The physical characteristics of the novel chalcogenide MAX phase Hf2SeC have been investigated using the DFT method. The obtained lattice constant and elastic constants (Cij) are compared with previous results to check the consistency of our setting parameters during calculations Moreover, the elastic properties such as elastic constants, moduli, anisotropy, and hardness are also compared with preexisting MAX phases of its kind. The checking of mechanical stability has been done based on Cij in accordance with the previously stated stability criteria. The reason for the higher hardness of Hf2SeC compared to Hf2SC is explained using the density of states (DOS). The brittleness character of Hf2SeC has been revealed using the Pugh ratio, Poisson ratio, and Cauchy pressure. The electronic properties (band structure and charge density mapping) of Hf2SeC are studied to disclose the metallic nature as well as bonding nature within the titled chalcogenide. The anisotropy in both electronic conductivity and mechanical properties is investigated. The temperature and pressure dependence of volume, Grüneisen parameter, Debye temperature, thermal expansion coefficient (TEC), and specific heat at constant volume (Cv) are explored. In addition, minimum thermal conductivity (Kmin) and melting point (Tm) are studied to explore its suitability for high-temperature applications.
Various ternary chalcogenide systems and their properties are one of the hot topics for researchers nowadays. In this article, one of the ternary chalcogenide compounds, CdTl2Te4 is studied including its electronic structures and optical properties via first principles calculations using SIESTA code. The structure of the compound has a tetragonal crystal system and the unit cell is periodic in all directions. The band structure showed it is a direct band gap semiconductor which is explained by the density of states. The energy gap obtained is seen to increase on employing external electric fie…
Two-dimensional (2D) binary transition-metal chalcogenides (TMCs) like molybdenum disulfide exhibits excellent properties as materials for light adsorption devices. Alloying binary TMCs can form 2D compositionally complex TMC alloys (CCTMCAs) that possess remarkable properties from the constituent TMCs. We adopt a high-throughput workflow performing density functional theory (DFT) calculations based on the virtual crystal approximation (VCA) model (VCA-DFT). We test the workflow by predicting properties including in-plane lattice constants, band gaps, effective masses, spin-orbit coupling (SOC…
Intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity ($κ_l$) is a desired requirement in many crystalline solids such as thermal barrier coatings and thermoelectrics. Here, we design an advanced machine-learning (ML) model based on crystal graph convolutional neural network that is insensitive to volumes (i.e., scale) of the input crystal structures to discover novel quaternary chalcogenides, AMM'Q$_3$ (A/M/M'=alkali, alkaline-earth, post-transition metals, lanthanides, Q=chalcogens). Upon screening the thermodynamic stability of $\sim$ 1 million compounds using the ML model iteratively and performi…
We present a comprehensive computational study on the properties of face-centered cubic and hexagonal chalcogenide Ge2Sb2Te5. We calculate the electronic structure using density functional theory (DFT); the obtained density of states (DOS) compares favorably with experiments, also looking suitable for transport analysis. Optical constants including refraction index and absorption coefficient capture major experimental features, aside from an energy shift owed to an underestimate of the band gap that is typical of DFT calculations. We also compute the phonon DOS for the hexagonal phase, obtaini…
In the density-functional studies of materials with localized electronic states, the local/semilocal exchange-correlation functionals are often either combined with a Hubbard parameter $U$ as in the LDA+$U$ method or mixed with a fraction of exactly computed (Fock) exchange energy yielding a hybrid functional. Although some inaccuracies of the semilocal density approximations are thus fixed to a certain extent, the improvements are not sufficient to make the predictions agree with the experimental data. Here we put forward the perspective that the hybrid functional scheme and the LDA+$U$ metho…
Stable structures of layered SnS and SnSe and their associated electronic and vibrational spectra are predicted using first-principles DFT calculations. The calculations show that both materials undergo a phase transformation upon thinning whereby the in-plane lattice parameters converge to a pseudo-cubic phase, similar to the high-temperature behaviour observed for their bulk counterparts. The electronic properties of layered SnS and SnSe evolve to an almost symmetric dispersion whilst the gap changes from indirect to direct. Characteristic signatures in the phonon dispersion curves and surfa…
Chalcogenide perovskites have emerged as non-toxic and stable photovoltaic materials, acting as an alternative to lead halide hybrid perovskites having similar optoelectronic properties. In the present work, we report the electronic and optical properties of chalcogenide perovskites AZrS$_3$ (A=Ca, Sr, Ba) by using the density functional theory (DFT) and many-body perturbation theory (MBPT viz. G$_0$W$_0$ and BSE). This study includes excitonic analysis for the aforementioned systems. The exciton binding energy (E$_\textrm{B}$) is found to be larger than that of the halide perovskites, as the …
Based on density functional theory (DFT), we investigate the electronic properties of bulk and single-layer ZrTe$_4$Se. The band structure of bulk ZrTe$_4$Se can produce a semimetal-to-topological insulator (TI) phase transition under uniaxial strain. The maximum global band gap is 0.189 eV at the 7\% tensile strain. Meanwhile, the Z$_2$ invariants (0; 110) demonstrate conclusively it is a weak topological insulator (WTI). The two Dirac cones for the (001) surface further confirm the nontrivial topological nature. The single-layer ZrTe$_4$Se is a quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator with a band g…
By first-principles calculation based on the density functional theory (DFT) with the modified Becke-Johnson local density approximation plus Hubbard U (MBJLDA+U), we studied the band structures of the Yb chalcogenides YbO and YbS under ambient and high pressures. It was revealed that both YbO and YbS have a trivial band topology under ambient pressure, and a nontrivial band topology under high pressure. The topological phase transition is reduced by the pressure-driven single-band inversion between 5d- and 4f -orbitals at the time-reversal invariant momentum (TRIM) point X. A bulk Dirac cone …
Thermal expansion of MAX phases along different directions tended to be different because of the anisotropy of hexagonal crystals. Herein, a new Hf2SeC phase was synthesized and confirmed to be relatively isotropic, whose coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs) were determined to be 9.73 μK-1 and 10.18 μK-1 along a and c directions. The strong M-S bond endowed Hf2SC and Zr2SC lower CTEs than Hf2SeC and Zr2SeC. A good relationship between the thermal expansion anisotropy and the ratio of elastic stiffness constant c11 and c33 was established. This straightforward approximation could be used to…
Cu-based chalcogenides are promising materials for thin-film solar cells with more than 20% measured cell efficiency. Using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory, the optoelectronic properties of a group of Cu-based chalcogenides Cu$_2$-II-IV-VI$_4$ is studied. They are then screened with the aim of identifying potential absorber materials for photovoltaic applications. The spectroscopic limited maximum efficiency (SLME) introduced by Yu and Zunger is used as a metric for the screening. After constructing the current-voltage curve, the maximum spectroscopy dependent …
We perform systematic density functional theory (DFT) calculations to assess the performance of various exchange-correlation potentials $V_{xc}$ in describing the chalcogenide GaM$_4$Q$_8$ lacunar spinels (M=Mo, V, Nb, Ta; Q=S, Se). We examine the dependency of crystal structure (in cubic and rhombohedral symmetries), electronic structure, magnetism, optical conductivity, and lattice dynamics in lacunar spinels at four different levels of $V_{xc}$: the local density approximation (LDA), generalized gradient approximation (GGA), meta-GGA, and hybrid with fractional Fock exchange. We find that L…
By means of a comprehensive theoretical investigation, we show that external pressure can induce topological phase transitions in IV-VI semiconducting chalcogenides with rock-salt structure. These materials satisfy mirror symmetries that are needed to sustain topologically protected surface states, at variance with time-reversal symmetry responsible for gapless edge states in $\mathcal{Z}_{2}$ topological insulators. The band inversions at high-symmetry points in the Brillouin zone that are related by mirror symmetry, are brought about by an "asymmetric" hybridization between cation and anion …
Perovskite chalcogenides are gaining substantial interest as an emerging class of semiconductors for optoelectronic applications. High quality samples are of vital importance to examine their inherent physical properties. We report the successful crystal growth of the model system, BaZrS$_3$ and its Ruddlesden-Popper phase Ba$_3$Zr$_2$S$_7$ by flux method. The Zr-based MAX phases have attracted considerable attention for their outstanding irradiation behavior and high neutron transparency relevant to nuclear power generation technologies. In spite of increased understanding of physical behavior crystalline MAX phases, the high-temperature oxidation behavior and reaction mechanism of disordered MAX phases both from theory and experiments are not well understood due to increased system complexity. Here, we present a detailed comparative assessment of high-temperature thermodynamic-stability and oxidation behavior (reaction-products and chemical ac…
Using a synergistic combination of experimental and computational methods, we shed light on the unusual solubility of (Cr,Ti)3AlC2 MAX phase, showing that it may accommodate Cr only at very low concentrations (<2at%) or at the exact Cr/(Cr+Ti) ratio of 2/3, even when the ratio of reactants is far from this stoichiometry (1/2 < Cr/(Cr+Ti) < 5/6). In both phases Cr exclusively occupies the 4f sites, bridging carbide layers with the Al layer. Despite this, the peculiar stability of (Cr2/3Ti1/3)3AlC2 is attributed to the formation of strong, spin-polarised Cr-C bonds, which result in volume reduct…
We report ab-initio calculations of the stability, lattice dynamics, electronic and thermoelectric properties of cubic La3-yX4 (X=S,Se,Te) materials in view of analyzing their potential for thermoelectric applications. The lanthanum motions are strongly coupled to the tellurium motions in the telluride, whereas the motions of both types of atoms are decoupled in the sulfides. Nevertheless, this has no impact on their thermal properties because experimentally all compounds have low thermal conductivity. We believe that this is due to Umklapp scattering of the acoustical modes, notably by the lo…

The estimated structural lattice parameters were consistent with the prior report. The mechanical and dynamical stability of these compounds have been established theoretically. The materials are brittle in nature and elastically anisotropic. The v…
We study pressure-induced structural evolution of vanadium diselenide (VSe2), a 1T polymorphic member of the transition metal di-chalcogenide (TMD) family using synchrotron-based powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and first-principles density functional theory (DFT). Our XRD results reveal anomalies at P ~4 GPa in c/a ratio, V-Se bond length and Se-V-Se bond angle signalling an isostructural transition. This is followed by a first order structural transition from 1T (space group P-3m1) phase to a 3R (space group R-3m) phase at P ~11 GPa due to sliding of adjacent Se-V-Se layers. We present variou…

The obtained lattice parameters are in agreement with the previous theoretical research and available experimental data. The elastic properties of the MAX phases under study have been calculated. The values of elastic anisotropy, Young's modulus, Poisson ratio and shear modulus reveal that the compounds are stable and…
We have calculated electronic and optical properties of Si/BeSe$_{0.41}$Te$_{0.59}$ heterostructures by a semiempirical $sp^{3}s^{*}$ tight-binding method. Tight-binding parameters and band bowing of BeSe$_{0.41}$Te$_{0.59}$ are considered through a recent model for highly mismatched semiconductor alloys. The band bowing and the measurements of conduction band offset lead to a type II heterostucture for Si/BeSe$_{0.41}$Te$_{0.59}$ with conduction band minimum in the Si layer and valence band maximum in the BeSe$_{0.41}$Te$_{0.59}$ layer. The electronic structure and optical properties of vario…
A DFT study of the synthesized MAX phase Zr2SeC has been carried out for the first time to explore its physical properties for possible applications in many sectors. The studied properties are compared with prior known MAX phase Zr2SC. The structural parameters (lattice constants, volume, and atomic positions) are observed to be consistent with earlier results. The band structure and density of states (DOS) are used to explore the metallic conductivity, anisotropic electrical conductivity, and the dominant role of Zr-d states to the electrical conductivity. Analysis of the peaks in the DOS and…
We have used density functional theory to study the recently predicted MAX phase borides Hf2AB (A = Pb, Bi) in where the mechanical, electronic, thermal, and optical properties have been investigated for the first time. A good agreement of the obtained lattice constants with the reported values confirmed the well accuracy of the present calculations. The stiffness constants (Cij) attest to the mechanical stability of all title compounds. The mechanical behaviors have been scrutinized discreetly by considering the bulk modulus, shear modulus, Youngs modulus, as well as hardness parameters. The …

In this article, first-principles calculations have been carried out to explore the mechanical properties, Vickers hardness, elastic anisotropy, thermal properties, and optical properties of predicted thermodynamically stable MAX compounds Hf2AB2 (A = In, Sn). The structural properties are compared with the available data to assess the validity of calculations. The mechanical stability of Hf2AB2 (A = In, Sn) compounds is established with the help of the computed stiffness constants (Cij)…
Chalcopyrite semiconductors are of considerable interest for application as absorber layers in thin-film photovoltaic cells. When growing films of these compounds, however, they are often found to contain CuAu- like domains, a metastable phase of chalcopyrite. It has been reported that for CuInS2, the presence of the CuAu-like phase improves the short circuit current of the chalcopyrite-based photovoltaic cell. We investigate the thermodynamic stability of both phases for a selected list of I-III-VI2 materials using a first-principles density functional theory approach. For the CuIn-VI2 compou…
The stability against quench is one of the main issue to be pursued in a superconducting material which should be able to perform at very high levels of current densities. Here we focus on the connection between the critical current $I_c$ and the quenching current $I^*$ associated to the so-called flux-flow instability phenomenon, which sets in as an abrupt transition from the flux flow state to the normal state. To this purpose, we analyze several current-voltage characteristics of three types of iron-based thin films, acquired at different temperature and applied magnetic field values. For t…
An interesting class of ternary metallic borides, known as the 212 MAX phase borides, is the recent advancement of the MAX phase family. The stability was confirmed by calculating the formation energy, phonon dispersion curve, and elastic stiffness constants. The obtained elastic constants, elastic moduli, and Vickers hardness values of Ti$_2$PB$_2$, Zr$_2$PbB$_2$,…
Structural, elastic, electronic and optical properties of laves phase intermetallic compounds CaRh2 and LaRh2 prototype with MgCu2 are investigated by using the first principle calculations. These calculations stand on density functional theory (DFT) from CASTEP code. The calculated lattice parameters are consistent with the experimental values. The significant elastic properties, like as bulk modulus, shear modulus, Youngs modulus and the Poissons ratio are determined by applying the Voigt Reuss Hill (VRH) approximation. The analysis of Pughs ratio shows the ductile nature of both the phases.…

Our calculated electronic structure indicates that it is a direct bandgap semiconductor, with a value ~1.2 eV. Sr-4d and N-2p orbitals mainly formulate the direct bandga…
Divalent cations mixed lead halide perovskites with enhanced performances, high stabilities, and reduced toxicity are requisite to make persistent progress in perovskite solar cells. However, the mixing strategy is not reported extensively in search of a lead reduced structure. Herein, we report the structural, electronic and optical properties of RbPb{1-x}MxI3 (where, M={Sn,Ge} and x={0.25, 0.50, 0.75}) by alloying the B-site with Sn and Ge, using the density functional theory. The formation enthalpy is estimated for all RbPb{1-x}MxI3 (with x= 0.25, 0.50, 0.75), which confirms stability for a…
Due to its strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy, FePt L1$\mathrm{_0}$ phase is considered as a promising magnetic recording media material. Although the magnetic properties of this phase have already been analyzed many times using density functional theory (DFT), we decided to study it again, emphasizing on full potential methods, including spin-polarized relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (SPR-KKR) and full-potential local-orbital (FPLO) scheme. In addition to the determination of exact values of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy constants K$\mathrm{_1}$ and K$\mathrm{_2}$, the magnetic mome…
Recently, Bafekry et al. [Appl. Phys. Lett. 119, 142102 (2021)] reported their density functional theory (DFT) results on the elastic constants of a novel C6N7 monolayer. They predicted a very soft elastic modulus of 36.29 GPa for the C6N7 monolayer, which is remarkably low for carbon-nitride 2D lattices. Using DFT calculations, we predict a remarkably higher elastic modulus of 267 GPa for this monolayer. The maximum tensile strength is also predicted to be 20.5 GPa, revealing the outstanding mechanical properties of the C6N7 monolayer.
We use density functional theory to explore the possibility of making the semiconducting transition-metal dichalcogenide MoS$_2$ ferromagnetic by introducing holes into the narrow Mo $d$ band that forms the top of the valence band. In the single impurity limit, the repulsive Coulomb potential of an acceptor atom and intervalley scattering lead to a twofold orbitally degenerate effective-mass like $e'$ state being formed from Mo $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $d_{xy}$ states, bound to the K and K$'$ valence band maxima. It also leads to a singly degenerate $a'_1$ state with Mo $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ character bound…
We perform a theoretical study of the electronic structure and magnetic properties of the prototypical magnetic MAX-phase Mn$_2$GaC with the main focus given to the origin of magnetic interactions in this system. Using the density functional theory+dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) method we explore the effects of electron-electron interactions and magnetic correlations on the electronic properties, magnetic state, and spectral weight coherence of paramagnetic and magnetically-ordered phases of Mn$_2$GaC. We also benchmark the DFT-based disordered local moment approach for this system by …
By including a fraction of exact exchange (EXX), hybrid functionals reduce the self-interaction error in semi-local density functional theory (DFT), and thereby furnish a more accurate and reliable description of the electronic structure in systems throughout biology, chemistry, physics, and materials science. However, the high computational cost associated with the evaluation of all required EXX quantities has limited the applicability of hybrid DFT in the treatment of large molecules and complex condensed-phase materials. To overcome this limitation, we have devised a linear-scaling yet form…
