Analogous to the Spin-Hall Effect (SHE), {\it ab initio} electronic structure calculations reveal that acoustic phonons can induce charge (spin) current flowing along (normal to) its propagation direction. Using Floquet approach we have calculated the elastodynamical-induced charge and spin pumping in bulk Pt and demonstrate that: (i) While the longitudinal charge pumping is an intrinsic observable, the transverse pumped spin-current has an extrinsic origin that depends strongly on the electronic relaxation time; (ii) The longitudinal charge current
is of nonrelativstic origin, while the transverse spin current is a relativistic effect that to lowest order scales linearly with the spin-orbit coupling strength; (iii) both charge and spin pumped currents have parabolic dependence on the amplitude of the elastic wave.
The topological pumping [1-3] is revisited from a view point of the bulk-edge correspondence. Shift of the center of mass (CM) as a pumped charge is explicitly given by the Berry connection in time direction. We show that observed pumping is due to the bulk, but its quantization is guaranteed by singular motion of the CM caused by edge states. This is the bulk-edge correspondence in the topological pumping. A gauge invariant form of the pumped charge is proposed by the temporal gauge and is used to establish this bulk-edge correspondence.
Recent experiments have studied the temperature and gate voltage dependence of nonlocal transport in bilayer graphene, identifying features thought to be associated with the two-dimensional semiconductor's bulk intrinsic valley Hall effect. Here, we use both simple microscopic tight-binding ribbon models and phenomenological bulk transport equations to emphasize the impact of sample edges on the nonlocal voltage signals. We show that the nonlocal valley Hall response is sensitive to electronic structure details at the sample edges, and that it is enhanced when the local longitudinal conductivi…
The dynamics of non-equilibrium spin accumulation generated in metals or semiconductors by rf magnetic field pumping is treated within a diffusive picture. The dc spin accumulation produced in a uniform system by a rotating applied magnetic field or by a precessing magnetization of a weak ferromagnet is in general given by a (small) fraction of hbar omega, where omega is the rotation or precession frequency. With the addition of a neighboring, field-free region and allowing for the diffusion of spins, the spin accumulation is dramatically enhanced at the interface, saturating at the universal …
Topological spintronics aims to exploit the spin-momentum locking in the helical surface states of topological insulators for spin-orbit torque devices. We address a fundamental question that still remains unresolved in this context: does the topological surface state alone produce the largest values of spin-charge conversion efficiency or can the strongly spin-orbit coupled bulk states also contribute significantly? By studying the Fermi level dependence of spin pumping in topological insulator/ferrimagnetic insulator bilayers, we show that the spin Hall conductivity is constant when the Ferm…
Topological insulators (TIs) are a new quantum state of matter discovered recently, which are characterized by unconventional bulk topological invariants. Proposals for practical applications of the TIs are mostly based upon their metallic surface or edge states. Here, we report the theoretical discovery of a bulk quantum pumping effect in a two-dimensional TI electrically modulated in adiabatic cycles. In each cycle, an amount of spin proportional to the sample width can be pumped into a nonmagnetic electrode, which is attributed to nonzero spin Chern numbers $C_{\pm}$. Moreover, by using a h…
Real-time evolution and charge pumping in magnetic Weyl semimetals are studied by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equations. In the adiabatic limit of the real-time evolution, we show that the total pumped charge is quantized in the magnetic Weyl semimetals as in the quantum Hall system although the Weyl semimetal has no bulk gap. We examine how the disorder affects the charge pumping. As a result, we show that the quantized pumped charge is robust against the small disorder and find that the pumped charge increases in the intermediate disorder region. We also examine the doping effects…
The notion of topological (Thouless) pumping in topological phases is traditionally associated with Laughlin's pump argument for the quantization of the Hall conductance in two-dimensional (2D) quantum Hall systems. It relies on magnetic flux variations that thread the system of interest without penetrating its bulk, in the spirit of Aharonov-Bohm effects. Here we explore a different paradigm for topological pumping induced, instead, by magnetic flux variations $δχ$ inserted through the bulk of topological phases. We show that $δχ$ generically controls the analog of a topological pump, accompa…
The features of phonon-magnon interconversion in acoustic resonator determine the efficiency of spin pumping from YIG into Pt that may be detected electrically through the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE). Based on the methods developed in previous works for calculating resonator structures with a piezoelectric (ZnO) and a magnetoelastic layer in contact with the heavy metal (YIG/Pt), we present the results of numerical calculations of YIG film thickness influence on acoustically driven spin waves. We obtain some YIG film thickness regions with various behavior of dc ISHE voltage $U_{ISHE}$. At…
The bulk-edge correspondence (BEC) refers to a one-to-one relation between the bulk and edge properties ubiquitous in topologically nontrivial systems. Depending on the setup, BEC manifests in different forms and govern the spectral and transport properties of topological insulators and semimetals. Although the topological pump is theoretically old, BEC in the pump has been established just recently [1] motivated by the state-of-the-art experiments using cold atoms [2,3]. The center of mass (CM) of a system with boundaries shows a sequence of quantized jumps in the adiabatic limit associated w…
We develop a time-dependent nonequilibrium Green function (NEGF) approach to the problem of spin pumping by precessing magnetization in one of the ferromagnetic layers within F/I/F magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) or F/I/N semi-MTJs in the presence of intrinsic Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) at the F/I interface or the extrinsic SOC in the bulk of F layers of finite thickness (F-ferromagnet; N-normal metal; I-insulating barrier). To express the time-averaged pumped charge current, or the corresponding dc voltage signal in open circuits that was measured in recent experiments on semi-MTJs [T.…
Spin pumping is the emission of a spin current by a magnetization dynamics while spin transfer stands for the excitation of magnetization by spin currents. Using Onsager's reciprocity relations we prove that spin pumping and spin-transfer torques are two fundamentally equivalent dynamic processes in magnetic structures with itinerant electrons. We review the theory of the coupled motion of the magnetization order parameter and electron for textured bulk ferromagnets (e.g. containing domain walls) and heterostructures (such as spin valves). We present first-principles calculations for the mater…
We report on the experimental observation of excitation and detection of parametric spin waves and spin currents in the bulk acoustic wave resonator. The hybrid resonator consists of ZnO piezoelectric film, yttrium iron garnet (YIG) films on gallium gadolinium garnet substrate, and a heavy metal Pt layer. Shear bulk acoustic waves are electrically excited in the ZnO layer due to piezoeffect at the resonant frequencies of the resonator. The magnetoelastic interaction in the YIG film emerges magnons (spin waves) excitation by acoustic waves either on resonator's eigenfrequencies or the half-valu…
A topological pump enables robust transport of quantized particles when the system parameters are varied in a cyclic process. In previous studies, topological pump was achieved inhomogeneous systems guaranteed by a topological invariant of the bulk band structure when time is included as an additional synthetic dimension. Recently, bulk-boundary correspondence has been generalized to the bulk-disclination correspondence, describing the emergence of topological bounded states in the crystallographic defects protected by the bulk topology. Here we show the topological pumping can happen between …
Spin pumping refers to the microwave-driven spin current injection from a ferromagnet into the adjacent target material. We theoretically investigate the spin pumping into superconductors by fully taking account of impurity spin-orbit scattering that is indispensable to describe diffusive spin transport with finite spin diffusion length. We calculate temperature dependence of the spin pumping signal and show that a pronounced coherence peak appears immediately below the superconducting transition temperature Tc, which survives even in the presence of the spin-orbit scattering. The phenomenon p…
We propose an experimental scheme to realize adiabatic topological spin and valley pumping by using silicene subject to an in-plane $ac$ electric field with amplitude $E_{y}$ and a vertical electric field consisting of an electrostatic component and an $ac$ component with amplitudes $E_{z}^{0}$ and $E_{z}^{1}$. By tuning $E_{z}^{0}$ and $E_{z}^{1}$, topological valley pumping or spin-valley pumping can be achieved. The noisefree valley and spin currents generated could be useful in valleytronic and spintronic applications. This work demonstrates that bulk topological spin or valley pumping is …
We study the quantized charge pumping of higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) with edge-corner correspondences based on the combination of the rotation of in-plane magnetic field and the quantum spin Hall effect. A picture of a specific charge pumping process is uncovered with the help of the non-equilibrium Green's function method. Significantly, we demonstrate that the quantized charge pumping current is achieved without the participation of bulk states, and the charges move along the boundary of the sample. Furthermore, the effects of external parameters on the pumping current is als…
A Thouless pump can be regarded as a dynamical version of the integer quantum Hall effect. In a finite-size configuration, such topological pump displays edge modes that emerge dynamically from one bulk-band and dive into the opposite bulk-band, an effect that can be reproduced with both quantum and classical systems. Here, we report the first un-assisted dynamic energy transfer across a metamaterial, via pumping of such topological edge modes. The system is a topological aperiodic acoustic crystal, with a phason that can be fast and periodically driven in adiabatic cycles. When one edge of th…
Detection and manipulation of electrons' spins are key prerequisites for spin-based electronics or spintronics. This is usually achieved by contacting ferromagnets with metals or semiconductors, in which the relaxation of spins due to spin-orbit coupling limits both the efficiency and the length scale. In topological insulator materials, on the contrary, the spin-orbit coupling is so strong that the spin direction uniquely determines the current direction, which allows us to conceive a whole new scheme for spin detection and manipulation. Nevertheless, even the most basic process, the spin inj…
Based on spin-dependent transport theory and thermodynamics, we develop a generalized theory of the Joule heating in the presence of a spin current. Along with the conventional Joule heating consisting of an electric current and electrochemical potential, it is found that the spin current and spin accumulation give an additional dissipation because the spin-dependent scatterings inside bulk and ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic interface lead to a change of entropy. The theory is applied to investigate the dissipation due to pure spin-current generated by spin pumping across a ferromagnetic/nonmagneti…
In this paper, we study the localized states of a generic quadratic fermionic chain with finite-range couplings and an inhomogeneity in the hopping (defect) that breaks translational invariance. When the hopping of the defect vanishes, which represents an open chain, we obtain a simple bulk-edge correspondence: the zero-energy modes localized at the ends of the chain are related to the roots of a polynomial determined by the couplings of the Hamiltonian of the bulk. From this result, we define an index that characterizes the different topological phases of the system and can be easily computed…
The insertion of a local magnetic flux, as the one created by a thin solenoid, plays an important role in gedanken experiments of quantum Hall physics. By combining Floquet engineering of artificial magnetic fields with the ability of single-site addressing in quantum-gas microscopes, we propose a scheme for the realization of such local solenoid-type magnetic fields in optical lattices. We show that it can be employed to manipulate and probe elementary excitations of a topological Chern insulator. This includes quantized adiabatic charge pumping along tailored paths inside the bulk, as well a…
The phenomenon of charge pumping and the modern theory of electric polarization are reconsidered by analytically taking into account emergent non-Hermitian contributions. These are accounted for through the use of an extended definition of the velocity operator and are determined by means of a dynamic Hellmann-Feynman theorem (DHFT) that we derive here for the first time. The DHFT introduces generalized Berry curvatures and it is valid for calculating observables nonperturbatively, hence with results valid to all orders of the external fields. By using the extended velocity operator we rigorou…
We show that the spin-lattice relaxation in n-type insulating GaAs is dramatically accelerated at low magnetic fields. The origin of this effect, that cannot be explained in terms of well-known diffusion-limited hyperfine relaxation, is found in the quadrupole relaxation, induced by fluctuating donor charges. Therefore, quadrupole relaxation, that governs low field nuclear spin relaxation in semiconductor quantum dots, but was so far supposed to be harmless to bulk nuclei spins in the absence of optical pumping can be studied and harnessed in much simpler model environment of n-GaAs bulk cryst…
The generation of valley current is a fundamental goal in graphene valleytronics but no practical ways of its realization are known yet. We propose a workable scheme for the generation of bulk valley current in a graphene mechanical resonator through adiabatic cyclic deformations of the strains and chemical potential in the suspended region. The accompanied strain gauge fields can break the spatial mirror symmetry of the problem within each of the two inequivalent valleys, leading to a fnite valley current due to quantum pumping. An all-electrical measurement configuration is designed to detec…
We investigated the dependence of the seed [Ta/Pt, Ta/Au] and capping [Pt/Ta, Au/Ta] layers on spin pumping effect in the ferromagnetic 3 nm thick Co thin film using ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The data is fitted with Kittel equation to evaluate damping constant and g-factor. A strong dependence of seed and capping layers on spin pumping has been discussed. The value of damping constant {alpha} is found to be relatively large i.e. 0.0326 for the Ta{3}/Pt{3}/Co{3}/Pt{3}/Ta{3} {nm} multi-layer structure, while it is 0.0104 for Ta{3}/Co{3}/Ta{3} {nm}. Increase in {alpha} is observed due…
By means of time-resolved optical orientation under strong optical pumping, the k-dependence of the electron spin-flip time (t_sf) in undoped GaAs is experimentally determined. t_sf monotonically decreases by more than one order of magnitude when the electron kinetic energy varies from 2 to 30 meV. At the high excitation densities and low temperatures of the reported experiments the main spin-flip mechanism of the conduction band electrons is the Bir-Aronov-Pikus. By means of Monte-Carlo simulations we evidence that phase-space filling effects result in the blocking of the spin flip, yielding …
Magnetic insulators are promising materials for the development of energy-efficient spintronics. Unlike metallic counterparts, the magnetic insulators are characterized by imaginary part of the interfacial spin mixing conductance as well in a bilayer with heavy metals and it is responsible for the field-like toque in spin-orbit torque devices. Here, we study the underlying theoretical constructs and develop a general strategy to determine the complex spin mixing conductance from the experimental results of ferromagnetic resonance and spin pumping. The results show that the imaginary part of th…
When adiabatically varied in time, certain one-dimensional band insulators allow for the quantized noiseless pumping of spin even in the presence of strong spin orbit scattering. These spin pumps are closely related to the quantum spin Hall system, and their properties are protected by a time-reversal restriction on the pumping cycle. In this paper we study pumps formed of one-dimensional insulators with a time-reversal restriction on the pumping cycle and a bulk energy gap which arises due to interactions. We find that the correlated gapped phase can lead to novel pumping properties. In parti…
Recent studies indicated that helical organic molecules, such as DNA and $α$-helical protein, can behave as Thouless quantum pumps when a rotating electric field is applied perpendicularly to their helical axes. Here we investigate the influence of long-range hoppings on this topological pumping of electrons in single-helical organic molecules. Under variation of the long-range hoppings governed by a decay exponent $μ$, we find an energy gap in the molecular band structure closes at a critical value $μ_c$ of the decay exponent and reopens for $μ$ deviating from $μ_c$. The relevant bulk bands i…
We have investigated spin-electricity conversion on surface states of bulk-insulating topological insulator (TI) materials using a spin pumping technique. The sample structure is Ni-Fe|Cu|TI trilayers, in which magnetic proximity effects on the TI surfaces are negligibly small owing to the inserted Cu layer. Voltage signals produced by the spin-electricity conversion are clearly observed, and enhanced with decreasing temperature in line with the dominated surface transport at lower temperatures. The efficiency of the spin-electricity conversion is greater for TI samples with higher resistivity…
We report hyperpolarization of the electronic spins associated with substitutional nitrogen defects in bulk diamond crystal. Hyperpolarization is achieved by optical pumping of nitrogen vacancy centers followed by rapid cross relaxation at the energy level matching condition in a 51 mT bias field. The maximum observed donor spin polarization is 0.9 \% corresponding to an enhancement by 25 compared to the thermal Boltzmann polarization. A further accumulation of polarization is impeded by an anomalous optical saturation effect that we attribute to charge state conversion processes. Hyperpolariz…
We study the recently introduced ${\mathbb Z}_2$ pump consisting of a family of one-dimensional bulk insulators with time reversal restriction on the pumping cycle. We find that the scattering matrices of these pumps are dichotomized by a topological index. We show that the class of pumps characterized by a nontrivial topological index allows, in contrast to its topologically trivial counterpart, for the noiseless pumping of quantized spin, even in the absence of spin conservation. This distinction sheds light on the ${\mathbb Z}_2$ classification of two-dimensional time reversal invariant ins…
We develop a self-consistent theory for current-induced spin wave excitations in normal metal-magnetic insulator bilayer systems, thereby establishing the relation between spin wave excitation and the experimentally controlled parameters. We fully take into account the complex spin wave spectrum including dipolar interactions and surface anisotropy as well as the spin-pumping at the interface. Our results focus on the mode-dependent power close to the critical currents for spin wave excitation. The major findings are (a) the spin transfer torque can excite different spin-wave modes simultaneou…
We propose a electron-pumping mechanism called Chern pump to explain the integer quantum Hall effect(IQHE) in the Chern insulator. By using the parallel transport gauge in the hybrid Wannier representation we establish the bulk and edge states correspondence in the Chern insulator. The same correspondence can also be established in two dimensional(2D) topological insulator(TI). So we can consider 2D TI as two time reversal(TR) related CIs put together. The quantum spin Hall effect(QSHE) can be viewed as two TR related Chern pumps pumping electrons to opposite directions. Compared with the Z2 s…
When a two-dimensional electron gas is exposed to a perpendicular magnetic field and an in-plane electric field, its conductance becomes quantized in the transverse in-plane direction: this is known as the quantum Hall (QH) effect. This effect is a result of the nontrivial topology of the system's electronic band structure, where an integer topological invariant known as the first Chern number leads to the quantization of the Hall conductance. Interestingly, it was shown that the QH effect can be generalized mathematically to four spatial dimensions (4D), but this effect has never been realize…
Shift current---a photocurrent induced by light irradiating noncentrosymmetric materials in the absence of any bias voltage or built-in electric field---is one of the mechanisms of the so-called bulk photovoltaic effect. It has been traditionally described as a nonlinear optical response of periodic solids to continuous wave light using a perturbative formula, which is linear in the intensity of light and which involves Berry connection describing the shift in the center of mass position of the Wannier wave function associated with the transition between the valence and conduction bands. We an…
We report on the self-consisted semi-analytical theory of magnetoelastic excitation and electrical detection of spin waves and spin currents in hypersonic bulk acoustic waves resonator with ZnO-GGG-YIG/Pt layered structure. Electrical detection of acoustically driven spin waves occurs due to spin pumping from YIG to Pt and inverse spin Hall (ISHE) effect in Pt as well as due to electrical response of ZnO piezotransducer. The frequency-field dependences of the resonator frequencies and ISHE voltage $U_{ISHE}$ are correlated with experimental ones observed previously. Their fitting allows to det…
We propose a multiterminal nanostructure for electrical probing of the quantum spin Hall effect (QSHE) in two-dimensional (2D) topological insulators. The device consists of a ferromagnetic (FM) island with precessing magnetization that pumps (in the absence of any bias voltage) pure spin current symmetrically into the left and right adjacent 2D TIs modeled as graphene nanoribbons with the intrinsic spin-orbit (SO) coupling. The QSH regime of the six-terminal TI|FM|TI nanodevice, attached to two longitudinal and four transverse normal metal electrodes, is characterized by the SO-coupling-induc…
We develop an analytical theory of the low-frequency $ac$ quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect based upon the scattering matrix formalism. It is shown that the $ac$ QSH effect can be interpreted as a bulk quantum pumping effect. When the electron spin is conserved, the integer-quantized $ac$ spin Hall conductivity can be linked to the winding numbers of the reflection matrices in the electrodes, which also equal to the bulk spin Chern numbers of the QSH material. Furthermore, a possible experimental scheme by using ferromagnetic metals as electrodes is proposed to detect the topological $ac$ spin cu…
