End-to-end jitter of a flow is an important metric that indicates the Quality of Service a user is experiencing, particularly for real-time applications such as video streaming, cloud gaming, and so on. Monitoring the jitter can help controllers make routing decisions for certain flows. This paper discusses methods in which we can estimate/follow important patterns in the end-to-end jitter of a flow. Two main approaches are taken, one using a Software Defined Network controller and the other using P4 programmable data-planes. Results from the simulations of each method are discussed.
Characterization of data network monitoring registers allows for reductions in the number of data, which is essential when the information flow is high, and implementation of processes with short response times, such as interchange of control information between devices and anomaly detection is required. The present investigation applied wavelet transforms, so as to characterize the statistic monitoring register of a software-defined network. Its main contribution lies in the obtention of a record that, although reduced, retains detailed, essential information for the correct application of an…
OpenFlow is a protocol implementing Software Defined Networking, a new networking paradigm, which segregates packet forwarding and accounting (performed on switches) from the routing decisions and advanced protocols (executed on a central controller). This segregation increases agility and flexibility of a networking infrastructure and reduces its operational expenses. OpenFlow controllers expose standard interfaces to facilitate variety of networking applications. In particular, a monitoring application can use these interfaces to push into the OpenFlow switches rules that collect traffic flo…
We propose a Distributed and Collaborative Monitoring system, DCM, with the following properties. First, DCM allow switches to collaboratively achieve flow monitoring tasks and balance measurement load. Second, DCM is able to perform per-flow monitoring, by which different groups of flows are monitored using different actions. Third, DCM is a memory-efficient solution for switch data plane and guarantees system scalability. DCM uses a novel two-stage Bloom filters to represent monitoring rules using small memory space. It utilizes the centralized SDN control to install, update, and reconstruct…
Network monitoring and measurement are crucial in network management to facilitate quality of service routing and performance evaluation. Software Defined Networking (SDN) makes network management easier by separating the control plane and data plane. Network monitoring in SDN is lightweight as operators only need to install a monitoring module into the controller. Active monitoring techniques usually introduce too many overheads into the network. The state-of-the-art approaches utilize sampling method, aggregation flow statistics and passive measurement techniques to reduce overheads. However…
Network modeling is a critical component for building self-driving Software-Defined Networks, particularly to find optimal routing schemes that meet the goals set by administrators. However, existing modeling techniques do not meet the requirements to provide accurate estimations of relevant performance metrics such as delay and jitter. In this paper we propose a novel Graph Neural Network (GNN) model able to understand the complex relationship between topology, routing and input traffic to produce accurate estimates of the per-source/destination pair mean delay and jitter. GNN are tailored to…
Network monitoring and measurement are crucial in network management to facilitate quality of service routing and performance evaluation. Hence, SDN can support a wide range of middleware services; network performance monitoring is an example of these services that are already deployed in practice. In this paper, we exploit the use of SDNs to efficiently provide application monitoring functionality. The recent rise of complex cloud applications has made performance monitoring a major issue. We show that many performance indicators…
Software-Defined Wide Area Networks (SD-WANs) are used to provide services to enterprises with geographically dispersed locations in a flexible and efficient way. We focus on SD-WAN services based on the Segment Routing over IPv6 (SRv6) technology. Performance Monitoring solutions are needed in SD-WANs to detect performance degradation and outages, and optimize network operations. In this paper, we describe a high performance solution for end-to-end delay monitoring for SRv6 based SD-WAN services. The proposed solution leverages the Simple Two-way Active Measurement Protocol (STAMP) to monitor…
The fast evolving nature of modern cyber threats and network monitoring needs calls for new, "software-defined", approaches to simplify and quicken programming and deployment of online (stream-based) traffic analysis functions. StreaMon is a carefully designed data-plane abstraction devised to scalably decouple the "programming logic" of a traffic analysis application (tracked states, features, anomaly conditions, etc.) from elementary primitives (counting and metering, matching, events generation, etc), efficiently pre-implemented in the probes, and used as common instruction set for supporti…
Abstraction applied in computer networking hides network details behind a well-defined representation by building a model that captures an essential aspect of the network system. Two current methods of representation are available, one based on graph theory, where a network node is reduced to a point in a graph, and the other the use of non-methodological iconic depictions such as human heads, walls, towers or computer racks. In this paper, we adopt an abstract representation methodology, the thinging machine (TM), proposed in software engineering to model computer networks. TM defines a singl…
Most Software Defined Networks (SDN) traffic engineering applications use excessive and frequent global monitoring in order to find the optimal Quality-of-Service (QoS) paths for the current state of the network. In this work, we present the motivations, architecture and initial evaluation of a SDN application called Cognitive Routing Engine (CRE) which is able to find near-optimal paths for a user-specified QoS while using a very small monitoring overhead compared to global monitoring which is required to guarantee that optimal paths are found. Smaller monitoring overheads bring the advantage…
Obtaining flow-level measurements, similar to those provided by Netflow/IPFIX, with OpenFlow is challenging as it requires the installation of an entry per flow in the flow tables. This approach does not scale well with the number of concurrent flows in the traffic as the number of entries in the flow tables is limited and small. Flow monitoring rules may also interfere with forwarding or other rules already present in the switches, which are often defined at different granularities than the flow level. In this paper, we present a transparent and scalable flow-based monitoring solution that is…
Presence of a logically centralized controller in software-defined networks enables smart and fine-grained management of network traffic. Generally, traffic management includes measurement, analysis and control of traffic in order to improve resource utilization. This is done by inspecting corresponding performance requirements using metrics such as packet delay, jitter, loss rate and bandwidth utilization from global network view. There has been many works regarding traffic management of software-defined networks and how it could help to efficiently allocate resources. However, the vast major…
Now days, interests in the application of Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) have grown considerably. A number of tiny wireless sensors, strategically placed on the human body, create a wireless body area network that can monitor various vital signs, providing real-time feedback to the user and medical personnel. This communication needs to be energy efficient and highly reliable while keeping delays low. In this paper we present hardware and software architecture for BAN and also we offer reliable communication and data aggregation.
An approach to using the concept of Software-Defined Networking and Network Functions Virtualization (SDN/NFV) for the implementation of an information security monitoring and management system in 5G and 6G networks is proposed. SDN switches based on the OpenFlow protocol are offered as network sensors. In order to reduce the time for finding a subset of the right rules in the vast array of all rules on traffic filtering systems that are logically located on sensors, a method of processing and filtering traffic in 5G and 6G transport networks is proposed. This method is based on DPDK with the …
We introduce the real-time multi-technology transport layer monitoring to facilitate the coordinated virtualisation of optical and Ethernet networks supported by optical virtualise-able transceivers (V-BVT). A monitoring and network resource configuration scheme is proposed to include the hardware monitoring in both Ethernet and Optical layers. The scheme depicts the data and control interactions among multiple network layers under the software defined network (SDN) background, as well as the application that analyses the monitored data obtained from the database. We also present a re-configur…

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) introduces a centralized network control and management by separating the data plane from the control plane which facilitates traffic flow monitoring, security analysis and policy formulation. However, it is challenging to choose a proper degree of traffic flow handling granularity while proactively protecting forwarding devices from getting overloaded. In this paper, we propose a novel traffic flow matching control framework called Q-DATA that applies reinforcement learning in order to enhance the traffic flow monitoring performance in SDN based networks and …
Applying high-speed real-time wireless technologies in industrial applications has the great potential to reduce the deployment and maintenance costs compared to their wired counterparts. Wireless technologies enhance the mobility and reduce the communication jitter and delay for mobile industrial equipment, such as mobile collaborative robots. Unfortunately, most existing wireless solutions employed in industrial fields either cannot support the desired high-speed communications or cannot guarantee deterministic, real-time performance. A more recent wireless technology, RT-WiFi, achieves a go…
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has recently attracted a lot of attention, transitioning from research labs to a wide range of successful deployments in many fields, which is particularly true for Deep Learning (DL) techniques. Ultimately, DL models being software artifacts, they need to be regularly maintained and updated: AIOps is the logical extension of the DevOps software development practices to AI-software applied to network operation and management. In the lifecycle of a DL model deployment, it is important to assess the quality of deployed models, to detect "stale" models and prioritize …
