We present the first simultaneous global QCD analysis of spin-dependent parton distribution functions alongside their spin-averaged counterparts and pion, kaon, and unidentified hadron fragmentation functions. This analysis includes all data relevant for constraining the polarized light quark sea asymmetry $Δ\bar{u} - Δ\bar{d}$, in particular the latest polarized $W$-lepton production data from the STAR collaboration at RHIC and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering data from COMPASS, allowing the most robust extraction available with minimal theoretical assumptions. We also extract a self-consistent set of antiquark polarization ratios $Δ\bar{u}/\bar{u}$ and $Δ\bar{d}/\bar{d}$ and determine the signs of the truncated contributions to the proton spin from the light antiquarks.
One of the striking features of particle production at high beam energies is the near equal abundance of matter and antimatter in the central rapidity region. In this paper we study how this symmetry is reached as the beam energy is increased. In particular, we quantify explicitly the energy dependence of the approach to matter/antimatter symmetry in proton-proton and in heavy-ion collisions. Expectations are presented also for the production of more complex forms of antimatter like antihypernuclei.
The fundamental building blocks of the proton, quarks and gluons, have been known for decades. However, we still have an incomplete theoretical and experimental understanding of how these particles and their dynamics give rise to the quantum bound state of the proton and its physical properties, such as for example its spin. The two up and the single down quarks that comprise the proton in the simplest picture account only for a few percent of the proton mass, the bulk of which is in the form of quark kinetic and potential energy and gluon energy from the strong force. An essential feature of …
We consider accretion of matter onto a low mass black hole surrounded by ionized medium. We show that, because of higher mobility of protons than electrons, the black hole would acquire positive electric charge. If the black hole's mass is about or below $10^{20}$ g, the electric field at the horizon can reach the critical value which leads to vacuum instability and electron--positron pair production by the Schwinger mechanism. Since the positrons are ejected by the emergent electric field, while electrons are back--captured, the black hole operates as an antimatter factory which effectively c…
We discuss the possibility of finding polarized antiquark flavor asymmetry in Drell-Yan processes. We find that the difference between polarized proton-proton and proton-deuteron Drell-Yan cross sections should provide valuable information on the polarized flavor asymmetry. Numerical results indicate that the asymmetry effects are conspicuous especially in the large-x_F region. Our analysis is important for the transversity distributions because the flavor asymmetry cannot be found by inclusive lepton scattering and W-production processes.
We study inclusive heavy quarkonium production with definite polarizations in polarized proton-proton collisions using the non-relativistic QCD color-octet mechanism. We present results for rapidity distributions of cross sections and spin asymmetries for the production of J/psi and psi' with specific polarizations in polarized p-p collisions at \sqrt s = 200 GeV and 500 GeV at the RHIC within the PHENIX detector acceptance range.
We discuss the Drell-Yan proton-deuteron (p-d) asymmetry R_{pd}, which is defined by the proton-proton and proton-deuteron cross-section ratio Δ_{(T)}σ^{pd}/2Δ_{(T)}σ^{pp}, and its relation to the polarized light-antiquark flavor asymmetry. Using a formalism of the polarized {\it pd} Drell-Yan process, we show that the R_{pd} especially in the large-x_F region is very useful for finding the flavor asymmetry in the longitudinally-polarized and transversity distributions. Our results are particularly important to study the flavor asymmetry in the transversity distributions because they cannot be…
We discuss the relation between the ratio of the proton-deuteron (pd) Drell-Yan cross section to the proton-proton (pp) one Δ_{(T)} σ_{pd}/2 Δ_{(T)} σ_{pp} and the flavor asymmetry in polarized light-antiquark distributions. Using a recent formalism of the polarized pd Drell-Yan process, we show that the difference between the pp and pd cross sections is valuable for finding not only the flavor asymmetry in longitudinally polarized antiquark distributions but also the one in transversity distributions. It is especially important that we point out the possibility of measuring the flavor asymmet…
We study the azimuthal asymmetries in proton-proton Drell-Yan processes with one incident proton being transversely or longitudinally polarized. We consider particularly the asymmetries contributed by the leading-twist chiral-odd quark distributions. We analyze the asymmetries with $\sin(2ϕ+ϕ_S)$ and $\sin(2ϕ-ϕ_S)$ modulations in transverse single polarized $p^\uparrow p$ Drell-Yan and $\sin2ϕ$ asymmetries in longitudinal single polarized $p^\rightarrow p$ Drell-Yan at RHIC, J-PARC, E906 (Fermi Lab) and NICA (JINR). We show that the measurements of the asymmetries in those facilities can provi…
We study inclusive $χ_{cJ}$ production with definite polarizations in polarized proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV and 500 GeV at RHIC by using non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) color-octet mechanism. We present results of rapidity distribution of $χ_{c0}$, $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ production with specific polarizations in polarized p-p collisions at RHIC within the PHENIX detector acceptance range. We also present the corresponding results for the spin asymmetries.
In recent years, space-born experiments have delivered new measurements of high energy cosmic-ray (CR) $\bar p$ and $e^+$. In addition, unprecedented sensitivity to CR composite anti-nuclei anti-d and anti-He is expected to be achieved in the near future. We report on the theoretical interpretation of these measurements. While CR antimatter is a promising discovery tool for new physics or exotic astrophysical phenomena, an irreducible background arises from secondary production by primary CR collisions with interstellar matter. Understanding this irreducible background or constraining it from …
Polarized proton-deuteron (pd) Drell-Yan processes are investigated for studying new spin structure of a spin-1 hadron. Our formalism indicates that there exist many structure functions: 108 in general and 22 in the \vec Q_T-integrated case. A naive parton model suggests that at least one of them should be related to the tensor polarized distributions, which have not been measured at all. There are some experimental possibilities at FNAL, HERA, and RHIC to study the polarized pd reactions.
Nucleon resonance contributions to the polarized proton $g_1$ and $g_2$ structure functions are computed from resonance electroexcitation amplitudes extracted from CLAS exclusive meson electroproduction data. Including resonances in the mass range up to 1.75 GeV, and taking into account the interference between excited states, we compare the resonant contributions with the polarized proton structure function and polarization asymmetry data from Jefferson Lab 6 GeV measurements. All resonance-like structure observed in the polarized structure functions and asymmetries can be attributed to the r…
Anti-proton and positron Galactic cosmic ray spectra are among the key targets for indirect detection of dark matter. The boost factors, corresponding to an enhancement of the signal and linked to the clumpiness properties of the dark matter distribution, have been taken as high as thousands in the past. The dramatic impact of these boost factors for indirect detection of antiparticles, for instance with the PAMELA satellite or the coming AMS-02 experiment, asks for their detailed calculation. We take into account the results of high resolution N-body dark matter simulations to calculate the m…
We compute the contribution from the longitudinally polarized proton to the twist-3 double-spin asymmetry $A_{LT}$ in inclusive (light) hadron production from proton-proton collisions,i.e., $p^\uparrow \vec{p}\to h\,X$. We show that using the relevant QCD equation-of-motion relation and Lorentz invariance relation allows one to eliminate the twist-3 quark-gluon correlator (associated with the longitudinally polarized proton) in favor of one-variable twist-3 quark distributions and the (twist-2) transversity parton density. Including this result with the twist-3 pieces associated with the trans…
We calculate the inclusive production of a polarized $Λ$ or $\barΛ$ hyperon from the single longitudinally polarized proton and proton ($pp$) collision at RHIC. By comparing the data reported by the STAR Collaboration, we find that this process is sensitive to the polarization of strange and antistrange quarks of the proton in the experimental range. By introducing asymmetric coefficients with the minimization of $χ^2$, we further identify the asymmetry of the polarized strange-antistrange quarks in the proton sea and find that the first moment is $Δs \approx -0.025\pm 0.019$ for strange quark…
We describe a light-pulse atom interferometer that is suitable for any species of atom and even for electrons and protons as well as their antiparticles, in particular for testing the Einstein equivalence principle with antihydrogen. The design obviates the need for resonant lasers through far-off resonant Bragg beam splitters and makes efficient use of scarce atoms by magnetic confinement and atom recycling. We expect to reach an initial accuracy of better than 1% for the acceleration of free fall of antihydrogen, which can be improved to the part-per million level.
We reexamine the low-energy expansion of polarized Compton scattering off the proton and show that the leading non-Born contribution to the beam asymmetry of low-energy Compton scattering is given by the magnetic polarizability alone, the electric polarizability cancels out. Based on this fact we propose to determine the magnetic dipole polarizability of the proton from the beam asymmetry. We also present the low-energy expansion of doubly-polarized observables, from which the spin polarizabilities can be extracted.
We investigate the QED Compton process (QEDCS) in longitudinally polarized lepton-proton scattering both in the elastic and inelastic channels and show that the cross section can be expressed in terms of the polarized equivalent photon distribution of the proton. We provide the necessary kinematical constraints to extract the polarized photon content of the proton using this process at HERMES, COMPASS and eRHIC. We also discuss the suppression of the major background process coming from virtual Compton scattering. We point out that such an experiment can give valuable information on $g_1(x_B, …
We show that the polarized proton-antiproton Drell-Yan process is ideal to probe the pretzelosity distribution ($h_{1T}^\perp$), which is one of the new transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions of the nucleon. We present predictions of the $\cos(2ϕ+ ϕ_a - ϕ_b)$ asymmetry in the transversely polarized proton-antiproton Drell-Yan process at PAX kinematics and find that the results are significantly larger compared with those of the $\sin(3ϕ_h - ϕ_S)$ asymmetry in the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering process at HERMES, COMPASS, and JLab kinematics. We conclude that the $\cos(2ϕ+…
We show that, to a very good approximation, the ratio of the spin-flip to the non-flip parts of the elastic proton-nucleus amplitude is the same as for proton-nucleon scattering at very high energy. The result is used to do a realistic calculation of the analyzing power A_N for pC scattering in the Coulomb-nuclear interference (CNI) region of momentum transfer.
Phenomenological parameterizations of proton and neutron polarized structure functions, g1p and g1n, are developed for x > 0.02 using deep inelastic data up to ~ 50 (GeV/c)**2 as well as available experimental results on photo- and electro-production of nucleon resonances. The generalized Drell-Hearn-Gerasimov sum rules are predicted from low to high values of Q**2 and compared with proton and neutron data. Furthermore, the main results of the power correction analysis carried out on the Q**2-behavior of the polarized proton Nachtmann moments, evaluated using our parameterization of g1p, are b…
We present predictions of the unweighted and weighted double spin asymmetries related to the transversal helicity distribution $g_{1T}$ and the longitudinal transversity distribution $h_{1L}^\perp$, two of eight leading-twist transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) or three-dimensional parton distribution functions (3dPDFs), in the polarized proton-antiproton Drell-Yan process at typical kinematics on the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR). We conclude that FAIR is ideal to access the new 3dPDFs towards a detailed picture of the nucleon structure.
We propose a unified new approach to describe polarized and unpolarized quark distributions in the proton based on the gauge-gravity correspondence, light-front holography, and the generalized Veneziano model. We find that the spin-dependent quark distributions are uniquely determined in terms of the unpolarized distributions by chirality separation without the introduction of additional free parameters. The predictions are consistent with existing experimental data and agree with perturbative QCD constraints at large longitudinal momentum $x$. In particular, we predict the sign reversal of th…
We discuss QED radiative corrections at first and second order for the parity violating asymmetry $A_\text{PV}$ in elastic electron proton scattering. A measurement of $A_\text{PV}$ is planned at low energies and with high precision by the forthcoming P2 experiment at the new MESA facility in Mainz. Bremsstrahlung leads to a shift of the momentum transfer $Q^2$ which affects the determination of the weak charge of the proton.
An algebraic Ansatz for the proton's Poincaré-covariant wave function, which includes both scalar and pseudovector diquark correlations, is used to calculate proton valence, sea, and glue distribution functions (DFs). Regarding contemporary data, a material pseudovector diquark component in the proton is necessary for an explanation of the neutron-proton structure function ratio; and a modest Pauli blocking effect in the gluon splitting function is sufficient to explain the proton's light-quark antimatter asymmetry. In comparison with pion DFs, the light-front momentum fractions carried by all…
We compute cross sections of $Θ^+$ production near threshold for a polarized proton reaction, $\vec p \vec p \to Σ^+ Θ^+$ which was recently proposed to determine unambiguously the parity of $Θ^+$. Within theoretical uncertainties cross sections for the allowed spin configuration are estimated; it is of order of one microbarn for the positive parity $Θ^+$ and about 1/10 microbarn for the negative parity $Θ^+$ in the threshold energy region where the s-wave component dominates.
Single spin asymmetries in polarized proton(antiproton) + proton -> pion + X have been measured to be large. They can be understood within perturbative QCD by introducing new k_perp and spin dependences in fragmentation and/or distribution functions. We discuss first how these effects in distribution functions alone can account for existing data and predict single spin asymmetries in other processes; then we see how similar effects in fragmentation functions alone can fit the existing data; finally we devise strategies to discriminate between the two contributions
We perform a study of $W$-boson production in polarized proton-proton collisions through next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD. This calculation is required to extend the extraction of polarized parton distribution functions to NNLO accuracy. We present differential distributions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV, relevant for comparison to measurements from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The NNLO QCD corrections significantly reduce the scale dependence of the cross section. We compare the longitudinal single-spin asymmetries as a function of lepton pseudorapidity to RHIC …
The Sivers Function is briefly reviewed and the Collins Fragmentation Function to produce a hadron from a polarized quark is defined. We estimate $π^{+},π^{-}$ +X production, where X represents particles which are not detected, via proton collisions with a polarized proton target using the Collins Fragmentation Function derived using the gluon distribution functions for polarized p-p collisions at E=$\sqrt{s}$=200 GeV.
The SPD experiment at the future NICA collider at JINR (Dubna, Russia) aims to investigate the nucleon spin structure and polarization phenomena in collisions of longitudinally and transversely polarized protons and deuterons at $\sqrt{s}$ up to 27 GeV and luminosity up to 10$^{32}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. Measurement of asymmetries in the Drell-Yan pairs, charmonium and prompt photon production can provide an access to the full set of leading twist TMD PDFs in nucleons. The experimental setup is planned as a universal 4$π$ detector for a wide range of physics tasks.
We evaluate the single target-spin sin(phi_h) and sin(2ϕ_h) azimuthal asymmetries in the semi-inclusive deep inelastic lepton scattering off longitudinally polarized proton target under HERMES kinematic conditions. A good agreement with the HERMES data can be achieved using only the twist-2 distribution and fragmentation functions.
To probe the behavior of polarized gluons in the proton, we propose the charmed hadron, such as Lambda_c and D^*, production in the forthcoming RHIC experiments. We found that the spin correlation between the target proton and the produced Lambda_c baryon might be a good signal for testing models of the polarized gluon distribution in the proton.
We discuss Lambda polarization in semi-inclusive proton-proton collisions, with one of the protons longitudinally polarized. The hyperfine interaction responsible for the $Δ$-$N$ and $Σ$-$Λ$ mass splittings gives rise to flavor asymmetric fragmentation functions and to sizable polarized non-strange fragmentation functions. We predict large positive Lambda polarization in polarized proton-proton collisions at large rapidities of the produced Lambda, while other models, based on SU(3) flavor symmetric fragmentation functions, predict zero or negative Lambda polarization. The effect of $Σ^0$ and …
We propose to perform measurements of asymmetries of the Drell-Yan (DY) pairs production in collisions of non-polarized, longitudinally and transversally polarized protons and deuterons which provide an access to all leading twist collinear and TMD PDFs of quarks and anti-quarks in nucleons. The measurements of asymmetries in production of J/Ψand direct photons will be performed as well simultaneously with DY using dedicated triggers. The set of these measurements will supply complete information for tests of the quark-parton model of nucleons at the QCD twist-two level with minimal systematic…
In this review a first comprehensive study of azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic muoproduction of hadron pairs off longitudinally polarized protons at COMPASS is presented. The study is based on data taken in 2007 and 2011, obtained by impinging a high-energetic $μ^+$ beam of $160$ GeV/$\it{c}$, respectively $200$ GeV/$\it{c}$, momentum on a solid ammonia target. The discussion is focused on both leading and subleading longitudinal target-spin-dependent asymmetries arising in the di-hadron SIDIS cross section, addressing the role of spin-orbit couplings and quark-gluon corr…
We obtain the gluon parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the proton within the extended light-front holographic QCD framework, where the proton couples with the spin-two Pomeron in Anti-de Sitter space, together with constraints imposed by the Veneziano model. The gluon helicity asymmetry, after satisfying the perturbative QCD constraints at small and large longitudinal momentum regions, agrees with existing experimental measurements. The polarized gluon distribution is consistent with global analyses. We predict the gluon helicity contribution to the proton spin, $ΔG=0.221^{+0.056}_{-0.044…
We consider several single spin asymmetries in inclusive, transversely polarized proton(antiproton) - proton processes as higher twist QCD contributions, taking into account spin and intrinsic transverse momentum effects in the quark distribution functions. This approach has been previously applied to the description of the single spin asymmetries observed in transversely polarized proton - proton -> pion + X reactions and all its parameters fixed: we give here predictions for new processes, which agree with experiments for which data are available, and suggest further possible measurements.
The effects of parity violation in the interaction of relativistic polarized protons and deuterons are discussed. Within Glauber's approach, estimates are obtained for P-odd asymmetries in the total and elastic scattering cross sections, in the deuteron dissociation cross section, and in the inelastic cross section with meson production in a final state. It is shown that, from the point of view of the magnitude of the P-odd effects, the interaction of polarized deuterons with unpolarized protons has an advantage over the interaction of polarized protons with unpolarized deuterons. A significan…
The longitudinally polarized Drell-Yan process is one of most powerful tools to probe the structure of hadrons. By means of the recent formalism of the polarized proton-deuteron(pd) Drell-Yan, we calculate the ratio of the proton-deuteron Drell-Yan cross section to the proton-proton(pp) one $Δσ_{pd}/2Δσ_{pp}$in the polarized case. The theoretical results can be compared with future experimental data to confirm the nuclear effect due to the six-quark cluster in deuteron .
Polarized electron-deuteron deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) with detection of the spectator proton ("tagged DIS") enables measurements of neutron spin structure with maximal control of nuclear effects. We calculate the longitudinal spin asymmetries in polarized tagged DIS using methods of light-front nuclear structure and study their dependence on the measured proton momentum. Asymmetries can be formed with all three deuteron spin states ($\pm 1, 0$) or the two maximum-spin states only ($\pm 1$, involving tensor polarization). The proton momentum dependence can be used to select pure S-wave co…
We summarise the present status of the proton spin problem and the physics possibilities for future polarized ep and pp colliders. This summary is based on the presentations and discussion sessions at the workshop ``The Spin Structure of the Proton and Polarized Collider Physics'' (Trento, July 23-28, 2001).
The recent global analysis of helicity parton distributions, which takes into account available data from inclusive and semi-inclusive polarized deep inelastic scattering, as well as from polarized proton-proton scattering at RHIC, appears to offer the first strong evidence that polarized sea-quark distributions are flavor asymmetric, i.e. $Δ\bar{u}(x) \ne Δ\bar{d}(x)$. We point out that the flavor symmetry breaking pattern indicated by their analysis, i.e. $Δ\bar{u}(x) > 0$ and $Δ\bar{d}(x) < 0$ with the magnitude correlation $|Δ\bar{u}(x)| < |Δ\bar{d}(x)|$, is just consistent with our theore…
We consider the possibility of a direct determination of the polarized gluon density in the proton using charm production with polarized beams at HERA. We study total cross sections and distributions at leading order using different parametrizations of the polarized gluon density. We conclude that charm photoproduction data can be used to constrain the polarized gluon density in the proton if an integrated luminosity of 100~pb$^{-1}$ will be achieved at HERA.
Based on the hard-scattering factorization which decomposes the diffractive structure function into a pomeron flux and a pomeron structure function, we study the single diffractive Lambda_c^+ production in polarized pp scattering: p + p -> p + Lambda_c^+ + X, which will be observed at forthcoming RHIC experiment. By analyzing the cross section and correlation of the spin polarization between the initial proton and produced Lambda_c^+, we found that the process is quite effective for testing both hard-scattering factorization and models of the polarized gluon distribution in the proton.
We report on a calculation of one-loop weak corrections to polarized quark-gluon scattering and the corresponding crossed channels. Such contributions are suppressed formally by one power of alpha_s relative to W- or Z-mediated quark-quark scattering, but would enable the spin asymmetry of the gluon distribution to contribute to parity-violating asymmetries that will soon be investigated in polarized proton-proton scattering experiments at RHIC. In certain kinematic regions, gluon contributions to parity-violating asymmetries can be as large as 10% of the tree-level W- and Z-exchanges in quark…
We have measured the spin-dependent structure function $g_1^p$ in inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of polarized muons off polarized protons, in the kinematic range $0.003 < x < 0.7$ and $1 GeV^2 < Q^2 < 60 GeV^2$. A next-to-leading order QCD analysis is used to evolve the measured $g_1^p(x,Q^2)$ to a fixed $Q^2_0$. The first moment of $g_1^p$ at $Q^2_0 = 10 GeV^2$ is $Γ^p = 0.136\pm 0.013(stat.) \pm 0.009(syst.)\pm 0.005(evol.)$. This result is below the prediction of the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule by more than two standard deviations. The singlet axial charge $a_0$ is found to be $0.28 \pm 0.16$…
The capabilities of RHIC with polarized protons to test the Lorentz structure of electroweak interactions and also the properties of MSSM Higgs, should it be discovered, are discussed.
The analysis\cite{ohkuma:1} of helicity transfer to $Λ_{c}^{+}$ in polarized proton collisions is extended to the proton helicity correlations with the $Λ_{c}^{+}$ transverse polarization in the production plane (parameter $D_{LS}$). The available spin transfer observables for the collisions of {\em two} longitudinally polarized protons are evaluated. It is shown that, in the central region at $Λ_{c}^{+}$ transverse momenta of a few GeV/c, $D_{LS}$ parameters are of about the same size as the helicity-to-helicity correlations. The methodical issue of using spin transfers for cross-checks of sy…
A new version of Monte Carlo generator ELRADGEN for simulation of real photon emission in elastic electron-proton scattering is presented. The extensions in the new version include opportunity to deal with polarized particles: longitudinally polarized electron and arbitrary polarized proton. Simulation strategy, specifications of used kinematics, structure of the contributions to the observed cross section, cross-checks, and numerical results for BLAST experimental setup are presented and briefly discussed.
The associated production of squarks and charginos in high energy collisions of the polarized real photons and protons is discussed. We give the cross sections for different initial beam polarizations and the polarization asymmetries which can be used to anticipate the masses of squarks and charginos.
A new handed interaction between quarks could be at the origin of some small parity violating effects in the inclusive production of one-jet in polarized $pp$ collisions. This interaction could originate from compositeness or from the presence of a new massive vector boson. The measurement of such asymmetries could be performed within a few years by using the RHIC collider as a polarized proton-proton collider.
Estimates for longitudinal spin asymmetries which single out new polarized nucleon structure functions in deeply inelastic charged current interactions at HERA energies are given, exploiting their interpretation in terms of polarized quark distributions. These asymmetries turn out to be large and allow a measurement of the new polarized structure functions $g_1^{W}$ and $g_5^{W}$, which would add valuable tests and information on the spin content of quarks inside a polarized proton. We also show that single spin asymmetries in neutral current interactions are very small.
Once heavy-quark corrections are take into account neutrino-proton elastic scattering provides a complementary probe of polarized strangeness in the nucleon to measurements from inclusive and semi-inclusive polarized deep inelastic scattering. We review the different types of experiment and a recent NLO calculation of heavy-quark contributions to the weak neutral-current axial-charge (measureable in neutrino-proton elastic scattering) performed using Witten's heavy-quark renormalization group method.
