Active control and manipulation of electromagnetic waves are highly desirable for advanced photonic device technology, such as optical cloaking, active camouflage and information processing. Designing optical resonators with high ease-of-control and reconfigurability remains a open challenge thus far. Here we propose a novel mechanism to continuously reconfigure an optical resonator between one-port and two-port configurations via \emph{phase-change material} for efficient optical modulation. By incorporating a phase-change material VO$_2$ substrate into a photonic crystal optical resonator, we computationally show that the system behaves as a one-port device with near-perfect absorption and two-port device with high transmission up to 92% when VO$_2$ is in the metallic rutile phase and insulating monoclinic phase, respectively. The optical response can be continuously and reversibly modulated between various intermediate states. More importantly, the proposed device is compatible with wide-angle operation and is robust against structural distortion. Our findings reveal a novel device architecture of \emph{port reconfigurable} optical resonator uniquely enabled by switchable optical properties of phase change material.
We report a tunable optical filter based on phase change material $Ge_{2}Sb_{2}Te_{5}$ embedded in a silicon microring resonator. The high thermo-optic coefficient of $Ge_{2}Sb_{2}Te_{5}$ in amorphous phase enables tuning of resonance wavelength in broad range with a very small active volume. The low-loss indium-tin-oxide electrodes are employed to induce Joule heating in $Ge_{2}Sb_{2}Te_{5}$-Si active waveguide region. The electrically induced heating in the active region alters the effective refractive index of hybrid microring resulting in a wavelength tuning of 1.04 nm for an applied volta…
We present a reconfigurable topological photonic system consisting of a 2D lattice of coupled ring resonators, with two sublattices of site rings coupled by link rings, which can be accurately described by a tight-binding model. Unlike previous coupled-ring topological models, the design is translationally invariant, similar to the Haldane model, and the nontrivial topology is a result of next-nearest couplings with non-zero staggered phases. The system exhibits a topological phase transition between trivial and spin Chern insulator phases when the sublattices are frequency detuned. Such topol…

Scattering immune propagation of light in topological photonic systems may revolutionarize the design of integrated photonic circuits for information processing and communications. In optics, various photonic topological circuits have been developed, which were based on classical emulation of either quantum spin Hall effect or quantum valley Hall effect. On the other hand, the combination of both the valley and spin degrees of freedom can lead to a new kind of topological transport phenomenon, dubbed quantum spin valley Hall effect (QSVH), which can further expand the number of topologically p…
We report a wavelength division multiplexed time-bin entangled photon pair source in telecom wavelength using a 10 μm radius Si ring resonator. This compact resonator has two add ports and two drop ports. By pumping one add port by a continuous laser, we demonstrate an efficient generation of two-wavelength division multiplexed time-bin entangled photon pairs in the telecom C-band, which come out of one drop port, and are then split into the signal and idler photons via a wavelength filter. The resonator structure enhances four wave mixing for pair generation. Moreover, we demonstrate the doub…
Transient fully reconfigurable photonic circuits can be introduced at the optical fiber surface with subangstrom precision. A building block of these circuits, a 0.7 angstrom-precise nano-bottle resonator, is experimentally created by local heating, translated, and annihilated.
Fully reconfigurable metasurfaces would enable new classes of optical devices that provide unprecedented control of electromagnetic beamforms. The principal challenge for achieving reconfigurability is the need to generate large tunability of subwavelength, low-Q metasurface resonators. Here, we demonstrate large refractive index tuning can be efficiently facilitated at mid-infrared wavelengths using novel temperature-dependent control over free-carrier refraction. In doped InSb we demonstrate nearly two-fold increase in the electron effective mass leading to a positive refractive index shift …
This abstract presents an aluminum nitride (AlN) piezoelectric actuator for tuning optical resonance modes of silicon nitride photonic resonators. The AlN actuator is fabricated on top of a thick silicon dioxide cladding that encapsulates the nitride resonator and waveguide. The PORT is defined by undercutting the cladding layer with a lateral silicon etch. It tunes the optical wavelength by 20pm on applying 60 V to the top electrode with a 0.5nA current draw. The thick oxide cladding preserves the resonator's loaded quality factor Q optical of 64,000 across the entire tuning range. The first …
We demonstrate an eight-channel reconfigurable optical filter on a silicon chip consisting of cascaded microring resonators and integrated compact heaters. With an embedded Mach-Zehnder (MZ) arm coupling to a microring resonator, the important parameters of a filter such as center frequency, extinction ratio and bandwidth can be controlled simultaneously for purposes of filtering, routing and spectral shaping, thus making our method potentially useful in dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) and radio frequency arbitrary waveform generation (RFAWG). Multichannel filter response was suc…
We demonstrate advanced transversal radio frequency (RF) and microwave functions based on a Kerr optical comb source generated by an integrated micro-ring resonator. We achieve extremely high performance for an optical true time delay aimed at tunable phased array antenna applications, as well as reconfigurable microwave photonic filters. Our results agree well with theory. We show that our true time delay would yield a phased array antenna with features that include high angular resolution and a wide range of beam steering angles, while the microwave photonic filters feature high Q factors, w…
We have investigated the unique effects of metallic nanoparticle on the ring resonator, especially multiple Au nanoparticles on the micro ring resonator with the 4-port configuration on chip. For the Au nanoparticle, because it has smaller real refractive index than air and large absorption refractive index, we found that there is a blue shift for the ring resonance wavelength, instead of red shift normally observed for dielectric nanoparticles. The drop port intensity is strongly dependent on both number and size of nanoparticles, while relatively independent on position of nanoparticles. The…
Two graphene-based T-shaped multifunctional components for THz and Far-Infrared regions are proposed and analyzed. The first component can serve as a divider, a switch and a dynamically controllable filter. This T-junction presents a circular graphene resonator and three graphene waveguides with surface plasmon-polariton waves connected frontally to the resonator. The resonator can be adjusted to work with dipole, quadrupole or hexapole modes. The graphene elements are deposited on a $SiO_{2}$ (silica) and $Si$ (silicon) two-layer substrate. The dynamical control and switching of the component…
Optical circulators are important components of modern day communication technology. With their ability to route photons directionally, these nonreciprocal elements provide useful functionality in photonic circuits and offer prospects for fundamental research on information processing. Developing highly efficient optical circulators thus presents an important challenge, in particular to realize compact reconfigurable implementations that do not rely on a magnetic field bias to break reciprocity. We demonstrate optical circulation based on radiation pressure interactions in an on-chip multimode…
Two types of novel graphene-based components, namely, filters and electro-optical switches in guided wave configuration are suggested and analysed. The filters differ from the known ones with collinear orientation of the input and output waveguides by geometry and symmetry. The components consist of a circular graphene disk and two nanoribbons oriented at $90^\circ$ to each other in the plane of the graphene layer. The graphene elements are placed on a dielectric substrate. We show that change in symmetry leads to a drastic change in the properties of the components. The physical principle of …
Reconfigurability of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) has become increasingly important due to the growing demands for electronic-photonic systems on a chip driven by emerging applications, including neuromorphic computing, quantum information, and microwave photonics. Success in these fields usually requires highly scalable photonic switching units as essential building blocks. Current photonic switches, however, mainly rely on materials with weak, volatile thermo-optic or electro-optic modulation effects, resulting in a large footprint and high energy consumption. As a promising alternati…
Non-reciprocal devices, which allow the non-reciprocal signal routing, serve as the fundamental elements in photonic and microwave circuits and are crucial in both classical and quantum information processing. The radiation-pressure-induced coupling between light and mechanical motion in traveling wave resonators has been exploited to break the Lorentz reciprocity, realizing non-reciprocal devices without magnetic materials. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a reconfigurable nonreciprocal device with alternative functions of either a circulator or a directional amplifier via the optomechanic…
We consider a coupled mode system where the effective propagation constants of localized modes are amenable to modulation. Starting from an unmodulated system where power transfer is heavily suppressed, we demonstrate that small, periodic modulation of the propagation constants enhance power transfer using a slowly varying envelope approximation for the field mode amplitudes. We calculate an approximate modulation frequency enabling complete transfer between otherwise negligibly coupled elements. The ability to control these modulations by electrical or thermal effects allows for reconfigurabl…
We demonstrate the optical coupling of two cavities without light transmission through a substrate. Compared to a conventional coupling component, that is a partially transmissive mirror, an all-reflective coupler avoids light absorption in the substrate and therefore associated thermal problems, and even allows the use of opaque materials with possibly favourable mechanical and thermal properties. Recently, the all-reflective coupling of two cavities with a low-efficiency 3-port diffraction grating was theoretically investigated. Such a grating has an additional (a third) port. However, it wa…
We propose a new graphene-based THz circulator. It consists of a circular graphene resonator and three graphene nanoribbon waveguides of W-geometry placed on a dilectric substrate. Surface plasmon-polariton waves propagate in the waveguides. The nanoribbon excites in the resonator dipole resonance. Nonreciprocity of the device is defined by nonsymmetry of the conductivity tensor of the magnetized graphene. The circulator with the central frequency 7.5 THz has the bandwidth 4.25\% for isolation -15 dB, insertion loss -2.5 dB. Applied DC magnetic field is 0.56T and Fermi energy of graphene $ε_F=…
Spatio-temporal modulation has shown great promise as a strong time-reversal symmetry breaking mechanism that enables integrated nonreciprocal devices and topological materials at optical frequencies. However, optical modulation has its own constraints in terms of modulation index and frequency, which limit the bandwidth and miniaturization of circulators and isolators, not unlike the magneto-optical schemes that it promises to replace. Here we propose and numerically demonstrate a Floquet circulator that leverages the untapped degrees of freedom unique to time-modulated resonators. Excited by…
Here we demonstrate an on-chip electro-optic frequency shifter that is precisely controlled using only a single-tone microwave signal. This is accomplished by engineering the density of states of, and coupling between, optical modes in ultra-low loss electro-optic waveguides and resonators realized in lithium niobate nanophotonics. Our device provides frequency shifts as high as 28 GHz with measured shift efficiencies of ~99% and insertion loss of <0.5 dB. Importantly, the device can be reconfigured as a tunable frequency-domain beam splitter, in which the splitting ratio and splitting frequen…
Inducing nonreciprocal wave propagation is a fundamental challenge across a wide range of physical systems in electromagnetics, optics, and acoustics. Recent efforts to create nonreciprocal devices have departed from established magneto-optic methods and instead exploited momentum based techniques such as coherent spatiotemporal modulation of resonators and waveguides. However, to date the nonreciprocal frequency responses that such devices can achieve have been limited, mainly to either broadband or Lorentzian-shaped transfer functions. Here we show that nonreciprocal coupling between wavegui…
In this paper, we derive a model from Maxwell equations for the magnetic resonance of split-ring resonators. Using this model we revisit the scaling of split-ring resonators. Inspired by our model, we propose a new type of split-hybrid metal-dielectric ring resonator, of which the ring is made composed of moderately high index dielectric material (e.g. SiC, TiO2, ZnS) (for the major portion), while and metal (e.g. Ag) fills the gap. Such a new magnetic metamaterial is able to overcome the saturation problem of split-ring resonatorssaturation-free and therefore is able to operate at short wavel…
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a microwave photonic intensity differentiator based on a Kerr optical comb generated by a compact integrated micro-ring resonator (MRR). The on-chip Kerr optical comb, containing a large number of comb lines, serves as a high-performance multi-wavelength source for implementing a transversal filter, which will greatly reduce the cost, size, and complexity of the system. Moreover, owing to the compactness of the integrated MRR, frequency spacings of up to 200-GHz can be achieved, enabling a potential operation bandwidth of over 100 GHz. By programming a…

Light carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) has been shown to be of use in a disparate range of fields ranging from astronomy to optical trapping, and as a promising new dimension for multiplexing signals in optical communications and data storage. A challenge to many of these applications is a reliable and dynamic method that sorts incident OAM states without altering them. Here we report a wavelength-independent technique capable of dynamically filtering individual OAM states based on the resonant transmission of a tunable optical cavity. The cavity length is piezo-controlled to facilitate…
We encapsulated a high-quality (Q) factor optical whispering gallery mode (WGM) microtoroid resonator together with its side coupled fiber taper inside a low refractive index polymer, achieving a final Q higher than 10^7. Packaging provides stable resonator-fiber taper coupling, long-term maintenance of high-Q, a protective layer against contaminants, and portability to microtoroid resonator based devices. We tested the robustness of the packaged device under various conditions and demonstrated its capability for thermal sensing.
Metasurfaces exploit the ability to engineer the optical phase, amplitude and polarization at subwavelength dimensions providing unprecedented control of light. The realization of the all dielectric approach to metasurfaces has led to the demonstration of extensive flat optical elements and functionalities with low losses. However, to reach their ultimate potential, metasurfaces must move beyond static operation and incorporate active tunability and reconfigurable functions. The central challenge is achieving large tunability in subwavelength resonator elements which require large optical effe…
The exponential growth of photonic quantum technologies is driving the demand of tools for measuring the quality of their information carriers. One of the most prominent is Stimulated Emission Tomography (SET), which uses classical coherent fields to measure the Joint Spectral Amplitude (JSA) of photon pairs with high speed and resolution. While the modulus of the JSA can be directly addressed from a single intensity measurement, the retrieval of the Joint Spectral Phase (JSP) is far more challenging and received minor attentions. However, a wide class of spontaneous sources of technological r…
Control of the polarization state of light is essential for many technologies, but is often limited by weak light-matter interactions that necessitate long device path lengths or significantly reduce the signal intensity. Here, we investigate a nanoscale plasmonic aperture capable of modifying the polarization state of far-field transmitted light without loss in the probe signal. The aperture is a coaxial resonator consisting of a dielectric ring embedded within a metallic film; parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric inclusions of loss and gain within the dielectric ring enable polarization co…

Molecular optomechanics stems from the description of Raman scattering in the presence of an optical resonator using a cavity optomechanics formalism. We extend the molecular optomechanics formalism to the case of hybrid dielectric-plasmonic resonators, with multiple optical resonances and with both free-space and waveguide addressing. We demonstrate how the Raman enhancement is the product of a pump enhancement and a modified LDOS, that simply depend on the complex response functions of the hybrid system. The Fano lineshapes that result from hybridization of a broadband and narrowband modes a…
Wireless transfer of information is the basis of modern communication. It includes cellular, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS systems, all of which use electromagnetic radio waves with frequencies ranging from typically 100 MHz to a few GHz. However, several long-standing challenges with standard radio-wave wireless transmission still exist, including keeping secure transmission of data from potential compromise. Here, we demonstrate wireless information transfer using a line-of-sight optical architecture with a micromechanical element. In this fundamentally new approach, a laser beam encoded with info…
The present work focuses on experimental investigations of a bistabile silicon-on-insulator (SOI) micro-ring resonator (MRR). The resonator exploits a continuous-wave operation of the carrier-induced bistability demonstrating a stable hysteresis response at the through and drop ports when the input power exceeds the threshold value. Flipping the optical input power provides a convenient mechanism for a switching of the MRR output characteristics between two steady states having a long holding time. The transition of the resonator output between these states is experimentally investigated. It i…
