The effect of the width of the incident pulse to the dielectric transition layer in the scattering of an electromagnetic pulse -- a quantum lattice algorithm simulation
The effect of the thickness of the dielectric boundary layer that connects a material of refractive index $n_1$ to another of index $n_2$ is considered for the propagation of an electromagnetic pulse. For very thin boundary layer the scattering properties of the pulse mimics that found from the Fresnel jump conditions for a plane wave - except that the transmission to incident amplitudes are augmented by a factor of $\sqrt{n_2/n_1}$. As the boundary layer becomes thicker one finds deviations away from the Fresnel conditions and eventually one approaches WKB propagation. However there is found a small but unusual dip in part of the transmitted pulse that persists in time. The quantum lattice algorithm (QLA) used recovers the Maxwell equations to second order in a small parameter -- but QLA still recovers Maxwell equations when this parameter is unity. The expansion parameter is the speed of the pulse in medium $n_1$.
We report enhanced broadband Terahertz (THz) generation and detailed characterization from the interaction of femtosecond two colour laser pulses with thin transparent dielectric tape target in ambient air. The proposed source is easy to implement, exhibits excellent scalability with laser energy. Spectral characterization using Fourier transform spectrometer reveals yield enhancement of more than 150 % in the THz region of 0.1 - 10 THz with respect to conventional two-colour laser plasma source in ambient air. Further, the source spectrum extends up to 40 THz with an enhancement of flux > 30 …
The mechanism of ablation of solids by intense femtosecond laser pulses is described in an explicit analytical form. It is shown that at high intensities when the ionization of the target material is complete before the end of the pulse, the ablation mechanism is the same for both metals and dielectrics. The physics of this new ablation regime involves ion acceleration in the electrostatic field caused by charge separation created by energetic electrons escaping from the target. The formulae for ablation thresholds and ablation rates for metals and dielectrics, combining the laser and target p…
An intense, short laser pulse incident on a transparent dielectric can excite electrons from valence to the conduction band. As these electrons undergo scattering, both from phonons and ions, they emit bremsstrahlung radiation. Here we present a theory of bremsstrahlung emission appropriate for laser pulse-dielectric interactions. Simulations of the interaction, incorporating this theory, illustrate characteristics of the radiation (power, energy and spectra) for arbitrary ratios of electron collision frequency to radiation frequency. The conversion efficiency of laser pulse energy into bremss…
Dependence of the energy of ions accelerated during interaction of the laser pulse obliquelly incident on the thin foil target on the laser polarization is studied experimentally and theoretically. We found that the ion energy being maximal for the p-polarization gradually decreases when the pulse becomes s-polarized. The experimentally found dependences of the ion energy are explained by invoking the anomalous electron heating which results in high electrostatic potential formation at the target surface. Anomalous heating of electrons beyond the energy of quiver motion in the laser field is d…
A computer simulation of dynamics of an optical discharge produced in the volume of a transparent dielectric (fused silica) by a focused femtosecond laser pulse was carried out taking into account the possibility of developing small-scale ionization-field instability. The presence of small foreign inclusions in the fused silica was taken into account with the model of a nanodispersed heterogeneous medium by using Maxwell Garnett formulas. The results of the calculations made it possible to reveal the previously unknown physical mechanism that determines the periodicity of the ordered plasma-fi…
When propagating inside dielectrics, an ultrafast Bessel beam creates a high aspect-ratio cylinder of plasma with nanometric diameter that extends over several tens of micrometers to centimeters. We analyze the interaction between the intense ultrafast laser pulse and the plasma rod using particle-in-cell simulations. We show that electrons are heated and accelerated up to keV energies via transit acceleration inside the resonance lobes in the vicinity of the critical surface and compute their radiation pattern.
We analyze the electromagnetic field of a short relativistic electron beam propagating in a round, hollow dielectric channel. We show that if the beam propagates with an offset relative to the axis of the channel, in a steady state, its electromagnetic field outside of the channel extends to large radii and carries an energy that scales as the Lorentz factor $γ$ squared (in contrast to the scaling $\lnγ$ without the channel). When this energy is converted into a terahertz pulse and focused on a target, the electric field in the focus can greatly exceed typical values of the field that are curr…
Short laser pulse in wide range of wavelengths, from infrared to X-ray, disturbs electron-ion equilibrium and rises pressure in a heated layer. The case where pulse duration $τ_L$ is shorter than acoustic relaxation time $t_s$ is considered in the paper. It is shown that this short pulse may cause thermomechanical phenomena such as spallative ablation regardless to wavelength. While the physics of electron-ion relaxation on wavelength and various electron spectra of substances: there are spectra with an energy gap in semiconductors and dielectrics opposed to gapless continuous spectra in metal…
The use of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasmas has become a practical way to carry out surface treatment and one seeks to do it in a more efficient way, which requires to have control of the plasma parameters like rotational and vibrational temperatures (T_rot and T_vib). Since the T_vib of an atmospheric pressure plasma jet is an important parameter related to improvement of surface treatments, in this work it was analyzed two methods to increase the values of T_vib in the DBD plasma. One of the methods is to reduce the exit size of the DBD reactor, and the other is to change the gas f…
We report experimental evidence of electrostatic inhibition of fast electrons, generated in a highly resistive material upon irradiation with an intense ultra-short ($10^{16} W/cm^{2}$, $100 fmsec$) laser pulse. The experiment involves measurement of temporal evolution of self-generated magnetic pulses using pump-probe polarimetry. A comparison is made between the temporal behaviour of magnetic pulses generated with Aluminum and Glass targets. It is found that in contrast to Aluminium, self-generated magnetic pulse decays much faster in glass. This is attributed to the absence of return shield…
The spatiotemporal evolution of the field and plasma in the optical breakdown induced in the volume of transparent dielectric (fused silica) by the focused fs laser pulse is studied under condition of the so-called plasma-resonance-induced ionization instability that results in the deep small-scale periodic modulation of the breakdown plasma parameters in the direction of the laser polarization. In the framework of the model used, the optical electric field was calculated with allowance for the effects influencing both its long-scale structure (the beam focusing accounted for in the given-ray-…
Pulse pile-up in pulse-height energy analyzers increases when the incident rate of pulses increases relative to the inverse of the dead time per pulse of the detection system. Changes in the observed energy distributions with incident rate and detector-electronics-formed pulse shape then occur. We focus on weak high energy tails in X-ray spectra, important for measurements on partially ionized, warm, pure-hydrogen plasma. A first-principles two-photon pulse-pile-up model is derived specific to trapezoidal-shaped pulses; quantitative agreement is found between the measurements and the model pre…
A thin layer of overdense plasma is created when an electromagnetic pulse interacts with a rapidly ionizing thin foil. This layer will reflect the incoming pulse, forming a so-called plasma mirror. A simple realistic model based on paired kinetic and wave equations is used to describe analytically the process of mirror formation and the reflection and transmission of the incident pulse. The model incorporates the exact description of the ionization process in the foil and the polarization and conduction currents that follow. The analytical description of the reflected and transmitted pulses as…
Utilizing the similarity between the spinor representation of the Dirac equation and the Maxwell equations that has been recognized since the early days of relativistic quantum mechanics, a quantum lattice (QLA) representation of unitary collision stream operators of Maxwell equations is derived for both homogeneous and inhomogeneous media. A second order accurate 4 spinor scheme is developed and tested successfully for two dimensional (2D) propagation of a Gaussian pulse in a uniform medium while for normal (1D) incidence of an electromagnetic Gaussian pulse onto a dielectric interface requir…
