We present a reconfigurable topological photonic system consisting of a 2D lattice of coupled ring resonators, with two sublattices of site rings coupled by link rings, which can be accurately described by a tight-binding model. Unlike previous coupled-ring topological models, the design is translationally invariant, similar to the Haldane model, and the nontrivial topology is a result of next-nearest couplings with non-zero staggered phases. The system exhibits a topological phase transition between trivial and spin Chern insulator phases when the sublattices are frequency detuned. Such topological phase transitions can be easily induced by thermal or electro-optic modulators, or nonlinear cross phase modulation. We use this lattice to design reconfigurable topological waveguides, with potential applications in on-chip photon routing and switching.
Active control and manipulation of electromagnetic waves are highly desirable for advanced photonic device technology, such as optical cloaking, active camouflage and information processing. Designing optical resonators with high ease-of-control and reconfigurability remains a open challenge thus far. Here we propose a novel mechanism to continuously reconfigure an optical resonator between one-port and two-port configurations via \emph{phase-change material} for efficient optical modulation. By incorporating a phase-change material VO$_2$ substrate into a photonic crystal optical resonator, w…
We report a tunable optical filter based on phase change material $Ge_{2}Sb_{2}Te_{5}$ embedded in a silicon microring resonator. The high thermo-optic coefficient of $Ge_{2}Sb_{2}Te_{5}$ in amorphous phase enables tuning of resonance wavelength in broad range with a very small active volume. The low-loss indium-tin-oxide electrodes are employed to induce Joule heating in $Ge_{2}Sb_{2}Te_{5}$-Si active waveguide region. The electrically induced heating in the active region alters the effective refractive index of hybrid microring resulting in a wavelength tuning of 1.04 nm for an applied volta…

Scattering immune propagation of light in topological photonic systems may revolutionarize the design of integrated photonic circuits for information processing and communications. In optics, various photonic topological circuits have been developed, which were based on classical emulation of either quantum spin Hall effect or quantum valley Hall effect. On the other hand, the combination of both the valley and spin degrees of freedom can lead to a new kind of topological transport phenomenon, dubbed quantum spin valley Hall effect (QSVH), which can further expand the number of topologically p…
We report intracavity Bragg scattering induced by photorefractive (PR) effect in high-Q lithium niobate (LN) ring resonators at cryogenic temperatures. We show that, when a cavity mode is strongly excited, the PR effect imprints a long-lived periodic space-charge field. This residual field in turn creates a refractive index modulation pattern that dramatically enhances the back scattering of an incoming probe light, and results in selective and reconfigurable mode splittings. This PR-induced Bragg scattering effect, despite being undesired for many applications, could be utilized to enable opt…
The exponential growth of photonic quantum technologies is driving the demand of tools for measuring the quality of their information carriers. One of the most prominent is Stimulated Emission Tomography (SET), which uses classical coherent fields to measure the Joint Spectral Amplitude (JSA) of photon pairs with high speed and resolution. While the modulus of the JSA can be directly addressed from a single intensity measurement, the retrieval of the Joint Spectral Phase (JSP) is far more challenging and received minor attentions. However, a wide class of spontaneous sources of technological r…
We propose a new driving scheme, when different parts of a system are driven with different, generally incommensurate, frequencies. Such driving provides a flexible handle to control various properties of the system and to obtain new types of effective (static) Hamiltonians with arbitrary static on-site potential, be it deterministic or random. This allows us to obtain reconfigurable changes in transport, from ballistic to localized (including sub- and super-diffusion), depending on the driving protocol. The versatile reconfigurability extends also to scattering from (locally) driven extended …
We consider a coupled mode system where the effective propagation constants of localized modes are amenable to modulation. Starting from an unmodulated system where power transfer is heavily suppressed, we demonstrate that small, periodic modulation of the propagation constants enhance power transfer using a slowly varying envelope approximation for the field mode amplitudes. We calculate an approximate modulation frequency enabling complete transfer between otherwise negligibly coupled elements. The ability to control these modulations by electrical or thermal effects allows for reconfigurabl…

We experimentally realize a photonic analogue of the anomalous quantum Hall insulator using a two-dimensional (2D) array of coupled ring resonators. Similar to the Haldane model, our 2D array is translation invariant, has zero net gauge flux threading the lattice, and exploits next-nearest neighbor couplings to achieve a topologically non-trivial bandgap. Using direct imaging and on-chip transmission measurements, we show that the bandgap hosts topologically robust edge states. We demonstrate a topological phase transition to a conventional insulator by frequency detuning the ring resonators a…

Compact, high-speed electro-optic phase modulators play a vital role in various large-scale applications including phased arrays, quantum and neural networks, and optical communication links. Conventional phase modulators suffer from a fundamental tradeoff between device length and optical loss that limits their scaling capabilities. High-finesse ring resonators have been traditionally used as compact intensity modulators, but their use for phase modulation have been limited due to the high insertion loss associated with the phase change. Here, we show that high-finesse resonators can achieve …
Resonant lattice Kerker effect in periodic resonators is one of the most interesting generalizations of the Kerker effect that relates to various fascinating functionalities such as scattering management and Huygens metasurfaces. However, so far this effect has been shown to be sensitive to the incident polarization, restricting its applications. Here, we report, for the first time, polarization-independent resonant lattice Kerker effect in metasurfaces composed of periodic Ge$_2$Se$_2$Te$_5$ (GST) disks. For such a metasurface of square lattice, the spectrally overlap of the electric dipole a…
