We study the sensitivity of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer that contains in addition to the phase shifter a non-linear element. By including both elements in a cavity or a loop that the light transverses many times, a non-linear kicked version of the interferometer arises. We study its sensitivity as function of the phase shift, the kicking strength, the maximally reached average number of photons, and damping due to photon loss for an initial coherent state. We find that for vanishing damping Heisenberg-limited scaling of the sensitivity arises if squeezing dominates the total photon number. For small to moderate damping rates the non-linear kicks can considerably increase the sensitivity as measured by the quantum Fisher information per unit time.
We present experimental and theoretical results on a new interferometer topology that nests a SU(2) interferometer, e.g., a Mach-Zehnder or Michelson interferometer, inside a SU(1,1) interferometer, i.e., a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with parametric amplifiers in place of beam splitters. This SU(2)-in-SU(1,1) nested interferometer (SISNI) simultaneously achieves high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), sensitivity beyond the standard quantum limit (SQL) and tolerance to photon losses external to the interferometer, e.g., in detectors. We implement a SISNI using parametric amplification by four-wave …
It is well-known that the precision of a phase measurement with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer employing strong (macroscopic) classic light can be greatly enhanced with the addition of a weak (microscopic) light field in a non-classical state. The resulting precision is much greater than that possible with either the macroscopic classical or microscopic quantum states alone. In the context of quantifying non-classicality, the amount by which a non-classical state can enhance precision in this way has been termed its "metrological power". Given the technological difficulty of producing high-ampl…
We study the sensitivity and resolution of phase measurement in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with two-mode squeezed vacuum (<n> photons on average). We show that super-resolution and sub-Heisenberg sensitivity is obtained with parity detection. In particular, in our setup, dependence of the signal on the phase evolves <n> times faster than in traditional schemes, and uncertainty in the phase estimation is better than 1/<n>.
We find a phase matching condition for enhancement of sensitivity in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer illuminated by an arbitrary state in one input port and an odd(even) state in the other port. Under this condition, the Fisher information becomes maximal with respect to the relative phase of two modes and the phase sensitivity is enhanced. For the case with photon losses, we further find that the phase matching condition keeps unchanged with a coherent state and a coherent superposition state as the input states.
We propose a class of path-entangled photon Fock states for robust quantum optical metrology, imaging, and sensing in the presence of loss. We model propagation loss with beam-splitters and derive a reduced density matrix formalism from which we examine how photon loss affects coherence. It is shown that particular entangled number states, which contain a special superposition of photons in both arms of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, are resilient to environmental decoherence. We demonstrate an order of magnitude greater visibility with loss, than possible with N00N states. We also show that t…
By considering matter wave bright solitons from weakly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in a double-well potential, we study the formation of macroscopic non-classical states, including Schrödinger-cat superposition states and maximally path entangled $N00N$-states. With these macroscopic states, we examine Mach-Zehnder interferometer in the context of parity measurements, in order to obtain Heisenberg limit accuracy for linear phase shift measurement. We reveal that the ratio between two-body scattering length and intra-well hopping parameter can be measured with the scaling beyond t…
We present a method of directly obtaining the parity of a Gaussian state of light without recourse to photon-number counting. The scheme uses only a simple balanced homodyne technique, and intensity correlation. Thus interferometric schemes utilizing coherent or squeezed light, and parity detection may be practically implemented for an arbitrary photon flux. Specifically we investigate a two-mode, squeezed-light, Mach-Zehnder interferometer and show how the parity of the output state may be obtained. We also show that the detection may be described independent of the parity operator, and that …
We consider Zero Noise Extrapolation (ZNE) as an error mitigation strategy in quantum metrology. It is shown that noise expansion can be systematically performed over sufficiently short time scales for general Markovian noise models described by the time homogeneous Lindblad master equation. This suggests that ZNE can be an effective, resource efficient error mitigation alternative when strategies employing full quantum error correcting codes are unavailable. The ZNE method is then applied quantum phase estimation in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer subject to photon losses. Numerical simulations…
Probabilistic amplification through photon addition, at the output of an Mach-Zehnder interferometer is discussed for a coherent input state. When a metric of signal to noise ratio is considered, nondeterministic, noiseless amplification of a coherent state shows improvement over a standard coherent state, for the general addition of $m$ photons. The efficiency of realizable implementation of photon addition is also considered and shows how the collected statistics of a post selected state, depend on this efficiency. We also consider the effects of photon loss and inefficient detectors.
Quantum metrology employs quantum effects to attain a measurement precision surpassing the limit achievable in classical physics. However, it was previously found that the precision returns the shot-noise limit (SNL) from the ideal Zeno limit (ZL) due to the photon loss in quantum metrology based on Mech-Zehnder interferometer. Here, we find that not only the SNL can be beaten, but also the ZL can be asymptotically recovered in long-encoding-time condition when the photon dissipation is exactly studied in its inherent non-Markovian manner. Our analysis reveals that it is due to the formation o…

The Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) effect is analyzed for photons in a modified Mach-Zehnder setup with two particles experiencing different gravitational potentials, which are later recombined using a beam-splitter. It is found that the HOM effect depends directly on the relativistic time dilation between the arms of the setup. This temporal dilation can be used to estimate the $γ$ and $β$ parameters of the parameterized post-Newtonian formalism. The uncertainty in the parameters $γ$ and $β$ are of the order $ 10^{-8}-10^{-12}$, depending on the quantum state employed.
In the lore of quantum metrology, one often hears (or reads) the following no-go theorem: If you put vacuum into one input port of a balanced Mach-Zehnder Interferometer, then no matter what you put into the other input port, and no matter what your detection scheme, the sensitivity can never be better than the shot noise limit (SNL). Often the proof of this theorem is cited to be in Ref. [C. Caves, Phys. Rev. D 23, 1693 (1981)], but upon further inspection, no such claim is made there. A quantum-Fisher-information-based argument suggestive of this no-go theorem appears in Ref. [M. Lang and C.…
Quantum metrology is the state-of-the-art measurement technology. It uses quantum resources to enhance the sensitivity of phase estimation beyond what reachable within classical physics. While single parameter estimation theory has been widely investigated, much less is known about the simultaneous estimation of multiple phases, which finds key applications in imaging and sensing. In this manuscript we provide conditions of useful entanglement (among multimode particles, qudits) for multiphase estimation and adapt them to multiarm Mach-Zehnder interferometry. We discuss benchmark multimode Foc…
Quantum metrology utilizes nonclassical states to improve the precision of measurement devices. In this context, strongly squeezed vacuum states of light have proven to be a useful resource. They are typically produced by spontaneous parametric down-conversion, but have not been generated at shorter wavelengths so far, as suitable nonlinear materials do not exist. Here, we report on the generation of strongly squeezed vacuum states at 532 nm with 5.5 dB noise suppression by means of frequency up-conversion from the telecommunication wavelength of 1550 nm. The up-converted states are employed i…
Particle-wave duality enables the construction of interferometers for matter waves, which complement optical interferometers in precision measurement devices. This requires the development of atom-optics analogs to beam splitters, phase shifters, and recombiners. Integrating these elements into a single device has been a long-standing goal. Here we demonstrate a full Mach-Zehnder sequence with trapped Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) confined on an atom chip. Particle interactions in our BEC matter waves lead to a non-linearity, absent in photon optics. We exploit it to generate a non-classica…

We study the sensitivity of phase estimation in a lossy Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) using two general, and practical, resources generated by a laser and a nonlinear optical medium with passive optimal elements, which are readily available in the laboratory: One is a two-mode separable coherent and squeezed vacuum state at a beam splitter and the other is a two-mode squeezed vacuum state. In view of the ultimate precision given by quantum Fisher information, we show that the two-mode squeezed vacuum state can achieve a lower bound of estimation error than the coherent and squeezed vacuum …
The number of times that we can access a system to extract information via quantum metrology is always finite, and possibly small, and realistic amounts of prior knowledge tend to be moderate. Thus theoretical consistency demands a methodology that departs from asymptotic approximations and restricted parameter locations, while practical convenience requires that it is also flexible and easy to use in applications with limited data. We submit that this methodology can and should be built on a Bayesian framework, and in this thesis we propose, construct, explore and exploit a new non-asymptotic…
Quantum metrology protocols are typically designed around the assumption that we have an abundance of measurement data, but recent practical applications are increasingly driving interest in cases with very limited data. In this regime the best approach involves an interesting interplay between the amount of data and the prior information. Here we propose a new way of optimising these schemes based on the practically-motivated assumption that we have a sequence of identical and independent measurements. For a given probe state we take our measurement to be the best one for a single shot and we…
The nonclassical properties of quantum states are of tremendous interest due to their potential applications in future technologies. It has recently been realized that the concept of a "resource theory" is a powerful approach to quantifying and understanding nonclassicality. To realize the potential of this approach one must first find resource theoretic measures of nonclassicality that are "operational", meaning that they also quantify the ability of quantum states to provide enhanced performance for specific tasks, such as precision sensing. Here we achieve a significant milestone in this en…
A surprising feature of the Kerr metric is the anisotropy of the speed of light. The angular momentum of a rotating massive object causes co- and counter-propagating light paths to move at faster and slower velocities, respectively as determined by a far-away clock. Based on this effect we derive ultimate quantum limits for the measurement of the Kerr rotation parameter $a$ using a interferometric set up. As a possible implementation, we propose a Mach-Zehnder interferometer to measure the "one-way height differential" time effect. We isolate the effect by calibrating to a dark port and rotati…
In an idealistic setting, quantum metrology protocols allow to sense physical parameters with mean squared error that scales as $1/N^2$ with the number of particles involved---substantially surpassing the $1/N$-scaling characteristic to classical statistics. A natural question arises, whether such an impressive enhancement persists when one takes into account the decoherence effects that are unavoidable in any real-life implementation. In this thesis, we resolve a major part of this issue by describing general techniques that allow to quantify the attainable precision in metrological schemes i…
Which-path information of a quantum particle in interferometers is the key to infer the past of quantum particle. It arises many extensive discussions including quantum complementarity and path-visibility relation. The basic of these discussions are the description, detection and control of which-path information. In this article, we focus on the investigation of multidimensional which-path information in nested Mach-Zehnder interferometer. A general expression of which-path information is given and can be partially extracted by different detection method. Further analysis shows that the which…
In quantum mechanics, photonic de Broglie waves have been understood as a unique property of quantum mechanics satisfying the complementarity between particle and wave natures of light, where the photonic de Broglie wavelength is inversely proportional to the number of entangled photons acting on a beam splitter. Very recently, the heart of nonclassical feature of photon bunching on a beam splitter was newly interpreted using pure wave nature of coherence optics [arXiv:1911.07174v2], paving a road to unconditionally secured classical key distribution [arXiv:1807.04233v3]. Here, Mach-Zehnder in…
We study the classical and quantum Fisher information for the Lieb-Liniger model. The Fisher information has been studied extensively when the parameter is inscribed on a quantum state by a unitary process, e.g., Mach-Zehnder or Ramsey interferometry. Here, we investigate the case that a Hamiltonian parameter to be estimated is imprinted on eigenstates of that Hamiltonian, and thus is not necessarily encoded by a unitary operator. Taking advantage of the fact that the Lieb-Liniger model is exactly solvable, the Fisher information is determined for periodic and hard-wall boundary conditions, va…
The interferometer is one of the most important devices for revealing the nature of light and for precision optical metrology. Though lots of experiments were performed for probing photons behaviors in various configurations, a complete study of photons behavior in a birefringent interferometer has not ever been performed. Based on an environmental turbulence immune Mach-Zehnder interferometer, tunable photonic beatings by rotating a birefringent crystal versus the temperature of the crystal for both single-photon and two-photon are observed. Furthermore, the two-photon interference fringes be…
Narrow-band intensity-difference squeezing beams have important applications in quantum metrology and gravitational wave detection. The best way to generate narrow-band intensity-difference squeezing is to employ parametrically-amplified four-wave mixing process in high-gain atomic media. Such IDS can be further enhanced by cascading multiple parametrically-amplified four-wave mixing processes in separate atomic media. The complicated experimental setup, added losses and required high-power pump laser with the increase of number of stages can limit the wide uses of such scheme in practical app…
A new type of quantum entangled interferometer was recently realized that employs parametric amplifiers as the wave splitting and recombination elements. The quantum entanglement stems from the parametric amplifiers, which produce quantum correlated fields for probing the phase change signal in the interferometer. This type of quantum entangled interferometer exhibits some unique properties that are different from traditional beam splitter-based interferometers such as Mach-Zehnder interferometers. Because of these properties, it is superior to the traditional interferometers in many aspects, …

Quantum metrology overcomes standard precision limits by exploiting collective quantum superpositions of physical systems used for sensing, with the prominent example of non-classical multiphoton states improving interferometric techniques. Practical quantum-enhanced interferometry is, however, vulnerable to imperfections such as partial distinguishability of interfering photons. Here we introduce a method where appropriate design of the modal structure of input photons can alleviate deleterious effects caused by another, experimentally inaccessible degree of freedom. This result is accompanie…
NOON states (states of the form $|N>_{a}|0>_{b}+|0>_{a}|N>_{b}$ where $a$ and $b$ are single particle states) have been used for predicting violations of local realism (Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger violations) and are valuable in metrology for precision measurements of phase at the Heisenberg limit. We show theoretically how the use of two Fock state Bose-Einstein condensates as sources in a modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer can lead to the creation of the NOON state in which $a$ and $b$ refer to arms of the interferometer and $N$ is a subset of the total number of particles in the two conde…
We propose a theoretical scheme to improve the resolution and precision of phase measurement with parity detection in the Mach-Zehnder interferometer by using a nonclassical input state which is generated by applying a number-conserving generalized superposition of products (GSP) operation, (saa^{†}+ta^{†}a)^{m} with s^2+t^2=1, on two-mode squeezed vacuum (TMSV) state. The nonclassical properties of the proposed GSP-TMSV are investigated via average photon number (APN), anti-bunching effect, and degrees of two-mode squeezing. Particularly, our results show that both higher-order m GSP operatio…

A new generation of atomic sensors using ultra-narrow optical clock transitions and composite pulses are pushing quantum engineering control to a very high level of precision for applied and fundamental physics. Here, we propose a new version of Ramsey-Bordé interferometry introducing arbitrary composite laser pulses with tailored pulse duration, Rabi field, detuning and phase-steps. We explore quantum metrology below the $10^{-18}$ level of fractional accuracy by a fine tuning control of light excitation parameters protecting ultra-narrow optical clock transitions against residual light-shift…
Path-entangled N-photon states can be obtained through the coalescence of indistinguishable photons inside linear networks. They are key resources for quantum enhanced metrology, quantum imaging, as well as quantum computation based on quantum walks. However, the quantum tomography of path-entangled indistinguishable photons is still in its infancy as it requires multiple phase estimations increasing rapidly with N. Here, we propose and implement a method to measure the quantum tomography of path-entangled two-photon states. A two-photon state is generated through the Hong-Ou-Mandel interferen…
