The fermionic dark matter (DM) absorption by nucleus or electron targets provides a distinctive signal to search for sub-GeV DM. We consider a Dirac fermion DM charged under a dark gauge group and with the dark magnetic dipole operator. The DM field mixes with right-handed neutrino and interacts with the ordinary electromagnetic charge current via the kinetic mixing term of gauge fields. As a result, the incoming DM is absorbed and converted into neutrino in final state through the dipole-charge interaction. For the DM absorption by nucleus, the recoil energy spectrum exhibit a peak at $m_χ^2/2m_N$ for each isotope in the target. XENON1T can probe the DM mass above 27 MeV and the projected constraint on the inelastic DM-nucleon cross section becomes $10^{-49}$ cm$^2$. CRESSTIII with lower energy threshold would be sensitive to the DM mass above 2 MeV. We also check that the contribution from the nuclear magnetic dipole is negligible for $^{131}{\rm Xe}$ target. The absorption of DM by bound electron target induces ionization signal and is sensitive to sub-MeV DM mass. The involvement of the ionization form factor spreads out the localized recoil energy. We show the future prospect for the constraint on the magnetic dipole coupling from the electron ionization of $^{131}{\rm Xe}$.
We discuss the role of $c \bar c g$-Fock states in the diffractive photoproduction of $J/ψ$-mesons. We build on our earlier description of the process in the color-dipole approach, where we took into account the rescattering of $c \bar c$ pairs using a Glauber-Gribov form of the dipole-nucleus amplitude. We compare the results of our calculations to recent data on the photoproduction of $J/ψ$ by the ALICE and LHCb collaborations.
We investigate the exclusive photoproduction of $J/ψ$-mesons in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions in the color dipole approach. We first test a number of dipole cross sections fitted to inclusive $F_2$-data against the total cross section of exclusive $J/ψ$-production on the free nucleon. We then use the color-dipole formulation of Glauber-Gribov theory to calculate the diffractive amplitude on the nuclear target. The real part of the free nucleon amplitude is taken into account consistent with the rules of Glauber theory. We compare our results to recent published and preliminary data on e…
We study the scattering of Milky Way dark matter (DM) particles by spin-polarised target nuclei within a set of simplified models for fermionic and vector DM where DM interacts with spin 1/2 point-like nuclei through the exchange of a vector or pseudo-vector mediator particle. This study is motivated by the possibility of using polarised targets to gain novel insights into the nature of DM. For fermionic DM, we provide an explicit expression for the polarised DM-nucleus scattering cross section refining previous results found in the literature. For vector DM, we calculate the polarised cross s…
The exclusive photoproduction of upsilon states $Υ(1S)$ and its radially excited states $Υ(2S,3S)$ is investigated in the context of ultra-peripheral collisions at the LHC energies. Predictions are presented for their production in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collision at the energies available at the LHC run 2. The rapidity and transverse momentum distributions are shown, and the robustness of the model is tested against the experimental results considering $ψ(1S,2S)$ and $Υ(1S)$ states. The theoretical framework considered in the analysis is the light-cone color dipole …
A neutral Dirac fermion is supplied as a singlet within the context of the standard model (SM) and is considered as a dark matter (DM) candidate near electroweak scale (10-1000 GeV) with nonzero magnetic dipole moment. The Dirac particles have four different types of electromagnetic couplings (four form factors) in general. We predict that the candidate mainly interacts with SM particles through magnetic dipole moment (MDM), since MDM conserves the discrete symmetries like parity (P), time reversal (T), and charge conjugation (C) or its combination CP. The magnetic dipole moment constrained by…
Cosmic ray signals from dipole-interacting dark matter annihilation are considered in the positron, antiproton and photon channels. The predicted signals in the positron channel could nicely account for the excess of positron fraction from Fermi LAT, PAMELA, HEAT and AMS-01 experiments for the dark matter mass larger than 100 GeV with a boost (enhancement) factor of 30-80. No excess of antiproton over proton ratio at the experiments also gives a severe restriction for this scenario. With the boost factors, the predicted signals from Galactic halo and signals as mono-energetic gamma-ray lines (…
We consider a simple extension of the Standard Model (SM) that incorporates a Majorana fermion dark matter and a charged scalar particle with a coupling to the SM leptons through renormalizable terms. Another renormalizable term involving the charged scalar and the Higgs boson gives rise to interactions between the dark matter and SM quarks at the one-loop level, which induce the elastic scatterings between dark matter and nucleus. The same term also affects the effective coupling of the Higgs boson to diphoton through a one-loop diagram with the charged scalar. Therefore, our model predicts a…
In this work we estimate the heavy quark production in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions at LHC energies using the color dipole formalism and the solution of the running coupling Balitsky-Kovchegov equation. Nuclear effects are considered in the computation of the total cross sections and rapidity distributions for scattering on protons and nuclei.
We study a simple one-loop induced neutrino mass model that contains both bosonic and fermionic dark matter candidates and has the capacity to explain the muon anomalous magnetic moment anomaly. We perform a comprehensive analysis by taking into account the relevant constraints of charged lepton flavor violation, electric dipole moments, and neutrino oscillation data. We examine the constraints from lepton flavor-changing $Z$ boson decays at one-loop level, particularly when the involved couplings contribute to the muon $g-2$. It is found that $\text{BR}(Z\to μτ)\simeq (10^{-7}$ - $10^{-6})$ w…
We calculate the contribution of the $|ΔS|=1$ $K$ meson exchange process generated by the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix to the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the $^9$Be nucleus by considering the $αn - αΛ$ channel coupling. It is found that the effect of the Pauli exclusion principle is not important intermediate $S=-1$ state, and that the result is consistent with the EDM of $^9$Be calculated with the $|ΔS|=1$ interactions as a perturbation without considering the nucleus-hypernucleus mixing. Our result suggests that the effect of the $|ΔS|=1$ interactions is neither suppressed nor enhanc…
We consider models where a hidden U(1)' interacts with the Standard Model via kinetic mixing. We assume the dark matter is neutral under this U(1)', but interacts with it via higher dimension operators. In particular, we consider a hidden dipole operator for fermionic dark matter, and charge radius and Rayleigh operators for scalar dark matter. These models naturally explain the absence of direct detection signals, but allow for a thermal cosmology. LHC searches for the Z' represent a powerful probe.
In this thesis, we study the detailed partonic content of the quantum states of a quark-antiquark color dipole subject to high-energy evolution, which are represented by a set of dipoles generated by a stochastic binary branching process, in the scattering off a large nucleus, and produce predictions for diffractive dissociation in electron-ion collisions, based on the dipole picture of QCD. Our main results are as follows. First, the scattering events of a color dipole, when parameters are set in such a way that the total cross section is small, are triggered by rare partonic fluctuations, wh…
In this work we analyse the theoretical uncertainties on the predictions for the photoproduction of light vector mesons in coherent pp, pA and AA collisions at the LHC energies using the color dipole approach. In particular, we present our predictions for the rapidity distribution for rh0 and phi photoproduction and perform an analysis on the uncertainties associated to the choice of vector meson wavefunctionand the phenomenological models for the dipole cross section. Comparison is done with the recent ALICE analysis on coherent production of rho at 2.76 TeV in PbPb collisions.
In this work we consider a minimal version of the scotogenic model capable of accounting for an electron electric dipole moment within experimental sensitivity reach in addition to providing a dark matter candidate and radiatively generating neutrino masses. The Standard Model is minimally extended by two sterile fermions and one inert scalar doublet, both having odd parity, while the Standard Model particles have an even parity, imposed by a Z2 symmetry. The neutrino Yukawa couplings provide additional sources of CP violation, and thus a possible impact on electric dipole moments of charged l…
We investigate the theoretical uncertainty on the predictions for the photoproduction of J/psi and Upsilon states in the proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC within the color dipole formalism. Predictions for the rapidity distributions are presented and the dependence on the meson wavefunction, heavy quark mass as well as the models for the dipole cross section are analyzed. We compare directly the theoretical results to the recent data from ALICE collaboration on J/psi production in pPb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.02 TeV and in PbPb collisio…
We re-evaluate the nuclear suppression of forward $J/ψ$ production at high energy in the Color Glass Condensate framework. We use the collinear approximation for the projectile proton probed at large $x$ and an up to date dipole cross section fitted to HERA data to describe the target in proton-proton collisions. We show that using the Glauber approach to generalize the proton dipole cross section to the case of a nucleus target leads to a nuclear modification factor much closer to LHC data than previous estimates using the same framework.
We develop a picture of dipole-nucleus (namely dilute-dense) and dipole-dipole (dilute-dilute) scattering in the high-energy regime based on the analysis of the fluctuations in the quantum evolution. We emphasize the difference in the nature of the fluctuations probed in these two processes respectively, which, interestingly enough, leads to observable differences in the scattering amplitude profiles.
In order to understand the initial partonic state in proton-nucleus and electron-nucleus collisions, we investigate the total, inelastic, and (quasi-)elastic cross sections in pA and gamma-A collisions, as these observables are insensitive to possible collective effects in the final state interactions. We used as a tool the DIPSY dipole model, which is based on BFKL dynamics including non-leading effects, saturation, and colour interference, which we have extended to describe collisions of protons and virtual photons with nuclei. We present results for collisions with O, Cu, and Pb nuclei, and…
We study single inclusive hadron production in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions in the CGC framework. The parameters in the calculation are obtained by fitting electron-proton deep inelastic scattering data. The obtained dipole-proton amplitude is generalized to dipole-nucleus scattering without any additional nuclear parameters other than the Woods-Saxon distribution. We show that it is possible to use an initial condition without an anomalous dimension and still obtain a good description of the HERA inclusive cross section and LHC single particle production measurements. We argue …
Effects of coherence in neutrino-production of pions off nuclei are studied employing the color dipole representation and path integral technique. If the nucleus remains intact, the process is controlled by the interplay of two length scales. One is related to the pion mass and is quite long (at low Q^2), while the other, associated with heavy axial-vector states, is much shorter. The Adler relation is found to be broken at all energies, but especially strongly at ν> 10 GeV, where the cross section is suppressed by a factor ~A^{-1/3}. On the contrary, in a process where the recoil nucleus brea…
The Green-Kubo relation and fluctuation-dissipation theorem are employed to calculate the shear viscosity $η$ of a finite hot nucleus directly from the width and energy of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) of this nucleus. The ratio $η/s$ of shear viscosity $η$ to entropy density $s$ is extracted from the experimental systematics of the GDR in copper, tin and lead isotopes at finite temperature $T$. These empirical results are then compared with the predictions by several independent models, as well as with almost model-independent estimations. Based on these results, it is concluded that the r…
Inclusive production of $J/ψ$ mesons, especially at forward rapidities, is an important probe of small-x gluons in protons and nuclei. In this paper we re-evaluate the production cross sections in the Color Glass Condensate framework, where the process is described by a large x gluon from the probe splitting into a quark pair and eikonally interacting with the target proton or nucleus. Using a standard collinear gluon distribution for the probe and an up to date dipole cross section fitted to HERA data to describe the target we achieve a rather good description of the cross section in proton-p…
In this work we study the diffractive photoproduction of $J/Ψ$ in proton-proton, proton - nucleus and nucleus - nucleus collisions at LHC energies using the color dipole formalism and different models for the forward dipole - target scattering amplitude. Our goal is to estimate the theoretical uncertainty present in the current predictions in the literature. Our results are compared with the experimental data and predictions for higher energies are presented.
We compute cross sections for incoherent and coherent diffractive J/Psi production in ultraperipheral nucleus-nucleus and proton-nucleus collisions using two different dipole models fitted to HERA data. We obtain a reasonably good description of the available ALICE data for coherent J/Ψproduction and present our prediction for the incoherent cross section. We also find that while the normalization of the cross section depends quite strongly on the dipole model and vector meson wave function used, the rapidity dependence is very well constrained.
Considering the high-energy limit of the QCD gluon distribution inside a nucleus, we calculate the proton-nucleus total inelastic cross section using a simplified dipole model. We show that, if gluon saturation occurs in the nuclear surface region, the total cross section of proton-nucleus collisions increases more rapidly as a function of the incident energy compared to that of a Glauber-type estimate. We discuss the implications of this with respect to recent ultra-high-energy cosmic ray experiments.
The McLerran-Venugopalan model describes a highly boosted hadron/nucleus as a sheet of random color charges which source soft classical Weizsäcker-Williams gluon fields. We show that due to fluctuations, individual configurations are azimuthally anisotropic. We present initial evidence that impact parameter dependent small-x JIMWLK resummation preserves such anisotropies over several units of rapidity. Finally, we compute the first four azimuthal Fourier amplitudes of the S-matrix of a fundamental dipole in such background fields.
The production of forward $J/ψ$ mesons in proton-nucleus collisions can provide important information on gluon saturation. In a previous work we studied this process in the Color Glass Condensate framework, describing the target using a dipole cross section fitted to HERA inclusive data and extrapolated to the case of a nuclear target using the optical Glauber model. In this work we study the centrality dependence of the nuclear suppression in this model and compare our results with recent LHC data for this observable.
We study an effective field theory which includes the Standard Model extended by a Dark Sector consisting of two fermionic $SU(2)_{L}$-doublets. A $Z_2$ parity guarantees that, after electroweak symmetry breaking, the lightest neutral particle is stable, acting as a WIMP. The dark sector interacts with the Higgs and gauge bosons through renormalizable and non-renormalizable $d=5$ operators. We find that a WIMP with a mass around the electroweak scale, i.e. accessible at the LHC, is consistent with collider and astrophysical data only when non-trivial magnetic dipole interactions with the gauge…
Forward $J/ψ$ production and suppression in high energy proton-nucleus collisions can be an important probe of gluon saturation. In an earlier work we studied this process in the Color Glass Condensate framework and showed that using the Glauber approach to extrapolate the dipole cross section of a proton to a nucleus leads to results closer to experimental data than previous calculations in this framework. Here we investigate the centrality dependence of the nuclear suppression in this model and show a comparison of our results with recent LHC data.
For a class of macroscopic dark matter with a large interaction strength with Standard Model particles, a nucleus could be captured by the dense, heavy dark matter as it traverses ordinary material. The radiated photon carries most of the binding energy and is a characteristic signature for dark matter detection. We develop analytic formulas and present numerical results for this radiative capture process in the low energy, non-dipole limit. Large-volume neutrino detectors like NO$ν$A, JUNO, DUNE and Super(Hyper)-K may detect multi-hit or single-hit radiative capture events and can search for …
We calculate the fermionic corrections to the photon-energy spectrum of Bbar -> X_sgamma which arise from the self-interference of the chromomagnetic dipole operator Q_8 at next-to-next-to-leading order by applying naive non-abelianization. The resulting O(beta_0 alpha_s^2) correction to the Bbar -> X_sgamma branching ratio amounts to a relative shift of +0.12% (+0.27%) for a photon-energy cut of 1.6 GeV (1.0 GeV). We also comment on the potential size of resummation and non-perturbative effects related to Q_8.
It is shown that odd harmonic azimuthal correlations, including the directed flow $v_1$, in forward two-particle production in peripheral proton-nucleus ($pA$) collisions can arise simply from the radial nuclear profile of a large nucleus. This requires consideration of the C-odd part of the gluonic generalized transverse momentum dependent (GTMD) correlator of nucleons in the nucleus. The gluonic GTMD correlator is the Fourier transform of an off-forward hadronic matrix element containing gluonic field strength tensors that are connected by gauge links. It is parametrized in terms of various …
We analyse some dimension-five CPT-even and Lorentz-violating nonminimal couplings between fermionic and gauge fields in the context of the Dirac equation. After evaluating the nonrelativistic Hamiltonian, we discuss the behavior of the terms under discrete symmetries and analyse the implied effects. We then use the anomalous magnetic dipole moment and electron electric dipole moment measurements to reach upper bounds of $1$ part in $10^{20}$ and $10^{24}$ $\left( eV\right) ^{-1}$, improving the level of restriction on such couplings by at least 8 orders of magnitude. These upper bounds are al…
We study the production of heavy quarkonium states in high energy proton-nucleus collisions. Following earlier work of Blaizot, Fujii, Gelis, and Venugopalan, we systematically include both small $x$ evolution and multiple scattering effects on heavy quark pair production within the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) framework. We obtain for the first time expressions in the Non-Relativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism for heavy quarkonium differential cross sections as a function of transverse momentum and rapidity. We observe that the production of color singlet heavy quark pairs is sensit…
