We report on the formation of topological defects emerging from the cycloidal antiferromagnetic order at the surface of bulk BiFeO$_3$ crystals. Combining reciprocal and real-space magnetic imaging techniques, we first observe, in a single ferroelectric domain, the coexistence of antiferromagnetic domains in which the antiferromagnetic cycloid propagates along different wavevectors. We then show that the direction of these wavevectors is not strictly locked to the preferred crystallographic axes as continuous rotations bridge different wavevectors. At the junctions between the magnetic domains, we observe topological line defects identical to those found in a broad variety of lamellar physical systems with rotational symmetries. Our work establishes the presence of these magnetic objects at room temperature in the multiferroic antiferromagnet BiFeO$_3$, offering new possibilities for their use in spintronics.
Non-collinear antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetals, combining the advantages of a zero stray field and ultrafast spin dynamics as well as a large anomalous Hall effect and the chiral anomaly of Weyl fermions, have attracted extensive interests. However, the all-electrical control of such systems at room temperature, a crucial step toward practical applications, has not been reported. Here using a small writing current of around 5*10^{6} A/cm^{2}, we realize the all-electrical current-induced deterministic switching of the non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn3Sn with a strong readout signal at room te…
Ferromagnetic spin-valves and tunneling junctions are crucial for spintronics applications and are one of the most fundamental spintronics devices. Motivated by the potential unique advantages of antiferromagnets for spintronics, we theoretically study here junctions built out of non-collinear antiferromagnets. We demonstrate a large and robust magnetoresistance and spin-transfer torque capable of ultrafast switching between parallel and anti-parallel states of the junction. In addition, we show that the non-collinear order results in a spin-transfer torque that is in several key aspects diffe…
We show that the quantum anomalous Hall effect almost always occurs in magnetic topological insulator thin films whenever the top and bottom surface layer magnetizations are parallel, independent of the interior layer magnetization configuration. Using this criteria we identify structures that have a quantum anomalous Hall effect even though they have collinear magnetic structures with no net magnetization, and discuss strategies for realizing these interesting magnetic states experimentally.
An antiferromagnet is a promising material for spin-orbit torque generation. Earlier studies of the spin-orbit torque in an antiferromagnet are limited to collinear spin configurations. We calculate the spin-orbit torque in an antiferromagnet whose spin ordering is weakly noncollinear. Such noncollinearity may be induced spontaneously during the magnetization dynamics even when the equilibrium spin configuration is perfectly collinear. It is shown that deviation from perfect collinearity can modify properties of the spin-orbit torque since noncollinearity generates extra Berry phase contributi…
There is accelerating interest in developing memory devices using antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials, motivated by the possibility for electrically controlling AFM order via spin-orbit torques, and its read-out via magnetoresistive effects. Recent studies have shown, however, that high current densities create non-magnetic contributions to resistive switching signals in AFM/heavy metal (AFM/HM) bilayers, complicating their interpretation. Here we introduce an experimental protocol to unambiguously distinguish current-induced magnetic and nonmagnetic switching signals in AFM/HM structures, and d…
Harnessing the unique properties of non-collinear antiferromagnets (AFMs) will be essential for exploiting the full potential of antiferromagnetic spintronics. Indeed, many of the effects enabling ferromagnetic spintronic devices have a corresponding counterpart in materials with non-collinear spin structure. In addition, new phenomena such as the magnetic spin Hall effect were experimentally observed in non-collinear AFMs, and the presence of the equivalent to the ferromagnetic spin transfer torque via spin polarized currents was theoretically predicted. In spite of these developments, an int…
We show that proper control of magnetization textures can be achieved in noncollinear antiferromagnets. This opens the versatile toolbox of domain-wall manipulation in the context of a different family of materials. In this way, we show that noncollinear antiferromagnets are a good prospect for applications in the context of antiferromagnetic spintronics. As in many noncollinear antiferromagnets, the order parameter field takes values in SO(3). By performing a gradient expansion in the energy functional we derive an effective theory that accounts for the physics of the magnetization of long-wa…
We report measurements demonstrating that when the Neel vector of the collinear antiferromagnet RuO2 is appropriately canted relative to the sample plane, the antiferromagnet generates a substantial out of plane damping-like torque. The measurements are in good accord with predictions that when an electric field, E is applied to the spin split band structure of RuO2 it can cause a strong transverse spin current even in the absence of spin-orbit coupling. This produces characteristic changes in all three components of the E induced torque vector as a function of the angle of E relative to the c…
Electrons, commonly moving along the applied electric field, acquire in certain magnets a dissipationless transverse velocity. This spontaneous Hall effect, discovered more than a century ago, has been understood in terms of the time-reversal symmetry breaking by the internal spin-structure of a ferromagnetic, noncolinear antiferromagnetic or skyrmionic form. Here we identify previously overlooked robust Hall effect mechanism arising from collinear antiferromagnetism combined with nonmagnetic atoms at non-centrosymmetric positions. We predict a large magnitude of this crystal Hall effect in a …
A systematic framework to investigate spin dynamics in non-collinear antiferromagnet is proposed. Taking Mn$_3$Sn as a representative example, we derive an effective low energy model based on the multipole expansion of the magnetic structure, and investigate the uniform precession and the domain wall dynamics. We show that the solution for the effective model accurately reproduces the numerical calculation of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations. Our results indicate that Mn$_3$Sn has preferable properties for applications to a racetrack memory and a spin torque oscillator, and thus, is a pro…
We demonstrate theoretically that the thermal Hall effect of magnons in collinear antiferromagnetic insulators is an indicator of magnetic and topological phase transitions in the magnon spectrum. The transversal heat current of magnons caused by a thermal gradient is calculated for an antiferromagnet on a honeycomb lattice. An applied magnetic field drives the system from the antiferromagnetic phase via a spin-flop phase into the field-polarized phase. Besides these magnetic phase transitions we find topological phase transitions within the spin-flop phase. Both types of transitions manifest …
Time-reversal symmetry breaking is the basic physics concept underpinning many magnetic topological phenomena such as the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and its quantized variant. The AHE has been primarily accompanied by a ferromagnetic dipole moment, which hinders the topological quantum states and limits data density in memory devices, or by a delicate noncollinear magnetic order with strong spin decoherence, both limiting their applicability. A potential breakthrough is the recent theoretical prediction of the AHE arising from collinear antiferromagnetism in an anisotropic crystal environment…
In a collinear antiferromagnet with easy-axis anisotropy, symmetry guarantees that the spin wave modes are doubly degenerate. The two modes carry opposite spin angular momentum and exhibit opposite chirality. Using a honeycomb antiferromagnet in the presence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, we show that a longitudinal temperature gradient can drive the two modes to opposite transverse directions, realizing a spin Nernst effect of magnons with vanishing thermal Hall current. We find that magnons around the Γ-point and the K-point contribute oppositely to the transverse spin transport, …
Cavity spintronics explores light matter interactions at the interface between spintronic and quantum phenomena. Until now, studies have focused on the hybridization between ferromagnets and cavity photons. In this article, we realize antiferromagnetic cavity-magnon polaritons. The collective spin motion in single hematite crystals (α-Fe2O3) hybridizes with 18 - 45 GHz microwave cavity photons with required specific symmetries. We show theoretically and experimentally that the photon-magnon coupling in the collinear phase is mediated by the dynamical Neel vector and the weak magnetic moment in …
The spontaneous Hall effect is usually governed by three conventional mechanisms, such as the Berry curvature, skew scattering and side jump, which widely exist in ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic materials. However, in this work, based on first principle calculations, we predict a giant crystal Hall effect (CHE) in the antiferromagnetic $γ$-FeMn, which can not be understood by the previous three conventional mechanisms and the Hall angle therein can be as large as 18.4% at low temperature. Furthermore, with Boltzmann transport equation and a tight-binding model, we conclude that, the asymme…
Noncollinear antiferromagnets, such as Mn$_3$Sn and Mn$_3$Ir, were recently shown to be analogous to ferromagnets in that they have a large anomalous Hall effect. Here we show that these materials are similar to ferromagnets in another aspect: the charge current in these materials is spin-polarized. In addition, we show that the same mechanism that leads to the spin-polarized current also leads to a transverse spin current, which has a distinct symmetry and origin from the conventional spin Hall effect. We illustrate the existence of the spin-polarized current and the transverse spin current b…

We study the topological property of the magnetoelastic excitation in non-collinear antiferromagnets. As a toy model, we consider the magnon-phonon coupling in a triangular antiferromagnet with a $120^\circ$ Nèel order. We find that in the presence of out-of-plane external magnetic field, the magnon-polaron bands, which arise from hybridization of magnons and phonons, can carry Chern number, even though the individual magnon and phonon bands are topologically trivial. Large Berry curvature is induced from the anti-crossing regions between the magnon and phonon bands, which renormalizes the the…
We present a theoretical study of excitations formed by hybridization between magnons and phonons - magnon-polarons - in antiferromagnets. We first outline a general approach to determining which magnon and phonon modes can and cannot hybridize in a system thereby addressing the qualitative questions concerning magnon-polaron formation. As a specific and experimentally relevant case, we study Nickel Oxide quantitatively and find perfect agreement with the qualitative analysis, thereby highlighting the strength of the former. We find that there are two distinct features of antiferromagnetic mag…
CrSb is an attractive material for room-temperature antiferromagnetic spintronic applications because of its high Néel temperature $\sim$700 K and semi-metallic character. We study the magnetic properties of CrSb bilayers on few-layer topological insulator thin films using \emph{ab initio} density functional theory. We find that the intrinsic parts of the total anomalous Hall conductivities of the thin films are non-zero, and approximately quantized. The Néel temperature of CrSb bilayers on few-layer topological insulator thin films is found to be approximately two times larger than that of an…
Electrical detection of the 180 deg spin reversal, which is the basis of the operation of ferromagnetic memories, is among the outstanding challenges in the research of antiferromagnetic spintronics. Analogous effects to the ferromagnetic giant or tunneling magnetoresistance have not yet been realized in antiferromagnetic multilayers. Anomalous Hall effect (AHE), which has been recently employed for spin reversal detection in non-collinear antiferromagnets, is limited to materials that crystalize in ferromagnetic symmetry groups. Here we demonstrate electrical detection of the 180 deg Néel vec…
We propose that non-collinear magnetic order in quantum magnets can harbor a novel higher-order topological magnon phase with non-Hermitian topology and hinge magnon modes. We consider a three-dimensional system of interacting local moments on stacked-layers of honeycomb lattice. It initially favors a collinear magnetic order along an in-plane direction, which turns into a non-collinear order upon applying an external magnetic field perpendicular to the easy axis. We exploit the non-Hermitian nature of the magnon Hamiltonian to show that this field-induced transition corresponds to the transfo…
We report on magneto-optical studies of the quasi-two-dimensional van der Waals antiferromagnet FePS$_3$. Our measurements reveal an excitation that closely resembles the antiferromagnetic resonance mode typical of easy-axis antiferromagnets, nevertheless, it displays an unusual, four-times larger Zeeman splitting in an applied magnetic field. We identify this excitation with an $|S_z|=4$ multipolar magnon -- a single-ion 4-magnon bound state -- that corresponds to a full reversal of a single magnetic moment of the Fe$^{2+}$ ion. We argue that condensation of multipolar magnons in large-spin m…
Antiferromagnetic thin films are currently generating considerable excitement for low dissipation magnonics and spintronics. However, while tuneable antiferromagnetic textures form the backbone of functional devices, they are virtually unknown at the submicron scale. Here we image a wide variety of antiferromagnetic spin textures in multiferroic BiFeO3 thin films that can be tuned by strain and manipulated by electric fields through room temperature magnetoelectric coupling. Using piezoresponse force microscopy and scanning NV magnetometry in self-organized ferroelectric patterns of BiFeO3, we…

Non-collinear chiral antiferromagnets like Mn3Sn and Mn3Ge are known to show gigantic anomalous Hall response depending on the orientation of their inverse chiral magnetic order of Mn atoms in Kagome layers. Here we study the stability of such magnetic order in the absence of external magnetic fields on the basis of stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation for a simplified two-dimensional model of these materials. We find that even without external magnetic fields, the ordered state is, once formed, highly stable against thermal fluctuations. Moreover, we show that if Mn spins are well conf…
Antiferromagnetic materials are of great interest for spintronics. Here we present a comprehensive study of the growth, structural characterization, and resulting magnetic properties of thin films of the non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn$_{3}$Ir. Using epitaxial engineering on MgO (001) and Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ (0001) single crystal substrates, we control the growth of cubic $γ$-Mn$_{3}$Ir in both (001) and (111) crystal orientations, and discuss the optimization of growth conditions to achieve high-quality crystal structures with low surface roughness. Exchange bias is studied in bilayers, with exc…
By combining two independent approaches, inelastic neutron scattering measurements and density functional theory calculations, we study the spin-waves in the high-temperature collinear antiferromagnetic phase (AFM2) of Mn$_5$Si$_3$. We obtain its magnetic ground-state properties and electronic structure. This study allowed us to determine the dominant magnetic exchange interactions and magnetocrystalline anisotropy in the AFM2 phase of Mn$_5$Si$_3$. Moreover, the evolution of the spin excitation spectrum is investigated under the influence of an external magnetic field perpendicular to the ani…
The viability of past, current and future devices for information technology hinges on their sensitivity to the presence of impurities. The latter can lead to resistivity anomalies, the so-called Kondo effect, reshape extrinsically Hall effects or reduce the efficiency of magnetoresistance effects essential in spintronics. Here we demonstrate that atomic defects enable highly efficient all-electrical detection of spin-swirling textures, in particular magnetic skyrmions, which are promising bits candidates in future spintronics devices. Impurities amplify the bare transport signal and can alter…
We resolve the domain-wall structure of the model antiferromagnet $\text{Cr}_2\text{O}_3$ using nanoscale scanning diamond magnetometry and second-harmonic-generation microscopy. We find that the 180$^\circ$ domain walls are predominantly Bloch-like, and can co-exist with Néel walls in crystals with significant in-plane anisotropy. In the latter case, Néel walls that run perpendicular to a magnetic easy axis acquire a well-defined chirality. We further report quantitative measurement of the domain-wall width and surface magnetization. Our results provide fundamental input and an experimental m…
We study the magnetic properties of small Mn ring shaped clusters on a Pt(111) surface in the framework of density functional theory. We find that the Mn atoms possess large magnetic moments, of the order of 4uB/atom, and have dominating antiferromagnetic interatomic exchange interactions. A quantum confinement effect within the ring like clusters was found, indicating that even very small clusters can be seen as quantum corrals. The antiferromagnetic exchange couplings lead to collinear magnetic arrangements in simple corrals, as well as complex non-collinear ordering, as vortex-like structur…
Recent studies revealed that the electric multipole moments of insulators result in fractional electric charges localized to the hinges and corners of the sample. We here explore the magnetic analog of this relation. We show that a collinear antiferromagnet with spin $S$ defined on a $d$-dimensional cubic lattice features fractionally quantized magnetization $M_{\text{c}}^z=S/2^d$ at the corners. We find that the quantization is robust even in the presence of gapless excitations originating from the spontaneous formation of the Néel order, although the localization length diverges, suggesting …
We report on Cr doping effect in Mn3Sn polycrystalline films with both uniform and modulation doping. It is found that Cr doping with low concentration does not cause notable changes to the structural and magnetic properties of Mn3Sn, but it significantly enhances the anomalous Hall conductivity, particularly for modulation-doped samples at low temperature. A Hall conductivity as high as 184.8 Ω-1 cm-1 is obtained for modulation-doped samples at 50 K, in a sharp contrast to vanishingly small values for undoped samples at the same temperature. We attribute the enhancement to the change of Fermi…
Using first-principles calculations, we study the occurrence of non-collinear magnetic order in monatomic Mn chains. First, we focus on freestanding Mn chains and demonstrate that they exhibit a pronounced non-collinear ground state in a large range of interatomic distances between atoms in the chain. By artificially varying the atomic number of Mn we investigate how the magnetic ground state is influenced by alloying the Mn chains with Fe and Cr. With increasing number of 3d-electrons we find a smooth transition in the magnetic phase space starting from an antiferromagnetic state for pure Cr …
The anomalous Hall effect is investigated theoretically by means of density functional calculations for the non-collinear antiferromagnetic order of the hexagonal compounds Mn$_3$Ge and Mn$_3$Sn using various planar triangular magnetic configurations as well as unexpected non-planar configurations. The former give rise to anomalous Hall conductivities (AHC) that are found to be extremely anisotropic. For the planar cases the AHC is connected with Weyl-points in the energy-band structure, which are described in detail. If this case were observable in Mn$_3$Ge, a large AHC of about 900 S/cm shou…
We report a combined study of imaging the antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin structure and measuring the spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) in epitaxial thin films of the insulating non-collinear antiferromagnet SmFeO$_3$. X-ray magnetic linear dichroism photoemission electron microscopy measurements reveal that the AFM spins of the SmFeO$_3$(110) align in the plane of the film. Angularly dependent magnetoresistance measurements show that SmFeO$_3$/Ta bilayers exhibit a positive SMR, in contrast to the negative SMR expected in previously studied collinear AFMs. The SMR amplitude increases linearly wi…
We consider theoretically the impact of Rashba spin-orbit coupling on spin torque oscillators (STOs) in synthetic ferromagnets and antiferromagnets that have either a bulk multilayer or a thin film structure. The synthetic magnets consist of a fixed polarizing layer and two free magnetic layers that interact through the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction. We determine analytically which collinear states along the easy axis that are stable, and establish numerically the phase diagram for when the system is in the STO mode and when collinear configurations are stable, respectively. It is …
In this Letter we present a comprehensive study of topological magnon bands and thermal Hall effect in non-collinear antiferromagnetic systems on the honeycomb lattice with an intrinsic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We theoretically show that the system possesses topological magnon bands with Chern number protected edge modes accompanied by a nonzero thermal magnon Hall effect. These features result from non-collinearity of the magnetic moments due to an applied out-of-plane magnetic field. Our results provide an experimental clue towards the realization of topological magnon transports i…
A rich variety of specific multidomain textures recently observed in antiferromagnetically coupled multilayers with perpendicular anisotropy include regular (equilibrium) multidomain states as well as different types of topological magnetic defects. Within a phenomenological theory we have classified and analyzed the possible magnetic defects in the antiferromagnetic ground state and determine their structures. We have derived the optimal sizes of the defects as functions of the antiferromagnetic exchange, the applied magnetic field, and geometrical parameters of the multilayer. The calculated…
