We review the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem and its variants, which are no-go theorems that state that a quantum many-body system with certain conditions cannot have a locally-unique gapped ground state. We restrict ourselves to one-dimensional quantum spin systems and discuss both the generalized Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem for models with U(1) symmetry and the extended Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem for models with discrete symmetry. We also discuss the implication of the same arguments to systems on the infinite cylinder, both with the periodic boundary conditions and with the spiral boundary conditions.
For models with U(1) symmetry, we here present a rearranged version of the original proof of Lieb, Schultz, and Mattis based on the twist operator. As the title suggests we take a modern topological point of view and prove the generalized Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem by making use of a topological index (which coincides with the filling factor). By a topological index, we mean an index that characterizes a locally-unique gapped ground state and is invariant under continuous (or smooth) modification of the ground state.
For models with discrete symmetry, we describe the basic idea of the most general proof based on the topological index introduced in the context of symmetry-protected topological phases. We start from background materials such as the classification of projective representations of the symmetry group.
We also review the notion that we call a locally-unique gapped ground state of a quantum spin system on an infinite lattice and present basic theorems. This notion turns out to be natural and useful from the physicists' point of view.
We have tried to make the present article readable and almost self-contained. We only assume basic knowledge about quantum spin systems.
We prove that a quantum spin chain with half-odd-integral spin cannot have a unique ground state with a gap, provided that the interaction is short ranged, translation invariant, and possesses time-reversal symmetry or ${\mathbb Z}_2 \times {\mathbb Z}_2$ symmetry (i.e., the symmetry with respect to the $π$ rotations of spins about the three orthogonal axes). The proof is based on the deep analogy between the matrix product state formulation and the representation of the Cuntz algebra in the von Neumann algebra $π({\mathcal A}_{R})''$ constructed from the ground state restricted to the right h…
We propose a geometric {approach to Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem for} quantum many-body systems with discrete spin-rotation symmetries and lattice inversion or rotation symmetry, but without translation symmetry assumed. Under symmetry-twisting on a $(d-1)$-dimensional plane, we find that any $d$-dimensional inversion-symmetric spin system possesses a doubly degenerate spectrum when it hosts a half-integer spin at the inversion-symmetric point. We also show that any rotation-symmetric generalized spin model with a projective representation at the rotation center has a similar degeneracy under s…
Lieb, Schultz and Mattis (LSM) studied the S=1/2 XXZ spin chain. Theorems of LSM's paper can be applied to broader models. In the original LSM theorem it was assumed the nonfrustrating system. However, reconsidering the LSM theorem, we can extend the LSM theorem for frustrating systems. Next, several researchers have tried to extend the LSM theorem for excited states. In the cases $S^{z}_{T} = \pm 1,\pm 2 \cdots$, the lowest energy eigenvalues are continuous for wave number $q$. But we find that their proofs are insufficient, and we improve them. In addition, we can prove the LSM theory withou…
We introduce a new boundary condition which renders the flux-insertion argument for the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis type theorems in two or higher dimensions free from the specific choice of system sizes. It also enables a formulation of the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis type theorems in arbitrary dimensions in terms of the anomaly in field theories of $1+1$ dimensions with a bulk correspondence as a BF-theory in 2+1 dimensions. Furthermore, we apply the anomaly-based formulation to the constraints on a half-filled spinless fermion on a square lattice with $π$ flux, utilizing time-reversal, the magnetic transla…
We formulate and prove the local twist version of the Yamanaka-Oshikawa-Affleck theorem, an extension of the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem, for one-dimensional systems of quantum particles or spins. We can treat almost any translationally invariant system wth global $U(1)$ symmetry. Time-reversal or inversion symmetry is not assumed. It is proved that, when the "filling factor" is not an integer, a ground state without any long-range order must be accompanied by low-lying excitations whose number grows indefinitely as the system size is increased. The result is closely related to the absence of …
We discuss quantum many-body systems with lattice translation and discrete onsite symmetries. We point out that, under a boundary condition twisted by a symmetry operation, there is an exact degeneracy of ground states if the unit cell forms a projective representation of the onsite discrete symmetry. Based on the quantum transfer matrix formalism, we show that, if the system is gapped, the ground-state degeneracy under the twisted boundary condition also implies a ground-state (quasi-)degeneracy under the periodic boundary conditions. This gives a compelling evidence for the recently proposed…
In this study, we consider one-dimension (1D) quantum spin systems with the translation and discrete symmetries (spin reversal, space inversion and time reversal symmetries). By combining the continuous U(1) symmetry with the discrete symmetries and using the extended Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem \cite{Lieb-Schultz-Mattis-1961}\cite{Nomura-Morishige-Isoyama-2015}, we investigate the relation between the ground states, energy spectra and symmetries. For half-integer spin cases, we generalize the dimer and Néel concepts using the discrete symmetries, and we can reconcile the LSM theorem with the …
The theorem of Lieb, Schultz and Mattis (LSM), which states that the S=1/2 XXZ spin chain has gapless or degenerate ground states, can be applied to broader models. Independently, Kolb considered the relation between the wave number $q$ and the twisting boundary condition, and he obtained a similar result as LSM. However, in frustrating cases it is known that there exist several exceptions for the assumption of the unique lowest state for the finite size, which is important in the traditional LSM theorem. In our previous paper, without the assumption of the uniqueness, we have extended the LSM…
We present the first systematic study of the filling constraints to realize a `trivial' insulator symmetric under magnetic space group $\mathcal{M}$. The filling $ν$ must be an integer multiple of $m^{\mathcal{M}}$ to avoid spontaneous symmetry breaking or fractionalization in gapped phases. We improve the value of $m^{\mathcal{M}}$ in the literature and prove the tightness of the constraint for the majority of magnetic space groups. The result may shed light on the material search of exotic magnets with fractionalization.
We prove ferromagnetic ordering of energy levels for XXX Heisenberg chains of any spin and XXZ spin chains with all spins equal to 1/2. Ferromagnetic ordering means that the minimum energies in the invariant subspaces of fixed total spin are monotone decreasing as a function of the total spin. This result provides a ferromagnetic analogue of the well-known theorem by Lieb and Mattis about ordering of energy levels in antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic systems on bipartite graphs.
In this paper we address the question of the existence of a spectral gap in a class of local Hamiltonians. These Hamiltonians have the following properties: their ground states are known exactly; all equal-time correlation functions of local operators are short-ranged; and correlation functions of certain non-local operators are critical. A variational argument shows gaplessness with $ω\propto k^2$ at critical points defined by the absence of certain terms in the Hamiltonian, which is remarkable because equal-time correlation functions of local operators remain short-ranged. We call such criti…
Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) theorems provide powerful constraints on the emergibility problem, i.e. whether a quantum phase or phase transition can emerge in a many-body system. We derive the topological partition functions that characterize the LSM constraints in spin systems with $G_s\times G_{int}$ symmetry, where $G_s$ is an arbitrary space group in one or two spatial dimensions, and $G_{int}$ is any internal symmetry whose projective representations are classified by $\mathbb{Z}_2^k$ with $k$ an integer. We then apply these results to study the emergibility of a class of exotic quantum crit…

We study the ground-state properties of the S=1/2 Heisenberg models on the quasi-onedimensional kagome strip lattices by the exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods. The models with two different strip widths share the same lattice structure in their inner part with the spatially anisotropic two-dimensional kagome lattice. When there is no magnetic frustration, the well-known Lieb-Mattis ferrimagnetic state is realized in both models. When the strength of magnetic frustration is increased, on the other hand, the Lieb-Mattis-type ferrimagnetism is collapsed. We fi…
We review some recent results that express or rely on the locality properties of the dynamics of quantum spin systems. In particular, we present a slightly sharper version of the recently obtained Lieb-Robinson bound on the group velocity for such systems on a large class of metric graphs. Using this bound we provide expressions of the quasi-locality of the dynamics in various forms, present a proof of the Exponential Clustering Theorem, and discuss a multi-dimensional Lieb-Schultz-Mattis Theorem.
We consider charge transport for interacting many-body systems with a gapped ground state subspace which is finitely degenerate and topologically ordered. To any locality-preserving, charge-conserving unitary that preserves the ground state space, we associate an index that is an integer multiple of $1/p$, where $p$ is the ground state degeneracy. We prove that the index is additive under composition of unitaries. This formalism gives rise to several applications: fractional quantum Hall conductance, a fractional Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem that generalizes the standard LSM to systems where th…
We propose an index $\mathcal{I}_G$ which characterizes the degree of ingappability, namely the difficulty to induce a unique ground state with a nonvanishing excitation gap, in the presence of a symmetry $G$. $\mathcal{I}_G$ represents the dimension of the subspace of ambient uniquely-gapped in the entire $G$-invariant "theory space". The celebrated Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem corresponds, in our formulation, to the case $\mathcal{I}_G=0$ (completely ingappable) for the symmetry $G$ including the lattice translation symmetry. We illustrate the usefulness of the index by discussing the phase d…
We suggest a general rule for the shift quantum numbers k of the relative ground states of antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin rings. This rule generalizes well-known results of Marshall, Peierls, Lieb, Schultz, and Mattis for even rings. Our rule is confirmed by numerical investigations and rigorous proofs for special cases, including systems with a Haldane gap. Implications for the total spin quantum number S of relative ground states are discussed as well as generalizations to the XXZ model.
The physics underlying the magnetization process of quantum antiferromagnets is revisited from the viewpoint of geometric phases. A continuum variant of the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis-type approach to the problem is put forth, where the commensurability condition of Oshikawa {\it et al} derives from a Berry connection formulation of the system's crystal momentum. %, similar to that developed by Haldane for ferromagnets. %Building on the physical picture which arises, We then go on to formulate an effective field theory which can deal with higher dimensional cases as well. We find that a topological t…
We discuss expectation values of the twist operator $U$ appearing in the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem (or the polarization operator for periodic systems) in excited states of the one-dimensional correlated systems $z_L^{(q,\pm)}\equiv\braket{Ψ_{q/2}^{\pm}|U^q|Ψ_{q/2}^{\pm}}$, where $\ket{Ψ_{p}^{\pm}}$ denotes the excited states given by linear combinations of momentum $2pk_{\rm F}$ with parity $\pm 1$. We found that $z_L^{(q,\pm)}$ gives universal values $\pm 1/2$ on the Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) fixed point, and its signs identify the topology of the dominant phases. Therefore, this expectation …
We have recently shown that there is a limit to quantum coherence in many-particle spin qubits due to spontaneous symmetry breaking. These results were derived for the Lieb-Mattis spin model. Here we will show that the underlying mechanism of decoherence in systems with spontaneous symmetry breaking is in fact more general. We present here a generic route to finding the decoherence time associated with spontaneous symmetry breaking in many particle qubits, and subsequently we apply this approach to two model systems, indicating how the continuous symmetries in these models are spontaneously br…
We discuss the polarization amplitude of quantum spin systems in one dimension. In particular, we closely investigate it in gapless phases of those systems based on the two-dimensional conformal field theory. The polarization amplitude is defined as the ground-state average of a twist operator which induces a large gauge transformation attaching the unit amount of the U(1) flux to the system. We show that the polarization amplitude under the periodic boundary condition is sensitive to perturbations around the fixed point of the renormalization-group flow rather than the fixed point itself even…
Magnetic properties of the ferrimagnetic mixed spin-(1/2,S) Heisenberg chains are examined using quantum Monte Carlo simulations for two different quantum spin numbers S = 1 and 3/2. The calculated magnetization curves at finite temperatures are confronted with zero-temperature magnetization data obtained within density-matrix renormalization group method, which imply an existence of two quantum critical points determining a breakdown of the gapped Lieb-Mattis ferrimagnetic phase and Tomonaga-Luttinger spin-liquid phase, respectively. While a square-root behavior of the magnetization accompany…
We continue recent efforts to discover examples of deconfined quantum criticality in one-dimensional models. In this work we investigate the transition between a $\mathbb{Z}_3$ ferromagnet and a phase with valence bond solid (VBS) order in a spin chain with $\mathbb{Z}_3\times\mathbb{Z}_3$ global symmetry. We study a model with alternating projective representations on the sites of the two sublattices, allowing the Hamiltonian to connect to an exactly solvable point having VBS order with the character of SU(3)-invariant singlets. Such a model does not admit a Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem typica…
