Polarized radiation from blazars is one key piece of evidence for synchrotron radiation at low energy, which also shows variations. We present here our results on the correlation analysis between optical flux and polarization degree (PD) variations in a sample of 11 BL Lac objects using $\sim$ 10 years of data from the Steward Observatory. We carried out the analysis on long-term ($\sim$ several months) as well as on short-term timescales ($\sim$ several days). On long-term timescales, for about 85% of the observing cycles, we found no correlation between optical flux and PD. On short-term timescales, we found a total of 58 epochs with a significant correlation between optical flux and PD, where both positive and negative correlation were observed. In addition, we also found a significant correlation between optical flux and $γ$-ray flux variations on long-term timescales in 11% of the observing cycles. The observed PD variations in our study cannot be explained by changes in the power-law spectral index of the relativistic electrons in the jets. The shock-in-jet scenario is favoured for the correlation between optical flux and PD, whereas the anti-correlation can be explained by the presence of multi-zone emission regions. The varying correlated behaviour can also be explained by the enhanced optical flux caused by the newly developed radio knots in the jets and their magnetic field alignment with the large scale jet magnetic field.
Quasi-simultaneous Optical Flux and Polarization Variability of the Binary Super Massive Black Hole Blazar OJ 287 from 2015 to 2023: Detection of an Anticorrelation in Flux and Polarization Variability
Study of the polarization behaviour in blazars is a powerful tool to discern the role of magnetic field in the variable emission process in their relativistic jets. We present here results of our systematic investigation on the correlation between optical flux and polarization variations for eight flat-spectrum radio quasars on various timescales using data from the Steward Observatory that covers a period of $\sim$10 years. On long time scales ($\sim$several months), from a total of 79 observing cycles, in 34 observing cycles, we found a significant positive correlation between optical flux a…
Relativistic magnetic reconnection is a potential particle acceleration mechanism for high-frequency BL Lacs (HBLs). The {\it Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer} ({\it IXPE}) scheduled to launch in 2021 has the capability to probe the magnetic field evolution in HBLs, examining the magnetic reconnection scenario for the HBL flares. In this paper, we make the first attempt to self-consistently predict HBL X-ray polarization signatures arising from relativistic magnetic reconnection via combined particle-in-cell (PIC) and polarized radiation transfer simulations. We find that although the intrin…
Photopolarimetric Monitoring of Blazars in the Optical and Near-Infrared Bands with the Kanata Telescope. I. Correlations between Flux, Color, and Polarization
Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are extragalactic radio transients with millisecond duration and extremely high brightness temperature. Very recently, some highly circularly polarized bursts were found in a repeater, FRB 20201124A. The significant circular polarization might be produced by coherent curvature radiation by bunches with the line of sight (LOS) deviating from the bunch central trajectories. In this work, we carry out simulations to study the statistical properties of burst polarization within the framework of coherent curvature radiation by charged bunches in the neutron star magnetosphe…

Due to the first results on astrophysical X-ray polarization provided by \textit{IXPE} observatory, the interest in wavelength-dependent synchrotron polarization of BL Lac type objects increases. This paper presents the results of multi-band optical observations of the well-known blazar named BL Lac ($z=0.069$) in polarized light. It was shown that the object's emission, regardless of its phase of activity, is characterized by the intraday variability of brightness and polarization with changes occurring on a time-scale of up to 1.5 hours without any stable oscillation period. Polarimetric obs…
For testing different electron temperature ($T_{\rm e}$) prescriptions in general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (GRMHD) simulations through observations, we propose to utilize linear polarization (LP) and circular polarization (CP) images. We calculate the polarization images based on a semi-Magnetically Arrested Disk (MAD) GRMHD model for various $T_{\rm e}$ parameters, bearing M87 in mind. We find an LP-CP separation in the images of the low-$T_{\rm e}$ disk cases at 230 GHz; namely, the LP flux mainly originates from downstream of the jet and the CP flux comes from the counter-side jet,…

Particle acceleration mechanisms in supermassive black hole jets, such as shock acceleration, magnetic reconnection, and turbulence, are expected to have observable signatures in the multi-wavelength polarization properties of blazars. The recent launch of the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) enables us, for the first time, to use polarization in the X-ray band (2-8 keV) to probe the properties of the jet synchrotron emission in high-frequency-peaked BL Lac objects (HSPs). We report the discovery of X-ray linear polarization (degree $Π_{\rm x}=15\pm$2\% and electric-vector position an…

Polarimetric measurements, especially if extended at high energy, are expected to provide important insights into the mechanisms underlying the acceleration of relativistic particles in jets. In a previous work we have shown that the polarization of the synchrotron X-ray emission produced by highly energetic electrons accelerated by a mildly relativistic shock carries essential imprints of the geometry and the structure of the magnetic fields in the downstream region. Here we present the extension of our analysis to the non-stationary case, especially suitable to model the highly variable emis…
BL Lacertae had undergone a series of historical high flux activity over a year, from August 2020 in the optical to VHE $γ$-rays. In this paper, we report on optical flux and spectral variability of the first historical maxima outburst event during October-November in g, r and i bands with the 1.26m telescope at Xinglong observatory, China. We detected significant intranight variations with amplitude rising up to $\sim 30$%, when the fastest variability timescale is found to be a few tens of minutes, giving an emitting region size of the order $10^{-3}$ pc, which corresponds to $\sim 100$ Schw…

We have obtained simultaneous and continuous photo-polarization observations of the blazar BL Lacertae in optical and near-infrared (NIR) bands during a historical outburst from 2020 to 2021. In total, fourteen nights of observations were performed where ten observations show microvariability on timescales of a few minutes to several hours. This suggests a compact emission region, and the timescales are difficult to explain by a one-zone shock-in-jet model. Moreover, we found significant differences in the polarization degree (PD) and angle between optical and NIR bands. Nine nights showed a P…
We here report a monitor of the BL Lac object 1ES 1218+304 in both B- and R-bands by the GWAC-F60A telescope in eight nights, when it was triggerd to be at its highest X-ray flux in history by the VERITAS Observatory and Swift follow-ups. Both ANOVA and $χ^2$-test enable us to clearly reveal an intra-day variability in optical wavelengths in seven out of the eight nights. A bluer-when-brighter chromatic relationship has been clearly identified in five out of the eight nights, which can be well explained by the shock-in-jet model. In addtion, a quasi-periodic oscilation phenomenon in both bands…
