We study the paradigmatic spin-1 XY chain under open boundary conditions, which hosts exact quantum many-body scars generated by an emergent Spectrum Generating Algebra (SGA). We show that the scar subspace possesses a symmetry-protected trivial (SPt) character that we attribute to a hidden $Z_{2}\times Z_{2}$ symmetry of another model, namely the commutant Hamiltonian, for which the scars are the ground states. We construct a Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) type twist operator, which, for scar states, takes the value $-1,$ and, for ergodic states, approaches zero in the thermodynamic limit. A complementary understanding of the stability of the scars under different perturbations is obtained by analyzing the Loschmidt echo and Quantum Fisher Information (QFI) of the scars. Finite-size scaling analysis of the QFI reveals that the scars are much more sensitive to perturbations as compared to the nearby thermal states. Based on the analysis of QFI and different LSM twist operators, we obtain a classification of different SGA-preserving and SGA-breaking perturbations.
A quantum many-body scar system usually contains a special non-thermal subspace (approximately) decoupled from the rest of the Hilbert space. In this work, we propose a general structure called deformed symmetric spaces for the decoupled subspaces hosting quantum many-body scars, which are irreducible sectors of simple Lie groups transformed by matrix-product operators (or projected entangled pair operators), of which the entanglement entropies are proved to obey sub-volume-law scaling and thus violate the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. A deformed symmetric space, in general, is require…
In quantum systems, a subspace spanned by degenerate eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian may have higher symmetries than those of the Hamiltonian itself. When this enhanced-symmetry group can be generated from local operators, we call it a quasi-symmetry group. When the group is a Lie group, an external field coupled to certain generators of the quasi-symmetry group lifts the degeneracy, and results in exactly periodic dynamics within the degenerate subspace, namely the many-body-scar dynamics (given that Hamiltonian is non-integrable). We provide two related schemes for constructing one-dimension…
We propose a class of non-integrable quantum spin chain models that exhibit quantum many-body scars even in the presence of disorder. With the use of the so-called Onsager symmetry, we construct such scarred models for arbitrary spin quantum number $ S $. There are two types of scar states, namely, coherent states associated to an Onsager-algebra element and one-magnon scar states. While both of them are highly-excited states, they have area-law entanglement and can be written as a matrix product state. Therefore, they explicitly violate the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. We also invest…
Aspects of Hilbert space fragmentation in the quantum East model: fragmentation, subspace-restricted quantum scars, and effects of density-density interactions

Motivated by recent experimental observations of coherent many-body revivals in a constrained Rydberg atom chain, we construct a weak quasi-local deformation of the Rydberg blockade Hamiltonian, which makes the revivals virtually perfect. Our analysis suggests the existence of an underlying non-integrable Hamiltonian which supports an emergent SU(2)-spin dynamics within a small subspace of the many-body Hilbert space. We show that such perfect dynamics necessitates the existence of atypical, nonergodic energy eigenstates - quantum many-body scars. Furthermore, using these insights, we construc…
Although entanglement is a key resource for quantum-enhanced metrology, not all entanglement is useful. For example in the process of many-body thermalisation, bipartite entanglement grows rapidly, naturally saturating to a volume law. This type of entanglement generation is ubiquitous in nature but has no known application in most quantum technologies. The generation, stabilisation and exploitation of genuine multipartite entanglement, on the other hand, is far more elusive yet highly desirable for metrological applications. Recently it has been shown that quantum many-body scars can have ext…
We present a one-dimensional multi-component model, known to be partially integrable when restricted to the subspaces made of only two components. By constructing fully anti-symmetrized bases, we find integrable excited eigenstates corresponding to the totally anti-symmetric irreducible representation of the permutation operator in the otherwise non-integrable subspaces. We establish rigorously the breakdown of integrability in those subspaces by showing explicitly the violation of the Yang-Baxter's equation. We further solve the constraints from Yang-Baxter's equation to find exceptional mome…
We construct a family of three-body spin-1/2 Hamiltonians with a super-extensive set of infinitely long-lived multi-magnon states. A magnon in each such state carries either quasi-momentum zero or fixed $p_0\neq$ 0, and energy $Ω$ . These multi-magnon states provide an archetypal example of quantum many-body scars: they are eigenstates at finite energy density that violate the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis, and lead to persistent oscillations in local observables in certain quench experiments. On the technical side, we demonstrate the systematic derivation of scarred Hamiltonians that s…
Scar states are special many-body eigenstates that weakly violate the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH). Using the explicit formalism of the Lanczos algorithm, usually known as the forward scattering approximation in this context, we compute the Krylov state (spread) complexity of typical states generated by the time evolution of the PXP Hamiltonian, hosting such states. We show that the complexity for the Neel state revives in an approximate sense, while complexity for the generic ETH-obeying state always increases. This can be attributed to the approximate SU(2) structure of the cor…
To provide a physical example of quantum scars, we study the many-body scars in the spin-1 Kitaev chain where the so-called PXP Hamiltonian is exactly embedded in the spectra. Regarding the conserved quantities, the Hilbert space is fragmented into disconnected subspaces and we explore the associated constrained dynamics. The continuous revivals of the fidelity and the entanglement entropy when the initial state is prepared in $\vert\mathbb{Z}_k\rangle$ ($k=2,3$) state illustrate the essential physics of the PXP model. We study the quantum phase transitions in the one-dimensional spin-1 Kitaev…
Persistent oscillatory dynamics in non-equilibrium many-body systems is a tantalizing manifestation of ergodicity breakdown that continues to attract much attention. Recent works have focused on two classes of such systems: discrete time crystals and quantum many-body scars (QMBS). While both systems host oscillatory dynamics, its origin is expected to be fundamentally different: discrete time crystal is a phase of matter which spontaneously breaks the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry of the external periodic drive, while QMBS span a subspace of non-thermalizing eigenstates forming an su(2) algebra rep…
We present a class of Hamiltonians $H$ for which a sector of the Hilbert space invariant under a Lie group $G$, which is not a symmetry of $H$, possesses the essential properties of many-body scar states. These include the absence of thermalization and the "revivals" of special initial states in time evolution. Some of the scar states found in earlier work may be viewed as special cases of our construction. A particular class of examples concerns interacting spin-1/2 fermions on a lattice consisting of $N$ sites (it includes deformations of the Fermi-Hubbard model as special cases), and we sho…
Quantum-simulator hardware promises new insights into problems from particle and nuclear physics. A major challenge is to reproduce gauge invariance, as violations of this quintessential property of lattice gauge theories can have dramatic consequences, e.g., the generation of a photon mass in quantum electrodynamics. Here, we introduce an experimentally friendly method to protect gauge invariance in $\mathrm{U}(1)$ lattice gauge theories against coherent errors in a controllable way. Our method employs only single-body energy-penalty terms, thus enabling practical implementations. As we deriv…
