popular simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA) algorithm requires only two function values in each iteration. In this paper, we propose a method requiring only one function measurement value per iteration in the average sense. We prove the strong convergence and asymptotic normality of the new algorithm. Experimental results show the effectiveness and potential of our algorithm.
The single-step one-shot method has proven to be very efficient for PDE-constrained optimization where the partial differential equation (PDE) is solved by an iterative fixed point solver. In this approach, the simulation and optimization tasks are performed simultaneously in a single iteration. If the PDE is unsteady, finding an appropriate fixed point iteration is non-trivial. In this paper, we provide a framework that makes the single-step one-shot method applicable for unsteady PDEs that are solved by classical time-marching schemes. The One-shot method is applied to an optimal control pro…
The common fixed points problem requires finding a point in the intersection of fixed points sets of a finite collection of operators. Quickly solving problems of this sort is of great practical importance for engineering and scientific tasks (e.g., for computed tomography). Iterative methods for solving these problems often employ a Krasnosel'ski\uı-Mann type iteration. We present an Asynchronous Sequential Inertial (ASI) algorithmic framework in a Hilbert space to solve common fixed points problems with a collection of nonexpansive operators. Our scheme allows use of out-of-date iterates whe…
Stochastic computer simulations enable users to gain new insights into complex physical systems. Optimization is a common problem in this context: users seek to find model inputs that maximize the expected value of an objective function. The objective function, however, is time-intensive to evaluate, and cannot be directly measured. Instead, the stochastic nature of the model means that individual realizations are corrupted by noise. More formally, we consider the problem of optimizing the expected value of an expensive black-box function with continuously-differentiable mean, from which obser…
Consider the problem of minimizing the sum of a smooth (possibly non-convex) and a convex (possibly nonsmooth) function involving a large number of variables. A popular approach to solve this problem is the block coordinate descent (BCD) method whereby at each iteration only one variable block is updated while the remaining variables are held fixed. With the recent advances in the developments of the multi-core parallel processing technology, it is desirable to parallelize the BCD method by allowing multiple blocks to be updated simultaneously at each iteration of the algorithm. In this work, …
The nonlinear programming (NLP) problem to solve distribution-level optimal power flow (D-OPF) poses convergence issues and does not scale well for unbalanced distribution systems. The existing scalable D-OPF algorithms either use approximations that are not valid for an unbalanced power distribution system or apply relaxation techniques to the nonlinear power flow equations that do not guarantee a feasible power flow solution. In this paper, we propose scalable D-OPF algorithms that simultaneously achieve optimal and feasible solutions by solving multiple iterations of approximate, or relaxed…
This paper is concerned with a practical inverse problem of simultaneously reconstructing the surface heat flux and the thickness of a solid structure from the associated ultrasonic measurements. In a thermoacoustic coupling model, the thermal boundary condition and the thickness of a solid structure are both unknown, while the measurements of the propagation time by ultrasonic sensors are given. We reformulate the inverse problem as a PDE-constrained optimization problem by constructing a proper objective functional. We then develop an alternating iteration scheme which combines the conjugate…

We present a new family of min-max optimization algorithms that automatically exploit the geometry of the gradient data observed at earlier iterations to perform more informative extra-gradient steps in later ones. Thanks to this adaptation mechanism, the proposed method automatically detects whether the problem is smooth or not, without requiring any prior tuning by the optimizer. As a result, the algorithm simultaneously achieves order-optimal convergence rates, i.e., it converges to an $\varepsilon$-optimal solution within $\mathcal{O}(1/\varepsilon)$ iterations in smooth problems, and with…

We present SimultaneousGreedys, a deterministic algorithm for constrained submodular maximization. At a high level, the algorithm maintains $\ell$ solutions and greedily updates them in a simultaneous fashion. SimultaneousGreedys achieves the tightest known approximation guarantees for both $k$-extendible systems and the more general $k$-systems, which are $(k+1)^2/k = k + \mathcal{O}(1)$ and $(1 + \sqrt{k+2})^2 = k + \mathcal{O}(\sqrt{k})$, respectively. This is in contrast to previous algorithms, which are designed to provide tight approximation guarantees in one setting, but not both. We al…

The simultaneous stochastic optimization of mining complexes (SSOMC) is a large-scale stochastic combinatorial optimization problem that simultaneously manages the extraction of materials from multiple mines and their processing using interconnected facilities to generate a set of final products, while taking into account material supply (geological) uncertainty to manage the associated risk. Although simulated annealing has been shown to outperform comparing methods for solving the SSOMC, early performance might dominate recent performance in that a combination of the heuristics' performance …
