We propose a theoretical scheme to improve the resolution and precision of phase measurement with parity detection in the Mach-Zehnder interferometer by using a nonclassical input state which is generated by applying a number-conserving generalized superposition of products (GSP) operation, (saa^{†}+ta^{†}a)^{m} with s^2+t^2=1, on two-mode squeezed vacuum (TMSV) state. The nonclassical properties of the proposed GSP-TMSV are investigated via average photon number (APN), anti-bunching effect, and degrees of two-mode squeezing. Particularly, our results show that both higher-order m GSP operation and smaller parameter s can increase the total APN, which leads to the improvement of quantum Fisher information. In addition, we also compare the phase measurement precision with and without photon losses between our scheme and the previous photon subtraction/addition schemes. It is found that our scheme, especially for the case of s=0, has the best performance via the enhanced phase resolution and sensitivity when comparing to those previous schemes even in the presence of photon losses. Interestingly, without losses, the standard quantum-noise limit (SQL) can always be surpassed in our our scheme and the Heisenberg limit (HL) can be even achieved when s=0.5,1 with small total APNs. However, in the presence of photon losses, the HL cannot be beaten, but the SQL can still be overcome particularly in the large total APN regimes. Our results here can find important applications in quantum metrology.
Majorana-based quantum computation seeks to encode information non-locally in pairs of Majorana zero modes, thereby isolating qubit states from a local noisy environment. In addition to long coherence times, the attractiveness of Majorana-based quantum computing relies on achieving topologically protected Clifford gates from braiding operations. Recent works have conjectured that mean-field BCS calculations may fail to account for non-universal corrections to the Majorana braiding operations. Such errors would be detrimental to Majorana-based topological quantum computing schemes. In this work…
We investigate the states generated in continuous variable (CV) optical fields on operating them with a number-conserving operator of the type $s\hat{a}\hat{a}^†+ t\hat{a}^†\hat{a}$, formed by the generalised superposition of products of field annihilation ($\hat{a}$) and creation ($\hat{a}^†$) operators, with $s^2+t^2=1$. Such an operator is experimentally realizable and can be suitably manipulated to generate nonclassical optical states when applied on single- and two-mode coherent, thermal, and squeezed input states. At low intensities, these nonclassical states can interact with a secondar…
The Gutzwiller variational wavefunction (GVW) is commonly employed to capture correlation effects in condensed matter systems such as ferromagnets, ultracold bosonic gases, correlated superconductors, etc. By noticing that the grand-canonical and number-conserving Gutzwiller Ansätze are in fact the zero-order approximation of an expansion in the truncation parameter of a Matrix Product State (MPS), we argue that MPSs, and the algorithms used to operate on them, are not only flexible computational tools but also a unifying theoretical framework that can be used to generalize and improve on the …
We show that the entanglement of a $2\times 2$ bipartite state can be improved and maximized probabilistically through single-qubit operations only. An experiment is proposed and it is numerically simulated.
We study the Braunstein-Kimble setup for teleportation of quantum state of a single mode of optical field. We assume that the sender and receiver share a two-mode Gaussian state and we identify optimum local Gaussian operations that maximize the teleportation fidelity. We consider fidelity of teleportation of pure Gaussian states and we also introduce fidelity of the teleportation transformation. We show on an explicit example that in some cases the optimum local operation is not a simple unitary symplectic transformation but some more general completely positive map.
We show that a beam splitter of reflectivity one-third can be used to realize a quantum phase gate operation if only the outputs conserving the number of photons on each side are post-selected.
Universal gate sets for quantum computing have been known for decades, yet no universal gate set has been proposed for particle-conserving unitaries, which are the operations of interest in quantum chemistry. In this work, we show that controlled single-excitation gates in the form of Givens rotations are universal for particle-conserving unitaries. Single-excitation gates describe an arbitrary $U(2)$ rotation on the two-qubit subspace spanned by the states $|01\rangle, |10\rangle$, while leaving other states unchanged -- a transformation that is analogous to a single-qubit rotation on a dual-…
A reliable method for characterizing quantum operations that is suitable for improving and validating their accuracies is indispensable for realizing a practical quantum computer. Known methods are still not sufficient because they lack reliability or are not suitable for use in the improvement and validation steps. Here we propose a reliable characterization method that is suitable for the accuracy validation step. First, we introduce a new self-consistent estimator with regularization and physicality constraints that are designed for improvement and validation. Second, we mathematically prov…
We study a continuous-variable (CV) teleportation protocol based on a shared entangled state produced by the quantum-nondemolition (QND) interaction of two vacuum states. The scheme utilizes the QND interaction or an unbalanced beam splitter in the Bell measurement. It is shown that in the non-unity gain regime the signal transfer coefficient can be enhanced while the conditional variance product remains preserved by applying appropriate local squeezing operation on sender's part of the shared entangled state. In the unity gain regime it is demonstrated that the fidelity of teleportation can b…
A new entangled quantum state is introduced by applying local coherent superposition (ra^+ +ta) of photon subtraction and addition to each mode of even entangled coherent state (EECS) and the properties of entanglement are investigated. It is found that the Shchukin-Vogel inseparability, the degree of entanglement and the average fidelity of quantum teleportation of the EECS can be improved due to the coherent superposition operation. The effects of improvement by coherent superposition operation are better than those by single (a^+) and two-photon (a^+ b^+) addition operations under a small r…
An explicit algorithm for calculating the optimized Euler angles for both qubit state transfer and gate engineering given two arbitary fixed Hamiltonians is presented. It is shown how the algorithm enables us to efficiently implement single qubit gates even if the control is severely restricted and the experimentally accessible Hamiltonians are far from orthogonal. It is further shown that using the optimized Euler angles can significantly improve the fidelity of quantum operations even for systems where the experimentally accessible Hamiltonians are nearly orthogonal. Unlike schemes such as c…
In this work we focus on evaluating the effectiveness of two non-Gaussian operations, photon subtraction (PS) and quantum scissors (QS) in terms of Continuous Variable (CV)-Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) over lossy channels. Each operation is analysed in two scenarios, one with the operation applied transmitter-side to a Two-Mode Squeezed Vacuum (TMSV) state and a second with the operation applied to the TMSV state receiver-side. We numerically evaluate the entanglement and calculate the QKD key rates produced in all four possible scenarios. Our results show that for a fixed value of initial s…
Two protocols of quantum direct communication with authentication [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 73}, 042305 (2006)] are recently proposed by Lee, Lim and Yang. In this paper we will show that in the two protocols the authenticator Trent should be prevented from knowing the secret message of communication. The first protocol can be eavesdropped by Trent using the the intercept-measure-resend attack, while the second protocol can be eavesdropped by Trent using single-qubit measurement. To fix these leaks, I revise the original versions of the protocols by using the Pauli-Z operation $σ_z$ instead of the or…
We show that one-body entanglement, which is a measure of the deviation of a pure fermionic state from a Slater determinant (SD) and is determined by the mixedness of the single-particle density matrix (SPDM), can be considered as a quantum resource. The associated theory has SDs and their convex hull as free states, and number conserving fermion linear optics operations (FLO), which include one-body unitary transformations and measurements of the occupancy of single-particle modes, as the basic free operations. We first provide a bipartitelike formulation of one-body entanglement, based on a …
We develop a generalized framework for constructing many-body-interaction operations either in linear time, or in logarithmic time with a linear number of ancilla qubits. Exact gate decompositions are given in particular for Pauli strings, many-control Toffoli gates, number-~and parity-conserving interactions, Unitary Coupled Cluster operations, and sparse matrix generators. We provide a linear time protocol that works by creating a superposition of exponentially many different possible operator strings and then uses dynamical decoupling methodology to undo all the unwanted terms. A logarithmi…
By using a laser and maser in tandem, it is possible to obtain laser action in the hot exhaust gases involved in heat engine operation. Such a "quantum afterburner" involves the internal quantum states of working gas atoms or molecules as well as the techniques of cavity quantum electrodynamics and is therefore in the domain of quantum thermodynamics. As an example, it is shown that Otto cycle engine performance can be improved beyond that of the "ideal" Otto heat engine.
Re-examination of the role of displacement and photon catalysis operation in continuous variable measurement device-independent quantum key distribution
We investigate entanglement concentration of continuous-variable Gaussian states by local single-photon subtractions combined with local Gaussian operations. We first analyze the local squeezing-enhanced entanglement concentration protocol proposed very recently by Zhang and van Loock [e-print: arXiv:1103.4500 (2011)] and discuss the mechanism by which local squeezing before photon subtraction helps to increase the entanglement of the output state of the protocol. We next show that a similar entanglement improvement can be achieved by using local coherent displacements instead of single-mode s…
We address the use of entanglement to improve the precision of generalized quantum interferometry, i.e. of binary measurements aimed to determine whether or not a perturbation has been applied by a given device. For the most relevant operations in quantum optics, we evaluate the optimal detection strategy and the ultimate bounds to the minimum detectable perturbation. Our results indicate that entanglement-assisted strategies improve the discrimination in comparison with conventional schemes. A concrete setup to approach performances of the optimal strategies is also suggested.
We have modelled the Zeno effect Control-Sign gate of Franson et al (PRA 70, 062302, 2004) and shown that high two-photon to one-photon absorption ratios, $κ$, are needed for high fidelity free standing operation. Hence we instead employ this gate for cluster state fusion, where the requirement for $κ$ is less restrictive. With the help of partially offline one-photon and two-photon distillations, we can achieve a fusion gate with unity fidelity but non-unit probability of success. We conclude that for $κ> 2200$, the Zeno fusion gate will out perform the equivalent linear optics gate.
We present a quantum communication protocol which keeps all the properties of the ping-pong protocol [Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 187902 (2002)] but improves the capacity doubly as the ping-pong protocol. Alice and Bob can use the variable measurement basises in control mode to detect Eve's eavesdropping attack. In message mode, Alice can use one unitary operations to encode two bits information. Bob only needs to perform a Bell type measurement to decode Alice's information. A classical message authentification method can protect this protocol against the eavesdropping hiding in the quantum channel …
In this study, the main focus is laid on the design of the optoelectronic quantum illumination system to enhance the system performance, such as operation at high temperature and confinement of the thermally excited photons. The optomechanical based quantum illumination system has wieldy been studied, and the results showed that operation at high temperature is so crucial to preserve the entanglement between modes. The main problem is that the mechanical part has to operate with a low frequency with which a large number of thermally excited photons are generated and worsened the entanglement. …
We discuss decoherence in charge qubits formed by multiple lateral quantum dots in the framework of the spin-boson model and the Born-Markov approximation. We consider the intrinsic decoherence caused by the coupling to bulk phonon modes. Two distinct quantum dot configurations are studied: (i) Three quantum dots in a ring geometry with one excess electron in total and (ii) arrays of quantum dots where the computational basis states form multipole charge configurations. For the three-dot qubit, we demonstrate the possibility of performing one- and two-qubit operations by solely tuning gate vol…
