Parker Solar Probe (PSP) entered a region of the sub-Alfvenic solar wind during encounter 8 and we present the first detailed analysis of low-frequency turbulence properties in this novel region. The magnetic field and flow velocity vectors were highly aligned during this interval. By constructing spectrograms of the normalized magnetic helicity, cross helicity, and residual energy, we find that PSP observed primarily Alfvenic fluctuations, a consequence of the highly field-aligned flow that renders quasi-2D fluctuations unobservable to PSP. We extend Taylor hypothesis to sub and super Alfvenic flows. Spectra for the fluctuating forward and backward Elsasser variables are presented. The observed spectra are well fitted using a spectral theory for nearly incompressible magnetohydrodynamics assuming a wave number anisotropy. The density spectrum is a power law that resembles neither the Elsasser spectra nor the compressible magnetic field spectrum, suggesting that these are advected entropic rather than magnetosonic modes and not due to the parametric decay instability. Spectra in the neighboring modestly super Alfvenic intervals are similar.
The observed sub-proton scale turbulence spectrum in the solar wind raises the question of how that turbulence originates. Observations of keV energetic electrons during solar quite-time suggest them as possible source of free energy to drive the turbulence. Using particle-in-cell simulations, we explore how free energy in energetic electrons, released by an electron two-stream instability drives Weibel-like electromagnetic waves that excite wave-wave interactions. Consequently, both kinetic Alfvénic and whistler waves are excited that evolve through inverse and forward magnetic energy cascade…
The dynamic evolution of coronal mass ejection (CME) in interplanetary space generates highly turbulent, compressed, and heated shock-sheath. This region furnishes a unique environment to study the turbulent fluctuations at the small scales and serve an opportunity for unfolding the physical mechanisms by which the turbulence is dissipated and plasma is heated. How does the turbulence in the magnetized plasma control the energy transport process in space and astrophysical plasmas is an attractive and challenging open problem of the 21st century. For this, the literature discusses three types o…
We conduct a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation of the parametric decay instability of Alfvén waves and resultant compressible MHD turbulence, which is likely to develop in the solar wind acceleration region. Because of the presence of the mean magnetic field, the nonlinear stage is characterized by filament-like structuring and anisotropic cascading. By calculating the timescales of phase mixing and the evolution of Alfvén wave turbulence, we have found that the early nonlinear stage is dominated by phase mixing, while the later phase is dominated by imbalanced Alfvén wave…

We develop a 1D solar-wind model that includes separate energy equations for the electrons and protons, proton temperature anisotropy, collisional and collisionless heat flux, and an analytical treatment of low-frequency, reflection-driven, Alfven-wave turbulence. To partition the turbulent heating between electron heating, parallel proton heating, and perpendicular proton heating, we employ results from the theories of linear wave damping and nonlinear stochastic heating. We account for mirror and oblique firehose instabilities by increasing the proton pitch-angle scattering rate when the pro…
We propose a simple statistical model of three-dimensionally anisotropic, intermittent, strong Alfvénic turbulence, incorporating both critical balance and dynamic alignment. Our model is based on log-Poisson statistics for Elsasser-field increments along the magnetic field. We predict the scalings of Elsasser-field conditional two-point structure functions with point separations in all three directions in a coordinate system locally aligned with the direction of the magnetic field and of the fluctuating fields and obtain good agreement with numerical simulations. We also derive a scaling of t…
One proposed mechanism for heating the solar wind, from close to the sun to beyond 10 AU, invokes low-frequency, oblique, Alfven-wave turbulence. Because small-scale oblique Alfven waves (kinetic Alfven waves) are compressive, the measured density fluctuations in the solar wind place an upper limit on the amplitude of kinetic Alfven waves and hence an upper limit on the rate at which the solar wind can be heated by low-frequency, Alfvenic turbulence. We evaluate this upper limit for both coronal holes at 5 solar radii and in the near-Earth solar wind. At both radii, the upper limit we find is …
We make use of the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) data to explore the nature of solar wind turbulence focusing on the Alfvénic character and power spectra of the fluctuations and their dependence on distance and context (i.e. large scale solar wind properties), aiming to understand the role that different effects such as source properties, solar wind expansion, stream interaction might play in determining the turbulent state. We carry out a statistical survey of the data from the first five orbits of PSP with a focus on how the fluctuation properties at the large, MHD scales, vary with different sol…
In the framework of compressional magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), we numerically studied the commonly accepted presumption that the Alfvénic turbulence is generated by the collisions between counter-propagating Alfvén waves (AWs). In the conditions typical for the low-beta solar corona and inner solar wind, we launched two counter-propagating AWs in the three-dimensional simulation box and analyzed polarization and spectral properties of perturbations generated before and after AW collisions. The observed post-collisional perturbations have different polarizations and smaller cross-field scales th…
Turbulent magnetic field fluctuations observed in the solar wind often maintain a constant magnitude condition accompanied by spherically polarized velocity fluctuations; these signatures are characteristic of large-amplitude Alfvén waves. Nonlinear energy transfer in Alfvénic turbulence is typically considered in the small-amplitude limit where the constant magnitude condition may be neglected; in contrast, nonlinear energy transfer in the large-amplitude limit remains relatively unstudied. We develop a method to analyze finite-amplitude turbulence through studying fluctuations as constant ma…
We investigate properties of the plasma fluid motion in the large amplitude low frequency fluctuations of highly Alfvénic fast solar wind. We show that protons locally conserve total kinetic energy when observed from an effective frame of reference comoving with the fluctuations. For typical properties of the fast wind, this frame can be reasonably identified by alpha particles, which, owing to their drift with respect to protons at about the Alfvén speed along the magnetic field, do not partake in the fluid low frequency fluctuations. Using their velocity to transform proton velocity into the…
Observations reveal nearly power-law spectra of magnetic and density plasma fluctuations at subproton scales in the solar wind, which indicates the presence of a turbulent cascade. We discuss the three-field and two-field models for micro-scale plasma fluctuations, and then present the results of numerical simulations of a two-field model of kinetic-Alfven turbulence, which models plasma motion at sub-proton scales.
Anisotropic Alfvénic fluctuations with $k_{\parallel}/k_{\perp}\ll 1$ remain at frequencies much smaller than the ion cyclotron frequency in the presence of a strong background magnetic field. Based on the simplest truncation of the electromagnetic gyrofluid equations in a homogeneous plasma, a model for the energy cascade produced by Alfvénic turbulence is constructed, which smoothly connect the large magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) scales and the small "kinetic" scales. Scaling relations are obtained for the electromagnetic fluctuations, as a function of $k_{\perp}$ and $k_{\parallel}$. Moreover,…
We present the first measurement of the scale-dependent power anisotropy of Elsasser variables in imbalanced fast solar wind turbulence. The dominant Elsasser mode is isotropic at lower spacecraft frequencies but becomes increasingly anisotropic at higher frequencies. The sub-dominant mode is anisotropic throughout, but in a scale-independent way (at higher frequencies). There are two distinct subranges exhibiting different scalings within what is normally considered the inertial range. The low Alfven ratio and shallow scaling of the sub-dominant Elsasser mode suggest an interpretation of the …
We present results from a three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation of plasma turbulence, resembling the plasma conditions found at kinetic scales of the solar wind. The spectral properties of the turbulence in the subion range are consistent with theoretical expectations for kinetic Alfv\' en waves. Furthermore, we calculate the local anisotropy, defined by the relation $k_{\parallel}(k_{\perp})$, where $k_{\parallel}$ is a characteristic wave number along the local mean magnetic field at perpendicular scale $l_{\perp}\sim 1/k_{\perp}$. The subion range anisotropy is scale dependent with …
In the lower solar coronal regions where the magnetic field is dominant, the Alfven speed is much higher than the wind speed. In contrast, the near-Earth solar wind is strongly super-Alfvenic, i.e., the wind speed greatly exceeds the Alfven speed. The transition between these regimes is classically described as the "Alfven point" but may in fact occur in a distributed Alfven critical region. NASA's Parker Solar Probe (PSP) mission has entered this region, as it follows a series of orbits that gradually approach more closely to the sun. During its 8th and 9th solar encounters, at a distance of …
In this paper, we study the constraints imposed by the invariants (generalized helicities and energy) of extended magnetohydrodynamics on some global characteristics of turbulence. We show that the global turbulent kinetic and magnetic energies will approach equipartition only under certain circumstances that depend on the ratio of the generalized helicities. In systems with minimal thermal energy, we demonstrate that the three invariants collectively determine the characteristic length scale associated with Alfvénic turbulence.
We present an updated global model of the solar corona, including the transition region. We simulate the realistic tree-dimensional (3D) magnetic field using the data from the photospheric magnetic field measurements and assume the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) Alfvén wave turbulence and its non-linear dissipation to be the only source for heating the coronal plasma and driving the solar wind. In closed field regions the dissipation efficiency in a balanced turbulence is enhanced. In the coronal holes we account for a reflection of the outward propagating waves, which is accompanied by generation …
Turbulence is a phenomenon found throughout space and astrophysical plasmas. It plays an important role in solar coronal heating, acceleration of the solar wind, and heating of the interstellar medium. Turbulence in these regimes is dominated by Alfven waves. Most turbulence theories have been established using ideal plasma models, such as incompressible MHD. However, there has been no experimental evidence to support the use of such models for weakly to moderately collisional plasmas which are relevant to various space and astrophysical plasma environments. We present the first experiment to …
The collisionless dissipation of anisotropic Alfvénic turbulence is a promising candidate to solve the solar wind heating problem. Extensive studies examined the kinetic properties of Alfvén waves in simple Maxwellian or bi-Maxwellian plasmas. However, the observed electron velocity distribution functions in the solar wind are more complex. In this study, we analyze the properties of kinetic Alfvén waves in a plasma with two drifting electron populations. We numerically solve the linearized Maxwell-Vlasov equations and find that the damping rate and the proton-electron energy partition for kin…
The nature of subproton scale fluctuations in the solar wind is an open question, partly because two similar types of electromagnetic turbulence can occur: kinetic Alfven turbulence and whistler turbulence. These two possibilities, however, have one key qualitative difference: whistler turbulence, unlike kinetic Alfven turbulence, has negligible power in density fluctuations. In this Letter, we present new observational data, as well as analytical and numerical results, to investigate this difference. The results show, for the first time, that the fluctuations well below the proton scale are p…
A three-dimensional MHD model for the propagation and dissipation of Alfven waves in a coronal loop is developed. The model includes the lower atmospheres at the two ends of the loop. The waves originate on small spatial scales (less than 100 km) inside the kilogauss flux elements in the photosphere. The model describes the nonlinear interactions between Alfven waves using the reduced MHD approximation. The increase of Alfven speed with height in the chromosphere and transition region (TR) causes strong wave reflection, which leads to counter-propagating waves and turbulence in the photospheri…
We study the formation and evolution of a turbulent spectrum of Alfvén waves driven by reflection off the solar wind density gradients, starting from the coronal base up to 17 solar radii, well beyond the Alfvénic critical point. The background solar wind is assigned and 2D shell models are used to describe nonlinear interactions. We find that the turbulent spectra are influenced by the nature of reflected waves. Close to the base, these give rise to a flatter and steeper spectrum for the outgoing and reflected waves respectively. At higher heliocentric distance both spectra evolve toward an a…
Using a three-dimensional compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation, we have reproduced the fast solar wind in a direct and self-consistent manner, based on the wave/turbulence driven scenario. As a natural consequence of Alfvenic perturbations at its base, highly compressional and turbulent fluctuations are generated, leading to heating and acceleration of the solar wind. The analysis of power spectra and structure functions reveals that the turbulence is characterized by its imbalanced (in the sense of outward Alfvenic fluctuations) and anisotropic nature. The density fluctuation ori…
Alfvénic turbulent cascade perpendicular and parallel to the background magnetic field is studied accounting for anisotropic dispersive effects and turbulent intermittency. The perpendicular dispersion and intermittency make the perpendicular-wavenumber magnetic spectra steeper and speed up production of high ion-cyclotron frequencies by the turbulent cascade. On the contrary, the parallel dispersion makes the spectra flatter and decelerate the frequency cascade above the ion-cyclotron frequency. Competition of the above factors results in spectral indices distributed in the interval [-2,-3], …
Alfvén waves as excited in black hole accretion disks and neutron star magnetospheres are the building blocks of turbulence in relativistic, magnetized plasmas. A large reservoir of magnetic energy is available in these systems, such that the plasma can be heated significantly even in the weak turbulence regime. We perform high-resolution three-dimensional simulations of counter-propagating Alfvén waves, showing that an $E_{B_{\perp}}(k_{\perp}) \propto k_{\perp}^{-2}$ energy spectrum develops as a result of the weak turbulence cascade in relativistic magnetohydrodynamics and its infinitely ma…
Measurements of solar wind turbulence reveal the ubiquity of discontinuities. In this study, we investigate how the discontinuities, especially rotational discontinuities (RDs), are formed in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. In a simulation of the decaying compressive three-dimensional (3-D) MHD turbulence with an imposed uniform background magnetic field, we detect RDs with sharp field rotations and little variations of magnetic field intensity as well as mass density. At the same time, in the de Hoffman-Teller (HT) frame, the plasma velocity is nearly in agreement with the Alfvén speed,…
We present numerical evidence that in strong Alfvenic turbulence, the critical balance principle---equality of the nonlinear decorrelation and linear propagation times---is scale invariant, in the sense that the probability distribution of the ratio of these times is independent of scale. This result only holds if the local alignment of the Elsasser fields is taken into account in calculating the nonlinear time. At any given scale, the degree of alignment is found to increase with fluctuation amplitude, supporting the idea that the cause of alignment is mutual dynamical shearing of Elsasser fi…
A new particle acceleration process in a developing Alfvén turbulence in the course of successive parametric instabilities of a relativistic pair plasma is investigated by utilyzing one-dimensional electromagnetic full particle code. Coherent wave-particle interactions result in efficient particle acceleration leading to a power-law like energy distribution function. In the simulation high energy particles having large relativistic masses are preferentially accelerated as the turbulence spectrum evolves in time. Main acceleration mechanism is simultaneous relativistic resonance between a parti…
Alfvén wave collisions are the primary building blocks of the non-relativistic turbulence that permeates the heliosphere and low-to-moderate energy astrophysical systems. However, many astrophysical systems such as gamma-ray bursts, pulsar and magnetar magnetospheres, and active galactic nuclei have relativistic flows or energy densities. To better understand these high energy systems, we derive reduced relativistic MHD equations and employ them to examine weak Alfvénic turbulence, dominated by three-wave interactions, in reduced relativistic magnetohydrodynamics, including the force-free, inf…
The measured spectrum of kinetic Alfven wave fluctuations in the turbulent solar wind plasma is used to calculate the electron and ion distribution functions resulting from quasi-linear diffusion. The modified ion distribution function is found to be unstable to long wavelength electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves. These waves pitch angle scatter the parallel ion velocity into perpendicular velocity which effectively increases the perpendicular ion temperature.
We present numerical simulations of reduced magnetohydrodynamic (RMHD) turbulence in a magnetic flux tube at the center of a polar coronal hole. The model for the background atmosphere is a solution of the momentum equation, and includes the effects of wave pressure on the solar wind outflow. Alfvén waves are launched at the coronal base, and reflect at various heights due to variations in Alfvén speed and outflow velocity. The turbulence is driven by nonlinear interactions between the counter-propagating Alfvén waves. Results are presented for two models of the background atmosphere. In the f…
Kinetic Alfvén waves (KAWs) are the short-wavelength extension of the MHD Alfvén-wave branch in the case of highly-oblique propagation with respect to the background magnetic field. Observations of space plasma show that small-scale turbulence is mainly KAW-like. We apply two theoretical approaches, collisional two-fluid theory and collisionless kinetic theory, to obtain predictions for the KAW polarizations depending on $β_\mathrm{p}$ (the ratio of the proton thermal pressure to the magnetic pressure) at the ion gyroscale in terms of fluctuations in density, bulk velocity, and pressure. We pe…

The nature of solar wind turbulence at large scale is rather well understood in the theoretical framework of magnetohydrodynamics. The situation is quite different at sub-proton scales where the magnetic energy spectrum measured by different spacecrafts does not fit with the classical turbulence predictions: a power law index close to $-8/3$ is generally reported which is far from the predictions of strong and wave turbulence, $-7/3$ and $-5/2$ respectively. This discrepancy is considered as a major problem for solar wind turbulence. Here, we show with a nonlinear diffusion model of weak kinet…
A model for strong kinetic Alfvén plasma turbulence at scales smaller than the ion gyroscale is proposed. It is argued that magnetic and density fluctuations are concentrated mostly at two-dimensional structures, which leads to their Fourier energy spectra $E(k_\perp)\propto k_{\perp}^{-8/3}$, where $k_\perp$ is the wave-vector component normal to the strong background magnetic field. The results are shown to be in good agreement with numerical simulations, and they can explain recent observations of magnetic and density fluctuations in the solar wind at sub-proton scales.
We study the heating of charged test particles in three-dimensional numerical simulations of weakly compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence (``Alfvenic turbulence''); these results are relevant to particle heating and acceleration in the solar wind, solar flares, accretion disks onto black holes, and other astrophysics and heliospheric environments. The physics of particle heating depends on whether the gyrofrequency of a particle is comparable to the frequency of a turbulent fluctuation that is resolved on the computational domain. Particles with these frequencies nearly equal under…
Recent observations have demonstrated that waves which are capable of carrying large amounts of energy are ubiquitous throughout the solar corona. However, the question of how this wave energy is dissipated (on which time and length scales) and released into the plasma remains largely unanswered. Both analytic and numerical models have previously shown that Alfvénic turbulence may play a key role not only in the generation of the fast solar wind, but in the heating of coronal loops. In an effort to bridge the gap between theory and observations, we expand on a recent study [De Moortel et al., …
{This work aims to investigate the spectral structure of the parallel electric field generated by strong anisotropic and balanced Alfvenic turbulence in relation with the problem of electron acceleration from the thermal population in solar flare plasma conditions.} {We consider anisotropic Alfvenic fluctuations in the presence of a strong background magnetic field. Exploiting this anisotropy, a set of reduced equations governing non-linear, two-fluid plasma dynamics is derived. The low-$β$ limit of this model is used to follow the turbulent cascade of the energy resulting from the non-linear …

In this paper, we report our detailed analysis of the new strong-coupling regime between Alfvén and fast modes in Poynting-dominated plasma turbulence, reported in our previous work Takamoto & Lazarian (2016), which is an important effect for many relativistic plasma phenomena, and calls for new theories of Poynting-dominated MHD turbulence. We performed numerical simulations of relativistic MHD turbulence in isothermal plasmas, and analyzed the ratio of fast to Alfvén mode energy. We found that the increase of the fast mode with the background $σ$-parameter can be observed even in isothermal …
The effects of the heliospheric current sheet (HCS) on the evolution of Alfvénic turbulence in the solar wind are studied using MHD simulations incorporating the expanding-box-model (EBM). The simulations show that near the HCS, the Alfvénicity of the turbulence decreases as manifested by lower normalized cross helicity and larger excess of magnetic energy. The numerical results are supported by a superposed-epoch analysis using OMNI data, which shows that the normalized cross helicity decreases inside the plasma sheet surrounding HCS, and the excess of magnetic energy is significantly enhance…
A pair of nonlinear diffusion equations in Fourier space} is used to study the dynamics of strong Alfvén-wave turbulence, from MHD to electron scales. Special attention is paid to the regime of imbalance between the energies of counter-propagating waves commonly observed in the solar wind (SW), especially in regions relatively close to the Sun. In the collisionless regime where dispersive effects arise at scales comparable to or larger than those where dissipation becomes effective, the imbalance produced by a given injection rate of generalized cross-helicity (GCH), which is an invariant, is …
It has been shown in a previous work that torsional Alfvén waves can drive turbulence in nonuniform coronal loops with a purely axial magnetic field. Here we explore the role of the magnetic twist. We model a coronal loop as a transversely nonuniform straight flux tube, anchored in the photosphere, and embedded in a uniform coronal environment. We consider that the magnetic field is twisted and control the strength of magnetic twist by a free parameter of the model. We excite the longitudinally fundamental mode of standing torsional Alfvén waves, whose temporal evolution is obtained by means o…
Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) observations of plasma turbulence generated by a Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) event at the Earth's magnetopause are compared with a high-resolution two-dimensional (2D) hybrid direct numerical simulation (DNS) of decaying plasma turbulence driven by large-scale balanced Alfvénic fluctuations. The simulation, set up with four observation-driven physical parameters (ion and electron betas, turbulence strength, and injection scale) exhibits a quantitative agreement on the spectral, intermittency, and cascade-rate properties with in situ observations, despite the different…
Turbulence profoundly affects particle transport and plasma heating in many astrophysical plasma environments, from galaxy clusters to the solar corona and solar wind to Earth's magnetosphere. Both fluid and kinetic simulations of plasma turbulence ubiquitously generate coherent structures, in the form of current sheets, at small scales, and the locations of these current sheets appear to be associated with enhanced rates of dissipation of the turbulent energy. Therefore, illuminating the origin and nature of these current sheets is critical to identifying the dominant physical mechanisms of d…
This paper summarises some of the recent progress that has been made in understanding astrophysical plasma turbulence in the solar wind, from in situ spacecraft observations. At large scales, where the turbulence is predominantly Alfvenic, measurements of critical balance, residual energy, and 3D structure are discussed, along with comparison to recent models of strong Alfvenic turbulence. At these scales, a few percent of the energy is also in compressive fluctuations, and their nature, anisotropy, and relation to the Alfvenic component is described. In the small scale kinetic range, below th…
In hydrodynamic turbulence, it is well established that the length of the dissipation scale depends on the energy cascade rate, i.e., the larger the energy input rate per unit mass, the more the turbulent fluctuations need to be driven to increasingly smaller scales to dissipate the larger energy flux. Observations of magnetic spectral energy densities indicate that this intuitive picture is not valid in solar wind turbulence. Dissipation seems to set in at the same length scale for different solar wind conditions independently of the energy flux. To investigate this difference in more detail,…
In the present paper, we investigate the power-law behaviour of the magnetic field spectra in the Earths magnetosheath region using Cluster spacecraft data under solar minimum condition. The power spectral density of the magnetic field data and spectral slopes at various frequencies are analysed. Propagation angle and compressibility are used to test the nature of turbulent fluctuations. The magnetic field spectra have the spectral slopes between -1.5 to 0 down to spatial scales of 20 ion gyroradius and show clear evidence of a transition to steeper spectra for small scales with a second power…
A two-field Hamiltonian gyrofluid model for kinetic Alfvén waves retaining ion finite Larmor radius corrections, parallel magnetic field fluctuations and electron inertia, is used to study turbulent cascades from the MHD to the sub-ion scales. Special attention is paid to the case of imbalance between waves propagating along or opposite to the ambient magnetic field. For weak turbulence in the absence of electron inertia, kinetic equations for the spectral density of the conserved quantities (total energy and generalized cross-helicity) are obtained. They provide a global description, matching…
In this Letter, we report compressible mode effects on relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (RMHD) turbulence in Poynting-dominated plasmas using 3-dimensional numerical simulations. We decomposed fluctuations in the turbulence into 3 MHD modes (fast, slow, and Alfvén) following the procedure mode decomposition in (Cho & Lazarian 2002), and analyzed their energy spectra and structure functions separately. We also analyzed the ratio of compressible mode to Alfvén mode energy with respect to its Mach number. We found the ratio of compressible mode increases not only with the Alfvén Mach number but w…
This paper considers turbulent damping of Alfven waves in magnetized plasmas. We identify two cases of damping, one related to damping of cosmic rays streaming instability, the other related to damping of Alfven waves emitted by a macroscopic wave source, e.g. stellar atmosphere. The physical difference between the two cases is that in the former case the generated waves are emitted in respect to the local direction of magnetic field, in the latter in respect to the mean field. The scaling of damping is different in the two cases. We the regimes of turbulence ranging from subAlfvenic to superA…
We study the influence of kinetic-scale Alfvénic turbulence on the generation of plasma radio emission in the solar coronal regions where the plasma/magnetic pressure ratio $β$ is smaller than the electron/ion mass ratio $m_{e}/m_{i}$. The present study is motivated by the phenomenon of solar type I radio storms associated with the strong magnetic field of active regions. The measured brightness temperature of the type I storms can be up to $10^{10}$ K for continuum emission, and can exceed $10^{11}$ K for type I bursts. At present, there is no generally accepted theory explaining such high br…
