Investigation of dynamical excitations is difficult but crucial to the understanding of many exotic quantum phenomena discovered in quantum materials. This is particularly true for highly frustrated quantum antiferromagnets whose dynamical properties deviate strongly from theoretical predictions made based on the spin-wave or other approximations. Here we present a large-scale numerical calculation on the dynamical correlation functions of spin-$1/2$ triangular Heisenberg model using a state-of-the-art tensor network renormalization group method. The calculated results allow us to gain for the first time a comprehensive picture on the nature of spin excitation spectra in this highly frustrated quantum system. It provides a quantitative account for all the key features of the dynamical spectra disclosed by inelastic neutron scattering measurements for $\rm Ba_3CoSb_2O_9$, revealing the importance of the interplay between low- and high-energy excitations and its renormalization effect to the low-energy magnon bands and high-energy continuums. We identify the longitudinal Higgs modes in the intermediate-energy scale and predict the energy and momentum dependence of spectral functions along the three principal axes that can be verified by polarized neutron scattering experiments. Furthermore, we find that the spin excitation spectra weakly depend on the anisotropic ratio of the antiferromagnetic interaction.
The cradle of quantum spin liquids, triangular antiferromagnets show strong proclivity to magnetic order and require deliberate tuning to stabilize a spin-liquid state. In this brief review, we juxtapose recent theoretical developments that trace the parameter regime of the spin-liquid phase, with experimental results for Co-based and Yb-based triangular antiferromagnets. Unconventional spin dynamics arising from both ordered and disordered ground states is discussed, and the notion of a geometrically perfect triangular system is scrutinized to demonstrate non-trivial imperfections that may as…
We present the structural characterization and low-temperature magnetism of the triangular-lattice delafossite NaYbO$_2$. Synchrotron x-ray diffraction and neutron scattering exclude both structural disorder and crystal-electric-field randomness, whereas heat-capacity measurements and muon spectroscopy reveal the absence of magnetic order and persistent spin dynamics down to at least 70\,mK. Continuous magnetic excitations with the low-energy spectral weight accumulating at the $K$-point of the Brillouin zone indicate the formation of a novel spin-liquid phase in a triangular antiferromagnet. …
The ground state of the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a distorted triangular lattice is studied using a numerical-diagonalization method. The network of interactions is the $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ type; the interactions are continuously controlled between the undistorted triangular lattice and the dice lattice. We find new states between the nonmagnetic 120-degree-structured state of the undistorted triangular case and the up-up-down state of the dice case. The intermediate states show spontaneous magnetizations that are smaller than one third of the saturated magntization correspo…
The $S=1/2$ kagome- and triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnets are investigated using the numerical exact diagonalization and the finite-size scaling analysis. The behaviour of the field derivative at zero magnetization is examined for both systems. The present result indicates that the spin excitation is gapless for each system.
The Kitaev-Heisenberg model defined on both honeycomb and triangular lattices has been studied intensively in recent years as a possible model to describe spin-orbital physics in iridium oxides. In the model, there are many phases characteristic for each lattice. However, there is no study how the phases in the two lattices merge each other when geometry changes from honeycomb lattice to triangular lattice. We investigate the ground state of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model defined on the system connecting the honeycomb and triangular lattices, named a honeycomb-triangular lattice. We obtain a grou…
We report the single-crystal growth and the fundamental magnetic and thermodynamic properties of a rare-earth triangular lattice antiferromagnet CeCd$_3$As$_3$. In this rare-earth antiferromagnet, the Ce local moments form a perfect triangular lattice. Due to the spin-orbital-entangled nature of the Ce local moments, the compound exhibits extremely anisotropic antiferromagnetic couplings along the c direction and in the ab plane respectively. We show that CeCd$_3$As$_3$ represents a {\it rare} experimental realization of an antiferromagnetic Ising model on a two dimensional triangular lattice …
Motivated by recent experimental progress on triangular lattice heavy-fermion compounds, we investigate possible Lifshitz transitions and the scanning tunnel microscope (STM) spectra of the Kondo-Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice. In the heavy Fermi liquid state, the introduced Heisenberg antiferromagnetic interaction ($J_H$) results in the twice Lifshitz transition at the case of the nearest-neighbour electron hopping but with next-nearest-neighbour hole hopping and the case of the nearest-neighbour hole hopping but with next-nearest-neighbour electron hopping, respectively. Driven b…
We analyze the zero temperature phase diagrams of the spin S quantum antiferromagnet on square and triangular lattices with competing nearest and next-nearest exchange interactions as well as biquadratic couplings. We approach the problem from the large S limit. Our primary focus is on determining the extent to which the existence and character of any quantum disordered phases can be inferred from this approach.
We study the phase diagram of the frustrated Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with nearest and next-nearest neighbor spin exchange coupling, on 3-leg ladders. Using the density-matrix renormalization-group method, we obtain the complete phase diagram of the model, which includes quasi-long-range $120^\circ$ and columnar order, and a Majumdar-Ghosh phase with short-ranged correlations. All these phases are non-chiral and planar. We also identify the nature of phase transitions.
The spin-$\frac12$ triangular lattice antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model has been for a long time the prototypical model of magnetic frustration. However, only very recently this model has been proposed to be realized in the Ba$_8$CoNb$_6$O$_{24}$ compound. The ground-state and thermodynamic properties are evaluated from a high-temperature series expansions interpolation method, called "entropy method", and compared to experiments. We find a ground-state energy $e_0 = -0.5445(2)$ in perfect agreement with exact diagonalization results. We also calculate the specific heat and entropy at all tem…
In this study, we investigate the magnetic susceptibility, entropy, and isothermal magnetization curve of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on an anisotropic triangular lattice using the orthogonalized finite-temperature Lanczos method. In addition, we investigate the adiabatic magnetization curve and magnetocaloric effect. We estimate these physical quantities with sufficient accuracy in the thermodynamic limit, except at low temperatures. We observe a 1/3 magnetization plateau in the isothermal magnetization process, whereas the plateau is observed to have a slope in the adiabatic process. We sh…
Frustrated Ising magnets host exotic excitations, such as magnetic monopoles in spin ice. The ground state (GS) in this case is characterized by an extensive degeneracy and associated residual entropy going back to the pioneering work by G. Wannier who established large residual entropy of nearly 50%Rln2 per mole spins in a triangular Ising antiferromagnet (TIAF) already in 1950. Here, we endeavor to verify this result experimentally using TmMgGaO4, a novel rare-earth-based frustrated antiferromagnet with Ising spins arranged on a perfect triangular lattice. Contrary to theoretical expectation…
The perovskite Ba8CoNb6O24 comprises equilateral effective spin-1/2 Co2+ triangular layers separated by six non-magnetic layers. Susceptibility, specific heat and neutron scattering measurements combined with high-temperature series expansions and spin-wave calculations confirm that Ba8CoNb6O24 is basically a twodimensional (2D) magnet with no detectable spin anisotropy and no long-range magnetic ordering down to 0.06 K. In other words, Ba8CoNb6O24 is very close to be a realization of the paradigmatic spin-1/2 triangular Heisenberg model, which is not expected to exhibit symmetry breaking at f…
We study the effects of bond randomness in the spin-$1/2$ $J_1-J_2$ triangular Heisenberg model using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group. With increasing bond randomness, we identify a randomness induced spin-liquid-like phase without any magnetic order, dimer order, spin glass order, or valence-bond glass order. The finite-size scaling of gaps suggests the gapless nature of both spin triplet and singlet excitations, which is further supported by the broad continuum of dynamical spin structure factor. By studying the bipartite entanglement spectrum of the system on …
Motivated by multiple possible physical realizations, we study the SU(4) quantum antiferromagnet with a fundamental representation on each site of the triangular lattice. We provide evidence for a gapless liquid ground state of this system with an emergent Fermi surface of fractionalized fermionic partons coupled with a U(1) gauge field. Our conclusions are based on numerical simulations using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method, which we support with a field theory analysis.
Low-temperature magnetization curves and thermodynamics of a frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg triangular bilayer with the antiferromagnetic intradimer interaction and either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic interdimer interaction are investigated in a highly frustrated parameter region, where localized many-magnon eigenstates provide the most dominant contribution to magnetothermodynamics. Low-energy states of the highly frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg triangular bilayer can be accordingly found from a mapping correspondence with an effective triangular-lattice spin-1/2 Ising model in a field. …
We investigate non-equilibrium properties of the frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the triangular lattice. Nonequilibrium critical relaxation of frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnets shows a dynamic transition (or, at least, sharp crossover) at the same temperature $T_{\rm u}=0.282 J$ as for static properties due to unbinding of $\mathbb{Z}_2$-vortices. We show that starting from the high-temperature initial state, due to presence of $\mathbb{Z}_2$-vortices in the considering system, in a broad temperature range $T<T_{\rm u}$ the dynamic properties in the intermediate time range are s…
We investigate the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with an additional scalar chirality term and show that a chiral spin liquid is stabilized in a sizeable region of the phase diagram. This topological phase is situated in between a coplanar $120^\circ$ Néel ordered and a non-coplanar tetrahedrally ordered phase. Furthermore we discuss the nature of the spin-disordered intermediate phase in the $J_1$-$J_2$ model. We compare the groundstates from Exact Diagonalization with a Dirac spin liquid wavefunction and propose a scenario where this wavefunction describes the quantum…
We study the spin liquid candidate of the spin-$1/2$ $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice by means of density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations. By applying an external Aharonov-Bohm flux insertion in an infinitely long cylinder, we find unambiguous evidence for gapless $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid behavior. The flux insertion overcomes the finite size restriction for energy gaps and clearly shows gapless behavior at the expected wave-vectors. Using the DMRG transfer matrix, the low-lying excitation spectrum can be extracted, which shows characteristic Dir…
We show that the mesoscopic incommensurate $\mathbb{Z}_2$ vortex crystals proposed for layered triangular anisotropic magnets can be most saliently identified by two distinctive signatures in dynamical spin response experiments: The presence of pseudo-Goldstone `phonon' modes at low frequencies $ω$, associated with the collective vibrations of the vortex cores, and a characteristic multi-scattered intensity profile at higher $ω$, arising from a large number of Bragg reflections and magnon bandgaps. These are direct fingerprints of the large vortex sizes and magnetic unit cells and the solitoni…
When Heisenberg spins interact antiferromagnetically on a triangular lattice and nearest-neighbor interactions dominate, the ground state is 120$^{\circ}$ antiferromagnetism. In this work, we probe the response of this state to lifting the triangular symmetry, through investigation of the triangular antiferromagnet PdCrO$_2$ under uniaxial stress by neutron diffraction and resistivity measurements. The periodicity of the magnetic order is found to change rapidly with applied stress; the rate of change indicates that the magnetic anisotropy is roughly forty times the stress-induced bond length …
Derivation of a reduced effective model allows for a unified treatment and discussion of the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on a triangular and kagome lattice. Calculating thermodynamic quantities, i.e. the entropy $s(T)$ and uniform susceptibility $χ_0(T)$, numerically on systems up to effectively $N=48$ sites we show by comparing to full-model results that low-$T$ properties are well represented within the reduced model. Moreover, we find in the spin-liquid regime similar variation of $s(T)$ as well as $χ_0(T)$ in both models down to $T \ll J_1$. In particular, the spin liquid appears to be ch…
We study the anomalous Hall effect on the antiferromagnetic coloring-triangular lattice with a coplanar magnetic configuration in presence of a spin-orbit interaction. The effect of the spin-orbit coupling is included at effective level as a rotation of the electronic spin as the electrons hop from site to site. Our result reveals that a finite Hall conductivity in the planar 120$^{\circ}$ structure takes place if a finite spin-orbit coupling is present. A quantized Hall conductivity occurs at global band gaps resulting from the topologically non-trivial band structure.
