The present work focuses on experimental investigations of a bistabile silicon-on-insulator (SOI) micro-ring resonator (MRR). The resonator exploits a continuous-wave operation of the carrier-induced bistability demonstrating a stable hysteresis response at the through and drop ports when the input power exceeds the threshold value. Flipping the optical input power provides a convenient mechanism for a switching of the MRR output characteristics between two steady states having a long holding time. The transition of the resonator output between these states is experimentally investigated. It is shown that the switching speed is limited by a low-to-high transition of 188 ns. Obtained results shows an application of the passive SOI MRR as an all-optical memory cell with two complementary outputs.
We present a compact on-chip resonator enhanced silicon-MSM photodetector in $850$ $nm$ wavelength band for communication and lab-on-chip bio-sensing applications. We report the highest responsivity of 0.81 A/W for a 5 $μm$ long device. High responsivity is achieved by integrating the detector in a silicon nitride ring resonator. The resonance offers 100X responsivity improvement over a single-pass photodetector due to cavity enhancement. We also present a detailed study of the high-speed response of the cavity and single-pass detector. We report an electro-optic bandwidth of 7.5 GHz measured …
The design and experimental demonstration of a large-area, ultra-high-Q-factor and single-mode operation silicon ring resonator based on a strip silicon photonic waveguide are presented, which is suitable for photon gyroscopic application. Based on these designs, simulation results show that the resonance depth is 0.9979 while the resonator is in an undercoupled state with the coupling length L=2um and coupling gap d=0.2um. For the fabricated resonator, the ultrahigh Q factor of 1.54*106 is experimentally demonstrated, with the free spectrum range (FSR) of 0.036nm and the resonance depth is 0.…

Non-linear and bistable optical systems are a key enabling technology for the next generation optical networks and photonic neural systems with many potential applications in optical logic and information processing. Here, we propose a novel bistable resonator-free all-optical waveguide device based on indium tin oxide as nonlinear epsilon-near-zero material providing a cost-efficient and high-performance binarity photonic platform. The salient features of the proposed device are compatibility with silicon photonics, enabling sub-picosecond operation speeds with moderate switching power. The d…
Stable light bullets and clusters of them are presented in the monostable regime using the mean-field Lugiato-Lefever equation [Gopalakrishnan, Panajotov, Taki, and Tlidi, Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 153902 (2021)]. It is shown that three-dimensional (3D) dissipative structures occur in a strongly nonlinear regime where modulational instability is subcritical. We provide a detailed analysis on the formation of optical 3D crystals in both the super- and sub-critical modulational instability regimes, and we highlight their link to the formation of light bullets in diffractive and dispersive Kerr reson…
Ideal ring resonators are characterized by travelling-wave counterpropagating modes, but in practice travelling waves can only be realized under unidirectional operation, which has proved elusive. Here, we have designed and fabricated a monolithic quantum cascade ring laser coupled to an active waveguide that allows for robust, deterministic and controllable unidirectional operation. Spontaneous emission injection through the active waveguide enables dynamical switching between the clockwise and counterclockwise states of the ring laser with as little as 1.6% modulation of the electrical input…
We report enhanced nonlinear optics in nanowires, waveguides, and ring resonators by introducing layered two-dimensional (2D) graphene oxide (GO) films through experimental demonstration. The GO films are integrated on silicon-on-insulator nanowires (SOI), high index doped silica glass, and silicon nitride (SiN) waveguides and microring resonators (MRRs), to demonstrate an improved optical nonlinearity including Kerr nonlinearity and four-wave mixing (FWM). By using a large-area, transfer-free, layer-by-layer GO coating method with photolithography and lift-off processes, we integrate GO films…
Optomechanical resonators were fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate that had been implanted with phosphorus donors. The resonators' mechanical and optical properties were then measured (at 6 kelvin and room temperature) before and after the substrate was annealed. All measured resonators survived the annealing and their mechanical linewidths decreased while their optical and mechanical frequencies increased. This is consistent with crystal lattice damage from the ion implantation causing the optical and mechanical properties to degrade and then subsequently being repaired by th…
Silicon ring resonator-based devices, such as modulators, detectors, filters, and switches, play important roles in integrated photonic circuits for optical communication, high-performance computing, and sensing applications. However, the high sensitivity to fabrication variations has limited their volume manufacturability and commercial adoption. Here, we report a low-cost post-fabrication trimming method to tune the resonance wavelength of a silicon ring resonator and correct for fabrication variations at wafer-scale. We use a Ge implant to create an index trimmable section in the ring reson…
We propose a new label-free ultrasonic sensor, which comprises a slot wave-guide and double silicon-on-insulator (SOI) slot micro-ring resonators. The all-optical sensors do not suffer from electromagnetic interference. We choose to integrate a silicon slot double micro-ring (SDMR) resonators in an acoustically resonant membrane. Optimization of the several key structural parameters is investigated to achieve the mode-field distributions of transmission spectrum based on Comsol Multiphysics software. Our numerical studies show that the proposed ultrasonic sensor offers higher sensitivity and a…
A micro-ring-resonator (MRR) optical biosensor based on the evanescent field sensing mechanism has been extensively studied due to its high sensitivity and compact device size. However, a suitable on-chip integrated spectrometer device has to be demonstrated for the lab-on-a-chip applications, which can read the resonance wavelength shift from MRR biosensors based on minuscule changes in refractive index. In this paper, we demonstrated the design and experimental results of the near-infrared lab-on-a-chip optical biosensor platform that monolithically integrates the MRR and the on-chip spectro…
We report enhanced nonlinear optics in complementary metal oxide semiconductor compatible photonic platforms through the use of layered two dimensional (2D) graphene oxide (GO) films. We integrate GO films with silicon on insulator nanowires (SOI), high index doped silica glass (Hydex) and silicon nitride (SiN) waveguides and ring resonators, to demonstrate an enhanced optical nonlinearity including Kerr nonlinearity and four wave mixing (FWM). The GO films are integrated using a large area, transfer free, layer by layer method while the film placement and size are controlled by photolithograp…
