The learning process of classical machine learning algorithms is tuned by hyperparameters that need to be customized to best learn and generalize from an input dataset. In recent years, Quantum Machine Learning (QML) has been gaining traction as a possible application of quantum computing which may provide quantum advantage in the future. However, quantum versions of classical machine learning algorithms introduce a plethora of additional parameters and circuit variations that have their own intricacies in being tuned.
In this work, we take the first steps towards Automated Quantum Machine Learning (AutoQML). We propose a concrete description of the problem, and then develop a classical-quantum hybrid cloud architecture that allows for parallelized hyperparameter exploration and model training.
As an application use-case, we train a quantum Generative Adversarial neural Network (qGAN) to generate energy prices that follow a known historic data distribution. Such a QML model can be used for various applications in the energy economics sector.

We develop and implement automated methods for optimizing quantum circuits of the size and type expected in quantum computations that outperform classical computers. We show how to handle continuous gate parameters and report a collection of fast algorithms capable of optimizing large-scale quantum circuits. For the suite of benchmarks considered, we obtain substantial reductions in gate counts. In particular, we provide better optimization in significantly less time than previous approaches, while making minimal structural changes so as to preserve the basic layout of the underlying quantum a…
Quantum algorithms are usually described as monolithic circuits, becoming large at modest input size. Near-term quantum architectures can only manage a small number of qubits. We develop an automated method to distribute quantum circuits over multiple agents, minimising quantum communication between them. We reduce the problem to hypergraph partitioning and then solve it with state-of-the-art optimisers. This makes our approach useful in practice, unlike previous methods. Our implementation is evaluated on five quantum circuits of practical relevance.
In this paper we discuss an efficient technique that can implement any given Boolean function as a quantum circuit. The method converts a truth table of a Boolean function to the corresponding quantum circuit using a minimal number of auxiliary qubits. We give examples of some circuits synthesized with this technique. A direct result that follows from the technique is a new way to convert any classical digital circuit to its classical reversible form.
Superconducting circuits have emerged as a promising platform to build quantum processors. The challenge of designing a circuit is to compromise between realizing a set of performance metrics and reducing circuit complexity and noise sensitivity. At the same time, one needs to explore a large design space, and computational approaches often yield long simulation times. Here we automate the circuit design task using SCILLA, a software for automated discovery of superconducting circuits. SCILLA performs a parallelized, closed-loop optimization to design circuit diagrams that match pre-defined pr…
We present a computer-aided design flow for quantum circuits, complete with automatic layout and control logic extraction. To motivate automated layout for quantum circuits, we investigate grid-based layouts and show a performance variance of four times as we vary grid structure and initial qubit placement. We then propose two polynomial-time design heuristics: a greedy algorithm suitable for small, congestion-free quantum circuits and a dataflow-based analysis approach to placement and routing with implicit initial placement of qubits. Finally, we show that our dataflow-based heuristic genera…

Emerging quantum algorithms that process data require that classical input data be represented as a quantum state. These data-processing algorithms often follow the gate model of quantum computing--which requires qubits to be initialized to a basis state, typically $\lvert 0 \rangle$--and thus often employ state generation circuits to transform the initialized basis state to a data-representation state. There are many ways to encode classical data in a qubit, and the oft-applied approach of basis encoding does not allow optimization to the extent that other variants do. In this work, we thus c…

Designing efficient quantum circuits is a central bottleneck to exploring the potential of quantum computing, particularly for noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices, where circuit efficiency and resilience to errors are paramount. The search space of gate sequences grows combinatorially, and handcrafted templates often waste scarce qubit and depth budgets. We introduce \textsc{FlowQ-Net} (Flow-based Quantum design Network), a generative framework for automated quantum circuit synthesis based on Generative Flow Networks (GFlowNets). This framework learns a stochastic policy to constru…
The current phase of quantum computing is in the Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) era. On NISQ devices, two-qubit gates such as CNOTs are much noisier than single-qubit gates, so it is essential to minimize their count. Quantum circuit synthesis is a process of decomposing an arbitrary unitary into a sequence of quantum gates, and can be used as an optimization tool to produce shorter circuits to improve overall circuit fidelity. However, the time-to-solution of synthesis grows exponentially with the number of qubits. As a result, synthesis is intractable for circuits on a large qubit s…
We present CertiQ, a verification framework for writing and verifying compiler passes of Qiskit, the most widely-used quantum compiler. To our knowledge, CertiQ is the first effort enabling the verification of real-world quantum compiler passes in a mostly-automated manner. Compiler passes written in the CertiQ interface with annotations can be used to generate verification conditions, as well as the executable code that can be integrated into Qiskit. CertiQ introduces the quantum circuit calculus to enable the efficient checking of equivalence of quantum circuits by encoding such a checking p…
As state-of-the-art quantum computers are capable of running increasingly complex algorithms, the need for automated methods to design and test potential applications rises. Equivalence checking of quantum circuits is an important, yet hardly automated, task in the development of the quantum software stack. Recently, new methods have been proposed that tackle this problem from widely different perspectives. One of them is based on the ZX-calculus, a graphical rewriting system for quantum computing. However, the power and capability of this equivalence checking method has barely been explored. …
The ZX-calculus is a graphical language for reasoning about ZX-diagrams, a type of tensor networks that can represent arbitrary linear maps between qubits. Using the ZX-calculus, we can intuitively reason about quantum theory, and optimise and validate quantum circuits. In this paper we introduce PyZX, an open source library for automated reasoning with large ZX-diagrams. We give a brief introduction to the ZX-calculus, then show how PyZX implements methods for circuit optimisation, equality validation, and visualisation and how it can be used in tandem with other software. We end with a set o…
Quantum resource analysis is crucial for designing quantum circuits as well as assessing the viability of arbitrary (error-corrected) quantum computations. To this end, we introduce QUANTIFY, which is an open-source framework for the quantitative analysis of quantum circuits. It is based on Google Cirq and is developed with Clifford+T circuits in mind, and it includes the necessary methods to handle Toffoli+H and more generalised controlled quantum gates, too. Key features of QUANTIFY include: (1) analysis and optimisation methods which are compatible with the surface code, (2) choice between …
Efficient compilation of quantum algorithms is vital in the era of Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) devices. While multiple open-source quantum compilation and circuit optimization frameworks are available, e.g. IBM Qiskit, CQC Tket, Google Cirq, Rigetti Quilc, PyZX, their relative performance is not always clear to a quantum programmer. The growth of complexity and diversity of quantum circuit compilation algorithms creates a demand for a dedicated tool for cross-benchmarking and profiling of inner workflow of the quantum compilation stack. We present an open-source software package, A…

Quantum computing is an emerging technology that has the potential to revolutionize fields such as cryptography, machine learning, optimization, and quantum simulation. However, a major challenge in the realization of quantum algorithms on actual machines is ensuring that the gates in a quantum circuit (i.e., corresponding operations) match the topology of a targeted architecture so that the circuit can be executed while, at the same time, the resulting costs (e.g., in terms of the number of additionally introduced gates, fidelity, etc.) are kept low. This is known as the quantum circuit mappi…
We introduce a framework for the formal specification and verification of quantum circuits based on the Feynman path integral. Our formalism, built around exponential sums of polynomial functions, provides a structured and natural way of specifying quantum operations, particularly for quantum implementations of classical functions. Verification of circuits over all levels of the Clifford hierarchy with respect to either a specification or reference circuit is enabled by a novel rewrite system for exponential sums with free variables. Our algorithm is further shown to give a polynomial-time dec…

Of course, classical electrical engineering provides essential foundations and serves to illustrate the degree of sophistication that can be achieved in automated circuit design. In this paper we explore the utility of term rewriting approaches to the transformation of quantum circuit models, specifically applying rewrite rules for both reduction/verification and robustness analysis of photonic circuits for autonomous quantum …
We present a novel automated technique for parallelizing quantum circuits via forward and backward translation to measurement-based quantum computing patterns and analyze the trade off in terms of depth and space complexity. As a result we distinguish a class of polynomial depth circuits that can be parallelized to logarithmic depth while adding only polynomial many auxiliary qubits. In particular, we provide for the first time a full characterization of patterns with flow of arbitrary depth, based on the notion of influencing paths and a simple rewriting system on the angles of the measuremen…

Functional validation is necessary to detect any errors during quantum computation. There are promising avenues to debug quantum circuits using runtime assertions. However, the existing approaches rely on the expertise of the verification engineers to manually design and insert the assertions in suitable locations. In this paper, we propose automated generation and placement of quantum assertions based on static analysis and random sampling of quantum circuits. Specifically, this paper makes two important contributions. We automatically uncover special properties of a quantum circuit, such as …
