The notion of strict singular characteristics is important in the wellposedness issue of singular dynamics on the cut locus of the viscosity solutions. We provide an intuitive and rigorous proof of the existence of the strict singular characteristics of Hamilton-Jacobi equation $H(x,Du(x),u(x))=0$ in two dimensional case. We also proved if $\mathbf{x}$ is a strict singular characteristic, then we really have the right-differentiability of $\mathbf{x}$ and the right-continuity of $\dot{\mathbf{x}}^+(t)$ for every $t$. Such a strict singular characteristic must give a selection $p(t)\in D^+u(\mathbf{x}(t))$ such that $p(t)=\arg\min_{p\in D^+u(\mathbf{x}(t))}H(\mathbf{x}(t),p,u(\mathbf{x}(t)))$.
In this paper we discuss the existence of stationary incompressible fluids with splash singularities. Specifically, we show that there are stationary solutions to the Euler equations with two fluids whose interfaces are arbitrarily close to a splash, and that there are stationary water waves with splash singularities.
We prove non-uniqueness for a class of weak solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations which have bounded kinetic energy, integrable vorticity, and are smooth outside a fractal set of singular times with Hausdorff dimension strictly less than 1.
We enumerate the local Petrovskii lacunas (that is, the domains of local regularity of the principal fundamental solutions) of strictly hyperbolic PDE's with constant coefficients in $R^N$ at the parabolic singular points of their wavefronts. These points form the next difficult family of classes of the natural classification of singular points after the so-called simple singularities, studied previously. Also we promote a computer program counting for topologically different morsifications of critical points of smooth functions, and hence also for local components of the complement of a gener…
All $(-1)$-homogeneous axisymmetric no-swirl solutions of incompressible stationary Navier-Stokes equations in three dimension which are smooth on the unit sphere minus north and south poles have been classified in our earlier work as a four dimensional surface with boundary. In this paper, we establish near the no-swirl solution surface existence, non-existence and uniqueness results on $(-1)$-homogeneous axisymmetric solutions with nonzero swirl which are smooth on the unit sphere minus north and south poles.
We prove that any continuous and convex stationary ergodic Hamiltonian admits critical subsolutions, which are strict outside the random Aubry set. They make up, in addition, a dense subset of all critical subsolutions with respect to a suitable metric. If the Hamiltonian is additionally assumed of Tonelli type, then there exist strict subsolutions of class $\CC^{1,1}$ in $\R^N$. The proofs are based on the use of Lax--Oleinik semigroups and their regularizing properties in the stationary ergodic environment, as well as on a generalized notion of Aubry set.
We show the unique existence of solutions to stationary Navier-Stokes equations with small singular external forces belonging to a critical space. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest critical space that is available up to now for this kind of existence. This result can be viewed as the stationary counterpart of the existence result obtained by H. Koch and D. Tataru for the free non-stationary Navier-Stokes equations with initial data in BMO$^{-1}$. The stability of the stationary solutions in such spaces is also obtained by a series of sharp estimates for resolvents of a singular…
Main purpose of this paper is to study the local propagation of singularities of viscosity solution to contact type evolutionary Hamilton-Jacobi equation $$ D_tu(t,x)+H(t,x,D_xu(t,x),u(t,x))=0. $$ An important issue of this topic is the existence, uniqueness and regularity of the strict singular characteristic. We apply the recent existence and regularity results on the Herglotz' type variational problem to the aforementioned Hamilton-Jacobi equation with smooth initial data. We obtain some new results on the local structure of the cut set of the viscosity solution near non-conjugate singular …
We study the local behavior of solutions of the stationary Schr\" od\-inger equation with singular potentials, establishing a local decomposition into a homogeneous harmonic polynomial and a lower order term. Combining a corollary to this result with a quantitative unique continuation principle for singular potentials we obtain log-Hölder continuity for the density of states outer-measure in one, two, and three dimensions for Schr\" odinger operators with singular potentials, results that hold for the density of states measure when it exists.
We consider a generalised Keller-Segel model with non-linear porous medium type diffusion and non-local attractive power law interaction, focusing on potentials that are more singular than Newtonian interaction. We show uniqueness of stationary states (if they exist) in any dimension both in the diffusion-dominated regime and in the fair-competition regime when attraction and repulsion are in balance. As stationary states are radially symmetric decreasing, the question of uniqueness reduces to the radial setting. Our key result is a sharp generalised Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev type functional in…
We classify all $(-1)-$homogeneous axisymmetric no swirl solutions of incompressible stationary Navier-Stokes equations in three dimension which are smooth on the unit sphere minus the south pole, parameterize them as a two dimensional surface with boundary, and analyze their pressure profiles near the north pole. Then we prove that there is a curve of $(-1)-$homogeneous axisymmetric solutions with nonzero swirl, having the same smoothness property, emanating from every point of the interior and one part of the boundary of the solution surface. Moreover we prove that there is no such curve of …
We study a phase field model proposed recently in the context of tumour growth. The model couples a Cahn-Hilliard-Brinkman (CHB) system with a elliptic reaction-diffusion equation for a nutrient. The fluid velocity, governed by the Brinkman law, is not solenodial, as its divergence is a function of the nutrient and the phase field variable, i.e., solution-dependent, and frictionless boundary conditions are prescribed for the velocity to avoid imposing unrealistic constraints on the divergence relation. In this paper we give a first result on the existence of weak and stationary solutions to th…
We classify all (-1)-homogeneous axisymmetric no-swirl solutions of incompressible stationary Navier-Stokes equations in three dimension which are smooth on the unit sphere minus the south and north poles, parameterizing them as a four dimensional surface with boundary in appropriate function spaces. Then we establish smoothness properties of the solution surface in the four parameters. The smoothness properties will be used in a subsequent paper where we study the existence of (-1)-homogeneous axisymmetric solutions with non-zero swirl on $\mathbb{S}^2\setminus\{S,N\}$, emanating from the fou…
We prove the mixed-norm Sobolev estimates for solutions to both divergence and non-divergence form time-dependent Stokes systems with unbounded measurable coefficients having small mean oscillations with respect to the spatial variable in small cylinders. As a special case, our results imply Caccioppoli's type estimates for the Stokes systems with variable coefficients. A new $ε$-regularity criterion for Leray-Hopf weak solutions of Navier-Stokes equations is also obtained as a consequence of our regularity results, which in turn implies some borderline cases of the well-known Serrin's regular…
We investigate the behavior of the solutions of a class of certain strictly hyperbolic equations defined on $(0,T]\times \mathbb{R}^n$ in relation to a class of metrics on the phase space. In particular, we study the global regularity and decay issues of the solution to an equation with coefficients polynomially bound in $x$ with their $x$-derivatives and $t$-derivative of order ${O}(t^{-δ}),δ\in [0,1),$ and ${O}(t^{-1})$ respectively. This type of singular behavior allows coefficients to be either oscillatory or logarithmically bounded at $t=0$. We use the Planck function associated with the …
We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation $-Δu + V(x) u = Γ(x) |u|^{p-1}u$ in $\R^n$ where the spectrum of $-Δ+V(x)$ is positive. In the case $n\geq 3$ we use variational methods to prove that for all $p\in (\frac{n}{n-2},\frac{n}{n-2}+\eps)$ there exist distributional solutions with a point singularity at the origin provided $\eps>0$ is sufficiently small and $V,Γ$ are bounded on $\R^n\setminus B_1(0)$ and satisfy suitable Hölder-type conditions at the origin. In the case $n=1,2$ or $n\geq 3,1<p<\frac{n}{n-2}$, however, we show that every distributional solution of the more general equat…
We prove partial regularity of stationary solutions and minimizers $u$ from a set $Ω\subset \mathbb R^n$ to a Riemannian manifold $N$, for the functional $\int_ΩF(x,u,|\nabla u|^2) dx$. The integrand $F$ is convex and satisfies some ellipticity and boundedness assumptions. We also develop a new monotonicity formula and an $ε$-regularity theorem for such stationary solutions with no restriction on their images. We then use the idea of quantitative stratification to show that the k-th strata of the singular set of such solutions are k-rectifiable.
Classification of local $(-1)$-homogeneous axisymmetric solutions of the $3$D stationary Navier-Stokes equations with logarithmic singular-ray behavior
In this work, we study an elliptic problem involving an operator of mixed order with both local and nonlocal aspects, and in either the presence or the absence of a singular nonlinearity. We investigate existence or non-existence properties, power and exponential type Sobolev regularity results, and the boundary behavior of the weak solution, in the light of the interplay between the summability of the datum and the power exponent in singular nonlinearities.
We study (higher order) asymptotic behaviour near branch points of stationary $n$-dimensional two-valued $C^{1, μ}$ graphs in an open subset of ${\mathbb R}^{n+m}$. Specifically, if $M$ is the graph of a two-valued $C^{1, μ}$ function $u$ on an open subset $Ω\subset {\mathbb R}^{n}$ taking values in the space of un-ordered pairs of points in ${\mathbb R}^{m}$, and if the integral varifold $V = (M, θ),$ where the multiplicity function $θ\, : \, M \rightarrow \{1, 2\}$ is such that $θ=2$ on the set where the two values of $u$ agree and $θ=1$ otherwise, is stationary in $Ω\times {\mathbb R}^{m}$ …
We study the existence, regularity and so-called `strict physicality' of weak solutions of a coupled Navier-Stokes Q-tensor system which is proposed as a model for the incompressible flow of nematic liquid crystal materials. An important contribution to the dynamics comes from a singular potential introduced by John Ball and Apala Majumdar (Nematic Liquid Crystals: From Maier-Saupe to a Continuum Theory, Mol. Cryst. Liq. Cryst., Vol. 525: pp. 1-11, 2010) which replaces the commonly employed Landau-de Gennes bulk potential. This is built into our model to ensure that a natural physical constrai…
In Lipschitz two and three dimensional domains, we study the existence for the so--called Boussinesq model of thermally driven convection under singular forcing. By singular we mean that the heat source is allowed to belong to $H^{-1}(\varpi,Ω)$, where $\varpi$ is a weight in the Muckenhoupt class $A_2$ that is regular near the boundary. We propose a finite element scheme and, under the assumption that the domain is convex and $\varpi^{-1} \in A_1$, show its convergence. In the case that the thermal diffusion and viscosity are constants, we propose an a posteriori error estimator and show its …
We prove a removable singularities theorem for stationary Einstein equations, with useful implications for constructions of stationary solutions using soliton methods.
This paper is concerned with the Riemann problem of one-dimensional Euler equations with a singular source. The exact solution of this Riemann problem contains a stationary discontinuity induced by the singular source, which is different from all the simple waves in the Riemann solution of classical Euler equations. We propose an eigenvalue-based monotonicity criterion to select the physical curve of this stationary discontinuity. By including this stationary discontinuity as an elementary wave, the structure of Riemann solution becomes diverse, e.g. the number of waves is not fixed and intera…
