Additive manufacturing has been vastly applied to fabricate various structures of nickel-titanium (NiTi) shape memory alloys due to its flexibility to create complex structures with minimal defects. However, the microstructure heterogeneity and secondary phase formation are two main problems that impede the further application of NiTi alloys. Although post-heat treatment is usually adopted to improve or manipulate NiTi alloy properties, it cannot realize the spatial control of thermal and/or mechanical properties of NiTi alloys. To overcome the limitations of uniform post-heat treatment, this study proposes an in-situ heat treatment strategy that is integrated into the directed energy deposition of NiTi alloys. The proposed method will potentially lead to new manufacturing capabilities to achieve location-dependent performance or property manipulation. The influences of in-situ heat treatment on the thermal and mechanical properties of printed NiTi structures were investigated. The investigations were carried out in terms of thermal cycling, microstructure evolution, and mechanical properties by 3D finite element simulations and experimental characterizations. A low-power laser beam was adopted to localize the in-situ heat treatment only to the current printed layer, facilitating a reverse peritectic reaction and a transient high solution treatment successively. The proposed in-situ heat treatment on the specimen results in a more obvious phase transformation peak in the differential scanning calorimetry curves, about 50%~70% volume reduction for the Ti2Ni phase, and approximately 35 HV reduction on microhardness.
Additive manufacturing has been adopted to process nickel-titanium shape memory alloys due to its advantages of flexibility and minimal defects. The current layer-by-layer method is accompanied by a complex temperature history, which is not beneficial to the final characteristics of shape memory alloys. In this study, a continuous directed energy deposition method has been proposed to improve microstructure uniformity. The spatial characterization of nickel-titanium shape memory alloy fabricated by continuous directed energy deposition is investigated to study the temperature history, phase co…

In this paper, a three-dimensional numerical model considering heat transfer, phase change, and fluid flow has been developed to simulate the cladd…
Near-field and far-field high-energy diffraction microscopy and microcomputed tomography X-ray techniques were used to study a bulk single crystal nickel-titanium shape memory alloy sample subjected to thermal cycling under a constant applied load. Three-dimensional in situ reconstructions of the austenite microstructure are presented, including the structure and distribution of emergent grain boundaries. After one cycle, the subgrain structure is significantly refined, and heterogeneous Σ3 and Σ9 grain boundaries emerge. The low volume and uneven dispersion of the emergent Σ boundaries across…
In Ni-base superalloys with low Al and/or Ti content the precipitation and subsequent coarsening of gamma' particles at intermediate temperatures contribute to the degradation of the mechanical properties of the alloy. In the present paper the coarsening process is modelled and the change of the critical resolved shear stress of the alloy due to coarsening of the gamma' particles is calculated by means of statistical analysis of the depinning of a single gliding edge dislocation. It is found that the contribution of gamma' hardening to the critical resolved shear stress at 973 K reduces to mor…
Titanium is commonly added to nickel superalloys but has a well-documented detrimental effect on oxidation resistance. The present work constitutes the first atomistic-scale quantitative measurements of grain boundary and bulk compositions in the oxide scale of a current generation polycrystalline nickel superalloy performed through atom probe tomography. Titanium was found to be particularly detrimental to oxide scale growth through grain boundary diffusion.
Electrochemical 3D printing of conductors with microscale resolution holds a great promise for a wide range of applications, but the choice of suitable metals for these technologies remains limited. Most efforts so far have been focused on deposition of copper, however, other metals are also of interest, especially when tuning of mechanical, electrical, or optical properties is required for a given application. Here we address the issue of a limited materials choice in electrochemical 3D printing by extending the materials library to silver and nickel. Free-standing microscale structures are f…
The effects of various heat treatments on the microstructure and hardness of new Ni56Ti41Hf3 and Ni56Ti36Hf8 (atomic %) alloys were studied to evaluate the suitability of these materials for tribological applications. A solid-solution strengthening effect due to Hf atoms was observed for the solution annealed (SA) Ni56Ti36Hf8 alloy (716 HV), resulting in a comparable hardness to the Ni56Ti41Hf3 alloy containing 54 vol.% of Ni4Ti3 precipitates (707 HV). In the Ni56Ti41Hf3 alloy, the maximum hardness (752 HV), achieved after aging at 300C for 12 h, was attributed to dense, semi-coherent precipit…
The near equiatomic NiTi alloy is the most successful shape memory alloy by a large margin. It is widely and increasingly used in biomedical devices. Yet, despite having a repeatable superelastic effect and excellent shape-memory, NiTi is very far from satisfying the conditions that characterize the most reversible phase transforming materials. Thus, the scientific reasons underlying its vast success present an enigma. In this work, we perform rigorous mathematical derivation and accurate DFT calculation of transformation mechanisms to seek previously unrecognized twin-like defects that we ter…
The tribological performance and underlying deformation behavior of Ni55Ti45, Ni54Ti45Hf1 and Ni56Ti36Hf8 alloys were studied using rolling contact fatigue (RCF) testing and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). TEM results of the as-machined RCF rods, prepared using focus ion beam, revealed some damage very close to the surface. TEM results after initial RCF cycling showed that additional damage was mainly confined to deformation bands that propagated several microns into the sample. These bands formed via localized dislocation slip, possibly on multiple slip systems, within the B2 matrix a…
Past models of stress-strain response under cyclic loading mainly rely on macroscopic equations which consider microstructure evolution indirectly or simply discard microstructure information. Modern materials science, on the other hand, seeks quantitive descriptions for the relations between microstrucutre and loading response. In the present work, we show a promising mesoscale phase-field framework which can describe co-evolution of phase/grain and defect microstructures, reveal microstructure mechanisms and simultaneously predict deformation properties as a natural outcome of microstrucutur…
The microstructural characteristics of a single crystalline nickel based superalloy (AM1) tested under high temperature fatigue at 950$^\circ$C are reported. For repeated fatigue (R$_\varepsilon$=0) through a range of cycle numbers N with imposed total strain amplitude $Δ\varepsilon^t$, two main types of behaviour are found depending on N and $Δ\varepsilon^t$. This allows a map of microstructures versus the number of cycles N and $Δ\varepsilon^t$ to be constructed. A domain called A presents anisotropic microstructures due either to a partition of the plasticity throughout the k channels, or t…
A stack of titanium foils was irradiated with 136 MeV 136Xe to study microstructure damage and phase stability of titanium upon irradiation. X- ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy were used to study the resulting microstructure damage and phase stability of titanium. We observed the phase transfor- mation of polycrystalline titanium from alpha-Ti (hexagonally closed packed (hcp)) to face centered cubic (fcc) after irradiation with 2.2 x 1015 ions/cm2. Irradiation of Ti with 1.8 x 1014-2.2 x 1015 ions/cm2 resulted in the forma…

Oxygen ingress was quantified and related to changes in mechanical properties through nanoindentation studies. The relationship between oxygen concentration, microstructure, crystal orientation and hardness has been explored through correlative hardness mapping, EPMA and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The role of microstructure on oxygen ingress has been studi…
Nickel carbon nanotube composites with varying amounts of carbon nanotubes are deformed by high pressure torsion at different deformation temperatures to high strains, where no further refinement of the Nickel matrix microstructure is observed. Mean Nickel grain sizes increase with increasing HPT deformation temperature, while the size of the carbon nanotube agglomerates is significantly reduced. Additionally, the distribution of the agglomerates in the metal matrix becomes more homogenous. To investigate the mechanical performance of the HPT deformed composites, uniaxial tensile and compressi…
Creep in single crystal Nickel-based superalloys has been a topic of interest since decades, and nowadays simulations are more and more able to complement experiments. In these alloys, the $γ/γ'$ phase microstructure co-evolves with the system of dislocations under load, and understanding the mutual interactions is essential for understanding the resulting creep properties. Predictive modeling thus requires multiphysics frameworks capable of modeling and simulating both the phase and defect microstructures. To do so, we formulate a coupled model of phase-field evolution and continuum dislocati…
Nickel-based superalloys play a major role in many technologically relevant high temperature applications. Understanding and predicting the evolution of the phase microstructure during high temperature creep together with the evolution of the dislocation microstructure is a challenge that up to date has not yet been fully accomplished. Our two-dimensional coupled phase-field/continuum dislocation dynamics model explains microstructural mechanisms which are important during the early stage of rafting in a single crystal system. It shows how $γ/γ'$ phases and dislocations interact giving rise to…
We employ physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) to quantify the microstructure of a polycrystalline Nickel by computing the spatial variation of compliance coefficients (compressibility, stiffness and rigidity) of the material. The PINN is supervised with realistic ultrasonic surface acoustic wavefield data acquired at an ultrasonic frequency of 5 MHz for the polycrystalline material. The ultrasonic wavefield data is represented as a deformation on the top surface of the material with the deformation measured using the method of laser vibrometry. The ultrasonic data is further complemented …
Titanium and its alloys undergo temperature-driven martensitic phase transformation leading to the development of complex microstructures at mesoscale. Optimizing the mechanical properties of these materials requires an understanding of the correlations between the processing parameters and the mechanisms involved in the microstructure formation and evolution. In this work, we study the temperature-induced phase transition from BCC to HCP in pure titanium by atomistic modeling and investigate the influence of local stress conditions on the final martensite morphology. We simulate the transitio…
The mechanical properties of polycrystalline metals are governed by the interaction of defects that are generated by deformation within the 3D microstructure. In materials that deform by slip, the plasticity is usually highly heterogeneous within the microstructure. Many experimental tools can be used to observe the results of slip events at the free surface of a sample; however, there are only a few methods for imaging these events in the bulk. In this article, the imaging of bulk slip events within the 3D microstructure are enabled by the combined use of X-ray diffraction contrast tomography…

The microstructural evolution of a dissimilar metal weld (DMW) obtained by narrow-gap gas tungsten arc welding (NG-GTAW) was investigated after it was subjected to a post-weld heat treatment (PWHT). The case studied here is a joint between low-alloy steel pipes and a stainless steel steam generator using a nickel based alloy as filler material. The fusion boundary that was the focus of this work was that between the low-alloy steel (2.25Cr-1Mo) and the nickel alloy (alloy 82). The difference in matrix phase and chemical composition between the two alloys leads to a large difference in chemical…
The porous titanium nickelide is very popular in various industries due to unique combination of physical and mechanical properties such as shape memory effect, high corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility. The non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulation was applied to study the influence of porosity degree on mechanical properties of porous amorphous titanium nickelide at uniaxial tension, uniaxial compression, and uniform shear. We have found that the porous amorphous alloy is characterized by a relatively large value of Young's modulus in comparison to its crystalline analogue. It has …
Contemporary powder-based polycrystalline nickel-base superalloys inherit microstructures and properties that are heavily determined by the thermo-mechanical treatments during processing. Here, the influence of a thermal exposure alone to an alloy powder is studied to elucidate the controlling formation mechanisms of the strengthening precipitates using a combination of atom probe tomography and in-situ neutron diffraction. The initial powder comprised a single-phase supersaturated gamma only; from this, the evolution of gamma-prime volume fraction and lattice misfit was assessed. The initial …
Additive manufacturing (AM) processes produce parts with improved physical, chemical, and mechanical properties compared to conventional manufacturing processes. In AM processes, intricate part geometries are produced from multicomponent alloy powder, in a layer-by-layer fashion with multipass laser melting, solidification, and solid-state phase transformations, in a shorter manufacturing time, with minimal surface finishing, and at a reasonable cost. However, there is an increasing need for post-processing of the manufactured parts via, for example, stress relieving heat treatment and hot iso…
Gaussian process regression machine learning with a physically-informed kernel is used to model the phase compositions of nickel-base superalloys. The model delivers good predictions for laboratory and commercial superalloys, with $R^2>0.8$ for all but two components of each of the $γ$ and $γ'$ phases, and $R^2=0.924$ ($\mathrm{RMSE}=0.063$) for the $γ'$ fraction. For four benchmark SX-series alloys the methodology predicts the $γ'$ phase composition with $\mathrm{RMSE}=0.006$ and the fraction with $\mathrm{RMSE}=0.020$, superior to the $0.007$ and $0.021$ respectively from CALPHAD. Furthermor…

It has been found that minor phase of columbite NiNb2O6 tended to form together with the desired Ni4Nb2O9 phase, depending on sintering conditions. The optimization of sintering conditions could …
Aiming at increasing the yield strength of transformation and twinning induced plasticity (TRIP and TWIP) titanium alloys, a dual-phase $α$/$β$ alloy is designed and studied. The composition Ti 7Cr 1.5Sn (wt.%) is proposed, based on an approach coupling Calphad calculations and classical Bo-Md design tool used in Ti-alloys. Its microstructure is made of 20% of $α$ precipitates in a $β$ matrix, the matrix having optimal Bo and Md parameters for deformation twinning and martensitic transformation. A combination of high strength and reasonable ductility has been achieved in a copper-1.7 at.%titanium alloy deformed by high-pressure torsion. Grain refinement and a spinodal microstructure provided a hardness of 254 +/- 2 HV , yield strength of 800 MPa and elongation of 10%. The spinodal structure persisted during isothermal ageing, further increasing the yield strength to 890MPa while retaining an elongation of 7%. This work demonstrates the potential for spinodal microstructures to overcome the difficulties in retaining ductility in ultra-fine grained or nanocrystalline alloys, especially …
Two phase titanium alloys are important for high performance engineering components, such as aeroengine discs. The microstructures of these alloys are tailored during thermomechanical processing to precisely control phase factions, morphology and crystallographic orientations. In bimodal two phase (α + β) Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo (Ti-6242) alloys there are often three microstructural lengthscales to consider: large (~10 μm) equiaxed primary α; >200 nm thick plate α with a basketweave morphology; and very fine scaled (>50 nm plate thickness) secondary α that grows between the larger α plates surround…
In this progress report we present a new approach to the ab-initio guided bottom up design of beta-Ti alloys for biomedical applications using a quantum mechanical simulation method in conjunction with experiments. Digital image correlation of laser-ablated platinum nanoparticles on the surface of a polycrystalline metal (nickel-based superalloy Rene 88DT) was used to obtain the local strain behavior from an in situ scanning electron microscope tensile experiment at room temperature. By fusing this information with crystallographic orientations from EBSD, a subsequent analysis shows that the average maximum shear strain tends to increase with increasing Schmid factor. Additionally, the range of the extreme values for the maximum shear strain also increases closer to the grain boundary, signifying that gr…
A new method of combined loading was developed for manufacturing large - scale ingot of alpha-beta titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V with the diameter of the gauge 120 mm and the length 300 mm. The process includes torsion with simultaneous tensile deformation, followed by a single compression and drawing of the ingot in alpha-beta temperature phase fields. Ingot structure and mechanical property evaluation was performed after deformation and post-deformation heating. The ingots had completely homogeneous macrostructure. The ingot microstructures were alpha plus beta with a mean grain size of d=10 m. T…
The kinetics of primary alpha-Ti colony/Widmanstatten plate growth from the beta are examined, comparing model to experiment. The plate growth velocity depends sensitively both on the diffusivity D(T) of the rate-limiting species and on the supersaturation around the growing plate. These result in a maxima in growth velocity around 40 K below the transus, once sufficient supersaturation is available to drive plate growth. In Ti-6246, the plate growth velocity was found to be around 0.32 um min-1 at 850 oC, which was in good agreement with the model prediction of 0.36 um min-1 . The solute fiel…
Cobalt-based alloys with γ/γ' microstructures have the potential to become the next generation of superalloys, but alloy compositions and processing steps must be optimized to improve coarsening, creep, and rafting behavior. While these behaviors are different than in nickel-based superalloys, alloy development can be accelerated by understanding the thermodynamic factors influencing microstructure evolution. In this work, we develop a phase field model informed by first-principles density functional theory and experimental data to predict the equilibrium shapes of Co-Al-W γ' precipitates. Thr…
The residual stress plays a vital role in determination of the device performance that uses thin films coating and thus the accurate determination of stress and its optimization with process parameters is an ongoing research work for many decades. In line with this, the microscopic origin of the stress at the atomic scale and its development during the thin film deposition is a matter of major scientific interests. The industrialization of Laser Additive Manufacturing (LAM) is challenged by the undesirable microstructures and high residual stresses originating from the fast and complex solidification process. Non-destructive assessment of the mechanical performance controlling deformation patterning is therefore critical. Here, we use Dark Field X-ray Microscopy (DFXM) to non-destructively map the 3D intragranular orientation and strain variations throughout a surface breaking grain within a directed energy deposition nickel superalloy. DFXM results reveal a highly heterogenous 3D microstructure in terms…
Component failure due to cold dwell fatigue of titanium and its alloys is a long-standing problem which has significant safety and economic implications to the aviation industry. This can be addressed by understanding the governing mechanisms of time dependent plasticity behaviour of Ti at low temperatures. Here, stress relaxation tests were performed at four different temperatures on three major alloy systems: commercially pure titanium (two alloys with different oxygen content), Ti-6Al-4V (two microstructures with differing beta phase fractions) and Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-xMo (two alloys with differ…

Microstructure characterisation has been greatly enhanced through the use of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), where rich maps are generated through analysis of the crystal phase and orientation in the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Conventional EBSD analysis involves raster scanning of the electron beam and the serial analysis of each diffraction pattern in turn. For grain shape, crystallographic texture, and microstructure analysis this can be inefficient. In this work, we present Rapid EBSD, a data fusion approach combining forescatter electron (FSE) imaging with static sparse s…
By means of molecular-dynamics simulations, temperature driven diffusionless structural phase transitions in equi- and nearly equiatomic ordered nickel-titanium alloys were investigated. The model predicts a stable B19' phase at low temperatures and a nearly cubic B2 phase at high temperatures. After an analysis of crystallography and energetics of the emerging structures, the experimental…

The reverse martensitic ("austenitic") transformation upon heating of equiatomic nickel-titanium nanoparticles with diameters between 4 and 17 nm is analyzed by means of molecular-dynamics simulations with a semi-empirical model potential. After constructing an appropriate order parameter to distinguish locally between the monoclinic B19' at low and the cubic B2 structure at high temperatures, the process of the phase transition is visualized. This shows a heterogeneous nucleation of austenite at the surface of the particles, which propagates to the interior by plane sliding, explaining a diff…

Driven non-equilibrium structural phase transformation has been probed using time varying resistance fluctuations or noise. We demonstrate that the non-Gaussian component (NGC) of noise obtained by evaluating the higher order statistics of fluctuations, serves as a simple kinetic detector of these phase transitions. Using the martensite transformation in free-standing wires of nickel-titanium binary alloys as a prototype, we observe clear deviations from the Gaussian background in the transformation zone, indicative of the long range correlations in the system as the phase transforms. The viab…

For equilibrium liquid phase, vaporization temperature $T_{b}$ and the equation of states in the form of $ρ(T)$ are determined. It is found that the porosity of this amorphous solid do…
The near-rapid solidification conditions during additive manufacturing can lead to selection of non-equilibrium phases. Sharp interface models via interface response functions have been used earlier to explain the microstructure selection under such solidification conditions. However, most of the sharp interface models assume linear superposition of contributions of alloying elements without considering the non-linearity associated with the phase diagram. In this report, both planar and dendritic Calphad coupled sharp interface models have been implemented and used to explain the growth-contro…
