We obtained the formal solution of the auxiliary system of Non Linear Sigma Models, whose target space is a rank 1 symmetric space based on the indefinite orthogonal group O(p,q), corresponding to an arbitrary solution of the NLSM. This class includes Anti-de Sitter, de Sitter and Hyperbolic spaces, which are of interest in view of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The formal solution is related to the Pohlmeyer reduction of the NLSM, constituting another link between the NLSM and the reduced theory. Besides deriving the solution, we also review the Pohlmeyer reduction of such models. Finally, we comment on the implications for the monodromy matrix and its eigenvalues.
We show that the integrability of the $SO(N)/SO(N-1)$ Principal Chiral Model (PCM) originates from the Pohlmeyer reduction of the $O(N)$ Non Linear Sigma Model (NLSM). In particular, we show that the Lax pair of the PCM is related upon redefinitions and identification of parameters to the zero curvature condition, which is a consequence of the flatness of the enhanced space used in the Pohlmeyer reduction. This identification provides the solution of the auxiliary system that corresponds to an arbitrary NLSM/PCM solution.
We discuss the integrability properties of the Boussinesq equations in the language of geometrical quantities defined on an appropriately chosen coset manifold connected with the $W_{3}$ algebra of Zamolodchikov. We provide a geometrical interpretation to the commuting conserved quantities, Lax-pair formulation, zero-curvature representation, Miura maps, etc. in the framework of nonlinear realization method.
We review the role of integrability in certain aspects of N=4 SYM which go beyond the planar spectrum. In particular, we discuss integrability in relation to non-planar anomalous dimensions, multi-point functions and Maldacena-Wilson loops.
We study the KdV and Burgers nonlinear systems and show in a consistent way that they can be mapped to each other through a strong requirement about their evolutions's flows to be connected. We expect that the established mapping between these particular systems should shed more light towards accomplishing some unification's mechanism for KdV hierarchy's integrable systems.
In this paper we continue the investigation of aspects of integrability of the type IIA AdS(3) x S(3) x S(3) x S(1) and AdS(3) x S(3) x T(4) superstrings. By constructing a one parameter family of flat connections we prove that the Green-Schwarz string is classically integrable, at least to quadratic order in fermions, without fixing the kappa-symmetry. We then compare the quantum dispersion relation, fixed by integrability up to an unknown interpolating function h(lambda), to explicit one-loop calculations on the string worldsheet. For AdS(3) x S(3) x S(3) x S(1) the spectrum contains heavy, …
The exact quantum integrability aspects of a sector of the membrane is investigated. It is found that spherical membranes moving in flat target spacetime backgrounds admit a class of integrable solutions linked to SU(infty) SDYM equations (dimensionally reduced to one temporal dimension). After a suitable ansatz, the SDYM equations can be recast in the form of the continuous Toda molecule equations whose symmetry algebra is the dimensional reduction of the W (infty} plus {\bar W}(infty} algebra. The latter algebra is explicitly constructed. Highest weight representations are built directly fro…
In the framework of six-dimensional conformal field theories with ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetry we develop the map between the holographic description, the field theoretical description and the associated Hanany-Witten set-ups. General expressions that calculate various observables are presented. The study of string solitons singles out a special background of Massive IIA on which we show (by explicitly finding a Lax pair) that the Neveu-Schwarz part of the string sigma model is classically integrable. We study the particular dual conformal field theory and compute some of its observables.
With the help of the Penrose-Ward transform, which relates certain holomorphic vector bundles over the supertwistor space to the equations of motion of self-dual SYM theory in four dimensions, we construct hidden infinite-dimensional symmetries of the theory. We also present a new and shorter proof (cf. hep-th/0412163) of the relation between certain deformation algebras and hidden symmetry algebras. This article is based on a talk given by the author at the Workshop on Supersymmetries and Quantum Symmetries 2005 at the BLTP in Dubna, Russia.
We consider the monodromy matrix for the pure spinor IIB superstring on $AdS_5\times S^5$ at leading order at strong coupling, in particular its variation under an infinitesimal and continuous deformation of the contour. Such variation is equivalent to the insertion of a local operator. Demanding the BRST-closure for such an operator rules out its existence, implying that the monodromy matrix remains contour-independent at the first order in perturbation theory. Furthermore we explicitly compute the field strength corresponding to the flat connections up to leading order and directly check tha…
In this dissertation, we discuss how our understanding of the large-N spectrum of AdS/CFT has been deepened by integrability-based approaches. We begin with a comprehensive review of the integrability of the gauge theory spin-chain and that of the string sigma model. In the light of the AdS/CFT duality, they should be just two ways of describing the same underlying integrability, and it is believed that the unified integrability can be characterised by a set of Bethe ansatz equations which is valid for all values of the 't Hooft coupling. By studying the asymptotic spectrum of the AdS/CFT in t…
Various recently developed connections between supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in four dimensions and two dimensional integrable systems serve as crucial ingredients in improving our understanding of the AdS/CFT correspondence. In this review, we highlight some connections between superconformal four dimensional Yang-Mills theory and various integrable systems. In particular, we focus on the role of Yangian symmetries in studying the gauge theory dual of closed string excitations. We also briefly review how the gauge theory connects to Calogero models and open quantum spin chains through th…
In this thesis, we report on different aspects of integrability in supersymmetric gauge theories. The main tool of investigation is twistor geometry. In trying to be self-contained, we first present a brief review about the basics of twistor geometry. We then focus on the twistor description of various gauge theories in four and three space-time dimensions. These include self-dual supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theories and relatives, non-self-dual SYM theories and supersymmetric Bogomolny models. Furthermore, we present a detailed investigation of integrability of self-dual SYM theories. In …
This paper considers aspects of a Kagome lattice system with states classified by plane partitions. Using two sets of free fermions, we rewrite the lattice in terms of two families of spin chains. In this formalism, the quantum crystals Hamiltonian becomes more transparent, and we determine expressions for the first 3 levels of plane partition states. A classical statistical model associated with local configurations in the Kagome lattice is also defined, and we show that a reduction of this classical system gives two Yang-Baxter integrable subsystems analogous to a descendant of the 6-vertex …
Aspects of the D=4, N=4 superconformal symmetry relevant to the AdS/CFT duality and integrability are reviewed. These include the Lie superalgebra psu(2,2|4), its representations, conformal transformations and correlation functions in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory as well as an illustration of the AdS5xS5 superspace on which the dual string theory is formulated.
In this work we study various aspects of six-dimensional ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ SCFTs. We consider the construction of their string duals in Massive IIA and discuss some observables in given examples. We study the dynamics of string solitons wrapping and rotating on the Massive IIA background and show that the associated Hamiltonian system is both non-integrable and chaotic, implying the non-integrability of the dual CFT. Our procedure is analytic, using well developed mathematical techniques, and numerical, by the explicit calculation of power spectra, Lyapunov coefficients and Poincaré sections.
Using holographic-fluid techniques, we discuss some aspects of the integrability properties of Einstein's equations in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes. We review and we amend the results of 1506.04813 on how exact four-dimensional Einstein spacetimes, which are algebraically special with respect to Petrov's classification, can be reconstructed from boundary data: this is possible if the boundary metric supports a traceless, symmetric and conserved complex rank-two tensor, which is related to the boundary Cotton and energy-momentum tensors, and if the hydrodynamic congruence is shearle…
The question of the integrability of real-coupling affine toda field theory on a half line is discussed. It is shown, by examining low-spin conserved charges, that the boundary conditions preserving integrability are strongly constrained. In particular, among the cases treated so far, $e_6^{(1)}$, $d_n^{(1)}$ and $a_n^{(1)}, \ n\ge 2$, there can be no free parameters introduced by such boundary conditions; indeed the only remaining freedom (apart from choosing the simple condition $\partial_1ϕ=0$), resides in a choice of signs. For a special case of the boundary condition, accessible only for …
Certain aspects of the integrability/solvability of the Calogero-Sutherland-Moser systems and the Ruijsenaars-Schneider-van Diejen systems with rational and trigonometric potentials are reviewed. The equilibrium positions of classical multi-particle systems and the eigenfunctions of single-particle quantum mechanics are described by the same orthogonal polynomials: the Hermite, Laguerre, Jacobi, continuous Hahn, Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials. The Hamiltonians of these single-particle quantum mechanical systems have two remarkable properties, factorization and shape invariance.
This thesis is devoted to the study of geometric aspects of black holes and integrable structures in string theory. In the first part, symmetries of the horizon and its bulk extension will be investigated. We investigate the horizon conjecture beyond the supergravity approximation, by considering α' corrections of heterotic supergravity in perturbation theory, and show that standard global techniques can no longer be applied. A sufficient condition to establish the horizon conjecture will be identified. As a consequence of our analysis, we find a no-go theorem for AdS2 backgrounds in heterotic…
It is well-known that sigma-models with symmetric target spaces are classically integrable. At the example of the model with target space the flag manifold U(3)/U(1)^3 -- a non-symmetric space -- we show that the introduction of torsion allows to cast the equations of motion in the form of a zero-curvature condition for a one-parametric family of connections, which can be a sign of integrability of the theory. We also elaborate on geometric aspects of the proposed model.
