In this paper, we consider the pseudoharmonic heat flow with small initial horizontal energy and give the existence of pseudoharmonic maps from closed pseudo-Hermitian manifolds to closed Riemannian manifolds.
In this paper, we give some rigidity results for both harmonic and pseudoharmonic maps from CR manifolds into Riemannian manifolds or Kahler manifolds. Some basicity, pluriharmonicity and Siu-Sampson type results are established for both harmonic maps and pseudoharmonic maps.
In this paper, we derive the second variation formula of pseudoharmonic maps into any pseudo-Hermitian manifolds. When the target manifold is an isometric embedded CR manifold in complex Euclidean space or a pseudo-Hermitian immersed submanifold in Heisenberg group, we give some conditions on Weingarten maps to obtain some unstability of pseudoharmonic maps between these pseudo-Hermitian manifolds.
In this paper, we derive a sub-gradient estimate for pseudoharmonic maps from noncompact complete Sasakian manifolds which satisfy CR sub-Laplace comparison property, to simply-connected Riemannian manifolds with nonpositive sectional curvature. As its application, we obtain some Liouville theorems for pseudoharmonic maps. In the Appendix, we modify the method and apply it to harmonic maps from noncompact complete Sasakian manifolds.
In this paper, we consider the heat flow for p-pseudoharmonic maps from a closed Sasakian manifold M into a compact Riemannian manifold N. We prove global existence and asymptotic convergence of the solution for the p-pseudoharmonic map heat flow, provided that the sectional curvature of the target manifold N is nonpositive. Moreover, without the curvature assumption on the target manifold, we obtain global existence and asymptotic convergence of the p-pseudoharmonic map heat flow as well when its initial p-energy is sufficiently small.
We derive Mok-Siu-Yeung type formulas for horizontal maps from compact contact locally sub-symmetric spaces into strictly pseudoconvex CR manifolds and we obtain some rigidity theorems for the horizontal pseudoharmonic maps.
Harmonic morphisms are maps between Riemannian manifolds that pull back harmonic functions to harmonic functions. These maps are characterized as horizontally weakly conformal harmonic maps and they have many interesting links and applications to several areas in mathematics (see the book by Baird and Wood for details). In this paper, we study generalized harmonic morphisms which are defined to be maps between Riemannian manifolds that pull back harmonic functions to biharmonic functions. We obtain some characterizations of generalized harmonic morphisms into a Euclidean space and give two met…
We deform a map into a Riemannian manifold that is horizontal with respect to a submersion onto a non-positively curved manifold and satisfies a Chow condition into a harmonic one through a horizontal homotopy.
Given a $C^1$ planes distribution $P_T$ on all ${\mathbb R}^m$ we consider {\em horizontal $α$-harmonic maps}, $α\ge 1/2$, with respect to such a distribution. These are maps $u\in H^α({\mathbb R}^k,{\mathbb R}^m)$ satisfying $P_T\nabla u=\nabla u$ and $P_T(u)(-Δ)^αu=0$ in ${\mathcal D}'({\mathbb R}^k).$ If the distribution of planes is integrable then we recover the classical case of $α$-harmonic maps with values into a manifold. In this paper we shall focus our attention to the case $α=1/2$ in dimension $1$ and $α=2$ in dimension $2$ and we investigate the regularity of the {\em horizontal $…
In this paper, we investigate critical maps of the horizontal energy functional $E_{H,\widetilde{H}}(f)$ for maps between two pseudo-Hermitian manifolds $(M^{2m+1},H(M),J,θ)$ and $(N^{2n+1},\widetilde{H}(N), \widetilde{J},\widetildeθ)$. These critical maps are referred to as $(H,\widetilde{H})$-harmonic maps. We derive a CR Bochner formula for the horizontal energy density $|df_{H, \widetilde{H}}|^{2}$, and introduce a Paneitz type operator acting on maps to refine the Bochner formula. As a result, we are able to establish some Bochner type theorems for $(H,\widetilde{H})$-harmonic maps. We al…
We study biharmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds with finite energy and finite bi-energy. We show that if the domain is complete and the target of non-positive curvature, then such a map is harmonic. We then give applications to isometric immersions and horizontally conformal submersions.
We study the blow-up analysis and qualitative behavior for a sequence of harmonic maps with free boundary from degenerating bordered Riemann surfaces with uniformly bounded energy. With the help of Pohozaev type constants associated to harmonic maps defined on degenerating collars, including vertical boundary collars and horizontal boundary collars, we establish a generalized energy identity.
We characterise the actions, by holomorphic isometries on a Kähler manifold with zero first Betti number, of an abelian Lie group of dim\geq 2, for which the moment map is horizontally weakly conformal (with respect to some Euclidean structure on the Lie algebra of the group). Furthermore, we study the hyper-Kähler moment map $ϕ$ induced by an abelian Lie group T acting by triholomorphic isometries on a hyper-Kähler manifold M, with zero first Betti number, thus obtaining the following: If dim T=1 then $ϕ$ is a harmonic morphism. Moreover, we illustrate this on the tangent bundle of the comple…
In this paper, we give an estimate of sub-Laplacian of Riemannian distance functions in pseudo-Hermitian geometry which plays a similar role as Laplacian comparison theorem in Riemannian geometry, and deduce a prior horizontal gradient estimate of pseudo-harmonic maps from pseudo-Hermitian manifolds to regular balls of Riemannian manifolds. As an application, Liouville theorem is established under the conditions of nonnegative pseudo-Hermitian Ricci curvature and vanishing pseudo-Hermitian torsion. Moreover, we obtain the existence of pseudo-harmonic maps from complete noncompact pseudo-Hermit…
In this paper, we consider critical maps of a horizontal energy functional for maps from a sub-Riemannian manifold to a Riemannian manifold. These critical maps are referred to as subelliptic harmonic maps. In terms of the subelliptic harmonic map heat flow, we investigate the existence problem for subelliptic harmonic maps. Under the assumption that the target Riemannian manifold has non-positive sectional curvature, we prove some Eells-Sampson type existence results for this flow when the source manifold is either a step-2 sub-Riemannian manifold or a step-r sub-Riemannian manifold whose sub…
In this paper we generalize harmonic maps and morphisms to the \emph{degenerate semi-Riemannian category}, in the case when the manifolds $M$ and $N$ are \emph{stationary} and the map $ϕ:M\to N$ is \emph{radical-preserving}. We characterize geometrically the notion of \emph{(generalized) horizontal (weak) conformality} and we obtain a characterization for (generalized) harmonic morphisms in terms of (generalized) harmonic maps.
We show that a natural class of twistorial maps gives a pattern for apparently different geometric maps, such as, $(1,1)$-geodesic immersions from $(1,2)$-symplectic almost Hermitian manifolds and pseudo horizontally conformal submersions with totally geodesic fibres for which the associated almost CR-structure is integrable. Along the way, we construct for each constant curvature Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$, of dimension $m$, a family of twistor spaces $\bigl\{Z_r(M)\bigr\}_{1\leq r<\tfrac12m}$ such that $Z_r(M)$ parametrizes naturally the set of pairs $(P,J)$, where $P$ is a totally geodesic…
In arbitrary Carnot groups we study intrinsic graphs of maps with horizontal target. These graphs are $C^1_H$ regular exactly when the map is uniformly intrinsically differentiable. Our first main result characterizes the uniformly intrinsic differentiability by means of Hölder properties along the projections of left-invariant vector fields on the graph. We strengthen the result in step-2 Carnot groups for intrinsic real-valued maps by only requiring horizontal regularity. We remark that such a refinement is not possible already in the easiest step-3 group. As a by-product of independent inte…
We introduce the notions of h-conformal slant submersions and almost h-conformal slant submersions from almost quaternionic Hermitian manifolds onto Riemannian manifolds as a generalization of Riemannian submersions, horizontally conformal submersions, slant submersions, h-slant submersions, almost h-slant submersion and conformal slant submersions. We investigate several properties of these including the integrability of distributions, the geometry of foliations and the conditions for such maps to be totally geodesic. Further we give some examples of such maps.
Let $(M,H,g_H;g)$ be a sub-Riemannian manifold and $(N,h)$ be a Riemannian manifold. For a smooth map $u: M \to N$, we consider the energy functional $E_G(u) = \frac{1}{2} \int_M[|\mathrm{d}u_H|^2-2G(u)] \mathrm{d}V_M$, where $\mathrm{d}u_H$ is the horizontal differential of $u$, $G:N\to \mathbb{R}$ is a smooth function on $N$. The critical maps of $E_G(u)$ are referred to as subelliptic harmonic maps with potential $G$. In this paper, we investigate the existence problem for subelliptic harmonic maps with potentials by a subelliptic heat flow. Assuming that the target Riemannian manifold has …
f-Harmonic maps were first introduced and studied by Lichnerowicz in \cite{Li} (see also Section 10.20 in Eells-Lemaire's report \cite{EL}). In this paper, we study a subclass of f-harmonic maps called f-harmonic morphisms which pull back local harmonic functions to local f-harmonic functions. We prove that a map between Riemannian manifolds is an f-harmonic morphism if and only if it is a horizontally weakly conformal f-harmonic map. This generalizes the well-known Fuglede-Ishihara characterization for harmonic morphisms. Some properties and many examples as well as some non-existence of f-ha…
In this article we study the validity of the Whitney $C^1$ extension property for horizontal curves in sub-Riemannian manifolds endowed with 1-jets that satisfy a first-order Taylor expansion compatibility condition. We first consider the equiregular case, where we show that the extension property holds true whenever a suitable non-singularity property holds for the input-output maps on the Carnot groups obtained by nilpotent approximation. We then discuss the case of sub-Riemannian manifolds with singular points and we show that all step-2 manifolds satisfy the $C^1$ extension property. We co…
We propose a new notion called \emph{infinity-harmonic maps}between Riemannain manifolds. These are natural generalizations of the well known notion of infinity harmonic functions and are also the limiting case of $p$% -harmonic maps as $p\to \infty $. Infinity harmoncity appears in many familiar contexts. For example, metric projection onto the orbit of an isometric group action from a tubular neighborhood is infinity harmonic. Unfortunately, infinity-harmonicity is not preserved under composition. Those infinity harmonic maps that always preserve infinity harmonicity under pull back are call…
We introduce slant Riemannian maps from Riemannian manifolds to almost Hermitian manifolds as a generalization of slant immersions, invariant Riemannian maps and anti-invariant Riemannian maps. We give examples, obtain characterizations and investigate the harmonicity of such maps. We also obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for slant Riemannian maps to be totally geodesic. Moreover we relate the notion of slant Riemannian maps to the notion of pseudo horizontally weakly conformal maps which are useful for proving various complex-analytic properties of stable harmonic maps from complex …
In this paper, we first study the $α-$energy functional, Euler-Lagrange operator and $α$-stress energy tensor. Second, it is shown that the critical points of $α-$ energy functional are explicitly related to harmonic maps through conformal deformation. In addition, an $α-$harmonic map is constructed from any smooth map between Riemannian manifolds under certain assumptions. Next, we determine the conditions under which the fibers of horizontally conformal $α-$ harmonic maps are minimal submanifolds. Then, the stability of any $α-$harmonic map from a Riemannian manifold to a Riemannian manifold…
We consider solutions of Lagrangian variational problems with linear constraints on the derivative. These solutions are given by curves $γ$ in a differentiable manifold $M$ that are everywhere tangent to a smooth distribution $\mathcal D$ on $M$; such curves are called horizontal. We study the manifold structure of the set $Ω_{P,Q}(M,\mathcal D)$ of horizontal curves that join two submanifolds $P$ and $Q$ of $M$. We consider an action functional $\mathcal L$ defined on $Ω_{P,Q}(M,\mathcal D)$ associated to a time-dependent Lagrangian defined on $\mathcal D$. If the Lagrangian satisfies a suita…
We prove the equivalence of several natural notions of conformal maps between sub-Riemannian manifolds. Our main contribution is in the setting of those manifolds that support a suitable regularity theory for subelliptic $p$-Laplacian operators. For such manifolds we prove a Liouville-type theorem, i.e., 1-quasiconformal maps are smooth. In particular, we prove that contact manifolds support the suitable regularity. The main new technical tools are a sub-Riemannian version of p-harmonic coordinates and a technique of propagation of regularity from horizontal layers.
Methods from the geometry of nonholonomic manifolds and Lagrange-Finsler spaces are applied in fractional calculus with Caputo derivatives and for elaborating models of fractional gravity and fractional Lagrange mechanics. The geometric data for such models are encoded into (fractional) bi-Hamiltonian structures and associated solitonic hierarchies. The constructions yield horizontal/vertical pairs of fractional vector sine-Gordon equations and fractional vector mKdV equations when the hierarchies for corresponding curve fractional flows are described in explicit forms by fractional wave maps …
Given a manifold $M$ and a proper sub-bundle $Δ\subset TM$, we study homotopy properties of the horizontal base-point free loop space $Λ$, i.e. the space of absolutely continuous maps $γ:S^1\to M$ whose velocities are constrained to $Δ$ (for example: legendrian knots in a contact manifold). A key technical ingredient for our study is the proof that the base-point map $F:Λ\to M$ (the map associating to every loop its base-point) is a Hurewicz fibration for the $W^{1,2}$ topology on $Λ$. Using this result we show that, even if the space $Λ$ might have deep singularities (for example: constant lo…
