We investigate the compression of quantum information with respect to a given set $\mathcal{M}$ of high-dimensional measurements. This leads to a notion of simulability, where we demand that the statistics obtained from $\mathcal{M}$ and an arbitrary quantum state $ρ$ are recovered exactly by first compressing $ρ$ into a lower dimensional space, followed by some quantum measurements. A full quantum compression is possible, i.e., leaving only classical information, if and only if the set $\mathcal{M}$ is jointly measurable. Our notion of simulability can thus be seen as a quantification of measurement incompatibility in terms of dimension. After defining these concepts, we provide an illustrative examples involving mutually unbiased basis, and develop a method based on semi-definite programming for constructing simulation models. In turn we analytically construct optimal simulation models for all projective measurements subjected to white noise or losses. Finally, we discuss how our approach connects with other concepts introduced in the context of quantum channels and quantum correlations.
We introduce a framework for simulating quantum measurements based on classical processing of a set of accessible measurements. Well-known concepts such as joint measurability and projective simulability naturally emerge as particular cases of our framework, but our study also leads to novel results and questions. First, a generalisation of joint measurability is derived, which yields a hierarchy for the incompatibility of sets of measurements. A similar hierarchy is defined based on the number of outcomes used to perform the simulation of a given measurement. This general approach also allows…
In the task of quantum state learning, one receives some data about measurements performed on a state, and using that, must make predictions on the outcomes of unseen measurements. Computing a prediction is generally hard but it has been shown that learning can be performed efficiently for states that are generated by Clifford circuits, which are known to be efficiently classically simulable. This naturally leads to the question, how does efficient state learnability compare with efficient classical simulation? In this work we introduce an extra condition on top of classical simulablity that g…

In this thesis, we consider the properties of measurements in quantum theory and other operational theories. After having introduced the framework of operational theories, we consider a communication scheme based on an experimental prepare-and-measure scenario and demonstrate this with different communication tasks. This gives us context for how the different communication tasks can be implemented in different theories, in doing so establishing quantum theory intuitively as an operational theory among other theories. The main property of measurements we focus on in this work is the simulation …
We present a general theory of comparison of quantum channels, concerning with the question of simulability or approximate simulability of a given quantum channel by allowed transformations of another given channel. We introduce a modification of conditional min-entropies, with respect to the set F of allowed transformations, and show that under some conditions on F, these quantities characterize approximate simulability. If F is the set of free superchannels in a quantum resource theory of processes, the modified conditional min-entropies form a complete set of resource monotones. If the tran…
We analyze the complexity of classically simulating continuous-time dynamics of locally interacting quantum spin systems with a constant rate of entanglement breaking noise. We prove that a polynomial time classical algorithm can be used to sample from the state of the spins when the rate of noise is higher than a threshold determined by the strength of the local interactions. Furthermore, by encoding a 1D fault tolerant quantum computation into the dynamics of spin systems arranged on two or higher dimensional grids, we show that for several noise channels, the problem of weakly simulating th…
We introduce the post-processing preorder and equivalence relations for general measurements on a possibly infinite-dimensional general probabilistic theory described by an order unit Banach space $E$ with a Banach predual. We define the measurement space $\mathfrak{M}(E)$ as the set of post-processing equivalence classes of continuous measurements on $E .$ We define the weak topology on $\mathfrak{M} (E)$ as the weakest topology in which the state discrimination probabilities for any finite-label ensembles are continuous and show that $\mathfrak{M}(E)$ equipped with the convex operation corre…
The existence of incompatibility is one of the most fundamental features of quantum theory, and can be found at the core of many of the theory's distinguishing features, such as Bell inequality violations and the no-broadcasting theorem. A scheme for obtaining new observables from existing ones via classical operations, the so-called simulation of observables, has led to an extension of the notion of compatibility for measurements. We consider the simulation of observables within the operational framework of general probabilistic theories and introduce the concept of simulation irreducibility.…

We study the evolution of an open quantum system using a Langevin unravelling of the density matrix evolution over matrix product states. As the strength of coupling to and temperature of the environment is increased, we find a transition where the entanglement of the individual trajectories saturates, permitting a classical simulation of the system for all times. This is the Hamiltonian open system counterpart of the saturation in entanglement found in random circuits with projective or weak measurements. If a system is open, there is a limit to the advantage in simulating its behaviour on a …

The relation between noise and disturbance is investigated within the general framework of Galois connections. Within this framework, we introduce the notion of leak of information, mathematically defined as one of the two closure maps arising from the observable-channel compatibility relation. We provide a physical interpretation for it, and we give a comparison with the analogous closure maps associated with joint measurability and simulability for quantum observables.
In this paper, we show how information geometry, the natural geometry of discrete probability distributions, can be used to derive the quantum formalism. The derivation rests upon three elementary features of quantum phenomena, namely complementarity, measurement simulability, and global gauge invariance. When these features are appropriately formalized within an information geometric framework, and combined with a novel information-theoretic principle, the central features of the finite-dimensional quantum formalism can be reconstructed.

We investigate the effect of quantum noise on the measurement-induced quantum phase transition in monitored random quantum circuits. Using the efficient simulability of random Clifford circuits, we find that the transition is broadened into a crossover and that the phase diagram as a function of projective measurements and noise exhibits several distinct regimes. We show that a mapping to a classical statistical mechanics problem accounts for the main features of the random circuit phase diagram. The bulk noise maps to an explicit permutation symmetry breaking coupling; this symmetry is sponta…

We study supervised learning algorithms in which a quantum device is used to perform a computational subroutine - either for prediction via probability estimation, or to compute a kernel via estimation of quantum states overlap. We design implementations of these quantum subroutines using Boson Sampling architectures in linear optics, supplemented by adaptive measurements. We then challenge these quantum algorithms by deriving classical simulation algorithms for the tasks of output probability estimation and overlap estimation. We obtain different classical simulability regimes for these two c…

We present a theory of the entanglement transition tuned by measurement strength in qudit chains evolved by random unitary circuits and subject to either weak or random projective measurements. The transition can be understood as a nonanalytic change in the amount of information extracted by the measurements about the initial state of the system, quantified by the Fisher information. To compute the von~Neumann entanglement entropy $S$ and the Fisher information $\mathcal{F}$, we apply a replica method based on a sequence of quantities $\tilde{S}^{(n)}$ and $\mathcal{F}^{(n)}$ that depend on th…
We propose an enhanced discrimination measurement for tripartite 3-dimensional entangled states in order to improve the discernible number of orthogonal entangled states. The scheme suggests 3-dimensional Bell state measurement by exploiting composite two 3-dimensional state measurement setups. The setup relies on state-of-the-art techniques, a multi-port interferometer and nondestructive photon number measurements that are used for the post-selection of suitable ensembles. With this scheme, the sifted signal rate of measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution using 3-dimensional q…
Bell state measurement (BSM) plays a vital role in quantum information. There are many researches on BSM of qubit Bell state, however, there is no definite solution of how to realize high-dimensional Bell state measurement (HDBSM). In this paper, We present a scheme for realizing arbitrary high-dimensional two-particle Bell state measurement by auxiliary entanglement. In our scheme, the maximal entangled states with different degrees of freedom (DOF) are used as auxiliary states, and then the HDBSM can be achieved by implementing Bell measurement with different degrees of freedom. We present t…
Quantum Bell nonlocality is an important quantum phenomenon. Recently, the shareability of Bell nonlocality under unilateral measurements has been widely studied. In this study, we consider the shareability of quantum Bell nonlocality under bilateral measurements. Under a specific class of projection operators, we find that quantum Bell nonlocality cannot be shared for a limited number of times, as in the case of unilateral measurements. Our proof is analytical and our measurement strategies can be generalized to higher dimension cases.
Mutually unbiased bases, mutually unbiased measurements and general symmetric informationally complete measurements are three related concepts in quantum information theory. We investigate multipartite systems using these notions and present some criteria detecting entanglement of arbitrary high dimensional multi-qudit systems and multipartite systems of subsystems with different dimensions. It is proved that these criteria can detect the $k$-nonseparability ($k$ is even) of multipartite qudit systems and arbitrary high dimensional multipartite systems of $m$ subsystems with different dimensio…
Entanglement -- the coherent correlations between parties in a joint quantum system -- is well-understood and quantifiable in the two-dimensional, two-party case. Higher (>2)-dimensional entangled systems hold promise in extending the capabilities of various quantum information applications. Despite the utility of such systems, methods for quantifying high-dimensional entanglement are more limited and experimentally challenging. We review entanglement certification approaches and the large number of -- often difficult -- measurements required to apply them. We present a novel certification met…
Quantum key distribution (QKD) provides ultimate cryptographic security based on the laws of quantum mechanics. For point-to-point QKD protocols, the security of the generated key is compromised by detector side channel attacks. This problem can be solved with measurement device independent QKD (mdi-QKD). However, mdi-QKD has shown limited performances in terms of the secret key generation rate, due to post-selection in the Bell measurements. We show that high dimensional (Hi-D) encoding (qudits) improves the performance of current mdi-QKD implementations. The scheme is proven to be unconditio…
Wavefunction is the foundation of quantum theory, which is assumed to give a complete description of a quantum system. For a long time, wavefunction is introduced as an abstract element of the theory and there lacks effective ways to measure it directly. The situation, however, is somewhat changed when Lundeen et al. reported the direct measurement of the quantum wavefunction via weak measurements, which gives the wavefunction a clearly operational definition [Nature 474, 188 (2011)]. The weak measurement method requires sequential measurements of conjugate observables position and momentum wi…
The certification of entanglement dimensionality is of great importance in characterizing quantum systems. Recently, it is pointed out that quantum correlation of high-dimensional states can be simulated with a sequence of lower-dimensional states. Such problem may render existing characterization protocols unreliable---the observed entanglement may not be a truly high-dimensional one. Here, we introduce the notion of irreducible entanglement to capture its dimensionality that is indecomposable in terms of a sequence of lower-dimensional entangled systems. We prove this new feature can be dete…
We demonstrate an implementation of unambiguous state discrimination of two equally probable single-qubit states via a one-dimensional photonic quantum walk experimentally. Furthermore we experimentally realize a quantum walk algorithm for implementing a generalized measurement in terms of positive operator value measurement on a single qubit. The measurement of the single-photons' positions corresponds to a measurement of an element of the positive operator value measurement on the polarizations of the single-photons.
In this paper, we present a general theory of finite quantum measurements, for which we assume that the state space of the measured system is a finite dimensional Hilbert space and that the possible outcomes of a measurement is a finite set of real numbers. We develop the theory in a deductive manner from the basic postulates for quantum mechanics and a few plausible axioms for general quantum measurements. We derive an axiomatic characterization of all the physically realizable finite quantum measurements. Mathematical tools necessary to describe measurement statistics, such as POVMs and quan…
Certification of quantum systems and operations is a central task in quantum information processing. Most current schemes rely on a tomography with fully characterised devices, while this may not be met in real experiments. Device characterisations can be removed with device-independent tests, it is technically challenging at the moment, though. In this letter, we investigate the problem of certifying entangled states and measurements via semi-quantum games, a type of non-local quantum games with well characterised quantum inputs, balancing practicality and device-independence. We first design…
One of the proposals for the exploitation of two-dimensional quantum walks has been the efficient generation of entanglement. Unfortunately, the technological effort required for the experimental realization of standard two-dimensional quantum walks is significantly demanding. In this respect, an alternative scheme with less challenging conditions has been recently studied, particularly in terms of spatial-entanglement generation [C. Di Franco, M. Mc Gettrick, and Th. Busch, Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 080502 (2011)]. Here, we extend the investigation to a scenario where a measurement is performed o…
Concentrating on finite dimensional systems, we show that one can limit to extremal rank-1 POVMs if two simple procedures of mixing and relabeling are permitted. We demonstrate that any finite outcome POVM can be obtained from extremal rank-1 POVMs with these two procedures. In particular, extremal POVMs with higher rank are just relabelings of extremal rank-1 POVMs and their structure is therefore clarified.
The measurement range problem, where one cannot determine the data outside the range of the detector, limits the characterization of entanglement in high-dimensional quantum systems when employing, among other tools from information theory, the entropic uncertainty relations. Practically, the measurement range problem weakens the security of entanglement-based large-alphabet quantum key distribution (QKD) employing degrees of freedom including time-frequency or electric field quadrature. We present a modified entropic uncertainty relation that circumvents the measurement range problem under ce…
Measurement-based quantum computation with continuous variables in an optical setup shows the great promise towards implementation of large-scale quantum computation, where the time-domain multiplexing approach enables us to generate the large-scale cluster state used to perform measurement-based quantum computation. To make effective use of the advantage of the time-domain multiplexing approach, in this paper, we propose the method to generate the large-scale 3-dimensional cluster state which is a platform for topologically protected measurement-based quantum computation. Our method combines …
