Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) is an essential long range magnetic interaction between magnetic impurities or magnetic layered structures, the magnitude of which oscillates with the distance ($\mathrm{R}$) between them. We have investigated the RKKY interaction between two magnetic impurities in both time-reversal and inversion symmetry broken Weyl semimetals (WSMs) where the energy dispersion is tilted in momentum space and the momentum of the conduction electron is locked with the pseudo-spin. Two important features are revealed, firstly, at the small tilt limit, we show that the RKKY coupling varies quadratically with the tilt parameter and strikingly, at large separation distance $\mathrm{R}$, the coupling decays as $1/\mathrm{R}$ compared to the conventional of $1/\mathrm{R}^{3}$ dependence exhibited by WSMs with non-tilted dispersion. The slower decay by two orders i.e. ($1/\mathrm{R}$ as opposed to $1/\mathrm{R}^{3}$) of the RKKY coupling is significant for maintaining long range RKKY coupling. Secondly, the RKKY coupling exhibits an anisotropy with respect to the angle between the tilt direction ($\mathbf{w}$) and the separation direction $\mathbf{R}$ unlike the case of non-tilted WSMs which exhibit isotropic RKKY coupling. Consequently, the RKKY coupling in tilted WSMs alternately favours ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic orders and vice-versa with the change of the angle. Our results are derived analytically and verified by numerical calculations based on realistic parameter values.
We calculated the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between the magnetic impurities mediated by electrons in nanoribbons. It was shown that the RKKY interaction is strongly dependent on the width of the nanoribbon and the transverse positions of the impurities. The transverse confinement of electrons is responsible for the above size effect of the RKKY interaction. It provides a potential way to control the RKKY interaction by changing nanostructure geometry.
In this letter, we demonstrate switching of nanomagnets through RKKY interactions in topological insulator-based magnetoelectric devices. The switching speed is dependent on the size of the ferromagnets.
In this letter, we consider through simulation Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interactions between nanomagnets sitting on a conductive surface, and voltage-controlled gating thereof for low-energy switching of nanomagnets for possible memory and nonvolatile logic applications. For specificity, we consider nanomagnets with perpendicular anisotropy on a three-dimensional topological insulator. We model the possibility and dynamics of RKKY-based switching of one nanomagnet by coupling to one or more nanomagnets of set orientation. Applications for both memory and nonvolatile logic are consi…
The two dimensionality plus the linear band structure of graphene leads to new behavior of the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction, which is the interaction between two magnetic moments mediated by the electrons of the host crystal. We study this interaction from linear response theory. There are two equivalent methods both of which may be used for the calculation of the susceptibility, one involving the integral over a product of two Green's functions and the second that involves the excitations between occupied and unoccupied states, which was followed in the original work of Ru…
We theoretically demonstrate the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction between magnetic impurities that is mediated by the Weyl fermions embedded inside a three-dimensional Weyl semimetal (WSM). The WSM is characterized by a pair of Weyl points separated in the momentum space. Using the Green's function method and a two-band model, we show that four terms contribute to the magnetic impurity interaction in the WSM phase: the Heisenberg, Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya, spin-frustrated and Ising terms. Except the last term which is vanishingly small in the plane perpendicular to the line connecting two…
A non-interacting electron gas on a one-dimensional ring is considered at finite temperatures. The localized spin is embedded at some point on the ring and it is assumed that the interaction between this spin and the electrons is the exchange interaction being the basis of the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida indirect exchange effect. When the number of electrons is large enough, it turns out that any small but finite interaction radius value can always produce an essential change of the spin density oscillations in comparison with the zero interaction radius traditionally used to model the Ruder…
Carrier-mediated exchange coupling, known as Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction, plays a fundamental role in itinerant ferromagnetism and has great application potentials in spintronics. A recent theorem based on the imaginary-time method shows that the oscillatory RKKY interaction becomes commensurate on bipartite lattice and predicts that the effective exchange coupling is always ferromagnetic for the same sublattice but antiferromagnetic for opposite sublattices. We revisit this important problem by real- and imaginary-time methods and find the theorem misses important contrib…
Magnetically-doped graphene systems are potential candidates for application in future spintronic devices. A key step is to understand the pairwise interactions between magnetic impurities embedded in graphene that are mediated by the graphene conduction electrons. A large number of studies have been undertaken to investigate the indirect exchange, or RKKY, interactions in graphene. Many of these studies report a decay rate faster than expected for a 2-dimensional material and the absence of the usual distance dependent oscillations. In this review we summarize the techniques used to calculate…
We study the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between two contact magnetic impurities placed on bilayer graphene (BLG). We compute the interaction mediated by the carriers of the pristine and biased BLG as well as the conduction electrons of the doped system. The results are obtained from the linear-response expression for the susceptibility written in terms of the integral over lattice Green's functions. For the unbiased system, we obtain some analytical expressions in terms of the Meijer G-functions, which consist of the product of two oscillatory terms, one coming from the i…
We investigate the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida oscillations of the itinerant carrier spin density in a system where those oscillations appear only due to a finite distribution of a localized spin. The system represents a half-infinite one-dimensional quantum wire with a magnetic impurity located at its edge. In contrast to the conventional model of a point-like exchange interaction the itinerant carrier spin density oscillations in this system exist. We {\it analytically} demonstrate that when the radius of the exchange interaction is less than the wave length of the itinerant carriers livin…
We theoretically study the impacts of linear spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction between magnetic impurities in two kinds of three-dimensional noncentrosymmetric systems. It has been found that linear SOCs lead to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and the Ising interaction, in addition to the conventional Heisenberg interaction. These interactions possess distinct range functions from three dimensional electron gases and Dirac/Weyl semimetals. In the weak SOC limit, the Heisenberg interaction dominates over the other two interactions in a moderately l…
The effect of strong singularity in the calculation of range function for the RKKY interaction in 1D electron gas is discussed. The method of handling this singularity is presented. A possible way of avoiding the singularity in the Ruderman-Kittel perturbation theory in 1D is described.
We study the interaction between two magnetic adatom impurities in graphene using the Anderson model. The two-impurity Anderson Hamiltonian is solved numerically by using the quantum Monte Carlo technique. We find that the inter-impurity spin susceptibility is strongly enhanced at low temperatures, significantly diverging from the well-known Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida (RKKY) result which decays as $R^{-3}$.
We have systematically investigated the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between two magnetic impurities in Weyl semimetals with arbitrary monopole charge $Q$. We find that the RKKY interaction becomes intrinsically anisotropic for $Q\geq2$, and its dependence on Fermi energy and impurity separation is directly controlled by the monopole charge. With the increase of $Q$, the RKKY interaction becomes more long-ranged and more anisotropic, which makes interesting magnetic orders easier to form and thus may have important applications in spintronics.
We study the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida (RKKY) interaction mediated by helical edge states in quantum spin hall system. The helical edge states induce an in-plane noncollinear exchange coupling between two local spins, in contrast to the isotropic coupling induced in normal metal. The angle between the two local spins in the ground state depends on the Fermi level. This property may be used to control the angle of spins by tuning the electric gate.
We propose a realization of mechanically tunable Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction in a double quantum dot nanoelectromechanical device. The coupling between spins of two quantum dots suspended above a metallic plate is mediated by conduction electrons. We show that the spin-mechanical interaction can be driven by a slow modulation of charge density in the metallic plate. We propose to use Stuckelberg oscillations as a sensitive tool for detection of the spin and charge states of the coupled quantum dots. Theory of mechanical back action induced by a dynamical spin-spin interaction is …
We revisit the non-collinear exchange coupling across the trilayer magnetic junction mediated by the diluted-magnetic-semiconductor thin film. By numerical approaches, we investigate the spiral angle between the ferromagnetic layers extensively in the parameter space. In contrast to previous study, we discovered the important role of spin relaxation, which tends to favor spiral exchange over the oscillatory Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction. Finally, we discuss the physics origins of these two types of magnetic interactions.
We study theoretically the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction in one- and two-dimensions in presence of a Rashba spin-orbit (SO) coupling. We show that rotation of the spin of conduction electrons due to SO coupling causes a twisted RKKY interaction between localized spins which consists of three different terms: Heisenberg, Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya, and Ising interactions. We also show that the effective spin Hamiltonian reduces to the usual RKKY interaction Hamiltonian in the twisted spin space where the spin quantization axis of one localized spin is rotated.
We theoretically investigate the current-current correlation of the two-dimensional (2D) parabolic Dirac system in hexogonal lattice. The analytical expressions of the random phase approximation (RPA) susceptibility, Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) Hamiltonian, and the diamagnetic orbital susceptibility in noninteracting case base on the density-density or current-current correlation function are derived and quantitatively analyzed. In noninteracting case, the dynamical polarization with- in RPA and spin transverse susceptibility as well as the RKKY interaction (when close to the half-fil…
We calculate the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) response of a quantum wire where at low temperature a self-sustained electron-nuclear spin order is created. Our model includes the electron mediated Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) exchange, electron spin-orbit interactions, nuclear dipolar interactions, and the static and oscillating NMR fields, all of which play an essential role. The paramagnet to helimagnet transition in the nuclear system is reflected in an unusual response: it absorbs at a frequency given by the internal RKKY exchange field, rather than the external static field, wh…
We study the exchange coupling mediated by itinerant carriers with spin-orbit interaction by both analytic and numeric approaches. The mediated exchange coupling is non-collinear and its spatial trends depend on the Fermi surface topology of the itinerant carriers. Taking Rashba interaction as an example, the exchange coupling is similar to the conventional Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida type in weak coupling. On the other hand, in the strong coupling, the spiral interaction dominates. In addition, inclusion of finite spin relaxation always makes the non-collinear spiral exchange interaction do…
We study the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction in 3D Dirac semimetals. Using retarded Green's functions in real space, we obtain and analyze asymptotic expressions for the interaction, with magnetic impurities at different distances and relative angle with respect to high symmetry directions on the lattice. We show that the Fermi velocity anisotropy in these materials produces a strong renormalization of the magnitude of the interaction, as well as a correction to the frequency of oscillation in real space. Hybridization of the impurities to different conduction electron orbitals are s…
We theoretically discuss the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). When each QD having a local spin is coupled to the conduction electrons in semiconductors, an indirect exchange interaction, i.e., the RKKY interaction, is induced between two local spins. The RKKY interaction between QDs, which is mediated by the Fermi sea in semiconductors, is modulated by changing the Fermi energy, and the magnitude or even the sign of the exchange interaction can be tuned, which leads to a tunable magnetic transition in QD devices. We estimate the magnitu…
We investigate theoretically the transport properties of two independent artificial Kondo impurities. They are coupled together via a tunable Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida (RKKY) interaction. For strong enough antiferromagnetic RKKY interaction, the impurity density of states increases with the applied in-plane magnetic field. This effect can be used to distinguish between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic RKKY interactions. These results may be relevant to explain some features of recent experiments by Craig et al. (cond-mat/0404213).
We consider the effective coupling between impurity spins on surfaces of a thin-film Weyl semimetal within Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida (RKKY) theory. If the spins are on the same surface, their coupling reflects the anisotropy and the spin-momentum locking of the Fermi arcs. By contrast when the spins are on opposite surfaces, their coupling is mediated by the Fermi arcs as well as by bulk states. In this case the coupling is both surprisingly strong and strongly thickness dependent, with a maximum at an optimum thickness. We demonstrate our results using analytical solutions of states in t…
We analytically evaluate charge and spin density response functions of the clean two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling at finite momenta and frequencies. On the basis of our exact expressions we discuss the accuracy of the long-wavelength and the quasiclassical approximations. We also derive the static limit of spin susceptibilities and demonstrate, in particular, how the Kohn-like anomalies in their derivatives are related to the spin-orbit modification of the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction. Taking into account screening and exchange effects of the Coulomb in…
Kitaev spin liquids (KSLs) contain both itinerant Majorana fermions and localized $Z_2$ flux excitations. The mobile fermions transport energy, while the fluxes hinder heat flow. By controlling the flux configuration, one can separate a KSL into different domains via $Z_2$ flux walls. We show that at low temperatures, the wall significantly suppresses the Majorana-mediated Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction and blocks the heat transfer between domains.
We study the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida effective exchange interaction between magnetic impurities embedded on the edges of transition-metal dichalcogenide flakes, using a three-orbital tight-binding model. Electronic states lying midgap of the bulk structure have strong one-dimensional (1D) character, localized on the edges of the crystallite. This results in exchange interactions with $1/r$ (or slower) decay with distance $r$, similar to other 1D systems. Most interestingly, however, the strong spin-orbit interaction in these materials results in sizable non-collinear Dzyaloshinskii-Moriy…
A discussion on the interaction between skyrmions in a bi-layer system connected by a non-magnetic metal is presented. From considering a free charge carrier model, we have shown that the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY ) inter- action can induce attractive or repulsive interaction between the skyrmions depending on the spacer thickness. We have also shown that due to an increasing in RKKY energy when the skyrmions are far from each other, their widths are diminished. Finally, we have obtained analytical solutions to the skyrmion position when the in-plane distance between the skyrmions is…
The Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between magnetic impurities, mediated by Dirac surface states on the surface of a topological insulator, leads to impurities ferromagnetic ordering. We present a self-consistent theory of the ordering, which takes into account a gap in the surface spectrum induced by the exchange field of magnetic impurities. We show that the gap does not change the general structure of RKKY interaction but considerable influences its strength. This feedback can be both positive and negative, depending on the ratio between the chemical potential and the gap,…
Anisotropic exchange couplings, such as the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), have played a vital role in the formation and dynamics of spin textures. This work predicts an anisotropic conduction electron spin density in metals with heavy magnetic impurities. The polarization of this $Dzyaloshinskii$-$Moriya$ $spin$ $density$ (DM-SD) is not collinear to the localized magnetic moments but rotated by the spin-dependent skew scattering of heavy atoms. The DM-SD induces the DMI between magnetic moments in metals and, therefore, it is the anisotropic extension of the Rutherman-Kittel-Kasuya-…
We theoretically study the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between magnetic impurities in both Dirac and Weyl semimetals (SMs). We find that the internode process, as well as the unique three-dimensional spin-momentum locking, has significant influences on the RKKY interaction, resulting in both a Heisenberg and an Ising term, and an additional Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya term if the inversion symmetry is absent. These interactions can lead to rich spin textures and possible ferromagnetism in Dirac and time-reversal symmetry-invariant Weyl SMs. The effect of anisotropic Dirac and Wey…
The magnetic structures and interedge magnetic couplings of Fe, Co and Ni transition-metal terminated graphene nanoribbons with zigzag (ZGNR) and armchair (AGNR) edges are studied by first-principles calculations. Fe-ZGNR is found to show antiferromagnetic (AF) coupling between two edges, while the interedge coupling of Co-ZGNR is ferromagnetic (FM). For Fe-AGNRs and Co-AGNRs, increasing the interedge distance we follow oscillatory transitions from FM to AF coupling with a period of about 3.7 Å. The damped oscillatory behavior indicates a Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida type interedge magnetic c…
We study the tuning mechanisms of the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) exchange interaction between two lateral quantum dots in the Kondo regime. At zero magnetic field we observe the expected splitting of the Kondo resonance and measure the RKKY interaction strength J as a function of the asymmetry between the two Kondo temperatures. At finite magnetic fields a chiral coupling between the quantum dots is observed in the Kondo chessboard and we probe the presence of the exchange interaction by analyzing the Kondo temperature with magnetic field.
The recent years have witnessed an emergence of the field of all-spin-based devices without any flow of charge. An ultimate goal of this scientific direction is the realization of full spectrum of spin-based networks like in modern electronics. The concepts of energy storing elements, indispensable for those networks, are so far lacking. Analyzing analytically the size dependent properties of magnetic chains that are coupled via either exchange or long-range dipolar or Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interactions, we discover a particularly simple law: magnetic configurations corresponding to he…
Nanoscale systems of metal atoms antiferromagnetically exchange coupled to several magnetic impurities are shown to exhibit an unconventional re-entrant competition between Kondo screening and indirect magnetic exchange interaction. Depending on the atomic positions of the magnetic moments, the total ground-state spin deviates from predictions of standard Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida perturbation theory. The effect shows up on an energy scale larger than the level width induced by the coupling to the environment and is experimentally verifiable by studying magnetic field dependencies.
We investigate the two-particle spin entanglement in magnetic nanoclusters described by the periodic Anderson model. An entanglement phase diagram is obtained, providing a novel perspective on a central property of magnetic nanoclusters, namely the temperature dependent competition between local Kondo screening and nonlocal Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida spin ordering. We find that multiparticle entangled states are present for finite magnetic field as well as in the mixed valence regime and away from half filling. Our results emphasize the role of charge fluctuations.
We investigate magnetic order in a lattice of classical spins coupled to an isotropic gas of one-dimensional (1d) conduction electrons via local exchange interactions. The frequently discussed Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) effective exchange model for this system predicts that spiral order is always preferred. Here we consider the problem nonperturbatively, and find that such order vanishes above a critical value of the exchange coupling that depends strongly on the lattice spacing. The critical coupling tends to zero as the lattice spacing becomes commensurate with the Fermi wave vecto…
We study the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction in p-doped transition metal dichalcogenides such as MoS$_2$ and WS$_2$. We consider magnetic impurities hybridized to the Mo d-orbitals characteristic of the valence bands. Using the Matsubara Green's function formalism, we obtain the two-impurity interaction vs their separation and chemical potential of the system, accounting for the important angular dependence which reflects the underlying triangular lattice symmetry. The inclusion of the valence band valley at the $Γ$ point results in a strong enhancement of the interaction. Ele…
We demonstrate that the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction in graphene can be strongly modified by a time-periodic driving field even in the weak drive regime. This effect is due to the opening of a dynamical band gap at the Dirac points when graphene is exposed to circularly polarized light. Using Keldysh-Floquet Green's functions, we develop a theoretical framework to calculate the time-averaged RKKY coupling under weak periodic drives and show that its magnitude in undoped graphene can be decreased controllably by increasing the driving strength, while mostly maintaining its f…
Of fundamental interest in the field of spintronics is the mechanism of indirect exchange coupling between magnetic impurities embedded in metallic hosts. A range of physical features, such as magnetotransport and overall magnetic moment formation, are predicated upon this magnetic coupling, often referred to as the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction. Recent theoretical studies on the RKKY in graphene have been motivated by possible spintronic applications of magnetically doped graphene systems. In this work a combination of analytic and numerical techniques are used to examine t…
We study the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction between two magnetic impurities connected to the edges of zigzag-terminated MoS$_{2}$ flakes. When the impurities lie on the edges of the flake, the effective exchange interaction exhibits sizable noncollinear Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya character that competes with a strong Ising coupling. We analyze the characteristic decay exponent for doping levels inside the band gap of the infinite layer, corresponding to edge states of the flake at the Fermi level. The characteristic exponents show sub-two-dimensional (sub-2D) behavior for these band fill…
We theoretically study the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction in two-dimensional black phosphorus, phosphorene. The RKKY interaction enhances significantly for the low levels of hole doping owing to the nearly valence flat band. Remarkably, for the hole-doped phosphorene, the highest RKKY interaction occurs when two impurities are located along the zigzag direction and it tends to a minimum value with changing the direction from the zigzag to the armchair direction. We show that the interaction is highly anisotropic and the magnetic ground-state of two magnetic adatoms can be tun…
We consider Mn-doped bulk zinc-blende semiconductors described by the 4 $ \times$ 4 Luttinger Hamiltonian. In these semiconductors, Mn atom acts as an acceptor providing the system a mobile hole, and also acts like a magnetic impurity of spin $S=5/2$. We obtain exact analytical expressions of the hole mediated Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida (RKKY) exchange interaction between two Mn${}^{2+}$ ions. The RKKY interaction of the Luttinger system consists of collinear Heisenberg-like and Ising-like interactions. The characteristic beating patterns appear in the range functions of the RKKY interacti…
We theoretically investigate the temperature-dependent static susceptibility and long-range magnetic coupling of three-dimensional (3D) chiral gapless electron-hole systems (semimetals) with arbitrary band dispersion [i.e., $\varepsilon(k) \sim k^N$, where $k$ is the wave vector and $N$ is a positive integer]. We study the magnetic properties of these systems in the presence of dilute random magnetic impurities. Assuming carrier-mediated Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida indirect exchange interaction, we find that the magnetic ordering of intrinsic 3D chiral semimetals in the presence of dilute ma…
The ease with which the physical properties of graphene can be tuned suggests a wide range of possible applications. Recently, strain engineering of these properties has been of particular interest. Possible spintronic applications of magnetically doped graphene systems have motivated recent theoretical investigations of the so-called Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between localized moments in graphene. In this work a combination of analytic and numerical techniques are used to examine the effects of uniaxial strain on such an interaction. A range of interesting features are …
We study Rudermann-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene nanoribbons in the presence of spin orbit interactions and magnetic fields. For this we evaluate the static spin susceptibility tensor in real space in various regimes at zero temperature. In metallic CNTs the RKKY interaction depends strongly on the sublattice and, at the Dirac point, is purely ferromagnetic (antiferromagnetic) for the localized spins on the same (different) sublattice, whereas in semiconducting CNTs the spin susceptibility depends only weakly on the sublattice and is dominantly…
We study the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction between magnetic impurities embedded in $p$-doped transition metal dichalcogenide triangular flakes. The role of underlying symmetries is exposed by analyzing the interaction as a function of impurity separation along zigzag and armchair trajectories, in specific parts of the sample. The large spin-orbit coupling in these materials produces strongly anisotropic interactions, including a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya component that can be sizable and tunable. We consider impurities hybridized to different orbitals of the host transition-metal and i…
We present a theoretical study of indirect exchange interaction between magnetic adatoms in graphene. The coupling between the adatoms to a graphene sheet is described in the framework of tunneling Hamiltonian. We account for the possibility of this coupling being of resonant character if a bound state of the adatom effectively interacts with the continuum of 2D delocalized states in graphene. In this case the indirect exchange between the adatoms mediated by the 2D carriers appears to be substantially enhanced compared to the results known from Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) theory. Mor…
We show that the paradigmatic Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) description of two local magnetic moments coupled to propagating electrons breaks down in helical Luttinger Liquids when the electron interaction is stronger than some critical value. In this novel regime, the Kondo effect overwhelms the RKKY interaction over all macroscopic inter-impurity distances. This phenomenon is a direct consequence of the helicity (realized, for instance, at edges of a time-reversal invariant topological insulator) and does not take place in usual (non-helical) Luttinger Liquids.
We theoretically investigate the features of Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) exchange interaction between two magnetic impurities, mediated by the interfacial bound states inside a domain wall (DW). The latter separates the two regions with oppositely signed inversion symmetry broken terms in graphene and Weyl semimetal. The DW is modelled by a smooth quantum well which hosts a number of discrete bound states including a pair of gapless, metallic zero-energy modes with opposite chiralities. We find clear signatures of these interfacial chiral bound states in spin response (RKKY exchange i…
We analyze the Ruderman-Kettel-Kasuya-Yosida(RKKY) interaction between magnetic impurities embedded in the helical metal on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators. Apart from the conventional RKKY terms, the spin-momentum locking of conduction electrons also leads to a significant Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction between impurity spins. For a chain of magnetic impurities, the DM term can result in single-handed spin helix on the surface. The handedness of spin helix is locked with the sign of Fermi velocity of the emergent Dirac fermions on the surface. We also show the …
