It is nontrivial to achieve global zero-error regulation for uncertain nonlinear systems. The underlying problem becomes even more challenging if mismatched uncertainties and unknown time-varying control gain are involved, yet certain performance specifications are also pursued. In this work, we present an adaptive control method, which, without the persistent excitation (PE) condition, is able to ensure global zero-error regulation with guaranteed output performance for parametric strict-feedback systems involving fast time-varying parameters in the feedback path and input path. The development of our control scheme benefits from generalized t-dependent and x-dependent functions, a novel coordinate transformation and "congelation of variables" method. Both theoretical analysis and numerical simulation verify the effectiveness and benefits of the proposed method.
In this paper a novel approach is presented for control design with guaranteed transient performance for multiple-input multiple-output discrete-time linear polytopic difference inclusions. We establish a theorem that gives necessary and sufficient conditions for the state to evolve from one polyhedral subset of the state-space to another. Then we present an algorithm which constructs a time-varying output feedback law which guarantees that the state evolves within a time-varying polyhedral target-tube specifying the system's desired transient performance. We present generalisations involving …
Real-time optimization with persistent parameter adaptation (ROPA) is an RTO approach, where the steady-state model parameters are updated dynamically using transient measurements. Consequently, we avoid waiting for a steady-state before triggering the optimization cycle, and the steady-state economic optimization can be scheduled at any desired rate. The steady-state wait has been recognized as a fundamental limitation of the traditional RTO approach. In this paper, we implement ROPA on an experimental rig that emulates a subsea oil well network. For comparison, we also implement traditional …
This paper addresses the main goal of using reset control in precision motion control systems, breaking of the well-known "Waterbed effect". A new architecture for reset elements will be introduced which has a continuous output signal as opposed to conventional reset elements. A steady-state precision study is presented, showing the steady-state precision is preserved while the peak of sensitivity is reduced. The architecture is then used for a "Constant in Gain Lead in Phase" (CgLp) element and a numerical analysis on transient response shows a significant improvement in transient response. I…
We present a model-based real-time method to monitor a counterflow heat exchanger's thermal performance for all operating conditions. A first principle reference model that describes the reference counterflow process in an accurate manner is derived first. Real gas behavior is taken into account. Without simplifications, the respective equations must be solved in an iterative, computationally expensive manner, which prohibits their use for real-time monitoring purposes. Therefore, we propose one-step-solvable model equations, resulting in an approximate but quick model, which is able to track …
With the large-scale hybrid AC-DC grids coming into being, electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation is required to accurately describe the dynamics of systems. However, the EMT steady-state initialization for hybrid AC-DC system is difficult and time-consuming when the system scale is huge. In order to provide a stable snapshot for EMT simulation with nonlinear components and black-box components, this paper proposes a general initialization scheme for EMT simulation (EMT-GIS) which can be implemented in the electromagnetic transient program (EMTP)-type simulators. First, an integrated power…
This paper presents a new prescribed performance control scheme for the attitude tracking of the three degree-of-freedom (3-DOF) helicopter system with lumped disturbances under mechanical constraints. First, a novel prescribed performance function is defined to guarantee that the tracking error performance has a small overshoot in the transient process and converges to an arbitrary small region within a predetermined time in the steady-state process without knowing the initial tracking error in advance. Then, based on the novel prescribed performance function, an error transformation combined…
A novel control design framework is proposed for a class of non-Lipschitz nonlinear systems with quantized states, meanwhile prescribed transient performance and lower control design complexity could be guaranteed. Firstly, different from all existing control methods for systems with state quantization, global stability of strict-feedback nonlinear systems is achieved without requiring the condition that the nonlinearities of the system model satisfy global Lipschitz continuity. Secondly, a novel barrier function-free prescribed performance control (BFPPC) method is proposed, which can guarant…
Unlike conventional generators, inverter-based generation do not possess any rotational inertia. While grid-forming inverters can synthesize small (virtual) inertia via advanced feedback control loops, additional control mechanisms are needed to ensure safety and security of the power grid during transients. In this paper, we propose novel real-time safety-constrained feedback controllers ("safety filters") for droop-based (grid-forming) inverters to ensure transient security of the grid. The safety filter acts as a buffer between the network operational layer and the inverter-control layer, a…

Nowadays, liquid rocket engines use closed-loop control at most near steady operating conditions. The control of the transient phases is traditionally performed in open-loop due to highly nonlinear system dynamics. This situation is unsatisfactory, in particular for reusable engines. The open-loop control system cannot provide optimal engine performance due to external disturbances or the degeneration of engine components over time. In this paper, we study a deep reinforcement learning approach for optimal control of a generic gas-generator engine's continuous start-up phase. It is shown that …
