In computer vision, some attribution methods for explaining CNNs attempt to study how the intermediate features affect the network prediction. However, they usually ignore the feature hierarchies among the intermediate features. This paper introduces a hierarchical decomposition framework to explain CNN's decision-making process in a top-down manner. Specifically, we propose a gradient-based activation propagation (gAP) module that can decompose any intermediate CNN decision to its lower layers and find the supporting features. Then we utilize the gAP module to iteratively decompose the network decision to the supporting evidence from different CNN layers. The proposed framework can generate a deep hierarchy of strongly associated supporting evidence for the network decision, which provides insight into the decision-making process. Moreover, gAP is effort-free for understanding CNN-based models without network architecture modification and extra training process. Experiments show the effectiveness of the proposed method. The code and interactive demo website will be made publicly available.

Accurately counting cells in microscopic images is important for medical diagnoses and biological studies, but manual cell counting is very tedious, time-consuming, and prone to subjective errors, and automatic counting can be less accurate than desired. To improve the accuracy of automatic cell counting, we propose here a novel method that employs deeply-supervised density regression. A fully convolutional neural network (FCNN) serves as the primary FCNN for density map regression. Innovatively, a set of auxiliary FCNNs are employed to provide additional supervision for learning the intermedi…

The estimation of crowd count in images has a wide range of applications such as video surveillance, traffic monitoring, public safety and urban planning. Recently, the convolutional neural network (CNN) based approaches have been shown to be more effective in crowd counting than traditional methods that use handcrafted features. However, the existing CNN-based methods still suffer from large number of parameters and large storage space, which require high storage and computing resources and thus limit the real-world application. Consequently, we propose a deeply-recursive network (DR-ResNet) …

Convolutional neural network (CNN) has led to significant progress in object detection. In order to detect the objects in various sizes, the object detectors often exploit the hierarchy of the multi-scale feature maps called feature pyramid, which is readily obtained by the CNN architecture. However, the performance of these object detectors is limited since the bottom-level feature maps, which experience fewer convolutional layers, lack the semantic information needed to capture the characteristics of the small objects. In order to address such problem, various methods have been proposed to i…

Conventional Convolutional neural networks (CNN) are trained on large domain datasets and are hence typically over-represented and inefficient in limited class applications. An efficient way to convert such large many-class pre-trained networks into small few-class networks is through a hierarchical decomposition of its feature maps. To alleviate this issue, we propose an automated framework for such decomposition in Hierarchically Self Decomposing CNN (HSD-CNN), in four steps. HSD-CNN is derived automatically using a class-specific filter sensitivity analysis that quantifies the impact of spe…

Cross-domain object detection has recently attracted more and more attention for real-world applications, since it helps build robust detectors adapting well to new environments. In this work, we propose an end-to-end solution based on Faster R-CNN, where ground-truth annotations are available for source images (e.g., cartoon) but not for target ones (e.g., watercolor) during training. Motivated by the observation that the transferabilities of different neural network layers differ from each other, we propose to apply a number of domain alignment strategies to different layers of Faster R-CNN,…

Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) image classifiers are traditionally designed to have sequential convolutional layers with a single output layer. This is based on the assumption that all target classes should be treated equally and exclusively. However, some classes can be more difficult to distinguish than others, and classes may be organized in a hierarchy of categories. At the same time, a CNN is designed to learn internal representations that abstract from the input data based on its hierarchical layered structure. So it is natural to ask if an inverse of this idea can be applied to lear…

Learning on point cloud is eagerly in demand because the point cloud is a common type of geometric data and can aid robots to understand environments robustly. However, the point cloud is sparse, unstructured, and unordered, which cannot be recognized accurately by a traditional convolutional neural network (CNN) nor a recurrent neural network (RNN). Fortunately, a graph convolutional neural network (Graph CNN) can process sparse and unordered data. Hence, we propose a linked dynamic graph CNN (LDGCNN) to classify and segment point cloud directly in this paper. We remove the transformation net…

Modern convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are able to achieve human-level object classification accuracy on specific tasks, and currently outperform competing models in explaining complex human visual representations. However, the categorization problem is posed differently for these networks than for humans: the accuracy of these networks is evaluated by their ability to identify single labels assigned to each image. Hierarchical feature learning based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) has recently shown significant potential in various computer vision tasks.
