Using a spherically symmetric ansatz, we show that the Chern-Simons O(3)-sigma model with a logarithmic potential admits topological solutions. This result is quite interesting since the Gausson-type logarithmic potential only predicted topological solutions in $(1+1)$D models. To accomplish our goal, the Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) method is used, to saturate the energy and obtain the BPS equations. Next, we show by the numerical method is the graphical results of the topological fields, as well as, the magnetic field behavior that generates a flux given by $Φ_{flux}=-\mathcal{Q}/κ$ and the energy density of the structures of vortices. On the other hand, we evaluate the measure of the differential configurational complexity (DCC) of the topological structures, by considering the energy density of the vortex. This analysis is important because it will provide us with information about the possible phase transitions associated with the localized structures and it shows that our model only supports the one-phase transition.
The topological structures of a $ϕ^6$ theory with multi-field are studied. The $ϕ^6$ theory is interesting because it is a theory that allows the shrinkage of topological structures generating double-kink or even multi-kink configurations. In this work, we consider and study the solutions of a two real scalar fields model. To reach our purpose, we investigate the BPS properties of the fields using the approach proposed by Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield. Using the BPS energy density, the differential configurational entropy (DCE) of the BPS structures is studied. The result of the DCE indicates…
The ${\cal N}=1$ SUSY nonlinear sigma models in four spacetime dimensions are studied to obtain BPS walls and junctions. A nonlinear sigma model with a single chiral scalar superfield is found which has a moduli space of the topology of $S^1$ and admits BPS walls and junctions connecting arbitrary points in moduli space. New BPS junction solutions connecting $N$ discrete vacua are also found for nonlinear sigma models with several chiral scalar superfields. More detailed exposition of our results can be found in Ref.\cite{NNS}.
BPS lumps in ${\cal N}=2$ SUSY nonlinear sigma models on hyper-\kahler manifolds in four dimensions are studied. We present new lump solutions with various kinds of topological charges. New BPS equations and a new BPS bound, expressed by the three complex structures on hyper-\kahler manifolds, are found. We show that any states satisfying these BPS equations preserve 1/8 (1/4) SUSY of ${\cal N}=2$ SUSY nonlinear sigma models with (without) a potential term. These BPS states include non-parallel multi-(Q-)lumps.
The stability of the kinks of the non-linear ${\mathbb S}^2$-sigma model discovered in Phys. Rev. Lett. 101(2008)131602 is discussed from several points of view. After a direct estimation of the spectra of the second-order fluctuation operators around topological kinks, first-order field equations are proposed to distinguish between BPS and non-BPS kinks. The one-loop mass shifts caused by quantum fluctuations around the topological kinks are computed using the Cahill-Comtet-Glauber formula proposed in Phys. Lett. 64B(1976)283. The (lack of) stability of the non-topological kinks is unveiled b…
The integrability of N=(2,2) dilaton supergravity in two dimensions is studied by the use of the graded Poisson Sigma model approach. Though important differences compared to the purely bosonic models are found, the general analytic solutions are obtained. The latter include minimally gauged models as well as an ungauged version. BPS solutions are an especially interesting subclass.
We discuss hypermultiplets admitting degenerate discrete vacua and BPS domain walls interpolating them. This talk is based on the original papers, hep-th/0307274, hep-th/0211103 and hep-th/0302028.
Non-supersymmetric multi-wall configurations are generically unstable. It is proposed that the stabilization in compact space can be achieved by introducing a winding number into the model. A BPS-like bound is studied for the energy of configuration with nonvanishing winding number. Winding number is implemented in an ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric nonlinear sigma model with two chiral scalar fields and a bound states of BPS and anti-BPS walls is found to exist in noncompact spaces. Even in compactified space $S^1$, this nontrivial bound state persists above a critical radius of the compact dimen…
We study doubly periodic Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) lumps in supersymmetric CP^{N-1} non-linear sigma models on a torus T^2. Following the philosophy of the Harrington-Shepard construction of calorons in Yang-Mills theory, we obtain the n-lump solutions on compact spaces by suitably arranging the n-lumps on R^2 at equal intervals. We examine the modular invariance of the solutions and find that there are no modular invariant solutions for n=1,2 in this construction.
Four-dimensional massive N=2 nonlinear sigma models and BPS wall solutions are studied in the off-shell harmonic superspace approach in which N=2 supersymmetry is manifest. The general nonlinear sigma model can be described by an analytic harmonic potential which is the hyper-Kahler analog of the Kahler potential in N=1 theory. We examine the massive nonlinear sigma model with multi-center four-dimensional target hyper-Kahler metrics and derive the corresponding BPS equation. We study in some detail two particular cases with the Taub-NUT and double Taub-NUT metrics. The latter embodies, as its…
We show that CPn sigma model solitons solve the field equations of a Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) action and, furthermore, we prove that the non-BPS soliton/anti-soliton solutions of the sigma model also solve the DBI equations. Using the moduli space approximation we compare the dynamics of the BPS sigma model solitons with that of the associated DBI solitons. We find that for the CP1 case the metric on the moduli space of sigma model solitons is identical to that of the moduli space of DBI solitons, but for CPn with n>1 we show that the two metrics are not equal. We also consider the possibility …
BPS wall solutions are obtained for N=2 supersymmetric nonlinear sigma model with Eguchi-Hanson target manifold in a manifestly supersymmetric manner. The model is constructed by a massive hyper-Kahler quotient method both in the N=1 superfield and in the N=2 superfield (harmonic superspace). We describe the model in simple terms and give relations between various parameterizations which are useful to describe the model and the solution. Some more details can be found in our previous paper [hep-th/0211103]. This article is dedicated to Professor Hiroshi Ezawa on the occasion of his seventieth …
With the non-Abelian Hyper-Kahler quotient by U(M) and SU(M) gauge groups, we give the massive Hyper-Kahler sigma models that are not toric in the N=1 superfield formalism. The U(M) quotient gives N!/[M! (N-M)!] (N is a number of flavors) discrete vacua that may allow various types of domain walls, whereas the SU(M) quotient gives no discrete vacua. We derive BPS domain wall solution in the case of N=2 and M=1 in the U(M) quotient model.
We investigate the existence of self-dual solitons with internal structure in a gauged $O(3)$ nonlinear sigma model immersed in a dielectric medium generated by a real scalar field (dubbed the source field). We consider rotationally symmetric configurations and applying the {Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield} formalism to obtain the energy lower bound and the respective {first-order differential equations (or self-dual equations).} By solving such a system of equations for three different dielectric media, we find the internal structure generates relevant changes in the soliton profiles when comp…
BPS walls and junctions are studied in ${\cal N}=1$ SUSY nonlinear sigma models in four spacetime dimensions. New BPS junction solutions connecting N discrete vacua are found for nonlinear sigma models with several chiral scalar superfields. A nonlinear sigma model with a single chiral scalar superfield is also found which has a moduli space of the topology of $S^1$ and admits BPS walls and junctions connecting arbitrary points in moduli space. SUSY condition in nonlinear sigma models are classified either as stationary points of superpotential or singularities of the Kähler metric in field sp…
The Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) multiwall solutions are constructed in a massive Kahler nonlinear sigma model on the complex quadric surface, Q^N=SO(N+2)/[SO(N)\times SO(2)] in 3-dimensional space-time. The theory has a non-trivial scalar potential generated by the Scherk-Schwarz dimensional reduction from the massless nonlinear sigma model on Q^N in 4-dimensional space-time and it gives rise to 2[N/2+1] discrete vacua. The BPS wall solutions connecting these vacua are obtained based on the moduli matrix approach. It is also shown that the moduli space of the BPS wall solutions is the…
We construct static and also time-dependent solutions in a non-linear sigma model with target space being the flag manifold $F_2=SU(3)/U(1)^2$ on the four dimensional Minkowski space-time by analytically solving the second order Euler-Lagrange equation. We show the static solutions saturate an energy lower bound and can be derived from coupled first order equations though they are saddle point solutions. We also discuss basic properties of the time-dependent solutions.
BPS equations and wall solutions are studied keeping (part of) supersymmetry (SUSY) manifest. Using N=1 superfields, massive hyper-Kahler quotient is introduced to obtain massive N=2 (8 SUSY) nonlinear sigma models in four dimensions with T*CP(n) target manifold, which yield BPS wall solutions for the n=1 case. We also describe massive hyper-Kahler quotient of T*CP(n) by using the harmonic superspace formalism which preserves all SUSY manifestly, and BPS equations and wall solutions are obtained in the n=1 case.
We study the elliptic genera of two-dimensional orbifold CFTs, where the orbifolding procedure introduces du Val surface singularities on the target space. The N=4 character decompositions of the elliptic genus contributions from the twisted sectors at the singularities obey a consistent scaling property, and contain information about the arrangement of exceptional rational curves in the resolution. We also discuss how these twisted sector elliptic genera are related to twining genera and Hodge elliptic genera for sigma models with K3 target space.
We formulate four-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 1$ supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models on Hermitian symmetric spaces with higher derivative terms, free from the auxiliary field problem and the Ostrogradski's ghosts, as gauged linear sigma models. We then study Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield equations preserving 1/2 or 1/4 supersymmetries. We find that there are distinct branches, that we call canonical ($F=0$) and non-canonical ($F\neq 0$) branches, associated with solutions to auxiliary fields $F$ in chiral multiplets. For the ${\mathbb C}P^N$ model, we obtain a supersymmetric ${\mathbb C}P^N$…
A first-order `BPS' equation is obtained for 1/8 supersymmetric intersections of soliton-membranes (lumps) of supersymmetric (4+1)-dimensional massless sigma models, and a special non-singular solution is found that preserves 1/4 supersymmetry. For 4-dimensional hyper-Kähler target spaces ($HK_4$) the BPS equation is shown to be the low-energy limit of the equation for a Cayley-calibrated 4-surface in $\bE^4\times HK_4$. Similar first-order equations are found for stationary intersections of Q-lump-membranes of the massive sigma model, but now generic solutions preserve either 1/8 supersymmetr…
We show that a four-parameter generating solution for a general class of four-dimensional, spherically-symmetric, static, dyonic BPS saturated solutions of leading-order effective equations of toroidally compactified heterotic or type II superstring theory are exact string solutions. The corresponding ten-dimensional background defines a conformal sigma-model which is a particular case of a `chiral null model' with curved `transverse' part. The exact conformal invariance is a consequence of the chiral null structure of the `electric' part of the model and the N=4 world-sheet supersymmetry of i…
We review the derivation of a noncommutative version of the nonlinear sigma model on $\CPn$ and it's soliton solutions for finite $θ$ emphasizing the similarities it bears to the GMS scalar field theory. It is also shown that unlike the scalar theory, some care needs to be taken in defining the topological charge of BPS solitons of the theory due to nonvanishing surface terms in the energy functional. Finally it is shown that, like its commutative analogue, the noncommutative $\CPn$-model also exhibits a non-BPS sector. Unlike the commutative case however, there are some surprises in the nonco…
Massive maximally-supersymmetric sigma models are shown to exhibit multiple static kink-domain wall solutions that preserve 1/2 of the supersymmetry. The kink moduli space admits a natural Kahler metric. We examine in some detail the case when the target of the sigma model is given by the co-tangent bundle of CP^n equipped with the Calabi metric, and we show that there exist BPS solutions corresponding to n kinks at arbitrary separation. We also describe how 1/4-BPS charged and intersecting domain walls are described in the low-energy dynamics on the kink moduli space. We comment on the simila…
Nonlinear sigma models (NLSM) in d=3 have many interesting and non-trivial features, which were explored poorly in contrast with NLSM in d=2 and d=4. We present a few results from our study of the perturbative and non-perturbative properties of three-dimensional (3D) NLSM. i) We have shown that cancellation of ultra-violet (UV) divergences takes place in 3D extended (N=2,4) supersymmetric NLSM in low orders of the 1/n expansion. ii) We consider noncommutative extension of the 3D CP(n) model, and study low-energy dynamics of BPS solitons in this model. We also discuss briefly dynamics of non-BP…
Quantum field theory $L_1$ on spacetime $X_{1}$ can be coupled to another quantum field theory $L_2$ on a spacetime $X_{2}$ via the third quantum field theory $L_{12}$ living on $X_{12} = X_{1} \cap X_{2}$. We explore several such constructions with two and four dimensional $X_{1}, X_{2}$'s and zero and two dimensional $X_{12}$'s, in the context of $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry, non-perturbative Dyson-Schwinger equations, and BPS/CFT correspondence. The companion paper will show that the BPZ and KZ equations of two dimensional conformal field theory are obeyed by the half-BPS surface defects i…
Nonlinear `sigma' models in two dimensions have BPS solitons which are solutions of self- and anti-self-duality constraints. In this paper, we find their analogues for fuzzy sigma models on fuzzy spheres which were treated in detail by us in earlier work. We show that fuzzy BPS solitons are quantized versions of `Bott projectors', and construct them explicitly. Their supersymmetric versions follow from the work of S. Kurkcuoglu.
Magnetized Baryonic layer and a novel BPS bound in the gauged-Non-Linear-Sigma-Model-Maxwell theory in (3+1)-dimensions through Hamilton-Jacobi equation
Non-linear sigma models with scalar fields taking values on $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^n$ complex manifolds are addressed. In the simplest $n=1$ case, where the target manifold is the $\mathbb{S}^2$ sphere, we describe the scalar fields by means of stereographic maps. In this case when the $\mathbb{U}(1)$ symmetry is gauged and Maxwell and mass terms are allowed, the model accommodates stable self-dual vortices of two kinds with different energies per unit length and where the Higgs field winds at the cores around the two opposite poles of the sphere. Allowing for dielectric functions in the magnet…
We consider the spectrum of BPS states of the heterotic sigma model with $(0,8)$ supersymmetry and $T^8$ target, as well as its second-quantized counterpart. We show that the counting function for such states is intimately related to Borcherds' automorphic form $Φ_{12}$, a modular form which exhibits automorphy for $O(2,26;{\mathbb Z})$. We comment on possible implications for Umbral moonshine and theories of AdS$_3$ gravity.
We provide a Lagrangian formulation of \Nf supersymmetric mechanics describing the motion of an isospin carrying particle on conformal to hyper-Kähler spaces in a non-Abelian background gauge field. In two examples we discuss in details, this background field is identified with the field of BPST instantons in the flat and Taub-NUT spaces.
Effects of mass deformations on 1/2 Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) non-Abelian vortices are studied in 4d N=2 supersymmetric U(1) \times SO(2n) and U(1) \times USp(2n) gauge theories, with Nf=2n quark multiplets. The 2d N=(2,2) effective worldsheet sigma models on the Hermitian symmetric spaces SO(2n)/U(n) and USp(2n)/U(n) found recently which describe the low-energy excitations of the orientational moduli of the vortices, are generalized to the respective massive sigma models. The continuous vortex moduli spaces are replaced by a finite number (2^{n-1} or 2^{n}) of vortex solutions. The…
We propose an exactly solvable Grassmannian sigma-model coupled to the Chern-Simons theory. In the presence of a novel topological term our model admits exact self-dual vortex solutions which are identical to those of pure Grassmannian model, but the topological charge has a physical meaning as a magnetic flux since the gauge field is no longer auxiliary. We also extend the theory to a noncommutative plane and analyze the BPS solutions.
In this work, we found the solution for the field equations of eleven-dimensional supergravity with a BPS conical topological defect configuration. We chose the solutions that corresponded to a M2-brane where the space-time presents the co-dimension two. The source of the topological defect is a sigma model where the brane tension is connected with the angular deficit. We analyzed the Killing spinor equations, a 3-form gauge potential and Einstein's equations, proving that it is possible to find a full solution for the system. We analyzed the near-horizon limit proving that it is possible to o…
We classify bions in the Grassmann $Gr_{N_{\rm F},N_{\rm C}}$ sigma model (including the ${\mathbb C}P^{N_{\rm F}-1}$ model) on ${\mathbb R}^{1}\times S^{1}$ with twisted boundary conditions. We formulate these models as $U(N_{\rm C})$ gauge theories with $N_{\rm F}$ flavors in the fundamental representations. These theories can be promoted to supersymmetric gauge theories and further can be embedded into D-brane configurations in type II superstring theories. We focus on specific configurations composed of multiple fractional instantons, termed neutral bions and charged bions, which are ident…
BPS instantons are discussed in Lifshitz-type anisotropic field theories. We consider generalizations of the sigma model/Yang-Mills instantons in renormalizable higher dimensional models with the classical Lifshitz scaling invariance. In each model, BPS instanton equation takes the form of the gradient flow equations for "the superpotential" defining "the detailed balance condition". The anisotropic Weyl rescaling and the coset space dimensional reduction are used to map rotationally symmetric instantons to vortices in two-dimensional anisotropic systems on the hyperbolic plane. As examples, w…
We construct a Lagrangian formulation of \Nf supersymmetric mechanics with hyper-Kähler sigma models in a bosonic sector in the non-Abelian background gauge field. The resulting action includes a wide class of \Nf supersymmetric mechanics describing the motion of an isospin-carrying particle over spaces with non-trivial geometry. In two examples we discuss in details, the background fields are identified with the field of BPST instantons in the flat and Taub-NUT spaces.
We explore the stringy structure of 1/2-BPS bound states of NS fivebranes carrying momentum or fundamental string charge, in the decoupling limits leading to little string theory and to AdS3/CFT2 duality. We develop an exact worldsheet description of these states using null-gauged sigma models, and illustrate the construction by deriving the closed-form solution sourced by an elliptical NS5-F1 supertube. The Calabi-Yau/Landau-Ginsburg correspondence maps this geometrical worldsheet description to a non-compact LG model whose superpotential is determined by the fivebrane source configuration. S…
We uncover higher algebraic structures on Noether currents and BPS charges. It is known that equivalence classes of conserved currents form a Lie algebra. We show that at least for target space symmetries of higher parameterized WZW-type sigma-models this naturally lifts to a Lie (p+1)-algebra structure on the Noether currents themselves. Applied to the Green-Schwarz-type action functionals for super p-brane sigma-models this yields super Lie (p+1)-algebra refinements of the traditional BPS brane charge extensions of supersymmetry algebras. We discuss this in the generality of higher different…
We investigate the presence of topological structures and multiple phase transitions in the O(3)-sigma model with the gauge field governed by Maxwell's term and subject to a so-called Gausson's self-dual potential. To carry out this study, it is numerically shown that this model supports topological solutions in 3-dimensional spacetime. In fact, to obtain the topological solutions, we assume a spherically symmetrical ansatz to find the solutions, as well as some physical behaviors of the vortex, as energy and magnetic field. It is presented a planar view of the magnetic field as an interesting…
We formulate the $O(3) \s-$ model on fuzzy sphere and construct the Hopf term. We show that the field can be expanded in terms of the ladder operators of Holstein-Primakoff realisation of SU(2) algebra and the corresponding basis set can be classified into different topological sectors by the magnetic quantum numbers. We obtain topological charge $Q$ and show that $-2j\le Q \le2j$. We also construct BPS solitons. Using the covariantly conserved current, we construct the Hopf term and show that its value is $Q^2$ as in the commutative case. We also point out the interesting relation of physical…
When instantons are put into the Higgs phase, vortices are attached to instantons. We construct such composite solitons as 1/4 BPS states in five-dimensional supersymmetric U(Nc) gauge theory with Nf(>=Nc) fundamental hypermultiplets. We solve the hypermultiplet BPS equation and show that all 1/4 BPS solutions are generated by an Nc x Nf matrix which is holomorphic in two complex variables, assuming the vector multiplet BPS equation does not give additional moduli. We determine the total moduli space formed by topological sectors patched together and work out the multi-instanton solution insid…
For the study of topological vortices with non-minimal coupling, we built a kind of non-canonical O(3)-sigma model, with a Maxwell term modified by a dielectric function. Through the BPS formalism, an investigation is made on possible configurations of vortices in topological sectors of the sigma model and the real scalar field. For a particular ansatz, the solutions of the topological sector of the real scalar field are described by the known kink solutions. On the other hand, when studying the vortices in the non-minimal sector of the pure O(3)-sigma model, it is detected the emergence of so…
We study asymptotically flat stationary solutions of four-dimensional supergravity theories via the associated G/H* pseudo-Riemannian non-linear sigma models in three spatial dimensions. The Noether charge C associated to G is shown to satisfy a characteristic equation that determines it as a function of the four-dimensional conserved charges. The matrix C is nilpotent for non-rotating extremal solutions. The nilpotency degree of C is directly related to the BPS degree of the corresponding solution when they are BPS. Equivalently, the charges can be described in terms of a Weyl spinor |C > of …
We investigate the existence and properties of kink-like solitons in a class of models with two interacting scalar fields. In particular, we focus on models that display both double and single-kink solutions, treatable analytically using the Bogomol'nyi--Prasad--Sommerfield bound (BPS). Such models are of interest in applications that include Skyrmions and various superstring-motivated theories. Exploring a region of parameter space where the energy for very different spatially-bound configurations is degenerate, we show that a newly-proposed momentum-space entropic measure called Configuratio…
We discuss the central charge in supersymmetric ${\cal N}=2$ sigma models in two dimensions. The target space is a symmetric Kähler manifold, CP$(N-1)$ is an example. The U(1) isometries allow one to introduce twisted masses in the model. At the classical level the central charge contains Noether charges of the U(1) isometries and a topological charge which is an integral of a total derivative of the Killing potentials. At the quantum level the topological part of the central charge acquires anomalous terms. A bifermion term was found previously, using supersymmetry which relates it to the sup…
This thesis considers one and two dimensional supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models. First there is a discussion of the geometries of one and two dimensional sigma models, with rigid supersymmetry. For the one-dimensional case, the supersymmetry is promoted to a local one and the required gauge fields are introduced. The most general Lagrangian, including these gauge fields, is found. The constraints of the system are analysed, and its Dirac quantisation is investigated. In the next chapter we introduce equivariant cohomology which is used later in the thesis. Then actions are constructed for …
The BPS baby Skyrme models are submodels of baby Skyrme models, where the nonlinear sigma model term is suppressed. They have skyrmion solutions saturating a BPS bound, and the corresponding static energy functional is invariant under area-preserving diffeomorphisms (APDs). Here we show that the solitons in the BPS baby Skyrme model, which carry a nontrivial topological charge $Q_{b} \in π_2(S^2)$ (a winding number), are dual to vortices in a BPS vortex model with a topological charge $Q_{v}\in π_1(S^1)$ (a vortex number), in the sense that there is a map between the BPS solutions of the two m…
We discuss the application of T-duality to massive supersymmetric sigma models. In particular (1,1) supersymmetric models with off-shell central charges reveal an interesting structure. The T-duality transformations of the BPS states of these theories are also discussed and an explicit example of Q-kinks is given.
We extend the system of ungauged N=2, d=4 supergravity coupled to vector multiplets and hypermultiplets with 2-form potentials. The maximal number of 2-form potentials that one may introduce is equal to the number of isometries of either the special Kaehler or quaternionic Kaehler sigma model. We show that the local supersymmetry algebra can be realized on the 2-form potentials. These 2-forms couple electrically to strings which we refer to as stringy cosmic strings. The 1/2 BPS bosonic world-sheet actions for these strings are constructed and we discuss the properties of the 1/2 BPS stringy c…
General half-BPS A-type boundary conditions are formulated for N=2 supersymmetric field theories on compact 3-manifolds with boundary. We observe that under suitable conditions manifolds of the real A-type admitting two complex supersymmetries (related by charge conjugation) possess, besides a contact structure, a natural integrable toric foliation. A boundary, or a general co-dimension-1 defect, can be inserted along any leaf of this preferred foliation to produce manifolds with boundary that have the topology of a solid torus. We show that supersymmetric field theories on such manifolds can …
We analyze two-dimensional nonlinear sigma models at nonzero chemical potentials, which are governed by a complex action. In the spirit of contour deformations (thimbles) we extend the fields into the complex plane, which allows to incorporate the chemical potentials mu as twisted boundary conditions. We write down the equations of motion and find exact BPS-like solutions in terms of pairs of (anti)holomorphic functions, in particular generalizations of unit charge and fractional instantons to generic mu. The decay of these solutions is controled by the imaginary part of mu and a vanishing ima…
We study a simple quantum mechanical model of a spinning particle moving on a sphere in the presence of a magnetic field. The system has two ground states. As the magnetic field is varied, the ground states mix through a non-Abelian Berry phase. We show that this Berry phase is the path ordered exponential of the smooth SU(2) 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole. We further show that, by adjusting a potential on the sphere, the monopole becomes BPS and obeys the Bogomolnyi equations. For this choice of potential, it turns out that there is a hidden supersymmetry underlying the system and the Bogomolnyi …
We study the half-BPS mesonic chiral ring of the N=1 superconformal quiver theories arising from N D3-branes stacked at Y^pq and L^abc Calabi-Yau conical singularities. We map each gauge invariant operator represented on the quiver as an irreducible loop adjoint at some node, to an invariant monomial, modulo relations, in the gauged linear sigma model describing the corresponding bulk geometry. This map enables us to write a partition function at finite N over mesonic half-BPS states. It agrees with the bulk gravity interpretation of chiral ring states as cohomologically trivial giant graviton…
We compute the equivariant elliptic genera of several classes of ALE and ALF manifolds using localization in gauged linear sigma models. In the sigma model computation the equivariant action corresponds to chemical potentials for U(1) currents and the elliptic genera exhibit interesting pole structure as a function of the chemical potentials. We use this to decompose the answers into polar terms that exhibit wall crossing and universal terms. We compare our results to previous results on the large radius limit of the Taub-NUT elliptic genus and also discuss applications of our results to count…
