In dynamical systems, basins of attraction connect a given set of initial conditions in phase space to their asymptotic states. The basin entropy and related tools quantify the unpredictability in the final state of a system when there is an initial perturbation or uncertainty in the initial state. Based on the basin entropy, the $\ln 2$ criterion allows for efficient testing of fractal basin boundaries at a fixed resolution. Here, we extend this criterion into a new test with improved sensitivity that we call the \textit{$S_{bb}$ fractality test}. Using the same single scale information, the $S_{bb}$ fractality test allows for the detection of fractal boundaries in many more cases than the $\ln 2$ criterion. The new test is illustrated with the paradigmatic driven Duffing oscillator, and the results are compared with the classical approach given by the uncertainty exponent. We believe that this work can prove particularly useful to study both high-dimensional systems and experimental basins of attraction.
Fluctuational transitions between two co-existing chaotic attractors, separated by a fractal basin boundary, are studied in a discrete dynamical system. It is shown that the mechanism for such transitions is determined by a hierarchy of homoclinic points. The most probable escape path from the chaotic attractor to the fractal boundary is found using both statistical analyses of fluctuational trajectories and the Hamiltonian theory of fluctuations.
A discussion about dependences of the (fractal) basin boundary dimension with the definition of the basins and the size of the exits is presented for systems with one or more exits. In particular, it is shown that the dimension is largely independent of the choice of the basins, and decreases with the size of the exits. Considering the limit of small exits, a strong relation between fractals in exit systems and chaos in closed systems is found. The discussion is illustrated by simple examples of one-dimensional maps.
The basins of convergence, associated with the roots (attractors) of a complex equation, are revealed in the Hill problem with oblateness and radiation, using a large variety of numerical methods. Three cases are investigated, regarding the values of the oblateness and radiation. In all cases, a systematic and thorough scan of the complex plane is performed in order to determine the basins of attraction of the several iterative schemes. The correlations between the attracting domains and the corresponding required number of iterations are also illustrated and discussed. Our numerical analysis …
Basins generated by a noninvertible mapping formed by two symmetrically coupled logistic maps are studied when the only parameter λof the system is modified. Complex patterns on the plane are visualised as a consequence of basins' bifurcations. According to the already established nomenclature in the literature, we present the relevant phenomenology organised in different scenarios: fractal islands disaggregation, finite disaggregation, infinitely disconnected basin, infinitely many converging sequences of lakes, countable self-similar disaggregation and sharp fractal boundary. By use of criti…
Stability assessment methods for dynamical systems have recently been complemented by basin stability and derived measures, i.e. probabilistic statements whether systems remain in a basin of attraction given a distribution of perturbations. This requires numerical estimation via Monte-Carlo sampling and integration of differential equations. Here, we analyze the applicability of basin stability to systems with basin geometries challenging for this numerical method, having fractal basin boundaries and riddled or intermingled basins of attraction. We find that numerical basin stability estimatio…
In Physics, we have laws that determine the time evolution of a given physical system, depending on its parameters and its initial conditions. When we have multi-stable systems, many attractors coexist so that their basins of attraction might possess fractal or even Wada boundaries in such a way that the prediction becomes more complicated depending on the initial conditions. Chaotic systems typically present fractal basins in phase space. A small uncertainty in the initial conditions gives rise to a certain unpredictability of the final state behavior. The new notion of basin entropy provides…
The Newton-Raphson basins of convergence, corresponding to the coplanar libration points (which act as attractors), are unveiled in the Copenhagen problem, where instead of the Newtonian potential and forces, a quasi-homogeneous potential created by two primaries is considered. The multivariate version of the Newton-Raphson iterative scheme is used to reveal the attracting domain associated with the libration points on various type of two-dimensional configuration planes. The correlations between the basins of convergence and the corresponding required number of iterations are also presented a…
The escape dynamics in a two-dimensional multiwell potential is explored. A thorough numerical investigation is conducted in several types of two-dimensional planes and also in a three-dimensional subspace of the entire four-dimensional phase space in order to distinguish between non-escaping (ordered and chaotic) and escaping orbits. The determination of the location of the basins of escape towards the different escape channels and their correlations with the corresponding escape time of the orbits is undoubtedly an issue of paramount importance. It was found that in all examined cases region…
This article aims to investigate the points of equilibrium and the associated convergence basins in a seventh-order generalized Hénon-Heiles potential. Using the well-known Newton-Raphson iterator we numerically locate the position of the points of equilibrium, while we also obtain their linear stability. Furthermore, we demonstrate how the two variable parameters, entering the generalized Hénon-Heiles potential, affect the convergence dynamics of the system as well as the fractal degree of the basin diagrams. The fractal degree is derived by computing the (boundary) basin entropy as well as t…
This report unravels frustration as a source of transient chaotic dynamics even in a simple array of coupled limit cycle oscillators. The transient chaotic dynamics along with the multistable nature of frustrated systems facilitates the existence of complex basin structures such as fractal and riddled basins. In particular, we report the emergence of transient chaotic dynamics around the chaotic itinerancy region, where the basin of attraction near the chaotic region is riddled and it becomes fractal basin when we move away from this region. Normally the complex basin structures are observed o…
The present paper investigates the binary system of quasars in the framework of the Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem. The parametric evolution of libration points, the geometry of zero-velocity curves are one of the crucial aspects of our study. The multivariate form of NR method is applied to study the basin of attraction connected with libration points. The algorithm for using the Newton-Raphson method is slightly modified in order to avoid the unnecessary delay in the convergence of initial conditions. The impact of parameters on the shape of the basin of attraction and the number of …
Two-dimensional maps can model interactions between populations. Despite their simplicity, these dynamical systems can show some complex situations, as multistability or fractal boundaries between basins that lead to remarkable pictures. Some of them are shown and explained here for three different 2D discrete models.
We analyze situations where a saddle-node bifurcation occurs on a fractal basin boundary. Specifically, we are interested in what happens when a system parameter is slowly swept in time through the bifurcation. Such situations are known to be indeterminate in the sense that it is difficult to predict the eventual fate of an orbit that tracks the pre-bifurcation node attractor as the system parameter is swept through the bifurcation. In this paper we investigate the scaling of (1) the fractal basin boundary of the static (i.e., unswept) system near the saddle-node bifurcation, (2) the dependenc…
An intriguing and unexpected result for students learning numerical analysis is that Newton's method, applied to the simple polynomial z^3 - 1 = 0 in the complex plane, leads to intricately interwoven basins of attraction of the roots. As an example of an interesting open question that may help to stimulate student interest in numerical analysis, we investigate the question of whether a damping method, which is designed to increase the likelihood of convergence for Newton's method, modifies the fractal structure of the basin boundaries. The overlap of the frontiers of numerical analysis and no…
We investigate the dynamics in the close vicinity of and within the critical area in a 2D effective galactic potential with a bar of Zotos. We have calculated Poincaré surfaces of section and the basins of escape. In both the Poincaré surfaces of section and the basins of escape we find numerical evidence for the existence of a separatrix which hinders orbits from escaping out of the bar region. We present numerical evidence for the similarity between spiral arms of barred spiral galaxies and tidal tails of star clusters.
In the framework of photogravitational version of the restricted five-body problem, the existence and stability of the in-plane equilibrium points, the possible regions for motion are explored and analysed numerically, under the combined effect of small perturbations in the Coriolis and centrifugal forces. Moreover, the multivariate version of the Newton-Raphson iterative scheme is applied in an attempt to unveil the topology of the basins of convergence linked with the libration points as function of radiation parameters, and the parameters corresponding to Coriolis and centrifugal forces.
This paper considers effect of nonlinear dissipation on the basin boundaries of a driven two-well Modified Rayleigh-Duffing Oscillator where pure and unpure quadratic and cubic nonlinearities are considered. By analyzing the potential, an analytic expression is found for the homoclinic orbit. The Melnikov criterion is used to examine a global homoclinic bifurcation and transition to chaos in the case of our oscillator. It is found the effects of unpure quadratic parameter and amplitude of parametric excitation on the critical Melnikov amplitude $μ_{cr}$. Finally, we examine carefully the phase…
Fractal basin structure in the two-dimensional dissipative circle map is examined in detail. Numerically obtained basin appears to be riddling in the parameter region where two periodic orbits co-exist near a boundary crisis, but it is shown to consist of layers of thin bands.
In nonlinear dynamics, basins of attraction link a given set of initial conditions to its corresponding final states. This notion appears in a broad range of applications where several outcomes are possible, which is a common situation in neuroscience, economy, astronomy, ecology and many other disciplines. Depending on the nature of the basins, prediction can be difficult even in systems that evolve under deterministic rules. From this respect, a proper classification of this unpredictability is clearly required. To address this issue, we introduce the basin entropy, a measure to quantify thi…
In the present work, the Newton-Raphson basins of convergence, corresponding to the coplanar libration points (which act as numerical attractors), are unveiled in the axisymmetric five-body problem, where convex configuration is considered. In particular, the four primaries are set in axisymmetric central configuration, where the motion is governed only by mutual gravitational attractions. It is observed that the total number libration points are either eleven, thirteen or fifteen for different combination of the angle parameters. Moreover, the stability analysis revealed that the all the libr…
Traditional studies of chaos in conservative and driven dissipative systems have established a correspondence between sensitive dependence on initial conditions and fractal basin boundaries, but much less is known about the relation between geometry and dynamics in undriven dissipative systems. These systems can exhibit a prevalent form of complex dynamics, dubbed doubly transient chaos because not only typical trajectories but also the (otherwise invariant) chaotic saddles are transient. This property, along with a manifest lack of scale invariance, has hindered the study of the geometric pro…
The present work deals with the recently introduced restricted six body-problem with square configuration. It is determined that the total number of libration points are twelve and twenty for the mass parameter $0< μ< 0.25$. The multivariate form of Newton-Raphson scheme is used to discuss the basin of attraction. Different aspects of the basin of attraction are investigated and explained in detail. The complex combination of the different basins is found along the boundaries. The concept of basin entropy is used to unveil the nature of the boundaries. For $μ= 0.22$ and $0.23$, the basin of at…
The basin entropy is a simple idea that aims to measure the the final state unpredictability of multistable systems. Since 2016, the basin entropy has been widely used in different contexts of physics, from cold atoms to galactic dynamics. Furthermore, it has provided a natural framework to study basins of attraction in nonlinear dynamics and new criteria for the detection of fractal boundaries. In this article, we describe the concept as well as fundamental applications. In addition, we provide our perspective on the future challenges of applying the basin entropy idea to understanding comple…
The orbital dynamics of a spacecraft, or a comet, or an asteroid in the Earth-Moon system in a scattering region around the Moon using the three dimensional version of the circular restricted three-body problem is numerically investigated. The test particle can move in bounded orbits around the Moon or escape through the openings around the Lagrange points $L_1$ and $L_2$ or even collide with the surface of the Moon. We explore in detail the first four of the five possible Hill's regions configurations depending on the value of the Jacobi constant which is of course related with the total orbi…
We investigate the basin of attraction properties and its boundaries for chimera states in a circulant network of Hénon maps. Chimera states, for which coherent and incoherent domains coexist, emerge as a consequence of the coexistence of basin of attractions for each state. It is known that the coexisting basins of attraction lead to a hysteretic behaviour in the diagrams for the density of incoherent and coherent states as a function of a varying parameter. Consequently, the distribution of chimera states can remain invariant by a parameter change, as well as it can suffer subtle changes whe…
First conceived as a topological construction, Wada basins abound in dynamical systems. Basins of attraction showing the Wada property possess the particular feature that any small perturbation of an initial condition lying on the boundary can lead the system to any of its possible outcomes. The saddle-straddle method, described here, is a new method to identify the Wada property in a dynamical system based on the computation of its chaotic saddle in the fractalized phase space. It consists of finding the chaotic saddle embedded in the boundary between the basin of one attractor and the remain…
Chaotic scattering in open Hamiltonian systems is a topic of fundamental interest in physics, which has been mainly studied in the purely conservative case. However, the effect of weak perturbations in this kind of systems has been an important focus of interest in the last decade. In a previous work, the authors studied the effects of a periodic forcing in the decay law of the survival probability, and they characterized the global properties of escape dynamics. In the present paper, we add two important issues in the effects of periodic forcing: the fractal dimension of the set of singularit…
The escape dynamics in a simple analytical gravitational model which describes the motion of stars in a Seyfert galaxy is investigated in detail. We conduct a thorough numerical analysis distinguishing between regular and chaotic orbits as well as between trapped and escaping orbits, considering only unbounded motion for several energy levels. In order to distinguish safely and with certainty between ordered and chaotic motion, we apply the Smaller ALingment Index (SALI) method. It is of particular interest to locate the escape basins through the openings around the collinear Lagrangian points…
We show that the presence of KAM islands in nonhyperbolic chaotic scattering has deep implications on the unpredictability of open Hamiltonian systems. When the energy of the system increases the particles escape faster. For this reason the boundary of the exit basins becomes thinner and less fractal. Hence, we could expect a monotonous decrease in the unpredictability as well as in the fractal dimension. However, within the nonhyperbolic regime, fluctuations in the basin entropy have been uncovered. The reason is that when increasing the energy, both the size and geometry of the KAM islands u…
A key goal of the Event Horizon Telescope is to observe the shadow cast by a black hole. Recent simulations have shown that binary black holes, the progenitors of gravitational waves, present shadows with fractal structure. Here we study the binary shadow structure using techniques from nonlinear dynamics, recognising shadows as exit basins of open Hamiltonian dynamical systems. We apply a recently developed numerical algorithm to demonstrate that parts of the Majumdar-Papapetrou binary black hole shadow exhibit the Wada property: any point of the boundary of one basin is also on the boundary …
On Nonlinear Dynamics Of A Nonideal Magnetic System With Shape Memory Alloy To Energy Harvesting Using Uncertainty Exponent And Entropy Of Basin Of Attractions Approaches
We numerically explore the Newton-Raphson basins of convergence, related to the libration points (which act as attractors), in the planar circular restricted five-body problem (CR5BP). The evolution of the position and the linear stability of the equilibrium points is determined, as a function of the value of the mass parameter. The attracting regions, on several types of two dimensional planes, are revealed by using the multivariate version of the classical Newton-Raphson iterative method. We perform a systematic investigation in an attempt to understand how the mass parameter affects the geo…
The circular Sitnikov problem, where the two primary bodies are prolate or oblate spheroids, is numerically investigated. In particular, the basins of convergence on the complex plane are revealed by using a large collection of numerical methods of several order. We consider four cases, regarding the value of the oblateness coefficient which determines the nature of the roots (attractors) of the system. For all cases we use the iterative schemes for performing a thorough and systematic classification of the nodes on the complex plane. The distribution of the iterations as well as the probabili…
We show that a known condition for having rough basin boundaries in bistable 2D maps holds for high-dimensional bistable systems that possess a unique nonattracting chaotic set embedded in their basin boundaries. The condition for roughness is that the cross-boundary Lyapunov exponent $λ_x$ {\bfac on the nonattracting set} is not the maximal one. Furthermore, we provide a formula for the generally noninteger co-dimension of the rough basin boundary, which can be viewed as a generalization of the Kantz-Grassberger formula. This co-dimension that can be at most unity can be thought of as a parti…
The Copenhagen problem where the primaries of equal masses are magnetic dipoles is used in order to determine the Newton-Raphson basins of attraction associated with the equilibrium points. The parametric variation of the position as well as of the stability of the Lagrange points are monitored when the value of the ratio $λ$ of the magnetic moments varies in predefined intervals. The regions on the configuration $(x,y)$ plane occupied by the basins of convergence are revealed using the multivariate version of the Newton-Raphson iterative scheme. The correlations between the basins of attracti…
Noisy scattering dynamics in the randomly driven Hénon-Heiles system is investigated in the range of initial energies where the motion is unbounded. In this paper we study, with the help of the exit basins and the escape time distributions, how an external perturbation, be it dissipation or periodic forcing with a random phase, can enhance or mitigate the unpredictability of a system that exhibit chaotic scattering. In fact, if basin boundaries have the Wada property, predictability becomes very complicated, since the basin boundaries start to intermingle, what means that there are points of d…
The escape mechanism of the four hill potential is explored. A thorough numerical investigation takes place in several types of two-dimensional planes and also in a three-dimensional subspace of the entire four-dimensional phase space in order to distinguish between bounded (ordered and chaotic) and escaping orbits. The determination of the location of the basins of escape toward the different escape channels and their correlations with the corresponding escape time of the orbits is undoubtedly an issue of paramount importance. It was found that in all examined cases all initial conditions cor…
We present a novel method for the calculation of the fractal dimension of boundaries in dynamical systems, which is in many cases many orders of magnitude more efficient than the uncertainty method. We call it the Output Function Evaluation (OFE) method. The OFE method is based on an efficient scheme for computing output functions, such as the escape time, on a one-dimensional portion of the phase space. We show analytically that the OFE method is much more efficient than the uncertainty method for boundaries with $D<0.5$, where $D$ is the dimension of the intersection of the boundary with a o…
A set of MapleV R.4/5 software routines for calculating the numerical evolution of dynamical systems and flexibly plotting the results is presented. The package consists of an initial condition generator (on which the user can impose quite general constraints), a numerical solving manager, plotting commands that allow the user to locate and focus in on regions of possible interest and, finally, a set of routines that calculate the fractal dimension of the boundaries of those regions. A special feature of the software routines presented here is an optional interface in C, permitting fast numeri…
We investigate the occurrence chaos in the escape of test particles moving in the field of a Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by an external halo. The motion of both material particles and zero rest mass particles is considered. The chaos is characterized by the fractal dimension of boundary between the basins of the different escapes, which is a topologically invariant characterization. We find chaos in the motion of both material particles and null geodesics.
The case of the planar circular restricted three-body problem where one of the two primaries is an oblate spheroid is investigated. We conduct a thorough numerical analysis on the phase space mixing by classifying initial conditions of orbits and distinguishing between three types of motion: (i) bounded, (ii) escape and (iii) collisional. The presented outcomes reveal the high complexity of this dynamical system. Furthermore, our numerical analysis shows a strong dependence of the properties of the considered escape basins with the total orbital energy, with a remarkable presence of fractal ba…
We present a fully automated method that identifies attractors and their basins of attraction without approximations of the dynamics. The method works by defining a finite state machine on top of the system flow. The input to the method is a dynamical system evolution rule and a grid that partitions the state space. No prior knowledge of the number, location, or nature of the attractors is required. The method works for arbitrarily-high-dimensional dynamical systems, both discrete and continuous. It also works for stroboscopic maps, Poincaré maps, and projections of high-dimensional dynamics t…
The topological structure of basin boundaries plays a fundamental role in the sensitivity to the initial conditions in chaotic dynamical systems. Herewith we present a study on the dynamics of dissipative systems close to the Hamiltonian limit, emphasising the increasing number of periodic attractors and on the structural changes in their basin boundaries as the dissipation approaches zero. We show numerically that a power law with nontrivial exponent describes the growth of the total number of periodic attractors as the damping is decreased. We also establish that for small scales the dynamic…
A Hamiltonian system with a modified Henon-Heiles potential is investigated. This describes the motion of free test particles in vacuum gravitational pp-wave spacetimes with both quadratic ("homogeneous") and cubic ("non-homogeneous") terms in the structural function. It is shown that, for energies above a certain value, the motion is chaotic in the sense that the boundaries separating the basins of possible escapes become fractal. Similarities and differences with the standard Henon-Heiles and the monkey saddle systems are discussed. The box-counting dimension of the basin boundaries is also …
A charged particle kicked from an initial circular orbit around a weakly magnetized Schwarzschild black hole undergoes transient chaotic motion before either getting captured by the black hole or escaping upstream or downstream with respect to the direction of the magnetic field. These final states form basins of attraction in the space of initial states. We provide a detailed numerical study of the basin structure of this initial state space. We find it to possess the peculiar Wada property: each of its basin boundaries is shared by all three basins. Using basin entropy as a measure, we show …
We consider the planar Hill's lunar problem with a homogeneous gravitational potential. The investigation of the system is twofold. First, the starting conditions of the trajectories are classified into three classes, that is bounded, escaping, and collisional. Second, we study the no-return property of the Lagrange point $L_2$ and we observe that the escaping trajectories are scattered exponentially. Moreover, it is seen that in the supercritical case, with $α\geq 2$, the basin boundaries are smooth. On the other hand, in the subcritical case, with $α< 2$ the boundaries between the different …
Chaos is an inherently dynamical phenomenon traditionally studied for trajectories that are either permanently erratic or transiently influenced by permanently erratic ones lying on a set of measure zero. The latter gives rise to the final state sensitivity observed in connection with fractal basin boundaries in conservative scattering systems and driven dissipative systems. Here we focus on the most prevalent case of undriven dissipative systems, whose transient dynamics fall outside the scope of previous studies since no time-dependent solutions can exist for asymptotically long times. We sh…
