Finding a template in a search image is an important task underlying many computer vision applications. Recent approaches perform template matching in a deep feature-space, produced by a convolutional neural network (CNN), which is found to provide more tolerance to changes in appearance. In this article we investigate if enhancing the CNN's encoding of shape information can produce more distinguishable features that improve the performance of template matching. This investigation results in a new template matching method that produces state-of-the-art results on a standard benchmark. To confirm these results we also create a new benchmark and show that the proposed method also outperforms existing techniques on this new dataset. Our code and dataset is available at: https://github.com/iminfine/Deep-DIM.
We present a novel deep architecture termed templateNet for depth based object instance recognition. Using an intermediate template layer we exploit prior knowledge of an object's shape to sparsify the feature maps. This has three advantages: (i) the network is better regularised resulting in structured filters; (ii) the sparse feature maps results in intuitive features been learnt which can be visualized as the output of the template layer and (iii) the resulting network achieves state-of-the-art performance. The network benefits from this without any additional parametrization from the templ…
Just like its remarkable achievements in many computer vision tasks, the convolutional neural networks (CNN) provide an end-to-end solution in handwritten Chinese character recognition (HCCR) with great success. However, the process of learning discriminative features for image recognition is difficult in cases where little data is available. In this paper, we propose a novel method for learning siamese neural network which employ a special structure to predict the similarity between handwritten Chinese characters and template images. The optimization of siamese neural network can be treated a…
Recent convolutional neural network (CNN) development continues to advance the state-of-the-art model accuracy for various applications. However, the enhanced accuracy comes at the cost of substantial memory bandwidth and storage requirements and demanding computational resources. Although in the past the quantization methods have effectively reduced the deployment cost for edge devices, it suffers from significant information loss when processing the biased activations of contemporary CNNs. In this paper, we hence introduce an adaptive high-performance quantization method to resolve the issue…

In this paper, we construct and provide a dataset with a method of training patches retrieval. We prove the effectiveness of this data by training a lightweight neural network and show how it performs in both documents and general patches matching. The training was done on …

For this purpose two loss functions, compactness loss and descriptiveness loss are proposed along with a parallel CNN architecture. A template matching-based framework is introduced to facilitate the testing process. Extensive experiments on publicly available anomaly detection, novelt…

We attempt to interpret how adversarially trained convolutional neural networks (AT-CNNs) recognize objects. We design systematic approaches to interpret AT-CNNs in both qualitative and quantitative ways and compare them with normally trained models. Surprisingly, we find that adversarial training alleviates the texture bias of standard CNNs when trained on object recognition tasks, and helps CNNs learn a more shape-biased representation. We validate our hypothesis from two aspects. First, we compare the salience maps of AT-CNNs and standard CNNs on clean images and images under different tran…

The convolutional neural networks (CNN), including AlexNet, GoogleNet, VGGNet, etc. extract features for many computer vision problems which are very discriminative. The trained CNN model over one dataset performs reasonably well whereas on another dataset of similar type the hand-designed feature descriptor outperforms the same trained CNN model. The Rectified Linear Unit (ReLU) layer discards some values in order to introduce the non-linearity. In this paper, it is proposed that the discriminative ability of deep image representation using trained model can be improved by Average Biased ReLU…

A myriad of recent breakthroughs in hand-crafted neural architectures for visual recognition have highlighted the urgent need to explore hybrid architectures consisting of diversified building blocks. Meanwhile, neural architecture search methods are surging with an expectation to reduce human efforts. However, whether NAS methods can efficiently and effectively handle diversified search spaces with disparate candidates (e.g. CNNs and transformers) is still an open question. In this work, we present Block-wisely Self-supervised Neural Architecture Search (BossNAS), an unsupervised NAS method t…
Generating synchronized and natural lip movement with speech is one of the most important tasks in creating realistic virtual characters. In this paper, we present a combined deep neural network of one-dimensional convolutions and LSTM to generate vertex displacement of a 3D template face model from variable-length speech input. The motion of the lower part of the face, which is represented by the vertex movement of 3D lip shapes, is consistent with the input speech. In order to enhance the robustness of the network to different sound signals, we adapt a trained speech recognition model to ext…

In this work, the human parsing task, namely decomposing a human image into semantic fashion/body regions, is formulated as an Active Template Regression (ATR) problem, where the normalized mask of each fashion/body item is expressed as the linear combination of the learned mask templates, and then morphed to a more precise mask with the active shape parameters, including position, scale and visibility of each semantic region. The mask template coefficients and the active shape parameters together can generate the human parsing results, and are thus called the structure outputs for human parsi…
The use of hand gestures can be a useful tool for many applications in the human-computer interaction community. In a broad range of areas hand gesture techniques can be applied specifically in sign language recognition, robotic surgery, etc. In the process of hand gesture recognition, proper detection, and tracking of the moving hand become challenging due to the varied shape and size of the hand. Here the objective is to track the movement of the hand irrespective of the shape, size, and color of the hand. And, for this, a motion template guided by optical flow (OFMT) is proposed. OFMT is a …

With an aim to increase the capture range and accelerate the performance of state-of-the-art inter-subject and subject-to-template 3D registration, we propose deep learning-based methods that are trained to find the 3D position of arbitrarily oriented subjects or anatomy based on slices or volumes of medical images. For this, we propose regression CNNs that learn to predict the angle-axis representation of 3D rotations and translations using image features. We use and compare mean square error and geodesic loss to train regression CNNs for 3D pose estimation used in two different scenarios: sl…
Increasing number of filters in deeper layers when feature maps are decreased is a widely adopted pattern in convolutional network design. It can be found in classical CNN architectures and in automatic discovered models. Even CNS methods commonly explore a selection of multipliers derived from this pyramidal pattern. We defy this practice by introducing a small set of templates consisting of easy to implement, intuitive and aggressive variations of the original pyramidal distribution of filters in VGG and ResNet architectures. Experiments on CIFAR, CINIC10 and TinyImagenet datasets show that …

Loss functions play a key role in training superior deep neural networks. In convolutional neural networks (CNNs), the popular cross entropy loss together with softmax does not explicitly guarantee minimization of intra-class variance or maximization of inter-class variance. In the early studies, there is no theoretical analysis and experiments explicitly indicating how to choose the number of units in fully connected layer. To help CNNs learn features more fast and discriminative, there are two contributions in this paper. First, we determine the minimum number of units in FC layer by rigorou…
Compressed sensing for magnetic resonance imaging (CS-MRI) exploits image sparsity properties to reconstruct MRI from very few Fourier k-space measurements. The goal is to minimize any structural errors in the reconstruction that could have a negative impact on its diagnostic quality. To this end, we propose a deep error correction network (DECN) for CS-MRI. The DECN model consists of three parts, which we refer to as modules: a guide, or template, module, an error correction module, and a data fidelity module. Existing CS-MRI algorithms can serve as the template module for guiding the reconst…

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are commonly thought to recognise objects by learning increasingly complex representations of object shapes. Some recent studies suggest a more important role of image textures. We here put these conflicting hypotheses to a quantitative test by evaluating CNNs and human observers on images with a texture-shape cue conflict. We show that ImageNet-trained CNNs are strongly biased towards recognising textures rather than shapes, which is in stark contrast to human behavioural evidence and reveals fundamentally different classification strategies. We then demon…

Computer tomography (CT) have been routinely used for the diagnosis of lung diseases and recently, during the pandemic, for detecting the infectivity and severity of COVID-19 disease. One of the major concerns in using ma-chine learning (ML) approaches for automatic processing of CT scan images in clinical setting is that these methods are trained on limited and biased sub-sets of publicly available COVID-19 data. This has raised concerns regarding the generalizability of these models on external datasets, not seen by the model during training. To address some of these issues, in this work CT …

Binarization is an attractive strategy for implementing lightweight Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Inspired by the ensemble learning theory, it consists of a compact topology that is end-to-end trainable and organized to minimize memory utilization. Experimental results collected …
In this paper we present a framework for secure identification using deep neural networks, and apply it to the task of template protection for face authentication. We use deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to learn a mapping from face images to maximum entropy binary (MEB) codes. The mapping is robust enough to tackle the problem of exact matching, yielding the same code for new samples of a user as the code assigned during training. These codes are then hashed using any hash function that follows the random oracle model (like SHA-512) to generate protected face templates (similar to te…

There is an emerging sense that the vulnerability of Image Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), i.e., sensitivity to image corruptions, perturbations, and adversarial attacks, is connected with Texture Bias. This relative lack of Shape Bias is also responsible for poor performance in Domain Generalization (DG). The inclusion of a role of shape alleviates these vulnerabilities and some approaches have achieved this by training on negative images, images endowed with edge maps, or images with conflicting shape and texture information. This paper advocates an explicit and complete representation …

Template matching is a classic and fundamental method used to score similarities between objects using certain mathematical algorithms. In this paper, we reviewed the basic concept of matching, as well as advances in template matching and applications such as invariant features or novel applications in medical image analysis. Additionally, deformable models and templates originating from classic template matching were discussed. These models have …

Neonatal pain assessment in clinical environments is challenging as it is discontinuous and biased. Facial/body occlusion can occur in such settings due to clinical condition, developmental delays, prone position, or other external factors. In such cases, crying sound can be used to effectively assess neonatal pain. In this paper, we address the problem of camera pose estimation in outdoor and indoor scenarios. In comparison to the currently top-performing methods that rely on 2D to 3D matching, we propose a model that can directly regress the camera pose from images with significantly higher accuracy than existing methods of the same class. We first analyse why regression methods are still behind the state-of-the-art, and we bridge the performance gap with our new approach. Specifically, we propose a way to overcome the biased training data by a novel training technique, which generates poses guided by a…

Contrasting the previous evidence that neurons in the later layers of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) respond to complex object shapes, recent studies have shown that CNNs actually exhibit a `texture bias': given an image with both texture and shape cues (e.g., a stylized image), a CNN is biased towards predicting the category corresponding to the texture. However, these previous studies conduct experiments on the final classification output of the network, and fail to robustly evaluate the bias contained (i) in the latent representations, and (ii) on a per-pixel level. In this paper, we …

However, the image processing mechanism of VTs is different from that of conventional CNNs. This poses several questions about their generalizability, robustness, reliability, and texture bias when used to extract features for complex tasks. To address the…

Deep learning has been successfully applied to several problems related to autonomous driving. Often, these solutions rely on large networks that require databases of real image samples of the problem (i.e., real world) for proper training. The acquisition of such real-world data sets is not always possible in the autonomous driving context, and sometimes their annotation is not feasible (e.g., takes too long or is too expensive). Moreover, in many tasks, there is an intrinsic data imbalance that most learning-based methods struggle to cope with. It turns out that traffic sign detection is a p…
Recent evidence shows that convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are biased towards textures so that CNNs are non-robust to adversarial perturbations over textures, while traditional robust visual features like SIFT (scale-invariant feature transforms) are designed to be robust across a substantial range of affine distortion, addition of noise, etc with the mimic of human perception nature. This paper aims to leverage good properties of SIFT to renovate CNN architectures towards better accuracy and robustness. We borrow the scale-space extreme value idea from SIFT, and propose extreme value pre…

We present To The Point (TTP), a method for reconstructing 3D objects from a single image using 2D to 3D correspondences learned from weak supervision. We recover a 3D shape from a 2D image by first regressing the 2D positions corresponding to the 3D template vertices and then jointly estimating a rigid camera transform and non-rigid template deformation that optimally explain the 2D positions through the 3D shape projection. By relying on 3D-2D correspondences we use a simple per-sample optimization problem to replace CNN-based regression of camera pose and non-rigid deformation and thereby o…

We propose to improve on graph convolution based approaches for human shape and pose estimation from monocular input, using pixel-aligned local image features. Given a single input color image, existing graph convolutional network (GCN) based techniques for human shape and pose estimation use a single convolutional neural network (CNN) generated global image feature appended to all mesh vertices equally to initialize the GCN stage, which transforms a template T-posed mesh into the target pose. In contrast, we propose for the first time the idea of using local image features per vertex. These f…

We propose an end-to-end ensemble method for person re-identification (ReID) to address the problem of overfitting in discriminative models. These models are known to converge easily, but they are biased to the training data in general and may produce a high model variance, which is known as overfitting. The ReID task is more prone to this problem due to the large discrepancy between training and test distributions. To address this problem, our proposed ensemble learning framework produces several diverse and accurate base learners in a single DenseNet. Since most of the costly dense blocks ar…

In recent years, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been applied successfully in many fields. However, such deep neural models are still regarded as black box in most tasks. One of the fundamental issues underlying this problem is understanding which features are most influential in image recognition tasks and how they are processed by CNNs. It is widely accepted that CNN models combine low-level features to form complex shapes until the object can be readily classified, however, several recent studies have argued that texture features are more important than other features. In this pap…
This paper addresses the problem of 3D human pose and shape estimation from a single image. Previous approaches consider a parametric model of the human body, SMPL, and attempt to regress the model parameters that give rise to a mesh consistent with image evidence. This parameter regression has been a very challenging task, with model-based approaches underperforming compared to nonparametric solutions in terms of pose estimation. In our work, we propose to relax this heavy reliance on the model's parameter space. We still retain the topology of the SMPL template mesh, but instead of predictin…

Background: Single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) has become a popular tool for structural determination of biological macromolecular complexes. High-resolution cryo-EM reconstruction often requires hundreds of thousands of single-particle images. Particle extraction from experimental micrographs thus can be laborious and presents a major practical bottleneck in cryo-EM structural determination. Existing computational methods of particle picking often use low-resolution templates as inputs for particle matching, making it possible to cause reference-dependent bias. It is critical …

The AOG is constructed in a weakly-supervised manner, i.e., very few annotations (e.g., 3-20) of object parts are used to guide the learning of A…
