Context. The intrinsic TeV emission of some BL Lacs are characterized by a hard spectrum (the hard-TeV spectrum) after correcting for the extragalactic background light. The hard-TeV spectra pose a challenge to conventional one-zone models, including the leptonic model, the photohadronic model, the proton synchrotron model, etc.
Aims. In this work, we study if the one-zone hadronuclear (pp) model can be used to interpret the hard-TeV spectra of BL Lacs without introducing extreme parameters.
Methods. We give analytical calculations to study if there is a parameter space and the charge neutrality condition of jet can be satisfied when interpreting the hard-TeV spectra of BL Lacs without introducing a super-Eddington jet power.
Results. We find that in a sample of hard-TeV BL Lacs collected by Xue et al. (2019a), only the hard-TeV spectrum of 1ES 0229+200 could be explained by gamma-ray from pi-0 decay produced in the pp interactions, but at the cost of setting a small radius of the radiation region that comparable to the Schwarzschild radius of the central black hole. Combining with previous studies of other one-zone models, we suggest that the hard-TeV spectra of BL Lacs cannot be explained by any one-zone models without introducing extreme parameters, and should originate from the multiple radiation regions.
In the study of radiation mechanisms of AGNs' jets, hadronuclear (pp) interactions are commonly neglected, because the number density of cold protons in the jet is considered insufficient. Very recently, our previous work proves that pp interactions in the low TeV luminosity AGNs, which have potential to generate detectable very-high-energy (VHE) emission, could be important. Based on this, the one-zone pp model is employed to study low-state quasi-simultaneous spectral energy distributions of a sample of low TeV luminosity AGNs in this work. Our modeling results show that the gamma-ray genera…
The emission of the so-called extreme BL Lacs poses challenges to the particle acceleration models. The hardness of their spectrum, $\lesssim 2$, in the high-energy band demands unusual parameters using the standard one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model with a deficient magnetized plasma. Some authors use either two-zone or hadronic/lepto-hadronic models to relax these atypical values. In this work, we present a lepto-hadronic two-zone model to explain the multi-wavelength observations of the six best-known \textit{extreme} BL Lacs. The very-high-energy gamma-ray observations are descr…
In the third catalog of active galactic nuclei detected by the $Fermi$ Large Area Telescope Clean (3LAC) sample, there are 402 blazars candidates of uncertain type (BCU). The proposed analysis will help to evaluate the potential optical classification flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) versus BL Lacertae (BL Lacs) objects of BCUs, which can help to understand which is the most elusive class of blazar hidden in the Fermi sample. By studying the 3LAC sample, we found some critical values of $γ$-ray photon spectral index ($Γ_{\rm ph}$), variability index (VI) and radio flux (${\rm F_R}$) of the …
The emission of the so-called extreme blazars challenges the particle acceleration models. The hardness of its spectrum, $<2$, demands extreme parameters using the standard one-zone SSC model in the high energy band. Some authors use both two-zone or hadronic/leptohadronic models to relax these extreme values. In this work, we present a leptohadronic two-zone model with external radiation fields to explain the broadband emission, where the contribution of two components forms the hard-spectrum in the $γ$-rays band. The first is produced by the photopion process, where accelerated protons in an…
The one-zone synchrotron-self-Compton (SSC) model aims to describe the spectral energy distribution (SED) of BL Lac objects via synchrotron emission by a non-thermal population of electrons and positrons in a single homogeneous emission region, partially upscattered to gamma-rays by the particles themselves. The model is usually considered as degenerate, given that the number of free parameters is higher than the number of observables. It is thus common to model the SED by choosing a single set of values for the SSC-model parameters that provide a good description of the data, without studying…
Relativistic jets launched by supermassive black holes, so-called as active galactic nuclei (AGNs), are known as the most energetic particle accelerators in the universe. However, the baryon loading efficiency onto the jets from the accretion flows and their particle acceleration efficiencies have been veiled in mystery. With the latest data sets, we perform multi-wavelength spectral analysis of quiescent spectra of 13 TeV gamma-ray detected high-frequency-peaked BL Lacs (HBLs) following one-zone static synchrotron-self-Compton (SSC) model. We determine the minimum, cooling break, and maximum …
Hard-TeV BL Lacs are a new type of blazars characterized by a hard intrinsic TeV spectrum, locating the peak of their gamma-ray emission in the spectral energy distribution (SED) above 2-10 TeV. Such high energies are problematic for the Compton emission, using a standard one-zone leptonic model. We study six examples of this new type of BL Lacs in the hard X-ray band with the NuSTAR satellite. Together with simultaneous observations with the SWIFT satellite, we fully constrain the peak of the synchrotron emission in their SED, and test the leptonic synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model. We con…
Very high energy (VHE; $E \geq$ 100GeV) $γ-$ray from cosmological distances are attenuated by the extragalactic background light (EBL) in the IR to UV band. By contrasting measured versus intrinsic emission, the EBL photon density can be derived. However, neither the intrinsic spectra nor the EBL is separately known~-~except their combined effect. Here we first present a flexible model-dependent optical depth method to study EBL by fitting the emission spectra of TeV BL Lacs objects via a one-zone leptonic synchrotron self-Compton model (SSC). We have little information about electron energy d…
Mildly-relativistic shocks that are embedded in colliding magnetohydrodynamic flows are prime sites for relativistic particle acceleration and production of strongly variable, polarized multi-wavelength emission from relativistic jet sources such as blazars and gamma-ray bursts. The principal energization mechanisms at these shocks are diffusive shock acceleration and shock drift acceleration. In recent work, we had self-consistently coupled shock acceleration and radiation transfer simulations in blazar jets in a basic one-zone scenario. These one-zone models revealed that the observed spectr…
A one-parameter two-zone leptonic model for the blazar sequence

The spectral energy distribution (SED) of blazars is generally understood through the standard one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model, where a strong correlation between X-ray and TeV gamma-ray fluxes is expected. Recently, for Mrk 421 the correlation was confirmed and interpreted within the SSC model arguing that a description of the correlation up to large flux values considerably restricts the value of the magnetic field under the assumption of an electron spectral index independent of the flux state. In this work, we extend the analysis done on Mrk 421 for other two high-energy peak…
We study the requirement on the jet power in the conventional p-$γ$ models (photopion production and Bethe-Heitler pair production) for TeV BL Lac objects. We select a sample of TeV BL Lac objects whose SEDs are difficult to be explained by the one-zone leptonic model. Based on the relation between the p-$γ$ interaction efficiency and the opacity of $γγ$ absorption, we find that the detection of TeV emission poses upper limits on the p-$γ$ interaction efficiencies in these sources and hence minimum jet powers can be derived accordingly. We find that the obtained minimum jet powers exceed the E…
Blazars have been pointed out as promising high-energy (HE) neutrinos sources, although the mechanism is still under debate. The blazars with a hard-TeV spectrum, which leptonic models can hardly explain, can be successfully interpreted in the hadronic scenarios. Recently, Aguilar et al. proposed a lepto-hadronic two-zone model to explain the multi-wavelength observations of the six best-known extreme BL Lacs and showed that the hadronic component could mainly interpret very-high-energy (VHE) emission. In this work, we apply this hadronic model to describe the VHE gamma-ray fluxes of 14 extrem…
The high-energy-peaked BL Lac H 2356-309 (z=0.165) was detected by HESS at very high energies (VHE, >100 GeV) with relatively high significance in the years 2004-2007, allowing a good determination of its gamma-ray spectrum. After correction for the interaction with the diffuse extragalactic background light (EBL), the VHE spectrum is flat (Gamma~1.9-2) over a decade in energy, locating the gamma-ray peak around or above 0.6-1 TeV. This is remarkably at odds with the interpretation and modeling provided by HESS, which do not correspond to the source properties and can be excluded with high con…
Theoretical modelling and observations of AGN jets suggest that the non-thermal electrons emitting the observed radiation should (i) carry an amount of energy comparable to the magnetic fields ($U_e\sim U_B$), which is likely the case if the magnetic fields play a dynamically important role in the jet's acceleration process; (ii) cool efficiently in a dynamical time ($t_{\rm cool}\lesssim t_{\rm dyn}$), which is suggested by the fact that a large fraction of the jet's kinetic energy is promptly converted into radiation. These expectations are at odds with the results of the simplest one-zone S…
At high luminosities black hole binaries show spectra with a strong disc component accompanied by an equally strong tail where at least some of the electrons are non-thermal. We reanalyze the simultaneous ASCA-RXTE-OSSE data from the 1998 outburst of XTE J1550-564, which span 0.7-1000 keV and remain the best data available of a black hole binary in this state. We reassess the importance of electron-positron pair production using a realistically high value of the source compactness for the first time. The lack of an observable annihilation line together with the observed gamma-ray flux beyond 5…
Electrons are accelerated at the shock wave diffuse and advect outward, and subsequently drift away into the emitting region of the jet that is located in the downstream flow from the plane shock. The current work considers the acceleration of the electrons in the shock front. Assuming a proper boundary condition at the interface between the shock and the downstream zones, a novel particle distribution in the downstream flow is proposed in this work to reproduce the broadband spectral energy distribution of BL Lac objects. We find that (1) we can obtain the particle distribution downstream of …
The origin of the high-energy neutrinos (0.1$-$1 PeV range) detected by IceCube remains a mystery. In this work we explore the possibility that efficient neutrino production can occur in structured jets of BL Lac objects, characterized by a fast inner spine surrounded by a slower layer. This scenario has been widely discussed in the framework of the high-energy emission models for BL Lacs and radiogalaxies. One of the relevant consequences of a velocity structure is the enhancement of the inverse Compton emission caused by the radiative coupling of the two zones. We show that a similar boostin…
We reconsider the emission properties of the BL Lac objects emitting in the high-energy gamma-ray band exploiting the new information in the MeV-GeV band obtained by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope in its first three months of operation. To this aim we construct the spectral energy distribution of all the BL Lacs revealed by LAT and of the known TeV BL Lacs not detected by LAT, also including data from the Swift satellite, and model them with a simple one-zone leptonic model. The analysis shows that the BL Lacs detected by LAT (being or not already de…
Pictor A is a nearby Fanaroff-Riley class II (FR II) radio galaxy with a bright hot spot, the western hot spot. Observation of high polarization in the optical emission of the hot spot indicates that the optical emission could be synchrotron radiation of relativistic electrons in the hot spot. These electrons may be able to produce high energy gamma-ray photons through inverse Compton (IC) scattering. We use single-zone and multi-zone synchrotron + synchrotron-self-Compton (SSC) models to fit the observed spectral energy distribution (SED) from the radio to the X-ray band of the hot spot. Our …
We investigate the physical properties of BL Lac objects (BL Lacs) jets by modeling the quasi-simultaneous spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 22 {\it Fermi} BL Lac objects in the frame of a simple one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model. We obtained the best-fit model parameters and their uncertainties for each BL Lac object through the $χ^2$-minimization procedure and discussed their implications on the physical processes. The modeling results show that the one-zone SSC model can successfully fit the SEDs of high-synchrotron-peaked BL Lacs (HBLs) and intermediate-synchrotron-peaked…
High energy observations of extreme BL Lac objects, such as 1ES 0229+200 or 1ES 0347-121, recently focused interest both for blazar and jet physics and for the implication on the extragalactic background light and intergalactic magnetic field estimate. However, the number of these extreme highly peaked BL Lac objects (EHBL) is still rather small. Aiming at increase their number, we selected a group of EHBL candidates starting from the BL Lac sample of Plotkin et al. (2011), considering those undetected (or only barely detected) by the Large Area Telescope onboard Fermi and characterized by a h…
For the first time, Kataoka \& Stawarz reported a clear detection of a hard X-ray excess, above $\gtrsim$20 keV, in the high-synchrotron-peaked BL Lac object Mrk 421. We find that this feature may not be produced by the low-energy part of the same electron population that produced the Fermi/LAT $γ$-ray. Because of that it is required that the power-law electron energy go down to $γ_{\rm min}\approx19$, which predicts a very strong radio emission (radio flux larger than the observed) even considering the synchrotron self-absorption effect. We investigate the possibility of this excess being pro…
High-energy observations of extreme BL Lac objects, such as 1ES0229+200 or 1ES 0347-121, recently focused interest both for blazar and jet physics and for the implication on the extragalactic background light and intergalactic magnetic field estimate. Moreover, their enigmatic properties have been interpreted in a scenario in which their primary high- energy output is through a beam of high-energy hadrons. However, despite their possible important role in all these topics, the number of these extreme highly peaked BL Lac objects (EHBL) is still rather small. Aiming at increase their number, we…
The recent IceCube discovery of 0.1-1 PeV neutrinos of astrophysical origin opens up a new era for high-energy astrophysics. Although there are various astrophysical candidate sources, a firm association of the detected neutrinos with one (or more) of them is still lacking. A recent analysis of plausible astrophysical counterparts within the error circles of IceCube events showed that likely counterparts for nine of the IceCube neutrinos include mostly BL Lacs, among which Mrk 421. Motivated by this result and a previous independent analysis on the neutrino emission from Mrk 421, we test the B…
Particle acceleration signatures in the time-dependent one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model of blazar flares

We report on our optical monitoring of the BL Lac object S5 1803+78 from 1996 to 2011. The source showed no clear periodicity, but a time scale of about 1300 days between major flares is possibly present. No systematic trend of the color index with flux variations is evident, at variance with other BL Lacs. In one flare, however, the source was bluer in the rising phase and redder in the falling one. Two Gamma-ray flares were detected by Fermi-GST during our monitoring: on the occasion of only one of them we found simultaneous optical brightening. A one-zone Synchrotron Self Compton (SSC) mode…
We present results of multi-wavelength (MWL) observations of the high-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae (HBL) object 1ES 0806+524 (z=0.138). Triggered by a high optical state, very high energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) observations were carried out with the MAGIC stereoscopic system from January to March 2011. During the observations a relatively short VHE gamma-ray flare was detected that lasted no longer than one night. To complement the VHE observations, simultaneous MWL data were collected in high energy gamma-rays using the \textit{Fermi Large Area Telescope (HE, 300 MeV - 100 GeV), in the X-ray and …
The current paradigm foresees that relativistic jets are launched as magnetically dominated flows, whose magnetic power is progressively converted to kinetic power of of the matter of the jet, until equipartition is reached. Therefore, at the end of the acceleration phase, the jet should still carry a substantial fraction ($\approx$ half) of its power in the form of a Poynting flux. It has been also argued that, in these conditions, the best candidate particle acceleration mechanism is efficient reconnection of magnetic field lines, for which it is predicted that magnetic field and accelerated…
We explain the observed multiwavelength photon spectrum of a number of BL Lac objects detected at very high energy (VHE, $E \gtrsim 30$ GeV), using a lepto-hadronic emission model. The one-zone leptonic emission is employed to fit the synchrotron peak. Subsequently, the SSC spectrum is calculated, such that it extends up to the highest energy possible for the jet parameters considered. The data points beyond this energy, and also in the entire VHE range are well explained using a hadronic emission model. The ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs, $E\gtrsim 0.1$ EeV) escaping from the source int…
We fit the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 46 GeV - TeV BL Lac objects in the frame of leptonic one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model and investigate the physical properties of these objects. We use the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method to obtain the basic parameters, such as magnetic field (B), the break energy of the relativistic electron distribution ($γ'_{\rm{b}}$) and the electron energy spectral index. Based on the modeling results, we support the following scenarios on GeV-TeV BL Lac objects: (1) Some sources have large Doppler factors, implying other radiation mech…
We present a model-dependent method to estimate the redshifts of three TeV BL Lac objects (BL Lacs) through fltting their (quasi-) simultaneous multi-waveband spectral energy distributions (SEDs) by one-zone leptonic synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model. Considering the impact of electron energy distributions (EEDs) on the results, we use three types of EEDs, such as the power-law EED with exponential cut-ofi (PLC), the log-parabola (PLLP) and the broken power-law (BPL) EEDs, to flt the SEDs. We also use a parameter fi to describe the uncertainties of the extragalactic background light (EBL) m…
BL Lacertae is the prototype of the blazar subclass known as BL Lac type objects. BL Lacertae object itself is a low-frequency-peaked BL Lac(LBL). Very high energy (VHE) gamma ray emission from this source was discovered in 2005 by MAGIC observatory while the source was at a flaring state. Since then, VHE gamma rays from this source has been detected several times. However, all of those times the source was in a high activity state. Former studies suggest several non-thermal zones emitting in gamma-rays, then gamma-ray flare should be composed of a convolution. Observing the BL Lacertae object…
Current Cherenkov telescopes have identified a population of ultra-high-frequency peaked BL Lac objects (UHBLs), also known as extreme blazars, that exhibit exceptionally hard TeV spectra, including 1ES 0229+200, 1ES 0347-121, RGB J0710+591, 1ES 1101-232, and 1ES 1218+304. Although one-zone synchrotron-self-Compton (SSC) models have been generally successful in interpreting the high-energy emission observed in other BL Lac objects, they are problematic for UHBLs, necessitating very large Doppler factors and/or extremely high minimum Lorentz factors of the emitting leptonic population. In this …
Polarized radiation from blazars is one key piece of evidence for synchrotron radiation at low energy, which also shows variations. We present here our results on the correlation analysis between optical flux and polarization degree (PD) variations in a sample of 11 BL Lac objects using $\sim$ 10 years of data from the Steward Observatory. We carried out the analysis on long-term ($\sim$ several months) as well as on short-term timescales ($\sim$ several days). On long-term timescales, for about 85% of the observing cycles, we found no correlation between optical flux and PD. On short-term tim…
We compare the variability properties of very high energy gamma-ray emitting BL Lac objects in the optical and radio bands. We use the variability information to distinguish multiple emission components in the jet, to be used as a guidance for spectral energy distribution modelling. Our sample includes 32 objects in the Northern sky that have data for at least 2 years in both bands. We use optical R-band data from the Tuorla blazar monitoring program and 15 GHz radio data from the Owens Valley Radio Observatory blazer monitoring program. We estimate the variability amplitudes using the intrins…
The synchrotron-self Compton (SSC) radiation process is widely held to provide a close representation of the double peaked spectral energy distributions from BL Lac Objects (BL Lacs), which are marked by non-thermal beamed radiations, highly variable on timescales of days or less. Their outbursts in the gamma ray relative to the optical/X rays might be surmised to be enhanced in BL Lacs as these photons are upscattered via the inverse Compton (IC) process. From the observed correlations among the spectral parameters during optical/X-ray variations we aim at predicting corresponding correlation…
