We investigate the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida oscillations of the itinerant carrier spin density in a system where those oscillations appear only due to a finite distribution of a localized spin. The system represents a half-infinite one-dimensional quantum wire with a magnetic impurity located at its edge. In contrast to the conventional model of a point-like exchange interaction the itinerant carrier spin density oscillations in this system exist. We {\it analytically} demonstrate that when the radius of the exchange interaction is less than the wave length of the itinerant carriers living on the Fermi surface, the long range behavior of the oscillations is identical to the one taking place in the zero radius limit of the same exchange interaction but for an infinite one-dimensional quantum wire where, in comparison with the original half-infinite system, the mass of the itinerant carriers is {\it strongly} modified by the exchange interaction radius. On the basis of our analysis we make a suggestion on directionality of surface Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction shown in recent experiments: we believe that in general the anisotropy of the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction could result not only from the anisotropy of the {\it Fermi surface} of itinerant carriers but also from the anisotropy of the {\it spin carrying atomic orbitals} of magnetic impurities.
The RKKY interaction between two impurities on a curved surface is investigated. Practical curved sample parameters are considered for investigating curvatures, similar to those observed experimentally in available samples such as graphene. For this type of two-dimensional curved systems and for two types of Schrödinger and Dirac carriers, the RKKY interaction and local density of states (LDOS) are calculated. Results show that the strength of the RKKY interaction on a curved surface depends significantly on the nature of particles embedded on this surface, indicating that the geometry has a d…
Exchange interactions with itinerant electrons are known to act as a relaxation mechanism for individual local spins. The same exchange interactions are also known to induce the so called RKKY indirect exchange interaction between two otherwise decoupled local spins. Here we show that both the spin relaxation and the RKKY coupling can be seen as the dissipative and reactive response to the coupling of the local spins with the itinerant electrons. We thereby predict that the spin relaxation rates of magnetic nanostructures of exchanged coupled local spins, such as as nanoengineered spin chains,…
We present a theory of both the itinerant carrier-mediated RKKY interaction and the virtual excitations-mediated Bloembergen-Rowland (BR) interaction between magnetic moments in graphene induced by proximity effect with a ferromagnetic film. We show that the RKKY/BR interaction consists of the Heisenberg, Ising, and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) terms. In the case of the nearest distance, we estimate the DM term from the RKKY/BR interaction is about 0.13 meV for the graphene/Co interface, which is consistent with the experimental result of DM interaction $0.16 \pm 0.05$ meV. Our calculations indi…
Kitaev spin liquids (KSLs) contain both itinerant Majorana fermions and localized $Z_2$ flux excitations. The mobile fermions transport energy, while the fluxes hinder heat flow. By controlling the flux configuration, one can separate a KSL into different domains via $Z_2$ flux walls. We show that at low temperatures, the wall significantly suppresses the Majorana-mediated Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction and blocks the heat transfer between domains.
We propose a physical mechanism to generate and selectively amplify anisotropic Rudermann-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interactions between two local spins. The idea is to combine the deflection of the carrier velocity by a P-N interface and the locking of this velocity to the carrier spin orientation via spin-orbit coupling. We provide analytical and numerical results to demonstrate this mechanism on the surface of a topological insulator P-N junction. This work identifies the P-N interface as a second knob which, together with the carrier density, enables independent control of the strength a…
The carrier-mediated RKKY interaction between local spins plays an important role for the application of magnetically doped graphene in spintronics and quantum computation. Previous studies largely concentrate on the influence of electronic states of uniform systems on the RKKY interaction. Here we reveal a very different way to manipulate the RKKY interaction by showing that the anomalous focusing - a well-known electron optics phenomenon in graphene P-N junctions - can be utilized to refocus the massless Dirac electrons emanating from one local spin to the other local spin. This gives rise t…
A discussion on the interaction between skyrmions in a bi-layer system connected by a non-magnetic metal is presented. From considering a free charge carrier model, we have shown that the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY ) inter- action can induce attractive or repulsive interaction between the skyrmions depending on the spacer thickness. We have also shown that due to an increasing in RKKY energy when the skyrmions are far from each other, their widths are diminished. Finally, we have obtained analytical solutions to the skyrmion position when the in-plane distance between the skyrmions is…
We propose an RKKY-type interaction that is mediated by a spin liquid. If a spin liquid ground state exists such an interaction could leave a fingerprint by ordering underlying localized moments such as nuclear spins. This interaction has a unique phenomenology that is distinct from the RKKY interaction found in fermionic systems; most notably the lack of a Fermi surface and absence of the requirement for itinerant electrons, since most spin liquids are insulators. As a working example we investigate the two-dimensional spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnet (KAFM), although the treatment remains gen…
Color centers in diamond are widely explored for applications in quantum sensing, computing, and networking. Their optical, spin, and charge properties have been extensively studied, while their interactions with itinerant carriers are relatively unexplored. Here we show that NV centers situated within 10 nm of the diamond surface can be converted to the neutral charge state via hole capture. By measuring the hole capture rate, we extract the capture cross section, which is suppressed by proximity to the diamond surface. The distance dependence is consistent with a carrier diffusion model, ind…
We investigate the effect of the mass anisotropy on Friedel Oscillations, Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction, screening properties, and Boltzmann transport in two dimensional (2D) metallic and doped semiconductor systems. We calculate the static polarizability and the dielectric function within the random phase approximation with the mass anisotropy fully taken into account without making any effective isotropic approximation in the theory. We find that carrier screening exhibits an isotropic behavior for small momenta despite the anisotropy of the system, and becomes strongly an…
We demonstrate that Kondo-Heisenberg systems, consisting of itinerant electrons and localized magnetic moments (Kondo impurities), can be used as a principally new platform to realize scalar chiral spin order. The underlying physics is governed by a competition of the Ruderman-Kittel-Kosuya-Yosida (RKKY) indirect exchange interaction between the local moments with the direct Heisenberg one. When the direct exchange is weak and RKKY dominates the isotropic system is in the disordered phase. A moderately large direct exchange leads to an Ising-type phase transition to the phase with chiral spin …

Resistivity minima are commonly seen in itinerant magnets and they are often attributed to the Kondo effect. However, recent experiments are revealing an increasing number of materials showing resistivity minima in the absence of indications of Kondo singlet formation. In a previous work [Z. Wang, K. Barros, G.-W. Chern, D. L. Maslov, and C. D. Batista, Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 206601 (2016)], we demonstrated that the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction can produce a classical spin liquid state at finite temperature, whose resistivity increases with decreasing temperature. The classi…

In this letter we develop the theory of Hall effect driven by non-collinear magnetic textures (topological Hall effect - THE) in diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS). We show that a carrier spin-orbit interaction induces a chiral magnetic ordering inside a bound magnetic polaron (BMP). The inner structure of non-collinear BMP is controlled by the type of spin-orbit coupling, allowing to create skyrmion- (Rashba) or antiskyrmion-like (Dresselhaus) configurations. The asymmetric scattering of itinerant carriers on polarons leads to the Hall signal which exists in weak external magnetic fields a…
We calculate the temperature dependent long-range magnetic coupling in the presence of dilute concentrations of random magnetic impurities in chiral multilayer two-dimensional semimetals, i.e., undoped intrinsic multilayer graphene. Assuming a carrier-mediated indirect RKKY exchange interaction among the well-separated magnetic impurities with the itinerant carriers mediating the magnetic interaction between the impurities, we investigate the magnetic properties of intrinsic multilayer graphene using an effective chiral Hamiltonian model. We find that due to the enhanced density of states in t…
We present a simultaneous investigation of coherent spin dynamics in both localized and itinerant carriers in Fe/GaAs heterostructures using ultrafast and spin-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy. We find that for excitation densities that push the transient Fermi energy of photocarriers above the mobility edge there exist two distinct precession frequencies in the ob-served spin dynamics, allowing us to simultaneously monitor both localized and itinerant states. For low magnetic fields (below 3 T) the beat frequency between these two excitations evolves linearly, indicating that the nuclear pola…
In this Letter we investigate the properties of a quantum impurity model in the presence of additional many-body interactions between mobile carriers. The fundamental question which is addressed here is how the interactions in the charge and spin sectors of an itinerant system affect the quantum impurity physics in the vicinity of the intermediate coupling fixed point. To illustrate the general answer to this question we discuss a two-channel charge Kondo circuit model. We show that the electron-electron interactions resulting in the formation of a massive spin mode in an itinerant electron su…

We study the electron dynamics in magnetic conductors with frustrated interactions dominated by isotropic exchange. We present a transport theory for itinerant carriers built upon the (single-band) doped Hubbard model and the slave-boson formalism, which incorporates the spin-exchange with the magnetically frustrated background into the representation of electron operators in a clear and controllable way. We also formulate hydrodynamic equations for the itinerant charge and spin degrees of freedom, whose currents contain new contributions that depend on the spatiotemporal variations of the ord…
